If you're adventurous and curious, a volcano tube tour is perfect for you. Those with disabilities.... no this is not for you. Even the short tour is pretty extensive. There are miles of lava tubes snaking throughout the underground on the Big Island. They provide hard hats and flashlights so no equipment is needed other than appropriate clothing and footwear. You will need the ability to climb ladders and ropes. Extensive history is provided during your tour. It was a great and memorable experience. read more

Exploring the cave was a wonderful experience, however, the gentleman that guides this tour is not a professional guide. He shares that he bought a piece of land to live on and later found out he had access to the lava tube and began giving tours. What he shares with you is based in his own understanding of the tube and what he has been told before - he does not have any specific education in this field. As a result it's a unique experience on a largely untouched lava tube, but the tour is more of an exploration and less of a professional tour of any type. As an example, he will not provide you with a specific address of the starting location as he doesn't want to make his property more visible to the public. This can make it nearly impossible to locate. He also does not have any additional safety net in place if (for example) there was to be an injury during a tour. Despite this, I had a wonderful experience. I encourage you to give this a go as long as you're able to accept the experience for what it is. read more

This amazing tour was the best way to start our Hawaii trip! Harry is incredibly knowledgeable about the lava tubes and Hawaii in general. He's also careful to help protect the wildlife and the condition of the cave. We did the "Pit Room" tour. Definitely wear a sweatshirt and gym shoes. You will likely get dripped on. The terrain was rough but manageable for a first time cave explorer. We took a wrong turn finding the tour site, but Harry came out to meet us. Waste of my time and gas - I booked the tour via phone (like the website suggested (https://kazumuracave.com/) on 5/17 (almost 2 weeks I n advance) for 5/28 at 1pm. All was confirmed and stated that payment was cash only. This tour was on the other side of the island, about a 2 hour drive for us so we planned the day out. FYI - he sends directions to you via email and no address as he informed me over the phone. Upon arrival, we couldn't locate the house via the instructions/directions so called the tour guide. I called multiple times (5 to be exact) and he did not pick up. I left 3 voicemails as well and still no response - I was infuriated. We were eager and looking forward to this tour - I believe this tour is private (not open to public like other cave tours) so we were excited about it. I can understand if things unexpected changes in schedule but not responding to your customer, nor informing them of any cancellations is ridiculous. On the bright side (I guess) payment is cash only so did not lose out on that but wanted to experience something other tours did not offer - such a disappointment and a poor ran "private door". read more

If you are even a little interested in the geology and natural history of the island you should definitely do one of these tours. Harry knows so so much about the caves and volcanology that you will walk away with a great wealth of knowledge. The largest group he takes is 6 or maybe 7 so you are guaranteed a very personal tour. We did the 2 hour tour and loved it. I'm sure the longer ones are even better. If you think the Thurston Lava Tubes in Volcano National Park are good enough, you are wrong, do one of Harry's tours. He is very passionate about these caves and you can tell when you hear him talk about them. He might throw a lot of facts and science at you but I honestly think that is part of the charm. 10 out 10, would recommend. Give him a call, worth the price of admission. read more

This is one of the coolest tours on the big island! It's a MUST DO! Thank goodness I found it listed on the travel book at the air b n b I stayed at. I traveled solo and had no problem finding the home indicated on the directions and instructions emailed to me ( I'm a female, if I can do it you can do it too). I did the 2 hr lava falls tour , I called the day before to make this reservation and it was last minute reservation , the tour guide was so gracious as to allow this ! It is cash only so I drove the day before to an ATM ( I pulled a bit more cash out for the Makus farmers market in Pāhoa which is amazing and huge every Sunday morning, this too is a must ! ) I learned so much on this lava tube cave tour , and got to experience complete and total darkness! Considering volcanic landscape is ever changing , you must go when you get the chance! This is cooler than the volcano tube at the volcano National park and way cooler than the Kaumana caves ( I went to all of them ) and well worth it ! read more

