Dr. Khoo is a great physician. Very caring and very knowledgeable. Cared about my out of pocket costs for my medications when she was determining which brand of medication to prescribe. She took care to explain why she was prescribing certain medications and gently prodded me to make more helpful healthy choices. She was confident but gentle in her guidance. Others commented here, saying that she failed to diagnose a rare medical condition. I don't find that to be disqualifying because, by definition, a rare medical condition is hard to discover. Dr. Khoo was cheerful, sensible and straightforward. Exactly what I wanted in a doctor. Would recommend her highly. read more

I suppose Dr Khoo is a nice enough doctor and person, but she scheduled a follow up appointment with me after our first meeting in September 2025, while she was still part of a private practice. **She told me at the time she was moving over to Sutter in the interim, but she still set up this appointment for April 2026.** Since she had set up this appointment I assumed her staff would work on the details to transfer me over. Instead, I called to confirm the appointment (scheduled for three weeks from today) and they have no record of me or the appointment. She moved over to Sutter and *completely dropped me and the appointment she proactively scheduled with me.* She didn't give me any notice about dropping me or anything I needed to do. I assumed we were all set for the upcoming appointment and now they are treating me as a new patient with the next available appointment four months from now. REALLY poorly handled by the doctor all around. read more

I was diagnosed with POTS by a top POTS specialist at UT Southwestern in Dallas, TX. After my visit with Dr. Khoo, I continued to seek treatment for the POTS symptoms that I'd been having for years (along with my joint pain). During our visit, Dr. Khoo got upset when I mentioned the possibility of me having POTS since my mom had heard about it and I seemed symptomatic. She raised her voice and asked me if I knew what "tachycardia" is, and that it has nothing to do with joint pain. She did an improper, nontraditional 2 minute long tilt table test and then told me that I should go tell my mom that I don't have POTS. Despite Dr. Khoo refusing to refer me to a cardiologist, I quickly got an appointment in office with the first I was referred to - as an "imminent" patient during COVID due to my preliminary test results. They were not POTS specialists, but ran several tests on me and recognized inappropriate sinus tachycardia on our first meeting - they also referred me to a POTS specialist and I've since been diagnosed. The most significant part of this is that POTS is not the worst of my symptoms - it's a problem I face that is stemming from a more serious root issue. I have a new Internist who is completing residency at UCSF, which already seems much better than my experience at Khoo's office. I'm still being tested by all of my specialists and have a long stay scheduled at the Mayo Clinic in July, but as a root cause of POTS I likely have Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome which is a connective tissue disorder that often goes along with POTS. I also have Mast Cell Activation Syndrome, which goes along with EDS and POTS as well. They also believe I have inflammatory arthritis and an autoimmune disease, and yet Dr. Khoo insisted that there was nothing wrong with me, I just need to take Cymbalta and "see a psychiatrist". Luckily I have good insurance, but Dr. Khoo's office charged me $100 for the 15 minute visit in which she insulted and disregarded me while I told her I had become desperate for answers and treatment, all the while aggressively pushing Cymbalta (which would have ironically aggravated my POTS symptoms). read more

I loved Dr. Khoo while my medical problems seemed simple & straightforward. But it's turned out that I have a relatively rare genetic disorder that causes numerous complications causing severe pain, disability and functional problems. Instead of advocating for me, she engaged in active medical gaslighting. A subsequent doctor allowed me to listen while he spoke with her on speakerphone. Though she had always sounded professional (though clearly irritated and dismissive when speaking to me), she was outrageously vitriolic, angry and eager to spread her gaslighting to other doctors who were trying to help me. While I was admittedly abusing my pain medications, she decided that it wasn't because she was failing to address my problems, or because I hadn't been properly diagnosed. Her dissemination of the false narrative that my problems were of my own making seriously damaged my relationships with numerous other doctors, further delaying any possibility of my getting an accurate diagnosis or treatment. I consequently nearly died several times, and have permanent consequences that could have been avoided. While I understand that patients with difficult conditions are frustrating, her behavior was extremely inappropriate and evident of her severe limitations as a doctor. read more

