My husband and I got engaged in San Francisco 5 years ago, and had the opportunity to be visiting again this summer. I really wanted to get some pictures of us where we got engaged, by the Golden Gate Bridge. I started doing some research and found Katrina on Groupon. As soon as I reached out to her she was incredibly helpful and accommodating. She's actually in Oakland, but came to San Fran to shoot us for an extra $15. We were able to chose 2 locations for our shoot and so we went to the Golden Gate Bridge welcome center and to the Palace of Fine Arts. Katrina was incredible! I found Katrina Davis' nature photography class through a special deal on SFGate, which I believe is the same as the one offered on Living Social. Katrina basically offers this 3 hour course every Saturday and Sunday morning in various locales throughout the East Bay. Wanting to take full advantage of my new Sony Nex-5, I decided to plunk down 29 big ones, and chose March 5 at Robert Sibley Volcanic Regional Preserve (http://www.yelp.com/biz/robert-sibley-volcanic-regional-preserve-oakland) as the location, since I had never been there. From the get go, I could tell that Katrina is very energetic, and passionate about what she does. If you like your instructors to be young, hip, and in tune with current trends, yet still experienced and knowledgeable, Katrina is for you. The class was about 10 - 12 individuals of various ages and backgrounds with many different types of cameras - everything from basic point and shoots, professional DSLRs, to hybrids like mine. Although technically a beginners class, there was a quite a range of expertise levels. Some were just a step up from knowing how to press the power button, while others were a tad more advanced. Even so, Katrina was easily able to give everyone the one on one attention they needed, and also made sure that they all knew how to use their equipment properly. At the beginning of the course, she went around inspecting everyone's camera to ensure not only that each person understood how to use it, but also that she herself understood, as to make it easier to help with proper settings later on. Now, I wouldn't call myself an absolute noob when it comes to cameras, but until now, I had barely done anything more than the most basic of photography, never bothering to mess around too much with the ISO, shutter speed, F-stop, etc. No more. After this short class, I now feel more confident to switch off that intelligent automatic mode, and straight to the once seemingly unfathomable... manual. *gasp!* Katrina brought us to various spots around the park with interesting landmarks and photo opportunities, and at each site, she would teach us a new technique. Such methods include creating depth of field in trees and grass, bringing out the color in the sky, capturing light in dark areas, and maximizing size and volume of small areas. Every so often, she'd review our pictures to see if we were grasping the concept, and would give pointers on what improvements could be made. Above all, Katrina made the class fun with her exuberance and sense of humor, and even though we were all nerds with cameras taking pictures of trees and insects, everyone seemed to have a blast. I'd definitely recommend her course for anyone showing the slightest interest in photography. I'm not saying you'll instantly turn into Ansel Adams or Herb Ritz, but you'll definitely come out with a much greater understanding and confidence in your picture taking prowess. Furthermore, not only does Katrina teach a class, but she also has her own photography business doing weddings, events, modeling portfolios, etc. If any of you out there are looking for a photographer, I definitely wouldn't hesitate to refer you her way. My review is for Katrina's services for a private event that we had in April. Since this was my first time using a photographer instead of my handy little Lumix, I knew that we had to find the right person for the job. The right photographer would have to be talented of course, with an eye for capturing moments you wanted to remember forever, and a great personality. I'm happy to say that we found all of these things in Katrina. The photos on her website is what drew me in. There was something I saw in each photo that portrayed a moment in each person's face. We met a few months before the event to take care of the business details and immediately got the impression that Katrina was passionate about photography in general. I also was impressed that in addition to doing events, she taught classes on the weekends. She even mentioned that she might be doing walking tours of parts of Oakland as well. Throughout the upcoming months we communicated via email and she was always very quick to respond to any questions that I had. The day of the event she blended in with our friends and family and proceeded to shoot and capture the many beautiful and hilarious moments of the night. We...loved....Katrina! She was so awesome to work with. My husband and I were looking for a photographer for our engagement photos and small civil ceremony. We got some initial recommendations from friends and browsing the internet, but everyone we looked into was SO expensive. We were concerned about the budget, because we will be doing a second (larger) ceremony in a year, so that would double the money spent on photographers. We found Katrina on Yelp and really liked her work on her website...the same great work as we would be getting paying double with someone else. We had a very short timeline, so we actually didn't get to meet her until the day of our wedding (we did it all a little backward, taking the engagement photos after the civil ceremony so we could use them on the invitations for the larger ceremony next year). However, it felt like we had known her for awhile, because she was so easy to work with. She was exactly the personality we had hoped for - relaxed and funny but also honest enough to tell us if a pose just didn't look good or if we needed to move differently into the light. A week or so after the event, she sent us a small selection of photos so that we didn't have to wait for all of them. They were *awesome*. I was so impressed how she worked with the setting to turn the photos into something magical...something beyond what I could have imagined with the setting. A couple weeks after that, she sent us a link to access all the photos online as well as a USB (I had no idea what elegant USB's were on the market...but 10/10 for presentation). My husband and I used Katrina Davis photography services for our wedding in March of 2016. Katrina was an incredibly professional and astute photographer and an absolute