Indonesian lemonade - Lychee. Found a long brown hair in it when i pulled up the straw.

We were walk-in and didn't mind waiting for a table. Weekday night at 7pm and it was very full, so we thought it'd be a good restaurant... Unfortunately, after trying a bit of each dish in the Nasi Rames, my friend found a short hair in her plate, and she couldn't keep eating. We weren't very impressed as many of the dishes were overly sweet and bland -- not deeply seasoned or spicy. Mi goreng had a mushy instant noodle texture, if you like that. I also ordered the lychee lemonade, but it tasted like lychee syrup in water. Then... I found a long brown hair in the drink. I don't know how they fumbled this badly. To have two hair incidents seems...

I can't believe this place doesn't have 5 stars. I was recommended this in San Francisco! There is a huge menu with delicious starters, entrees, desserts, and cocktails/mocktails! The starter platter was great to share for two and had interesting indonesian fusion dutch items. The food was so good I would have gotten the set menu if I hadn't been eating snacks all day. The restaurant has great lighting, many tables (that aren't too close together!!), and really friendly staff. I'd recommend this. I made reservations ahead of time but there were tables open. Don't miss this if you are in Amsterdam. Indonesian food is great in general in Amsterdam, but this is the place to go!

The restaurant is the highlight of our trip in Amsterdam. We felt the cooking is so flavorful and authentic. They serve Indonesian cuisine. We ordered a food samplers that feed 3-4 but 2 of us finished it all. Check out our before and after photos

There are certain things that you must see or do when you visit Amsterdam simply because they probably aren't legal in most parts of the world. As for some of the other things... well, let your culinary passport lead the way! You can't leave Amsterdam without indulging in a rijsttafel, a beautiful and flavorful display of Indonesian food designed to let you sample as many dishes as possible. (Think Indonesian tapas.) Come hungry and don't come alone--the "rice table" is meant to be shared! The chicken satay with peanut sauce (saté ajam) was the highlight of the entire rijsttafel, though admittedly, there weren't too many dishes for it to compete against, as most of the dishes in our lunch rijsttafel were sides. Kantjil & de Tijger isn't the most famous Indonesian restaurant in the city, but it's one of the few places that offers the rijsttafel for lunch (up until 4 p.m.!). Plus, it's right across the street from a coffee shop and a stone's throw away from the Red Light District, so I guess you can check three things off your Amsterdam bucket list in one go?

Kantjil & de Tijger is centrally located in Amsterdam, in what most people term the 'red light district'. Food: There was two of us, and we opted to create our own rijsttafel, vs ordering the offered curated option on the menu. The beef rendang is a must - a rich and dense curry, the beef was in tender, fall apart chunks. Only nit was the bowl it was served in was akin to a tiny rice bowl, and really not enough for two to share. We ordered a second beef rendang :-) Sweet and sour pork was curious as they were bbq pork ribs with ketchup/tomato sauce served on the side. Fried rice was literally fried, flavored rice. There are no options to add a protein. Lumpia as a starter was delicious. Service: Greeted at the door and seated quickly at about 7:30pm. Our section had one waitress staffing quite a few tables, so it wasn't as efficient as it could have been. Food comes out in decent time. Cost: About €55 for all that we had. Overall: Decent food, easy to get to, takes cards.

This Indonesian restaurant in city center provided quite a good dining experience. I had just completed a visit to one museum and had a couple of hours before going to the Anne Frank House. This seemed like a good place to have a late lunch in the meantime. The interior was well decorated and was much more spacious than one would think based on the size of the storefront. I walked in at about 3 PM. It was, therefore, not crowded. At the same time, the lunch menu was still available. On that menu was an option for a build - your - own lunch bowl (Kantjil Bowl). To do so involved a choice of a non - veg and a veg inclusion. There were five or six choices of each. I settled on Chicken in spicy tomato sauce and egg with cabbage. I was quite pleased with the result. The service was very good as my waiter was adequately attendant yet efficient. The prices were fairly reasonable. My final bill with my drink was €16.25. I was not unhappy with this value. If you like Indonesian food or are interested in trying it out, this establishment is a good option.

Kantjil & de Tijger was recommended to us by a local. The food is incredible, the service was exceptional, and the ambiance is upscale. The rijsttafels is perfect for 2-3 people, we got the matjan (meat) and everything was delicious.

Unfortunately I didn't like the food so much, it was very busy and we were excited to taste a different kind of food but it was actually not what we had hoped for. Wish we had tried the Spanish tapas next door!