New patient of Dr. Kohl's office and the experience has been fantastic! My first visit was with the Nurse Practitioner, Janet Michelson, and she was very thorough and caring of my needs. I have not seen a doctor in about 2 years so I had a lot of catching up to do as well as wanting extensive blood work to get to the bottom of some of some health concerns I am having. She ended up spending almost 2 hours with me in the room and I walked out very satisfied and feeling well taken care of. After my initial visit, Dr. Khoo went out of her way to contact me regarding my test results as she wanted to make sure that I go see the appropriate doctor as a follow up. I appreciated her getting on the phone with me and walking me through what I needed to do. Then, I had to get some paper work signed for work insurance purposes and popped in to the office without an appointment, in hopes to get a signature. Despite them being extremely busy, they did their best to get me the signature and additional information I needed. Lastly, I attempted to make an appointment with a specialist, in which my insurance said I need my primary to do the referral first before I could go. As I was on the phone with the insurance company, I contacted the office and they put it in the system for me right away-- saving me a lot of time and hassle. I was able to call the specialist's office right back and make an appointment with nothing stopping it-- even they were surprised how fast it took! In all, it's been a great experience and when it comes to your health, it's important to deal with a staff and health care professionals that go out of their way to help you! Nurse Practitioner Janet - very patient and really listens to your problems. She contributed a lot to the four star yelp review. Doctor Karen Khoo - a Doctor who cares about insurance money more than your illness and who prescribe the medicines before finding the root cause. In Jan 2019, I experienced hot flash, insomnia, chest pain and shortness of breathe, with all wrong tests been ordered by Dr Khoo, I was informed it's all mental and I am healthy but could be stressful. Without finding the true cause or referring me out, Dr Khoo prescribed me sleeping pills and anti-depressants. A few months after, I finally got an appointment with the right doctor and was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism (under active thyroid glands) and extremely low level of estrogen and progesterone at age of 32, which is extremely important for women trying to get pregnant to fix. Now I have been sick for 10 months, the recovering process is very slow as the true cause was not identified on time. Of course, I will have to delay the baby plan for I don't know long. Besides that, My Ob identified low TSH through my bloodwork previously and suggested me to schedule an appointment with a doctor to fix before I get pregnant. I scheduled appointment with DR Khoo and told her I have high TSH, which is dangerous for someone who wants to be pregnant or pregnant women. Throughout the whole appointment, DR Khoo was telling me she really doesn't understand why all Ob wants TSH to be low and how her other patients have TSH and still lived fine. Terrible healthcare experience, i strongly do not recommend. Dr. Khoo has very bad bedside manner, is very grating, negative, judgmental and hard to talk to. However, it's near impossible to actually get to see Dr. Khoo, more often than not you'll end up seeing the nurse practitioner. I had a wonderful experience with Dr. Khoo, I brought my elderly mom in with asthma and after a very detailed interview, she pinpointed exactly what the problem was and prescribed a great treatment that helped my mom prevent asthma problems for many months afterwards. This review is specifically for Dr. Green. She is in the same facility as another doctor. This is a medical office and part of Brown and Toland. Really needed a good female PCP and given they are in a convenient location, was excited to find them. Talking to the front office coordinator was easy. She is very helpful and easy to talk to. She is also very knowledgeable and helpful. It stops there. The first appt with the doctor was strange. The office is sort of cold and she was same. Felt sort of like she didn't really want you there. She did order the tests to address my issues and and questions, but the conversation made me felt like I shouldn't take too much of her time. Although the office was not busy. Appt this year was even worse. She was even more abrupt and sort of rude. It was obvious she didn't look at my chart given she was telling me things that was not on my chart, reviewing test results that was not mine. Telling your patient her test was positive when it wasn't is really scary. Realizing she made a mistake, didn't apologize but sort of laughed it off. Asked her some question and told her some concerns, but she sort of waived it off with it's not that serious. Couldn't get out of there quick enough. read more