pleasure to work with. I met with her once before outlining our general vision for the day and all other communication was done via email. On the big day, I had previously sent her a shot list and brought a copy myself, but she had it all down as well. We knew that we were in good hands! She was able to blend in with our ceremony and at no point did her services seem like they were "getting in the way of anything," however, that's not to say that she wasn't able to hold her own with a rowdy bunch of family members that needed a little direction when posing for photographs. She was able to be kind but also offer directions about who needed to get in the photo next and directing everyone so that we could get over the formal parts and get on to the fun. However, the true testimant of a photographer are the photos that you get after the day-of, and we were so phenomenally pleased with ours. Katrina offered an online gallery as well as a USB flash drive of all the photos. The photos are fantastic and are in the style that you can see on her website. Katrina shot our Russian River wedding in September. She was so much fun to work with. Katrina, and her second shooter, showed up on time and got straight to work. I didn't even notice her during the ceremony, but she somehow managed to get some incredibly close-up shots. She was friendly, professional, and had a great sense of humor. Our wedding was running a bit behind schedule, as weddings do, and she agreed to stay a bit longer in order to shoot the first dance and Havah Nagila. We got our pictures back about two months post wedding, and they are gorgeous. She uses natural light to create a soft, ethereal look. We have some great staged shots, as well as beautiful candids. This is regarding the photography class today at Temescal Regional Recreation Area bought through LivingSocial. The class I felt was disorganized and not well planned out for the $35. I would have been even more upset if I had paid the full $75. Today's class consisted of the following: 1. Meet up 2. Name tags 3. Katrina walking around making sure everyone knew how to use their DSLR 4. Reading almost word for word of her handout on tips for photography. 5. The rest of the 2 out of 3 hour session was just us shooting pictures. We were encouraged to go all over the park to take interesting photos. She was traceable in the beginning for brief feedback but that was it. Tips from a teacher for a better class: 1. Save the paper for the handout. E-mail that out ahead of time for people to read. 2. During the actual class, briefly use a white board to talk about how adjusting apecture and exposure affect the effects of the photo. Visually show what mechanism is changed in the camera. 3. Walk with the class and take photos of specific items. Work on effects that you talk about such as focusing on a subject or picking interesting items for photo. 4. Set up meeting time to meet back for feedback. Then let everyone take pictures. I found many others finished taking pictures well before the scheduled end time and Katrina nowhere to be found. I can't emphasize how incredible Katrina is! I rarely like photos of myself and this feels like the first time I've seen pictures of me and have been happy. I keep showing them to friends and they both love the photos and then assure me "yes, this IS what you look like" - my mom even likes them, and she's a tough critic. I really needed some beautiful professional headshots, and Katrina truly blew me away. I attended Katrina's class this past weekend in the Temescal area and it was greeeaat! It was well worth my $30. She started off with an introduction where we received name tags (which I believe is good in ANY type of meeting) and she gave us a handout which had many definitions and explanations on photography. The handouts were very helpful in explaining many aspects of photography and how to use DSLRs. Katrina then went through and looked at everyone's camera, individually, and made sure we understood our cameras or if we had any questions about them. And then we got to go take pictures!!! I believe I did the smart thing by staying close to Katrina through our class and I was able to take shots with her and ask her any question I may have had. I was almost like her shadow and I hope she wasn't annoyed by me. Lol. Just like Anna L. below, I did too stay for the entire class and we did meet up in the end. Katrina answered questions and gave us feedback about what we could've done better, what we did correctly, and I even got compliments on some of my photos :-). In regards to Kenny L's review below... everyone is entitled to their own opinion. However, Katrina was always there to help and offered help to everyone, even those who didn't need/want help. About your comment about bringing a white board to illustrate things... I don't think it would be pleasant for anyone to carry around a white board on warm days for long periods at a time; besides, hands-on help is much more beneficial than drawing it on a white board and Katrina definitely gave us hands-on assistance. If you would've stayed until the end of class, you would've seen that Katrina gave us feedback and critiqued our work and she probably would've been able to help you out or answer any inquiries you may have had. You definitely missed out on the most critical part of the class. Overall, the class was awesome and it was a great learning experience. But more importantly, Katrina Davis was a great person and teacher; she was very helpful, friendly, and approachable. What else could one ask for in a teacher?! I went out for her nature photography class yesterday at Huckleberry Botanical Regional Preserve and it was great! She was there early awaiting our arrival and was extremely friendly and helpful throughout the entire session. We spent some time learning about the basics of photography, learned about how to shoot in manual on our cameras, then spent a couple hours in guided and unguided shooting. She was professional and kept to an agenda while being really friendly and helpful the entire class. Katrina found interesting things to photograph every couple feet down our trail which was really inspiring in terms of finding subject matter for our photography. We reviewed our photos throughout the entire class and left feeling like we'd gotten much more comfortable with our cameras, had a toolbox of ideas for how to shoot nature, and left with increased ability for finding things to photograph. I came into the class having had some experience with shooting in a mostly manual way and feeling a solid grasp of composition and focus techniques, but I've mostly photographed people and portraits. Katrina's class made me much more comfortable shooting nature and I re-learned many of the things I'd forgotten due to the automated tendencies of cameras today. I'd definitely recommend her class to anyone who is a beginner, a novice with a desire to get more comfortable shooting nature, or anyone looking to become more comfortable embracing the manual controls on your camera. read more

