We went on the lava expedition tour with our guide Carl. We had a great time and Carl is full of interesting information about the island. Definitely an amazing experience. The only reason I rated this a 4 instead of a 5 is because I was hoping to be able to see the lava flow into the ocean at night but the company stopped doing this. The lava lake was spectacular during our visit but note the views change daily so your experience will not always be the same as what my husband and I experienced. It was a wonderful day and I would highly recommend this to everyone visiting the Big Island. Carl himself has lived his life to its fullest and was a great guide. 5 stars for Carl ! This review is only in reference to their Evening Volcano Explorer tour, so please keep that in mind. I have no experience with any of their other tours and they may be worth the money, however this one was not. The one star is for our tour guide Rob, who was a nice guy and did a good job. It wasn't his fault the tour is poorly designed and not worth the money. First off, you are crammed into a 15 passenger van and driven to a macadamia nut farm. You eat dinner outdoors overlooking the property in a picnic pavilion. You can purchase overpriced nuts, shirts, etc. at the farm ... it kinda felt like we were driven to an outdoor tourist trap. The dinner was horrible. They invest no more than $1 per person on ingredients. Sliced potatoes, boiled corn and paper thin fatty chicken cutlets that were inedible. The one bright spot was sliced strawberry papaya and Doritos. To the tour company ... might I suggest simple deli sandwiches, cookies and chips? Those are difficult to screw up and would be a much better perceived value than the garbage you served. After "dinner", you are packed back into the van and driven to the black sand beach. This was very cool and certainly worth seeing, however you can do this on your own with your own rental car for free. Following the black sand beach, it's more cramped van time as you drive to the current lava flow. In a shocking turn of events, there are more vendors selling stuff at our parking spot. Who would have guessed? The tour company provides you with a high-powered flashlight which is needed for walking to the end of the road where you can hopefully see the glow of the lava. We were able to see the glow, but not flowing lava. The walk is on a smoothly paved road - no dangerous hiking. Anyone could do this on their own without a tour company. I understand nature is nature and lava flows when and where it chooses - the tour company has no control over this. However, the photos and package activity description is incredibly misleading on their website. YOU WILL NOT SEE FLOWING LAVA NOR WILL YOU BE ANYWHERE NEAR FLOWING LAVA. You have ZERO chance of getting a photo that resembles anything like that on their website. I am disappointed I spent $190 on something that I could have done on my own for the price of one flashlight and a gallon or two of gas in my rental car. I take some solice in the fact that I might be able to save some other yelper's some cash and encourage them to avoid this particular tour. Save your money. Go to the visitors center in Volcanos National Park and spend 15 minutes talking to one of the rangers. Ask him/her where to hike, where to see the current flow, what to watch out for, etc. Better yet, hire an off-duty ranger to hike with you to see the lava and pack your own dinner. read more

I booked two tours (zipline and volcano) with KapohoKine Adventures tour through them and Expedia at my resort. Of course, I did end up getting a discount since I attended a presentation at my resort, so I cannot comment on price (You know the deal at these resorts right? yea, I thought so....) Anyway, my zipline adventure tour was AWESOME. Okay, I was nervous and gonna piss my pants at any moment terrified the entire drive over *you need to drive yourself*. But rest assured, if I can do it, then you can to. The ziplines have two attachments, an automatic break *don't need to do it yourself! yay!* and the longest zip on the island. Eight line, all dual, so you'll never really need to zip alone. Our tour guides were awesome (forgot their names, but they were cool!). At the store, you have the option to purchase/rent a GoPro, do it! Seriously, and buy it if you don't already own it, it became useful. After a rocky ass drive up to the start of the course, they give you a rundown/how to, safety instructions,. etc. Then they get you into the gear, and after a climb on your first of many suspensions, you get on with your first zip. The first zip, is the appetizer. This will prepare you for the adrenaline to come. If you can do the first two, you're golden. I will say, the exit to zip 4 can only be described as evil fun. Zip 4 gives you a mini break, and a bathroom. Use it. Cause after that, you got nothing but God's green earth and it's from a large height. There are 4 more zips after this, and the last one is downright breathtaking. I mean. Yes! The evening volcano tour was an all day event. You get picked up on this tour, you go to a coffee farm where you will stop for lunch and get a coffee farm tour. This was enjoyable, and if you like coffee (especially Kona!) you'll really have a good time here. Lunch comes with an amazing view, naturally. After coffee, you're on to the next sight. You get to go Punalu'u Bake Shop which is the Southern most bakery in the Southern most town in the USA (if I need to explain that, it's called 3rd grade geography). The malasadas there are different from Leonard's on Oahu, but no less delicious. After a quick stop and purchase of wonderful baked goods, you get to see SEA TURTLES! A black sand beach (get the coconut from uncle in the parking lot) and enjoy the black sand between your toes while you gaze at the ocean and turtles. I might have gotten a little excited to see the turtles.... After that, you get a view of the crater, a volcano tunnel, dinner, and then, the main show, the one you came all the way out to Hawaii for, Kilauea in all her wondrous glory. The Jagger Museum is the final stop and viewpoint for one of the most active volcanoes in Hawaii and the world. Don't expect a huge and warm welcome though, but don't expect her to just sit there and not do anything either. You will see her glowing, but not necessarily flowing. And please, don't complain to the company about that either. This is Mother Nature and a freaking volcano Goddess we're talking about. No one can control that. After a good while there, take advantage of the restroom, cause after this, it's the long journey back to Kona. Our tourguide was John and he was great, keeping us entertained, and telling us stories and legends about Kilauea. Shout out to all our drivers for also keeping us safe! I definitely would book another tour when I find myself back on the Big Island. read more