I become flustered when it is time to choose a new doctor. It is one of those changes I hate making... I was recommended by a co-worker to visit Dr. Karen Khoo... This has been one of the best recommendations I have received. I normally judge a place on its ambiance, but there is nothing pretty about a sterile doctors office. However I didn't notice after receiving the highest quality in care. The assistant to the doctor is just as good. She is precise and informative. I truly disliked bringing our senior family member here on semi-annual basis, I'm glad we have switched MD's to get the care and compassion that's needed, anything recommended by Dr. Khoo should be scrutinized and if possible obtain a second opinion. Possibly the worst doctor's experience ever. One star is generous. 1. Waited at least 45 mins before I was seen by Dr. Khoo 2. She spent all about 5 mins on my physical; all of my previous physicals with other doctors have been much more thorough! 3. Dismissed most of my health questions with "you're young, I'm not worried". I felt rushed the entire time and did not feel she was engaged. 4. Incorrectly billed the physical and refused to change it because my health questions were beyond the realm of what a physical entailed. Example: she asked about my general health and I said I sometime experienced stomach pains. Apparently this qualified as "beyond the normal questions of a physical". She literally said I required her to "think" and thus the visit was not routine! Go see Dr. Khoo if you want an unengaged doctor who prefers not to "think". Otherwise, save your $$, time, and energy for someone else. Not worth the hassle and more importantly, doesn't seem like a doctor who cares or listens to her patients read more

She also expects you to take responsibility for your health and be well informed. That's fits perfectly with my outlook. 5 Stars! Also her assistant gave me a couple of vaccinations (as I'm traveling South in a month) and I hate needles, I never even felt it ...the injections were as smooth as butter!! Really! On the otherhand, the Lapcorp technician (downstairs), who drew my blood, was brutish and as blunt as her instruments. I'll know to avoid her next time. read more

Five stars for the good doctor Khoo, Janet Michaelson, NP, and staff. My biggest compliment to the office: I feel taken care of. Dr. Khoo is extremely thorough, well-educated, and concise (although some may feel concise is a turn off, I appreciate the matter-of-fact). NP Janet is equally as thorough and intelligent, as well caring and compassionate. If during my visit with Janet we come to a question that may need additional opinion she does not hesitate to consult with Dr. Khoo, who makes herself available to add her advice. The open communication saves time for having to come back to consult on a particular topic with the Dr. and provides a sense of ease knowing they the two providers concur on the particular treatment or diagnosis. Serena is friendly, and has always been very helpful in getting appointments in a timely manner, and even accommodating last minute requests. All of the doctors and medical staff I've encountered are genuinely concerned about performing their job as compassionate health care providers, and they're good at it. That's surprisingly hard to find these days. They're not medication pushers, they're not closed-minded or quick to make presumptions regarding one's health. read more

I was a big fan of Dr. Khoo up until my very last appointment with her. I wanted to see her one last time before I moved away so I scheduled an appointment. It was easy as always. Well I showed up and was going to have just a checkup but something else came up that needed her attention. I told her what was wrong, but before I could tell her that I was moving away and wanted to make sure I was good on other things, she was already shooing me out after she diagnosed me. I know she's a straight forward, no non-sense, no lolly-gagging type of primary physician but the thought of her shooing me out before we could talk bothers me. I miss that conversational physician (like my pediatrician) who actually takes the time to know you on a more personal level and takes the time to carefully explain things. Don't get me wrong though, Dr. Khoo is very good if you like that kind of straight forwardness. I just realized I don't anymore. read more

