Beware of Excessive Charges and Hidden Costs While the medical care at Kayal was competent, the billing practices were outrageous and left me feeling completely taken advantage of. My daughter suffered a simple ankle sprain. We first visited a local urgent care where she received an X-ray, diagnosis, and ankle brace--all for a reasonable $200 total (with my $35 copay included). They suggested a follow-up with an orthopedist, so we chose Kayal. We brought the original X-rays and brace to the appointment. Despite having everything needed to assess her injury, Kayal insisted on repeating the X-rays and replacing the existing brace with one nearly identical to the original. Their diagnosis was exactly the same: a sprained ankle. The difference? The bill was over $1,600--including $140 for their brace and hundreds more for redundant imaging. Because of how they billed, they maxed out insurance reimbursement limits from two different companies, leaving me with an additional $165 balance for X-rays alone--on top of what insurance had already paid. In short, Kayal's prices were exorbitant, unjustified, and far beyond industry norms for the same services. The experience was a hard lesson in how some medical providers exploit billing systems at patients' expense. While at Kayal, I went in for a torn tendon. Dr Rappaport talked me into surgery to make me walk flat. Yes, I agreed bc he sounded convincing. After surgery I had a year of pain and couldn't walk well after seeing him at the Kayal practice. Seeing them regularly for the pain with always PT as the answer. During this time I had HIP problems due to the foot surgery. Saw them but now was hesitant. I went to a different Podiatrist finally. The new dr decided to take the screws out and after that I was better at walking with no pain like I had for a year. The screws were TOO LONG. During this time I guess I was walking strangly due to the botched surgery hence some hip issues started to occur. I had to get a hip surgery due to the changes in my stride. And yes, I started with the hip issues while at Kayal seeing their dr's then differed thereafter to someone else. Don't trust Kayal but I'm sad to say that I thought Dr Rappaport was a good dr but felt. I'm still in pain as this was from 2022 and it's 2025 now. Every day when I have the pain - YES I THINK OF RAPPAPORT with anger that he did this to me. STAY AWAY from him & Kayal. At least that's my opinion. I had a total hip replacement with Kayal 7 days ago. Yesterday my pain meds were accidentally thrown in the trash and not recoverable. My daughter called several times today to have the meds called into my pharmacy. She started at noon. The pharmacy has still not gotten it and they close in 16 mins. Just another example of them being very hard to reach and how things are not followed through with. Obviously, this is not acceptable. After struggling for 15 years to get a diagnosis, Dr Raklyar took the time to read the piles and piles of medical records that I had and to put together all the pieces to finally give me a diagnosis. All the previous rheumatologists just looked at my bloodwork and sent me away. They could not be bothered to do all that reading! I have been in remission for a few years now thanks to Dr. Raklyar. This office is uneducated and unprofessional. When booking the appointment I specifically asked if the provider was in my insurance network and the woman on the phone told me yes. Fast forward to the next morning, I get a call from the benefits department telling me that the dr is not in network and therefore will be billing me for 20% of the cost. Wait, I was just told that she was in network? I cancelled the appointment and I rescheduled with another doctor that was in network for the following week. I get a call from their office at the original appointment time asking where I was, after I cancelled the appointment and then come to find out, they never cancelled the appointment. After reviewing my information, I was brought for X-rays and was back in the original room by 9:30AM. Dr. Dinizo arrived 2 minutes later and reviewed everything with me. Dr. Kayal is very hands on and was always there to see my dad. Leon Colao the practice administrator was very helpful and guided us throughout the process. Leon was excellent and very knowledgeable. All the staff were very friendly and informative. Appointments were very flexible and always available due to multiple offices. Dr Kayal and all the doctors were very professional and understating of my dads situation. Leon guided us every step of the way including with scheduling MRI and other test. I make a good income and have great insurance, and two things happened here: first, most of the procedure was not covered by my excellent insurance plan, and secondly, the different procedures that were conducted in my one appointment ended up costing a fortune. Cha Ching!! Beware! Two back to back appts in February. Paid $500 out of pocket because this was their policy and I was in pain. A few months later I got another bill for $255 and paid it. Then a few months later I got another bill for $128. I called the billing department and no one would call me back. I just got another bill and finally got someone on the phone and they told me that they overcharged me! I asked to speak to a supervisor and she told me that they, as a courtesy, would "waive" the last bill. What!! I told her that they owed me $66. Good thing I did my homework. I was referred her by one of my other physicians. The doctor proceeded to tell me that 4 of my displaced fractured bones were not causing my pain, that I had bursitis in a nearby location. Ok, bizarre. But, I had an MRI of said nearby location which was perfect, he then told me that he didnt trust that MRI that he wanted to do one at their facility with some kind of injection. Red flag. Second red flag was they wanted an MRI and suggested their facility only because they have the most up to date machines. They too dont take insurance, I didnt even entertain that. They forced me to schedule the appt for the injection and scan, when I tried to cancel on the phone, they were giving me all kinds of crap trying to get me to reschedule or not cancel. They wouldnt let me cancel the follow up to that appt, literally would not. I had to just not show up, which I hate doing because I respect their time. Then he also suggested a bone stimulator. Which I was apprehensive because then mechanism of action seems like it is a TENs unit or something and my fractures were deep in the body. He seemed to move on from it. A few days later I get a call that I am getting a bone stimulator, send the scan reports to the representative. What the? Needless to say, there is no doubt that all parties get a hefty kickback from it. There are multiple studies saying this thing does not work. All about the money, probably either trying to get rich or stay afloat. Maybe the physicians have some kind of quota. Who knows. But I am never going back here. read more