Here is the 3-1-1: Food: There are many Indonesian restaurants in Amsterdam and this one was closest to the W hotel and recommended by the concierge as an "ok" place......and he was 100% right. Decided to go vegetarian so the order was for Gado Gado which had decent flavor in the peanut sauce as is more of Javanese style versus a Sumatra which is spicier and less thick; Sauer Lode (Vegetables in coconut milk) that was a little light on the coconut but not bad. The Sambal Terong (Eggplant in Chili) was not as thick as what I expected as the chili was more diluted instead of chunky but plenty of spice. The spicy Nasi Goreng (fried rice) was a little bland and could have used more seasoning but overall it was on par with being ok. Service: Once you got your order in, the food came out very quickly which probably means that most of food have been prepared before hand which is not a bad thing as with Indonesian food it is better to have the flavors develop throughout the day. Our waiter was friendly even though he was shorthanded and running around. Ambiance: Super busy as it was a Saturday night and it was hopping and very lively. Great vibe a fun place to have spicy food with Amsterdam local beers.

my friends and i ordered a lot of food to share here, and everything was alright. all of the four stars go to the tofu-tempeh satay with peanut sauce. that dish was so good that it was nearly addictive, and we ordered it a couple more times for the table. whether or not you get anything else at all, if you stop in amsterdam, you MUST try this peanut sauce!!!

I'm going to echo what all others have said, if you're in Amsterdam, Kantjil & de Tijger is a place that you have to try. Indonesian food is a must if you happen to be there. You don't necessarily have to get the meals that are charged out per person. I would really think about how hungry everyone is and if you really want to be in a food coma afterward. We ordered a la carte and there was more than enough food for four people. Here's what you really need to know: 1. The wait can be long, especially during peak hours. 2. When popular items on the menu are sold out, they are sold out. If you want it, go for it. 3. The drinks can be so creative. 4. Remember to add noodles and rice to your order. It helps round out all the other delicious things going on. The service is okay. You can definitely find better service in general but with a place as busy as this, they try as hard as they can

    The seafood rice table.
    Gen M.

Four of us had the rice table meal--the fish and the mixed fish/meat choices. There was way too much food: you get white rice and about six side dishes ranging from shrimp chips to veggies to hard boiled eggs in a curry sauce. Then you get the 4-5 other dishes included in the menu you ordered. Food was good (except for the mackerel which was hard to eat because of all of the bones). Service left much to be desired. Our server had too many tables to keep an eye on and he was not super attentive. For example, we asked for water and had to remind him and then received it 20 minutes after we initially asked for it. It's a big place, but was super crowded and in a busy part of town. We'd try a different place next time. Prices ranged from about 30-35 euros for the set rice table meal. Four could easily have split a meal for three there was so much food. We did not finish what we ordered.

Overall: 5 stars…read more When I searched where I could partake on the Indonesian Rice Table feast in Amsterdam, Sampurna came up with their intriguing Satay Solo course that has a small plates of everything. I love the concept because it offers so much insight into the cuisine without having to consume in such large volumes. That said, this "solo" rice table was still food that was more than 2 meals worth for me, but much better than 12 meals worth. Love the food and the flavors, and was impressed by how well everything was cooked and balanced each other. [ PART I ] Chicken Skewers - Classic chicken satay with peanut sauce that is tender and works well with that sweet and savory profile. Beef Skewers - Love these beef skewers that have a strong meatiness to the bite. Goat Skewers - Very intriguing, not too gamey meat with a relatively sweet profile that works. Nasi Goreng - Well flavored fried rice that stands on its own but tastes even better with the rice plate. Bami Goreng - Deliciously decadent noodles powered by the bacon. Daging Smoor - I love the flavor profile of this sweet braised beef; its tender, its strong in flavor, and goes so well on top of the bed of rice. [ PART II ] Jagung Kacang Panjang - light clean dish with delicious vegetables; great balance to the menu. Salat Manga - Flavorful and refreshing mango salad in a peanut dressing that has sweet and nutty profile; this dish is bold in flavor but also provides some relief to the other heavier flavors on the menu. Sambal Goreng Telor - The sambal gives such a bold flavor to moisten and flavor the boiled egg; this would taste even better if the egg were soft boiled. Acar Ketimun - Much needed component of the rice table that provides acidity and freshness to contrast all the bold flavors of the menu. Serundeng - Toasted coconut and peanut topping I sprinkled onto the noodles; adds a tropical twist to the dish. Emping - Nutcrackers that are even more crisp than the shrimp crackers. Gives a density and sharp textural component. Food: +1 Presentation: E Price: +1 Atmosphere: E Service: E Menu: +2 Insta/Yelp/Beli: @amei_eats Insta/TikTok: @ameizing.race