Dr. Khoo is a direct and genuinely caring doctor. As a medical student, I know when a doctor is cutting corners to save time. In the last couple of years, I been through many doctors, whom have all been guilty of this. It was such a relief to finally find a doctor who is always thorough with her exams and physicals. Dr. Khoo asks only pertinent questions and reasons through her diagnoses with you, allowing you to participate. The staff are awesome too. Everyone is super friendly and efficient. I have made two last minute appointments in the last couple of months, where they squeezed me in within the next hour! I have never waited more than 5 minutes in their waiting room. read more

I first went to Dr. Khoo when she was located on Van Ness because she was nearby. Yes, she is all business which is the way I like it. Recently, I needed a checkup and went to her inner Richmond office, which is much nicer. The staff was friendly. Dr. Khoo wasn't available on that day, and I agreed to see nurse practitioner Janet Michaelson, first for an eye infection referral, then came back to her for a full physical. I must say that she is the polar opposite of Dr. Khoo, very empathetic and great follow-up. Takes time with you to explain your options and had gotten two follow-up phone calls from her. Am very impressed. == Update == Nurse Practioner Jane Michaelson probably saved my life--insisting that I come back to see Dr. Khoo despite my good physical exam results and colonoscopy--why? Cause she was concerned about my side muscle pain. Turns out it was much, much more serious than a muscle pull, one which regular physical could not of detected. Very serious stuff that only an MRI could have discovered. Dr. Khoo was very empathetic--actually, in my case I found her straight forward manner reassuring and she helped guide me thru the next steps. I love Dr Khoo. She's straight-forward and knowledgeable, but will still laugh if you crack a corny joke. She will not, however, put up with any BS excuses for why you are not taking better care of yourself. She is very thorough and I never feel the slightest bit rushed when I visit - even if I am whinging about something unrelated to the reason I made my appointment in the first place. And, bonus, her office staff is courteous and they can almost always accommodate you within 24 hours of calling for an appointment. read more

I came here for an annual physical and found Dr. Khoo to be very a sharp doctor. She was sweet (but not overly maternal), smart, and direct. She answered my questions thoroughly and wanted to get as much done in a short patient visit. The receptionist, Dawn, is also very sweet and thorough. I have been going to Dr. Khoo for about 10 years now. Mostly I have gone to her for my annual physical exams, but I have gone to her at least 2 times when I had an enduring cold and have always had a good experience. Like other reviewers said, she is pretty to-the-point and *seems* cold at first (she doesn't smile much), but she's actually very sweet and thoughtful. She does seem rushed sometimes but whenever I had questions, she has always slowed down and taken the time to answer them thoroughly and thoughtfully. She's even offered me thoughtful advice on buying my own health insurance (when I was contemplating leaving a job and taking some time off) and one time (don't remember why the conversation turned to this), but she even counseled me a bit on why I was feeling a bit down. (You never know - could've been a medical reason.) We talked about life goals and even wishes unfulfilled and how many times people forget how much they actually *are* accomplishing in life. I found the conversation very comforting - like one you would have with a trusted parent or mentor. I can see how others might find her bedside manner brusque, but I think that's really just the surface. I also have many personal friends who are doctors and judging from their experience, and how they have to deal with insurance and law suits, I can understand why she might be hurried or want a patient to come in before she refills a prescription. Based on what I've seen, I think she is just making sure she delivers the highest quality professional service. read more