My husband and I did the zipline through paradise out of Hilo. Even though we were staying on the Kona side of the island, we decided to take the drive to Hilo specifically for this tour, and we are so glad we did!!!!! We did the 8 zip line course which had spectacular views. I was a little nervous at the beginning, but this course started off with the easy zips first and ended with the "longest" zipline and best view, which was great for me to be able to slowly work up my courage. My favorite part was that they were all-dual-track zip lines, so the husband and I could ride together every time! So much fun!!! Actually I lied, the best part was the crew. They were so much fun to be around, extremely knowledgeable, very friendly, cracking jokes and making everyone feel so comfortable. Our safety was their main priority and it showed, which immediately put me at ease. These guys were the best and I would recommend this zip line course for the views, the crew and the safety. read more

Rich, our guide, was awesome! So funny & personable. We had a great group & he was the reason we all got along so well. It's a long day, but you see & do so much. Our group of 6 did the "Evening Volcano Explorer" trip with Marcus who was born for this job. He was very easy going, made everyone comfortable right off the bat and was full of all kinds of knowledge about Hawaiian culture, history, plants and animals. It was enjoyable to openly discuss things with someone so down to earth and hear his way of describing things because of the way he learned most of them - the hard way (he had quite a resume). It is about a 12 hour long tour depending on when and where they pick you up so yeah, it definitely matters who you are with that long. From reading about KapohoKine it seems that their standards and values attract quality people. Other reviewers have described in detail the trip, it is a great value. All the stops were unique in their own way. You can't really appreciate an active volcano until you experience it firsthand, simply a great day for us that ended with a bit of last minute stargazing because conditions were just right. read more

Carl is an awesome tour guide, he is full of knowledge and loves what he does! I wish we had him as our personal tour guide for our whole Hawaii trip, so this review is no reflection on him! I wish we had a way to have a redo with him on the active volcano tour. We did the volcano by night tour, but really wanted to do the active volcano tour, but were told we weren't guaranteed to go if we booked it because it barely fills up, so we figured the volcano by night would still be worth it and we knew we would go After I got home though I feel like I wasted a day in paradise stuck in a van with no control of what we wanted to do. It was nice seeing Kona Joes, but we spent more time here then doing any single volcano activity it seems like. I feel cheated out of my money because we barely hiked or did anything volcano related. We saw the lava tube, but that hike wasn't even a half mile long. The steam vents were also cool, but again this wasn't even a rocks throw from where we parked. We finished at the Jager Museum which was cool too. The reason why I'm frustrated with my experience was all this stuff is FREE, and the reason why we took a tour was to have a guide to hike with and show us a true adventure. Carl was restricted on what he could do with my wife and I, which I feel is a shame because he knows so much cool stuff about the island that he could only talk about, not show us. Again this is no reflection on Carl, but how this tour is marketed. I loved the knowledge he provided as he narrated, but I wanted an adventure more than a history lesson. I should have just driven there and did all the FREE tours myself and found my own adventure. They should label the volcano by night tour for those who are with children,elderly or lazy. For $180 per person this trip was a rip off and if you are looking for an adventure this tour is NOT for you. Carl if you read this I hope you find a way to make your own company and do it right instead of going by a cookie cutter tour that you have to do. Your love for nature really shows and I believe you should buy that farm down here and make your own adventure company. I think it would be a huge success! read more

Definitely suggest doing the combo package ! You get to go ATV driving through all kines of trails and go to a waterfall. Kacey took awesome care of us during the rides. After we were done with the ATVs they have a little barbecue set up for you ( food included ) after the barbecue you get ready to go down 8 ziplines. Great scenes and awesome staff. Lei, Lina , and destiny took great care of us throughout all the lines making sure we were safe and understood everything that was going to go down. Make sure you have the day free because it's a full day (9am-5pm). Awesome stuff, will be back for sure. read more

