Took 6 weeks for a couple to come and do these. Some sculptures were 3 ton of sand , some were 5 and one was 15ton! It was special and brought in from New Hampshire. Cuffy's on RT 28 had three inside their place of business so you could really see them up close. Each business designed and paid for them. Dunkin doughnuts ofcourse was a cup of coffee with his hand around a doughnut! After the sculpture is finished they take elmers glue and water and spray the entire surface to keep the sculptures intact.

He directed us downstairs, where we watched a movie that informed us on the topic of whaling and how it was important to the town of New Bedford. I didnt know much about either before, so we found the film informative. It even kept our 7 year old occupied! They had a few exhibits to look at and an activity for kids to do. Overall, it was a good experience. I know there is more whaling-related stuff in town that we didnt get to, but Im not sure if its part of the NHP or not. If you're in the area and looking for something to do, I'd check it out.

I don't know if he pre planned his headstone's inscription, or his siblings--including comedic actor Jim Belushi--decided to put it on his marker themselves. All I can say is kudos to whoever came up with it. The inscription says: Here Lies Buried The Body of JOHN BELUSHI I may be gone, but Rock and Roll lives on" The skull and crossbones at the top of the marker, along with the inscription matches John Belushi's persona to a "T." The cemetery and the burial site, on the other hand, does not. Who would think that the legendary partier John Belushi would be buried in a rural cemetery in the sleepy little township of Chilmark on Martha's Vineyard. You'd think he'd be buried in New York, Las Vegas, or Hollywood. The grave itself is very nice and spacious. It's shows signs of aging, but is still kept up fairly nicely. Along the grave's base bottles of beer and spirits are strewn about. Not as bad as Jim Morrison's tomb, but it shows that fans do pay their respects and enjoy a drink with John Belushi, in spirit anyway. If you're a fan of SNL or John Belushi, you'd probably want to take a trip out Abel Hill Cemetery and visit this little marker. Not much to see, but it is worth checking out, even if it's just to to read the headstone.

I've been to Martha's Vineyard/Oak Bluffs 2-3 times and its a great little spot. Walked a hundred miles to get here…read more Ok, not really. But GREAT POINT LIGHTHOUSE is at the very tip of the peninsula and is in the midst of Nantucket Wildlife Refuge. To get there, first, you have to make sure you have a 4-wheel drive vehicle. Then you have to deflate your tires at a checkpoint before you enter the Nantucket Wildlife Refuge. At the same checkpoint, you have to pay $50 to the Massachusetts Trustees to get on the road leading to GREAT POINT LIGHTHOUSE. I'm not quite sure how they decide who to pull over or not. There were some people that had the same tags as our vehicles that got past the checkpoint without stopping and we saw them at the beach later on... Anyway... You drive on an unpaved road for a few miles. Then you drive on the beach for a couple of miles or so. Then you have to park on the beach and walk about a mile or so to reach GREAT POINT LIGHTHOUSE.

So there is no restaurant or professional entertainment. But you can chat with a seal up close or…read morejust watch the heard as they watch you and bark. An awesome very remote place. Saw no other people or cars or anything all day. Saw about 200 seals and double that many birds. The lighthouse is beautiful and the area is just a great natural haven. A gift from…read moreAndrew By any standards Andrew Carnegie was a very generous man and gave vast sums of money to many different charities and organizations. However when it came to libraries he really opened up his heart and wallet and was responsible for hundreds of libraries being built throughout the world, 85 in New England alone. In 1904 Carnegie and a local resident named Caroline Warren donated money to the town with the stipulation that a library be built. Carnegie didn't want publicity for this altruistic act and although this building is official known as the Carnegie building nowhere do you see his name or picture. Most people simply call this the Edgartown Library and that is the way he wanted it. The library is well used and has a huge number of special events and classes and it is definitely is a lot more than just a place to store books. Even though the building isn't large by many library standards, it manages to cram in roughly 40,000 items and still has cozy little spots to read and relax. The old building has been expanded three times over the years but has reached a point that makes further growth impractical. Fortunately plans and money for a new library are being developed and possible by 2015 a much larger and modern facility will be available. What will happen to the old Carnegie building once the new library is finished is still unknown but I'd like to think that it will continue to serve the Edgartown in some capacity that would make Andrew proud.

Ladies and libraries…read more The South Library Association started back in 1869 and like many libraries systems it was known as the Ladies Library Association. As if men weren't suppose to have anything to do with libraries or books. Like most libraries back then it bounced around for a while and the books were kept in a shed. Finally in 1935 the town acquired a wonderful old house to serve as the permanent library. The library has a definitely small town charm to it and parts seem more like a friend's home than a public building. Lots of interesting old things to look at as well as free wifi, lectures, concerts and genealogy materials. A very pleasant children's room is located down stairs and the staff were very accommodating and friendly. A nice library in an interesting building, located in a pleasant Cape Cod town.
