I would give your station 5 stars but for one employee. Chewy Virella hope I spelled the name. I just finished listening to part of his broadcast in Sunday. He pushes his political agenda mentioning immigration issues. KCSM is a music station to listen to Jazz. His opinions about politics should not be heard on your station very inappropriate. I like Latino culture. I am Caucasian and his Sunday afternoon show is targeted toward Latinos. Apparently the station manager at KCSM thinks it's ok for a dj to express his political opinion. KCSM is again in the midst of a fund drive. I am no longer volunteering, having 'aged out' of the drive from El Cerrito to San Mateo. Things at the station have both returned to pre-pandemic normal and radically changed/improved w/ the advent six months or so ago of a stellar new station manager, Dr. Robert Franklin. I haven't met Dr. Franklin, but I've heard him on the air w/ Leslie Stoval during pledge drives and love how respectfully and deferentially he treats her. Though I tend to be change averse, I like the changes he's made, w/ the addition of public affairs programming on Sunday mornings. I'm asleep when they air, for the most part, but they're music related and socially conscious. I sometimes listen to them via the Spinatron archive, particularly when I want to avoid listening to "Juke in the Back", which I detest. "Matt the Cat" reminds me of the rock n roll DJs of my youth, not a good thing, and the female announcer who does the intros and outros is just plain annoying w/ her pseudo sexuality. I don't love all programs, but I love most; and the ones I don't enjoy, I know others do. Jackson W. names his favorite announcers in his review and while I love them all, Sonny Buxton and Lee Thomas are at the top of my list. I also enjoy when Akira Tana fills in, as his pleasure in exploring the music library is so palpable. I like having Jayne Sanchez back filling in and the addition of Rachelle Rabin. Maria Marquez' "Desde la Bahia" program is a joy and of course I love Kathleen Lawton and Michael Burman. I miss Jayn Pettingill in the afternoons, although sometimes I'm up early enough to hear her the mornings she's on. Not often enough but that's what my retirement is like. I miss Melanie Berzon and Alisa Clancy, who left under the aegis of the previous station manager and have moved on to other things. I enjoy Chris Cortez as a middle aged man of 53, having heard him on the air since his 20s. I have heard about his children's births and even had the pleasure of meeting his charming family at Melanie's retirement concert at Freight & Salvage. Dr. Franklin has reinstituted student training and I look forward to more on-air talent development. I prefer live shows to prerecorded ones and hope the new students will someday expand the live programming. The point of this update is to call on other jazz lovers to contribute to the station. It needs our support. I'm one who enjoys the pledge drive pairings of the announcers, listening to their conversations about music, stories and their differing styles of creating sets. As a recent listener/member said, "Come for the music, stay for the stories.". That encapsulates my experience beautifully. Been a subscriber-member for years and I listen every day. I certainly don't like all of the songs they play, but overall the music selection and hosts are excellent. My top favorite announcers are Michael Berman (amazing jazz knowledge and taste, rarely flubs when he talks), Leslie Stoval (just great selections and her voice too), Pete Fallico, Chris Cortez, Harry Duncan, Ron Pelletier. The others are great too but haven't made as much as of an impact on me. I have respect for Jesse 'Chuy' Varela as well, especially his latin jazz show on Sunday afternoons, however I feel that his Mon-Wed Jazz in the Afternoon show is a bit indulgent and random with his "deep cut" song selection. However, if they persist on being in with the WOKE culture of today and putting their political views on-air, we will be tuning out. It really adds some sophistication to the area. I will always support this station in generous fashion. Shame that it must have fund drives where I don't believe it meets its goals. I'm calling BS on KCSM when it says that Carl Sonny Leyland "made the decision to discontinue his show". The real story is that they told him to take a 50% pay cut. Some choice, huh? Rhythm Retrospective was a great show and added significant depth to their programming. KCSM plays some great jazz, but the lie about Leyland leaving shows a real lack of transparency and integrity. GREAT MUSIC INTERRUPTED BY TOO MUCH TALK! Let me first say, that I listen to the station and support it financially. However, the station seems to operate without any management to restrain the announcers from indulging in excess chatter. The amount of music played has drifted downward as the announcer's breaks grow longer. With the pledge drives expanding, the station now plays significantly less music than similar commercial stations. This revision of the station's format from it's low-key announcers with their focus on the music to radio announcers who focus too much on themselves has been creeping for years. In my opinion, it began with the choice of Mr. Varela as Program Director. A relentless self-promoter, Mr. Varela would seem a dubious choice for that position since he often plays music which is not jazz...and worse, he is a chatterbox. So here is the list of announcers who need to restrain their speech, beginning with Mr. Varela; Mr. Varela - His style is