I don't have Indonesian food where I live, so was excited to try this in Amsterdam. I thought the dishes were all flavorful and gave a good mix of meat, vegetable, and rice dishes. The individual servings were small, but filling enough because of the heavy coconut milk used in most dishes. 1 star off: The attitude of the waitstaff was abysmal. First of all, their website does not offer reservations and they rarely answer their phones. So my family and I arrived at restaurant opening to get a table. The first thing they said to us was "Do you have a reservation? If you don't, I can only give you a table if you get out by 6:30PM." in a stern way. We said okay. The group that came after me also raised the issue that no one at the restaurant answers their phone for reservations. The waitstaff did not respond to that, but begrudging seated them. 1 star off: While we were ordering food, the waitstaff noticed that my son had a water bottle with him, and proceeded to give him a lecture that water bottles are not allowed and that we have to order water from them. The staff were friendly and courteous, and I would gladly come back next time I'm in Amsterdam. Walked in on a Saturday evening around 7pm as a solo diner and the restaurant was packed. I didn't make reservations so was hoping they could squeeze me in and it was a yes, just had to wait for about 8-10 minutes until the bar area seating cleared up a bit. Score! Seated the menu was presented right away, after about 10 minutes staff asked for my order, I got: - Spang Makandra Special €17.50: this is a plate of several of the house specialities. Fried rice & noodles, braised chicken, grilled chicken satay, stir-fried long beans, egg, potato sambal and perkedel (fried potatoes). So tasty all around! Loooved the braised chicken was done very well, the peanut sauce used for the chicken satay was a bit on the sweeter side. The egg was scrambled (believe this was intentional for this preparation), the flavors were delicious! I can't comment to the authenticity since I'm no expert in Surinamese food though would certainly recommend this dish to all. - Dawet €3.00: if you're familiar with SE Asian shaved ice with palm sugar syrup, the flavor of this drink is reminiscent. While the color is a bright pepto bismol pink, it's mostly coconut milk with a strong flavor of gula malaka. Was on the sweeter side though glad for the coconut milk to balance out the spiciness of the hot sauce. - Beef rendang sandwich €6.50: sooo yummy. Considering the Indonesian and Chinese influences in Surinamese food, I've eaten my share of specifically Malaysian and Indonesian food in those countries and the curry flavors in the sandwich were prominent and super tasty. The spices were quite strong that even wrapped in foil and inside a plastic bag, my entire bag smelled like rendang (in a most moth-watering way lol) after carrying for some hours. The decor was cozy and filled the left side wall with pics of patrons of the past, opposite wall full length mirrors to make the space look larger. Seating enough for about 50-60 probably. Even though they were slammed, staff checked in periodically on how I was doing, refilled water, which indirectly led to an interesting conversation with another solo diner sitting at the bar. Strong recommend!

Definitely make a reservation as the narrow restaurant has limited seating. They turned away several parties on an early Thursday evening around 7 PM. A rijsttafel is an elaborate Indonesian meal that was adapted by the Dutch who colonized Indonesia. It consists of many, many side dishes served in small portions that are accompanied by rice prepared in several different ways. Although the dishes served are undoubtedly Indonesian, the rijsttafel's origins were colonial. The Dutch introduced the rice table to impress visitors with the exotic abundance of their colony while showcasing foods from different regions. Rijsttafels strive to feature an array of flavors, colors, degrees of spiciness and textures. The dishes may be crispy, crunchy, chewy, soft, hard or velvety. Such a beautiful display. A feast for the eyes as well as the palate. Ordered both the large and small Tujuh Maret's rice table. The larger rijsttafel includes all the specialties of the chef, composed of 18 different dishes. The smaller rice table can be ordered as mild-medium or medium spicy including chicken and tofu satay, yellow rice, jasmine rice, sweet and sour salads and prawn or rice crackers. Chicken dishes included (from least to most spicy): Ajam Opor-Chicken in a mild sauce of coconut and kurkuma. Ajam Roedjak-Chicken in a spicy sauce of red peppers and coconut. Ajam Rica Rica-Chicken in a spicy sauce of assorted peppers. Beef dishes included (from least to most spicy): Daging Smoor-Beef in a mild soy sauce and nutmeg Daging Rendang-Beef in a spicy sauce of various peppers and coconut Daging Belado-Beef in a spicy sauce of red peppers and tomatoes. Satay dishes included: Sate Ajam- Chicken satay with peanut sauce. Sate Tahu- Tofu satay with peanut sauce. Side dishes included: Gado Gado-Mixed vegetables with peanut butter sauce. If you decide to forgo a resy and just walk in, you may have to wait, as there's very limited seating. We walked here and it was easy stroll, enjoying all the little shops & scenery along the way. When you walk in your greeted by a yummy smell of spices. It's definitely a family business. Tiny euro style restaurant. Food - we ordered the Rice table for 2. And bring your stomach space, because it's alot of food. We came hungry and still had leftovers. It's a progressive meal, from mild to spicy dishes. But I believe you can chose your level of spice with the server. 18 dishes come out all at once. Consisting of fish, chicken, beef, veg etc dishes plus rice. All with unique flavor and textures. Would highly suggest it if in the area. Even if it's not in your wheelhouse foodwise, still an interesting experience.
