Such a classic for ice cream! Everyone knows the quality of Kawartha's Diary is top-notch. It's always a treat when you have a scoop of Kawartha's. For this trip, I opted for the "Blue Buried Treasure" flavour in the small size in a cup. The blueberry flavour is robust and the white-chocolate (or perhaps yogurt) filled nuggets of goodness are always a fun bite, however, they do get a bit hard since it's frozen. Also, if you do choose to opt for your scoop in a cup, the small size is basically akin to a whole pint of ice cream! Definitely worth it due to the portion size but if your just going for a casual portion I would go for ice cream in a cone, as the size is more reasonable for your typical ice cream serving. We visited Kawartha Dairy on our way to Arrowhead park and had an amazing experience! The staff were friendly and they offered us samples of some of their new ice cream flavors. It was a fun treat! The variety of flavors was impressive. I couldn't find most of the flavors in my local supermarket.We ended up ordering three different flavors, but the standout for all of us was definitely the Blue Buried Treasure. It was creamy, rich, and had the perfect balance of sweetness. The blue berry jam coated with white chocolate was a good surprise. All their ice cream is high quality with a wonderful milky scent. Your first bit of guidance should be that Baby is a ridiculously large size. I don't know what's going on in Canada but Baby seems to be code for what Large is in the States. I'm not sure how you'd order an actual Baby size - Negative Baby? Your second piece of guidance is to not miss out on getting an obligatory photo on the fiberglass cows. Getting Baby scoops at Kawartha meant we weren't hungry for dinner until after 9. We shared the Death by Chocolate (good but basic and reminded me of Baskin Robbins - but overall my favorite of the lot), Maple Walnut (pretty good - the husband's favorite), and Strawberry. I found the Strawberry only OK. It needed some real strawberry taste and a bonus would be pieces of actual strawberry. (The following night we got Chocolate Covered Strawberry ice cream a mile away at Belly, which was essentially strawberry with chocolate chips, and that was evidence of what strawberry ice cream should taste like.) I am a big believer of any place that caters the people's dietary restrictions. I was amazed to see how far this place was willing to go to accommodate people. Yes this place is an ice cream shop, and yes the ice cream is wonderful, but if you have any sort of allergies they will step up. Let me explain just how far there willing to go: Obviously if someone has allergies, they are willing to wash off the spoon that scoops the ice cream, or get a fresh one. However there's always the concern with cross-contamination. If you want the dairy-free sorbet, or if you want anything and you have a peanut allergy, they won't risk scooping from an open tub. They will go to the one below it, and open that one up to make sure that yours is a very first scoop out of a fresh tub. It was my first time having their ice cream and I was quite sad that some of the flavours I wanted to try were on vacation/out of season. The small is actually rather large with two generous scoops of ice cream, so unless you're really hungry I'd probably suggest the baby instead. Guy at the counter looked like he has no patience for customers deciding what to order from the wide selection. Otherwise the Baby, Small & Huge sizes are actually all very generous servings by him. This place is a must if you're ever remotely close to the area. A bunch of us drove from Gravenhurst just to grab an ice cream at Kawartha. It was more than worth it! I'm not even a big ice cream person. Usually a couple of spoon-fulls and I've had enough. So I ordered a baby cup of Banana Boat. It was a HUGE scoop - anything but "baby". But the ice cream was amazing. Everyone devoured their ice cream. A great place with a great variety of ice cream as well as other dairy products. There is always a line because they have a very poor workflow - can only order ice cream outside or else you can skip the line by driving in your car and wasting gas and polluting the planet?