The 2 hour Lava Falls tour included some of the most stunning passageways and beautiful multible-level road-like lavatubes. The cave has perfect cool temperature. Harry the guide, understands the dynamics of flowing hot lava, and presents mental images of how the molten lava created the caves long ago, including all the strange formations inside, I liked the stimulating geological questions that were asked, inviting us to figure out the mysteries of how shapes were formed. There are crafted steps and ladders throughout the tunnels, which feels adventuresome. The ceilings are high, so that you don't have to walk low, or be in cramped spaces. This guy (majored in Physics) who guided us through reminded me of your HS Science teacher, he just loves the whole topic. And the topic is...LAVA TUBES! His house is over one of them! It's so fascinating to learn all about it and seeing it first hand. They have set it up so it's very safe, with ladders and ropes (not for the elderly, but we had 9 year olds and they were perfectly fine - as long as you have good footing). His family (caucasion) actually runs the place, the Kazamura name is from a previous owner. So it's about a 2 or 2.5 hour tour, they provide the flashlights, safety helmets and gloves...just wear long pants and long sleeves. Bring your camera and set it appropriately! So many amazing things to learn about lava tubes here. And his tour is only $10 per person!!! (hello, under priced totally). We tipped him generously. Try it! read more

My boyfriend and I did the maze tour which took about 5 hours. We were the only ones one the tour. It was an amazing tour with a lot more different and fascinating formations than you would ever expect lava could form. Our guide Harry, the one man operator of this place, was very knowledgeable and could tell you a lot about each formation. There was one single rope rappel, one double rope rappel, one single rope to ascend, and a lot of crawling. Since it was raining outside the tubes were very wet and we came out soaked. He offers other non techinical tours that are shorter with just as many formations that we did not go on but would be a good option for people with less time or for people who don't want to bring a harness for a single tour. Kazumura cave and our guide Harry was amazing. I was very interested in geology and chemistry back in the high school days, but the knowledge fell out as I chose a different major later. Harry was very knowledgeable, helpful and patient. He went out of his ways to explain to me about the formulations of the lava cave, which really was informative and I felt so intrigued that myself and my husband went back the second day to purchase his book "Understanding the Lava Caves". We did the "Pitroom" tour - the 3-4 hour, medium-difficulty one. We were able to cover most of the geological formations of lavacicles, benches, biological features, canyons, etc. I had to be honest and confess that at first I didn't expect to learn so much and "feel so much interest for the lava caves" - I was expecting something mildly interesting and moderately intense, and through a tourist book "Big Island Revealed" we found this caving tour. However the whole experience absolutely blew my mind about "how much knowledge and excitement you can get by observing a lava tube with an experienced professional". Indeed Harry reminded me of my favorite high school teacher! I would definitely go back again and do the "Maze" tour, once my husband's injuries heal (he had an injury prior to our trip and could not do the climbing that's required for the Maze trip). read more

It's a good thing Lonely Planet exists, otherwise we might not have found this gem of volcanic Hawaii. No signs point here, no advertisements. Probably for the better, because this tour is definitely not for everyone. Down some ladders, up some ladders, and - 15m (45ft) underground - across ancient lava fallen from the ceiling, you would be completely lost here - if not for the competent guidance from Harry. If this doesn't scare you off, you want to experience (for a few minutes) total darkness, and you fancy some very detailed insights into how lava formed this big island in many fancy ways, definitely include Kazumura Cave Tours in your travel plans. Fantastic 2-3 hr experience. If your looking for a fluffy vacation experience this is NOT it - this is 10x BETTER!! Harry had so much info and the cave is very diverse and fascinating in it's many forms. Be prepared for an authentic experience. The cave gate is locked while you are in it- but Harry is a good guide and equipment good. Cave / tube 'averages' about 16ft wide, and usually is 8-30ft ish high. Great value. read more