Other reviews are accurate that's she's no BS and gets down to business.This is my husband's physician and I called this morning as I've had a bad cold for almost a week and was able to get in as a new patient same day. Nothing better than that when you feel terrible! She's very bright and answered all of my questions. She even wrote down a little cheat sheet for me so I know which over the counter prescription drugs are the best fit for my allergies and the occasional cold (in addition to an Rx of course). Additionally, she also gave me a few samples to try out in the future when I have bad allergy days. Her office is a little far out but it's worth the trip out to the Richmond. Dr. Khoo has been my PCP for several years now. What I like about her is her no nonsense approach, keeping me up to date on whats going on and answering all my questions. She has helped me out quite a bit and she is perfect for me. The only suggestion I have is one of her staff members always seems extra nervous or in a rush to get you off the telephone, there could be some polishing up there. Dr. Khoo is the most awesome doctor ever! My family has known her for 5+ years now and we all love her. She was originally my grandmother's doctor and we all thought she was the kindest doctor ever. Whenever my grandma had to be sent to the hospital, she would visit the hospital to check in with the doctors to make sure they have all the necessary information and then check up on my grandmother herself. I don't think anyone else would do that. So naturally when I stopped seeing a pediatrician, I switched over to her too. Dr. Khoo is very thorough. I agree that she is rushed (as is all primary care physicians because they get reimbursed so little now from insurance companies), but she does make sure that you get everything that you need. Dr. Khoo is great, originally I went to see her when no one else in the entire city would give me a same day appointment or even the same week. Her receptionist was very accommodating and told me to come in right away saving me a trip to the ER. Dr. Khoo is very nice, straight forward and pragmatic. I don't feel rushed (keeping in mind that the days of actually sitting down with any doctor for more than 5 minutes are gone) and seeing her is as pleasant as an experience as going to the doctor could be. read more

She's been great helping me figure a few health things out that other doctors had dismissed. I have been going to her for over 2 years and even stuck around after they moved to the Richmond district. I do not like the PA though. I have seen her twice and she recommends that I go to a specialist for everything. She even threatened to cancel my BC for something that I had already had checked out. Love, Love, LOVE Dr. Khoo! She's been my Dr. for the past six years and I love her. Unlike other doctor's offices where you might have to wait a month to be seen, I can get an appointment same day if necessary. She's extremely thorough and genuinely cares about her patients. She will tell you the truth (whether you want to hear it or not) and is no-nonsense. Not everyone can appreciate that but to me honesty goes a long way. Dr. Khoo is very popular so it may be hard for newcomers to get an appointment with her. However not to fear because she has a Nurse Practitioner (Janet) who is also awesome. The front desk staff is also very nice. Dr. Khoo used to be at 2000 Van Ness but last July she moved out to the Inner Richmond. The new facility is a lot larger and more open, but it may be out of the way for some. You will not go wrong with this doctor's office! read more

Dr. Khoo is a primary care physician who is board certified in internal medicine. If you have a PPO or HMO, more likely than not her services will be covered under your insurance. She is extremely efficient and concise in her advice. She does not pull punches so, if you want to know the truth, she tells it to you without holding back. I think this type of relationship is important with a primary care physician but what do I know. Also, it is important to note that she has been practicing for 23 years and provides services at UCSF medical. read more

Dr. Khoo is fantastic! I found her through my insurance company and based on her good Yelp reviews, decided to give her a shot. I've been going to her for almost a year and I'm still impressed by her service. The reviews are true: she's blunt and honest, so if you want a "feel good doctor" stay with your pediatrician. That doesn't mean Dr. Khoo is rough by any means; she's knowledgeable and considerate, and will give you answers that you can trust. They are good with early morning appointments, too! read more

I've been going to Dr. Khoo and her staff for the past few years. Overall, they're efficient and friendly, and I like how I can easily get appointments often within 1 week with either Dr. Khoo or the nurse practitioner. I wouldn't necessarily think of visiting physicians and nurses as "fun," but they've make it a good experience for me -- and I feel like they sincerely care about their patients (even if the American healthcare system can sometimes be a pain to deal with from all perspectives... but that's another story). I am new to SF and was looking to find a general practitioner in the area. I was very disappointed with my first experience here. I waited for over 30 minutes to be seen by the nurse practitioner. The nurse practitioner was great and thorough; however, the front desk manager repeatedly called my prescription out loud in the lobby making the overall experience rather unpleasant. I hope my future experiences here are better. read more
