Peaceful....if just being on the garden Isle is not enough to relax, put you at easy and in contemplative mode, have I got a place for you. My 4 th visit here and it gets better every time. Very welcoming place up in the hills of Kauai. You are a world away from what's happening down below and it's refreshing. If at the bottom of your heart you realize,we are all connected I recommend you visit.

The place is so beautiful it will make you want to be Hindu. The tour conductor is good but you must go on a day that they let outsiders into the stone temple area, which after decades of hand carving, is now complete.

Beautiful grounds, wonderful chanting in temple and a welcoming introduction during the service. A lovely visit overall, with an odd twist at the end. It was a slow day with not many visitors, and as I was enjoying perusing the gift shop and paying for several purchases I had made to help support the temple, an older woman dressed in white who had just exited the shop and was about to close the door stuck her head back in. I was in the midst of an interesting conversation with the cashier when the woman interrupted. I had borrowed one of the lending sarongs at the entrance--a lovely pink and white one--and the woman in white let me know I hadn't needed to borrow one since I had long pants on. I told her I felt more respectful and cheery in it, but she was clearly annoyed. She snapped back that sometimes they ran out and I shouldn't have borrowed it. She went on strangely to suggest I should buy one if I liked them that much! The tone of the cashier I had been speaking with changed after the woman in white addressed me, pointing to where the sarongs for sale where. Very odd! There had been at least 25 neatly rolled sarongs at the entrance for borrowing when I arrived, and about the same number when I returned mine. It was a strange ending to an otherwise lovely first visit to this beautiful temple. When I was in my 30s I landed a marketing job for a large museum, and my first day overheard two curators (museum scientists) in an elevator talking about how great life would be at the museum if they could just do their research and not be bothered by all the pesky museum guests who disrupted their work. I saw then that these two had lost their way regarding the true mission of a museum scientist: Their success is inextricably linked to their ability to share their journey of discovery with others!m. This devotee reminded me of those two--territorial and resentful rather than welcoming. This was probably not her best moment when it came to representing her Hindu practice (and the ethos of this temple community, for that matter). At 65 I know both that 90 percent of how people behave has little to do with others, and everything to do with themselves. I also know that to err is human. I share this feedback because it would be a shame if other visitors--especially the young and searching--were made (even inadvertently) to feel, ultimately, as unwelcome as I was. Luckily, we all have the opportunity to be a better version of ourselves tomorrow.

A few years ago, I managed to attend a meditation session presided by the monastery's guru & abbot Satguru Bodhinata Veylanswami. It was a solemn ritual that was both spiritual & inspirational. He led the meditations in a rhythmic & transformative fashion. It was mesmerizing to feel & hear. The way the temple was architecturally designed, it reverberated & I felt it touch my soul to my very core. You have to experience it for yourself to understand what it is all about. The grounds are well maintained by the monks & people from the community (volunteers). It is a lush landscape in a prime property of Kaua'i. Through the years I have seen how the main temple has been constructed. As you enter, there is a gazebo at the entrance where sarongs are provided for visitors. These are provided to have guests dress appropriately for respect before entering the temple. Additionally, there is a round stone hearth to "burn" your troubles away. Pieces of paper & pens are provided for you to write your "troubles, challenges, problems" and a couple of lighters so you may burn it to ashes. As i may have written in the past, it is a cathartic experience as you watch it burn away, and up it goes in smoke. Experience it....

The grounds are large, but you can't see it all, unless you make an appointment. Still, what you see is amazing. I don't want to spoil much, but I HIGHLY suggest visiting this location while in Kauai.