We did two different lava tube tours; the other one was good and enjoyable but being interested in both caves and science this one was by far the best from my point of view. The guide/owner and his family developed this section of the lava tube (which is the longest in the world) and have been giving tours for 30 years. Our guide is very knowledgable and shared many things that were of interest beyond what the other tour had, with detailed information about how the tubes and it's internal features form, the geology, mineralogy and even the biology of the organisms and microorganisms that live in the tube (did you know that slime molds group together to form a semi-sentient organism that crawls around the rock faces hunting for food?) He can offer a variety of tours from the basic and very interesting two hour one we did which is mostly smooth floored with several ladders, to longer ones with scrambling and crawling, to a full-on caving experience. Harry is extremely knowledgeable about the different lava flows, lava formations, and different types of animals that can be found in the cave. The four hour tour made for an enjoyable morning of learning about how lava flows and the different things that happen in the tubes. To get here, you have to drive on a number of gravel roads. Make sure you write down the directions when you make reservations! When we pulled up to this place, my friends were creeped out because there was a weird doll laying on a rock wall next to the drive way. Harry, the tour guide, was also a character. After we were fitted with gloves, flashlights, and a hard hat, we made our way down to the cave. Harry closed the door behind us and then locked it. The look on everyone's face was priceless. Putting all of that aside though, we all enjoyed this tour, and we all made it out alive! Harry is very passionate about the lava tube. And he always asks if he is going into too much detail. I guess prior visitors have gotten bored with all the information, but our group thought it was great. We are a bit nerdy, and I can see how this tour is not for everyone. But for us, it was incredible to see tubes within tubes, lava waterfalls, roping lava designs, etc. Harry can pretty much explain how almost every formation was made, and we enjoyed learning from him. Harry also has stories about cave uses, cave safety, animals that live in the caves, etc. Those are also entertaining and informative. I would recommend this to all of my friends. It's only $20, and it's incredible. But if you're not really interested in how things were formed or the geology, you might want to pass. read more

We found this by accident. We were told about this tour by a guide from a company the does lava hikes when we asked what else was close by for us to do. This is an amazing experience. I am being totally honest when I say this makes the Thurston lava tube look like a storm drain. The owner and his mom are a little eccentric but they are dedicated to preserving the lava tube in as close to pristine condition as possible. You must wear closed toed shoes and gloves and you cannot bring food in the cave to prevent contamination. We walked several miles of the tube. Have to climb several ladders as there are what were lava falls ( basically lava water falls in the tube) Ceiling high was anywhere from 5 ft to approx. 40 ft The colors in the stone are really something to see. read more

Unlike Thurston lave tube, this cave (also lave tube) looks pristine and has a lot of exciting features! The guide and cave entrance owner is a witty and very knowledgeable guy. My wife and I were the only participants and the guide kept us well informed and entertained for hours. The price is reasonable, despite only two of us being on the tour. There are two versions of the tour in the up-slope direction: short and long (about twice further up). I would highly recommend the longer version which we ended up taking. By the way, the cave is located in the Big Island, not Honolulu as in Yelp description. Visited August 2013. read more

This is something I would see on a documentary being done, and Harry brought it to life with humor and fun. So worth the $! Took the 2 hour tour with the family. This was quite an adventure. We stopped by the place on our way to hawaii national volcano park. It is on the way if you are coming from the hilo side. Fantastic lava tube that looks like it was made by lava. Went to the Thurston lava tubes later at the park and that looks like someone bored a hole in the earth to make a tunnel. The Kazmura lava tube has lots of features from the lava. The guide was very knowledgeable and you left feeling that you learned something. Also he only does small groups of up to 6 people. It is also very affordable for such a customized trip. $20 per person. Probably because the tour is on the guides house so low overhead on his part I guess. Skip the volcano national park and schedule a trip here. read more

What an amazing morning we spent with Harry, who taught us so much. I can honestly say it was not boring in the least, although I usually do not enjoy this type of tour. I like more fun "do it" type stuff, and this was a nice combination of everything I liked. We had to climb up and down some pipe ladders and watch our footing in places, but it was mostly very tall spaces. Harry explained all about the formations of the tubes, tubes within tubes, lava flows, insects found in the tube, and we stopped at one point and stood in complete darkness for a minute and that was also a first for me! Harry provides gloves, flashlights, and all the education you can ever want to know about the tubes. You can tell he is passionate about preserving the tubes. I highly recommend this tour. read more