This was our first time ziplining and what a great experience. The crew Alex, Matt and Kolton were top notch guides. Each took the time to get to know our names and were friendly, professional, and knowledgeable. They explained the gear used in detail and made everyone feel safe so you could really just enjoy the rides. We had a delicious lunch at the halfway point with fresh hawaiian fruit, sandwiches and chips that we had pre-ordered. Also Alex played the guitar at the halfway point and was pretty good too. We were met at the end of the zip lines by our driver Moku who was very funny and engaging as well. The scenery was breathtaking. Mountains in the background and gorgeous waterfalls and rapids under the zip lines. Overall a very well run organization. Easy to recommend. read more

Booked with Kapohokine via the resort we were staying at while in Kona. For a first time visitor to the Big Island, this was the one big activity worth doing/taking. I mean to be able to explore the Kona coffee belt, to the southern most town and bakery in the United States, to the black sand beach, the volcanos lava flow and path of destruction from years past, everything in between, to being on top of an active volcano called Kilauea...c'mon now that is COOL!!! Our guide Marcus was excellent, provided tons of information, easy going, professional, safety minded, etc. and the list goes on. At the end of our tour, he even provided front door drop off at the condo we were staying at!!! The travel van was clean, only carried 13 plus our guide, so it was very comfortable to ride and take in all the scenery without being limited by a bunch of other tour passengers. Snacks, refreshments, lunch and dinner all provided in the cost. Dinner at the Volcano House in the park we thought was awesome....get the Mahi Mahi dish. Cocktails and dessert are on your own as it was not part of the dinner, but that was no big deal. The grand finale was at the Jagger Museum where you get a closer look at Kilauea and get to watch as the sun drops and the glow begins to show itself. A lot of other tourist there viewing as well, but all you have to do is inch your way in and hold your cameras high and you'll take some great pics. I can say like many others last night that we all stood on top of an active volcano!!!! Since this island is so BIG, there will be a return trip and when it comes around, I'm thinking Helicopter tour (doors off of course), and Zip line with who else...Kapohokine Adventures!!!!! He picked us up at our hotel at 6AM and dropped us off at 10PM. Our day was so fantastic because of Conar. Extremely knowledgable and personable. This was by far the best adventure tour we have ever done.m We did their combo tour which included everything you should see on the Big Island including Rainbow Falls, Hilo, Hilo Coffee, Volcanoes National Park, the lava tubes, a macadamia nut farm, black sand beaches, finally lava spilling into the ocean at night, and more! I HIGHLY recommend this tour, especially if you can get Scott as your driver/guide. Very knowledgeable and personable. I wish we had done the our on our first day of the vacation instead of the last because Scott had so many great tips on other things to do on the island that the tour books do not tell you about. They provided snacks/drinks all day, and very good lunch and dinners included. TIP: If you go to their website there is a 10% coupon off of the tour. If you have the stamina to handle this long tour (a full day, approx 13 hours) then do it! Its the best way to get in all that the Big Island of Hawai'i has to offer. The tour was efficient and well designed. We had enough time at each location without wasting anytime. Also very educational about the island and all of its plants and animals as well. One of the things my husband wanted to do for our honeymoon was ziplining. I will say that I have a slight fear of heights, however the idea of 8 ziplines through the rainforests near Hilo sounded quite enticing. We started off at the Kapohokine storefront in Downtown Hilo (we ended up doing the heli-zip combo with Paradise Helicopters from Kona Airport to Hilo, and pairing the helicopter ride with the Kapohokine zipline in Hilo). It was great being able to combine two adventures in one day! Our driver, Collin, took us from downtown Hilo to the Honolii Mountain Outpost. Collin was pretty funny and kept us entertained on the -- what could be quite bumpy at times -- ride to the Outpost. And our zipline guides/lifesavers, Sam, Kat and Sarah were awesome. They were quite professional, confident, sweet and humorous. I was absolutely nervous on the first few ziplines, even though my husband was on the line right next to me for all of the 8 ziplines. Sam was wonderful at putting me at ease, and they have back-up lines for all of their lines. They were wonderful, and part of the reason I had such a great experience. The views were wonderful, too, and SO peaceful and fun. The last zipline was 0.5 miles. This is definitely worth looking into. If we came back to the Big Island with friends and family who wanted an adventure and beautiful view, we'd come back to KapohoKine. We also opted to purchase the GoPro video camera for our zipline (about $50), and the video is hilarious and a great keepsake. Our ride back to downtown Hilo from the Outpost was great, too. We had Sloane, and he was hilarious and kept us entertained. This is a great group, and we appreciated all of their great work and safe, adventurous visit. Mahalo! read more