I signed up for Katrina's class after I got a deal online, and I am so glad that I did her Oakland Walking Tour class! It was the PERFECT class to learn how to use the manual functions on my SLR camera. Katrina takes time to show you how to use the key features, and she even comes around to check one-on-one that each and every person in the class is able to do everything. There was just a short explanation of aperture, shutter speed, etc at the beginning, and then the rest of the class was all hands-on. Not only did I discover parts of my home city that I didn't know about (this really was a great *tour* of Downtown Oakland), but I also got a lot of great shots that I am proud of. Katrina's instruction was both functional (how to use the camera) and artistic (we all practiced taking different types of shots, and she gave us feedback on things like the composition of our photos and how to improve them). Not only did she engage me to make me laugh and smile, and pose me so that I got lovely but natural angles.. in the background she's also quickly and quietly calculating all the right camera moves so that we got incredible light, clarity and warmth in our photos. I haven't seen the final pictures of our wedding yet but we did professional/engagement photoshoot with Katrina before and she is great. It's not just actual picture-taking but her ability to spot the best locations, angles, areas, some brick walls and cobblestones that will make that perfect shot. There is one picture of us standing outside of our reception standing on the cobblestone and it looks like a cover of the magazine. This shot wouldn't have happened if Katrina didn't lead us there. She is also great at directing people. We had a group photo of 55 people in busy public location and she orchestrated everyone where to go and where to look to make it happen. We could not recommend Katrina highly enough. We were on a tight budget and doing a very DIY wedding. When we looked over her web site we couldn't believe a photographer responsible for such beautiful, professional, high quality photos actually fit our budget. We talked with Katrina a few times via phone, e-mail and Google Hangout leading up to the wedding. She was very friendly and laid back and the perfect fit for us. We didn't have a lot of traditional poses or a long photo list. In fact we could've managed to be more organized, but Katrina just rolled with it, even agreeing to stay a little longer than we originally planned. Katrina Davis Photography responded promptly to all emails and questions. On the day of, Katrina was punctual, professional and very capable of controlling our unruly wedding crowd. She was an absolute blast to have taking your photo. She corralled people well and quickly got through all our posed, family shots; she had sent a list of shots ahead of time to make sure we were not missing any and was totally at ease adding additional standing portraits. Our ceremony and reception were outside in a park, and she told us she wanted to wait until the light was right before doing our couple shots, which turned out amazing! I found Katrina's photography class though a living social deal for $40 and decided to sign up since the reviews on yelp are generally positive. The class I took (Oakland Walking Tour) was awesome, and definitely worth every penny I paid for! First off, Katrina is such a great and approachable person, and she makes the class fun. She starts off the class by sitting with each student to make sure you know where all the functions are, and then she takes you to different spots around Oakland to take pictures. In each spot, she will first show you how she might take a particular picture (what settings she would use, composition, etc.), and then give you the chance to take your own pictures while she walks around to give you critique. At each spot, Katrina would also give you a brief history, which was really intereting for me. In the 4 hours, I learned some really great techniques and history about Oakland, and I can't wait to apply these techniques in the future! I don't often feel inclined to write yelp reviews, but I would definitely recommend this class to anyone out there! read more

Katrina photographed my wedding on January 18, 2014 in Pacifica, California. I had met Katrina when she photographed a friend's wedding 2 years ago, with really great results and such an easy way about her. So, when it was my turn, I shot her an e-mail, then spoke on the phone and she very graciously said she could shoot our wedding, too. The day was totally perfect, and Katrina was a big part of that. She was there on time, before me even, who was running around like a crazy person. For the crowd shots, she was great and unobtrusive and caught natural photos, which is exactly what I was looking for. The venue was pretty close quarters, so it was quite a feat to be so in the background during those times. The family and couple portraits were a great experience. She made us laugh so much and was really, really fun to work with to get those great goofy AND romantic pictures out of us. I got the pictures via a link and then in the mail about 5 weeks after the wedding and they look just amazing. She did such a great job with everything, but especially the mingling shots. She really does have a way of capturing the emotion really well. And I don't know how she did it, but there were no pictures of me blinking. Quite a feat. Lastly, one thing I really like is getting all the pictures on a disc and with the rights. That was a big sticking point for us, but something I believe she regularly does. We could have had the option of her printing out photos for us, but we chose just the disc, and we'll print out on our own. All in all, super duper awesomesauce and would totally recommend her to anybody looking for a photographer. AND keep her in mind for any upcoming events we may have. She's that good. read more

On the day of the wedding, Katrina was a great combination of friendly and professional. Unreal. She turned my plane white wall and natural lighting and made my head shots look like I was posing in a studio. I normally don't like the faces I make in photos but Katrina made me feel so relaxed that I did not feel weird going from laughing to fierce to subtle smiling. She directs well.
