Hufstedler's canoe rental & campground - View of river from a kayak

The friendly driver offered great advice about sights and river features to watch for, including the infamous rapids at river mile 33.7. That and the quick, courteous service they provided when I first walked into their store was enough to earn Hufstedler's a five-star review. But it was the help and kindness that Mrs. Hufstedler and a group of her family and friends provided at the rapids that I am grateful for. It was our luck that they happened to be enjoying personal time on the river when my son and I chose to ignore the advice we had been given about the rapids so we could ride the waves. The first three were great fun. But the fourth and final one, a two-footer, crested the sides of our canoe and dumped enough water inside that we sank - all but the top two inches of the vessel. I was able to swim alongside it, but my son floated down the river, in a lifejacket but on his own. I'll never forget the look in his eyes - "Dad, what do we do now? - nor the voice of one of the men in Mrs. Hufstedler's group who quickly kayaked over and said, "I've got him. Don't worry." A second gentleman quickly reached me and the submerged canoe, telling me to grab the back handle of his kayak so he could tow me and my boat to shore - no easy task. A woman in their group helped my wife retrieve the paddles and another item or two. Minutes later we found our son wrapped in a towel, being tended to by Mrs. Hufstedler and other women in their group. Last night before bed I told my son, "Those people were very kind to us today. God bless them."

The lady at the front desk was rude and snarky, acting as if us using their services was a burden and an issue to her time. When we asked for a location to drop our kayaks off at to be able to float with our friends, she refused to tell us where, with rolling her eyes and loud huffs (quite literally). She was arguing with me about where i should park my car, saying we should put it at the drop in location (which she refused to give a location/pin/address to) and not worry about where we come out at. Probably one of the most childish experiences. But it doesnt stop there... once we were on the water, my friends whom rented from this place were missing items. Two people were sent on the 14 mi float WITHOUT lifejackets!! They didnt provide LIFE JACKETS!! This is extremely important; my friends lives are important! My sister who rented a canoe was given a broken oar, which we took pictures of before ever starting the float. Also, the driver of the bus to get to the drop in spot knew he had 2 vehicles following behind... yet he still chose to take multiple dirt roads, when after the float, we GPS'd back, and only had to take the dirt road that the drop in location was on... so much chaos; atleast the driver was a nice guy. At the end of the float, no one was waiting for us, so if something tragic had happened, there would have been no help. No one to save potential fatalities on the river..... Honestly the river is amazing, I would float it again... but if youre looking for an outfitter, I highly suggest using the other one in Alton, because the service of Hufstedler's is atrocious and the people do not care about you, your safety, or your life.

He was very sweet and professional, talking to us along the way about the area and what to expect from our trip. Upon arriving, the staff setting up the raft were super helpful and reassuring to a friend of mine, who's not as familiar with being on the water. Their 6 person raft was roomy enough for the 4 of us along with a small cooler, dry bag and towels we brought along. We had such a peaceful float on the Current River and had even been given (by our driver) advice on where to find a small cave and spring that was large enough to navigate in. We also saw turtles, a heron, a small weasel, too many birds and butterflies to count and dragonflies landing on our raft along the way. The color of the water, small bluffs and expansive green shores and blue skies, made this a memorable day. Carr's provided a wonderful and safe way to have this experience. Upon arriving, as they assured us, it was very easy to spot the place we hauled in. Within minutes of pulling in, they were there and ready to take us back to the lodge. Use Carr's and have an amazing time on the river!
