He makes it fun while still making sure you keep moving forward. He teaches Hapkido, a Korean martial art, and has achieved the rank of 5th Dan. To put that in perspective, it often takes longer to move from 4th Dan to 5th Dan than it does for a beginning student to attain a black belt. True commitment and experience! I've personally witnessed him build a new student's confidence inside of a month. Several times actually. A student comes in shy, scared, hardly speaking, and within a month the student is smiling, responding, engaging, and most importantly confidently trying. It's awesome. One of the great things is that while Hapkido can certainly be powerful, it doesn't rely on strength. Rather it teaches how to use angles and circular movements to your advantage. This might be a silly example but think of how a large adult can still trip over a small child or a pet - it's not that the child or pet overpowered the adult, it's that they interfered with the adult's movement in just the right way. It took no particular effort for them to trip the adult and yet it still worked. It's a great place to learn a martial art and how to protect yourself and those you love.

I love that we can easily schedule different days of the week and make up classes to ensure she isn't missing any instruction. The class is easy to jump into if you're new, or at a higher experience level. The owners are delightful and fantastic with kids meeting each at their own level. Went to Mick Doyle's for a free first class based off the recommendation of a current member…read more On the advice of an employee, the hubs and I took both the beginner and intermediate boxing classes. The beginner class was more of a warmup that focused on footwork and technique and the intermediate class moved into hitting and bag work. While the trainers and workout was fantastic, about 45 minutes of the two hours was taken up by the trainer talking (no movement during this time) and one-on-one work with the first trainer. The one-on-one time was great, however, if you were not working with the trainer you were just standing around. It seems this time would be more beneficial if people were paired up to continue training while waiting for their turn with the trainer. If you are looking for a workout, you may want to just attend the beginner class. If you are looking to become more efficient and trained in boxing, both classes are probably needed. The intermediate class (at least during our visit) is just a continuation of the first class and cannot stand on its own. While the extended time was a let down, as newbies we definitely needed the break. If we were to continue on, this would probably be an issue if all classes have this amount of down time. They all do a good job of demonstrating the skills and seem genuinely happy to help the kids. Class rates are reasonable and the studio is always clean. You'd think the mats would smell but they really don't. One thing they could improve on is the onboarding process. Our family was totally new to taekwondo and were unsure of what to expect for class, belt tests, etc. It would've great if they had info for new joiners and their parents, online maybe, that walked through the basic skills for each level, things to practice at home, what skills are required at a belt test, etc. I feel like we are just figuring things out as we go along.
