Now reviewing their brunch because it's the best in town. I'm biased because I'm Filipino but that's fine I can be because it's such a good cultural brunch. From the pandesal with morringa butter to the silogs, this brunch takes you through a morning stroll through the Philippines. The lugaw is delicious af. Make sure when you make a reservation that you specify whether you're willing to sit at the bar. We were not careful and ended up at the bar. The Pilipino cuisine has been elevated to another level, incorporating staple sea food selections with fruity and floral balances that make any pallet happy. Last night was our first time back to Kaya since the soft opening. We meant to go back sooner but illness thwarted our plans. When you walk in the restaurant, you will notice an ocean-theme, as the Philippines has over 7,000 islands. The menu also has a series of "waves," and you should save room for this meal because there are FIVE of them, not including the add-on celebration cake and parting gift. The Sama Sama Set Menu was such a delicious dinner, artfully executed featuring various fish, noodle, and rice dishes that will leave you full and likely with a couple boxes of left overs. My husband enjoyed the reserve pairing; the sommelier does an excellent job choosing wines that match the dishes like a puzzle piece completes a puzzle. I enjoyed the first and second cocktail on the menu- I do not remember the name but they hid the alcohol pretty well amidst the flavor and olfactory profiles. Writing from the perspective of a plain vanilla midwesterner who loves new cuisine and experience, this is a pretty good way to introduce yourself to Filipino (yes, that's spelled right!) food and service ethos. I'm also married to a filipina and have traveled there many times, so I do have a base to judge from. We're from south Florida, which has a huge Filipino community, and were just visiting after great reviews on Kaya's brunch. Our group of four adults and two kids had the brunch, so the dinner menu goes unexplored. The "silogs" are the combinations of garlic rice, fried eggs, and some form of protein of your choice on the side. The crisped Wagyu beef in their "Tapsilog" was raved over by my son-in-law. My "Eggs Imelda" was a seasoned hollandaise over eggs on Pan de Sal with two huge, tasty shrimp which I loved. Pan de Sal is a soft, tasty bread roll I recommend an order of, including for coffee dunking. Also the glutinous rice pancakes with a cream, ube (purple sweet yam) and diced mango topping were a heck of an invention. Flavorings and herb choices are top notch for all dishes! Service was kind and attentive, without exception. The only disappointment was the "adsilog," or what should have been pork adobo but was unclearly described on the menu and turned out to be a vegan version using mushrooms instead of meat. The taste was right on, but that texture was not for any of us. Management took our suggestions on re-labeling that sincerely to heart. Some room for improvement stood out. The inability to reserve tables for brunch made us nervous, as did the lack of menus. They change menus often, so I understand but the fact that many reviews WRONGLY claim the set cost for brunch is $120 made us nervous. PRICES ARE REASONABLE, though the owner cannot change the references to these high prices online. Also, they readily admitted that some ingredients which should be readily available in Florida were not authentic, such as using collard greens instead of 'laing' or stewed taro leaves as a green, orange juice marinades instead of sour 'kalamansi' limes which grow prolifically in Florida ALSO: NO COFFEE! (??!!!?!) At brunch, no less??? Filipinos definitely are coffee drinkers, and this oversight left me scrambling across the street to Lineage Coffee for my wife's (excellent) brew. The free standing bungalow has been creatively and pleasantly decorated with local crafts and memorabilia, and collections of entertaining modern novels by and about the Philippine Islands are within reach...and worth a browse, actually. One of the owners chatted with us as we waited for our party to arrive, and she is extremely collegial and knowledgeable about the Philippines cuisine and culture. I'd guess she was born here, and it shows in how accessible this place feels to all new guests, regardless of whether you know the food or not. What a great experience here last night. The staff are super friendly, and are very knowledgeable about every single dish and ingredient here. At Kaya, they strive to have everything locally sourced from the mushrooms to the seafood. There is primarily indoor seating and some seating at the bar area. We spoke to both of the owners last night, Jamie and Lo are both super friendly and really want you to experience inspired Filipino food from their eyes. We tried their prefix