I injured myself at work (distal bicep rupture) and after getting it looked at in the ER, I was asked to follow up with Dr. Edward Lin of Kayal Orthopedists in Westwood. Long story short, from MRI to postoperative care (he did the surgery as well) he was great. Answered all my questions and addressed any concerns I had, very professional, and even stayed late on a Friday to refill a prescription on short notice for me. I gave 3 stars because 1) I'm very happy with the care I received from Dr. Lin. My wrist surgery in 2018 was successful. When I went back in 2019 for pain in my other wrist I was diagnosed and given a cortisone injection. 2)Unfortunately the cost of the "needle guided ultrasound" billed to my insurance (which Kayal is out of network) was outrageous. $2200 for a 10 SECOND ultrasound. The MRI I had on my wrist was $2200. How could they possibly be the same price? Not to give TMI, but I've had several 30-45 minute ultrasounds on my uterus over a 7yr span and my insurance was only charged $600-$700 for each. When I called the billing dept to ask about the charge I was told someone would get back to me. No one did. I called again was basically dismissed and told again, someone would get back to me. The 1st bill I received somehow stated it was 90 days overdue. How, when it was the 1st one I received. Still waiting for someone to get back to me, obviously the billing staff doesn't care. Guess they think I'll just give up and pay it. read more

A number of years ago I saw Dr Chad Rappaport for a major ankle problem. I am very athletic and my rt ankle suddenly turned very outward and cause me a lot of pain. Dr Rappaport spent about 40 minutes with me and said when are " we having surgery" I did not know I had a partner?. I asked him how many procedures he had done of major ankle reconstruction and he said about 8 I asked him my rehab time and 'first off the ankle for weeks, then a boot for weeks, then rehab for weeks and then PT for weeks so I kept adding up the numbers and it looked like 9 to 12 months not what I had in mind and once he knew that it was " no sale" he walked away. read more

Medically top notch, but if Dr. Kayal is responsibilities are to running this office I have a suggestion, get competent supervisors to run that part of your practice. Calling in the middle of the day and dealing with an answering service is very uncomfortable, finally getting through to a supervisor and being told that I should leave my number( multiple times) and then being assured I would get a call back and for a week nothing. In the meantime calling and getting answering service for name # and again nothing. You can have great Drs., but if I can't get an appointment what's the point.