tasting menu, and as a Filipino food is definitely inspired by Filipino cuisine. The flavors are there for the food, but are not served or presented in the way that I have been accustomed to. Each wave was explain to you about each of the ingredients and flavors that you can experience. Everything is cooked fresh and each day the menu changes. Even within the dining room, not every table will have the same exact dish as the next. For those who have never tried Filipino cuisine. Went here to celebrate a special occasion. The atmosphere in Kaya's restaurant makes it feel like you're in someone's home. The kitchen was out in the open. We can clearly see the chefs make our food. The walls were decorated by items originated in the Philippines such as the Pamaypay and the ceiling had little tokens of things Filipinos enjoy such as San Miguel Beer, Basketball, Bagoong and a lot more. They even had a Santo Nino near the front door. At the moment, I think Kaya has the best presentation of Philippine culture, not just through food, but also the interior design and atmosphere. It feels like they care about the community so they get a lot of their ingredients and products from local farms and shops. Our dessert even had ice cream from Sampaguita which is an ice cream shop that has Filipino inspired flavors. They also have guest chefs that hold mini pop ups outside Kaya that they even share in their own socials. Such an interesting concept! And they also host other activities depending on the day of week such as karaoke night. The staff was great. Very friendly and smiling people! Yes it is a pricey but I do highly recommend it for the experience and the food. Or at least to try once! It's very different from your typical fine dining. If your Filipino and skeptical of the place, as someone who's lived in the Philippines for a long time, I do think Kaya got the flavors right while also innovating and making it upscale AND bringing our culture to the US. We got the Sama Sama Set Menu which is a five-wave dinner experience. This was such a unique experience. I was with a group of people, so they had some plates where we would share with the party like family style. Kinilaw (5 out of 5) - This tasted so fresh, no fishiness, the coconut foam was not empowering and the mango brought out a little sweetness. Bahay Kubo/Watermelon and Peaches(4 out of 5) - I think this was an upscale version of "itlog na maalat" salad which in the Philippines is a salted egg with tomatoes and onion. I give it a 4 because I could barely tell it was salted egg. But I guess they did this to cater to a wider variety of palettes. Pancit Sotanghon(4 out of 5) - This was a 4 for me. For some reason, I don't think the taste hit home to me. It might have been just a bit one dimensional. But the egg on top was so crispy delicious. Dinuguan Slider (5 out of 5) - This might be my favorite one out of everything. The puto was sweet and the pork belly was so tender, and the dinuguan sauce paired so well with everything. Brilliant idea to make it as a slider! Pritong Isda (4 out of 5) - I think this might be an homage to Sinigang. The swordfish was delicious. If you eat it right away, the batter of the fish would still be crispy. I do wish there was more going on here. Like a little more vegetable. Ox Tail Kare Kare(5 out 5) - The oxtail was soft and delicious. Wish there was more sauce. The shrimp paste(bagoong) they provided paired well with this. King Crab Fried Rice(4.5 out of 5) - This was a great fried rice. Tasted like how it is in the Philippines. Not the best one I've had. This was an additional 15 dollars though because of the King Crab. I do think one would just do good with the Sinangag garlic fried rice too. Seafood Bicol Express(5 out of 5) - I've never had a seafood version of Bicol Express. So this was surprisingly new for me. It usually comes with pork. This one came with a smoked seafood sausage which turned out really delicious as well. Wish it was a little spicier but that's a subjective opinion. Adobong Kabute(4.5 out of 5) - This was an adobo(soy sauce and vinegar) with coconut milk and different types of mushrooms. I don't think I've ever had adobo with coconut milk ever. But this was surprisingly good! Great for mushroom lovers as well! Dessert Sapin Sapin | Mango Float | Calamansi Ice cream | Ube Crinkle Cookie (20 out of 20)- The Sapin-sapin was great. Wasn't too chewy. Just the right amount of bounciness. And the mango float was definitely an elevated version. It came with some type of curd. My wife and I got there as walk-ins and had to wait about 1.5 hours...we would've left, but we kept catching whiffs of the food which was enough convincing to have kept us there waiting all night. The staff was great, friendly, and made you feel right at home. It was truly an experience we'll never forget.