derivative of 1960's top-forty DJ's. Mindless superlatives flow uncontrollably from his mouth, "the legendary", "the great" "the one and only". Repeatedly during the show, he compensates for his inability to say something meaningful by rapidly throwing out cliche's. Varela plays about 20% less music than other announcers because he focuses the show on himself, and what he is doing. You know you are listening to Chuy Varela because he announces it about 30 times during a 4-hour shift. If interviewing a musician, he always throws in "I play a little guitar myself." Chuy, how little is your guitar? Melanie Berzon - A serial repeater: "If you want more information about that free performance call 555-1212. Once again that number is 555-1212. So call them at 555-1212" Can't anyone tell her not to repeat things? She has a voice that becomes increasingly raspy as she reaches for emphasis. When she double-teams with Varela for the pledge drive, the two seem absolutely ecstatic about their release from having to play music. At last they can focus solely on tormenting listeners with their seriously idiotic patter. Her raspy voiced "Show me the money, honey!" combined with Varela's empty cliches is like toxic auditory gas. Michael Burman - After playing an old RCA recording that didn't list the musicians, MB said, "Now I'm going to tell you who I think played on that date, and also why I think they were on that date." Burman delights in showing his knowledge of music by telling us what high school the players went to. Someone give him an egg timer. Clifford Brown, Jr - If you don't know it by now, the American Jazz Countdown is a figment of his imagination. His shift has too much self-promotion. There are those such as Jayne Sanchez, Greg Bridges and others who continue the tradition of understated, tasteful and efficient style that started at KJAZ. Dick Conte is sometimes criticized for his tendency to piano trios. Here's the thing...Conte is so 'ear friendly' in his understated low-key patter, that you don't care. Sonny Buxton is a jewel. He is knowledgeable, funny, entertaining, and weaves his play selections into a cohesive show like no one else can do. He has only one shift a week...I make sure not to miss it. As the pledge drives go on longer, they become a severe burden for listeners to KCSM. You can't listen to this stuff for weeks on end! Someone needs to take charge of this station and restructure it to assure it's survival. If you feel that the patter has gotten excessive, vote by hitting the USEFUL button below. My parents swear that they made sure the first music I heard was Jazz! Toes tappin and be-boppin my way into this world, I was born and bred to be a 91.1 fan... In the Bay Area, where many famous Jazz musicians have their roots or were part of the West Coast Jazz movement, KCSM is keeping the dream alive! When I was growing up, my father was a DJ at KJAZ. When that station sadly turned off its turntables to the local airwaves in 1994, their collection was transferred to KCSM...and thank goodness! The announcers know their music--and well! They love sharing the history and stories (some personal) that bring the sounds of Jazz closer to its listeners. It sucks me into listening every time! With great DJs like Clifford Brown, Alisa Clancy, Dick Conte and Chuey Varela, it almost feels like KCSM is similar to NPR. Both are educational, feature discussions with musicians, and are member supported. I'm sure there are a lot of cross-over listeners, like me. KCSM oh how I love theeee, let me count the ways First I'll start with my great appreciation to Mr. Sunny Buxton for his sage like wisdom when he shares his many experiences with the those "cats." Sunny's experiences and plethora of knowledge has taught me much about the history of jazz; and his story telling is unlike any other DJ (aka Announcer) I've heard. Thank you, Sunny, I am a loyal listener and make it a policy to listen to your program every Saturday morning, and know that on the days you are out, I get a little bummed out, your like a Jazz Socrates in my book. Stay strong and keep the stories coming. Second, I love, love, love Jesse "Chuy" Varela (though I can never roll my tongue fast enough to pronounce his name correctly and, I am apparently the wrong color so he won't love me back - kidding!) ;^). Jesse too shares his sage like wisdom and has enlightened me by introducing me to a world of Latin Jazz. I love his interviews with local and international artist and love the variety of Latin he brings to the table, music from Brazil, Central and South America, Afro-Cuban and more. Again, I am a loyal listener of Chu-meister and am sure to tune into the show every Sunday, Monday and Tuesday afternoon. And Chuy, continue with your closing music, though 20 yrs old, it's a classic and always brings back wonderful memories of my childhood. Third, Fourth and Fifth, KCSM is different from many other Jazz stations as all KCSM's Announcers such as Clifford Brown, Jr.'s American count down which highlights many current artists, Chris Cortez, Dick Conte, Alisa Clancy, Melanie Berzon and the rest of the cast collectively bring together a world of jazz and they don't play that Kenny G stuff (Yuk) that so many other jazz stations play. Love the programming category and character defined by each host. I listen mostly during morning and evening commute so I listen to Morning cup of Jazz. Latin on weekend afternoons. Thank Goodness for KCSM, I grew up in the Bay Area getting my jazz from late nights at KDIA and KJAZ. Then in High School and College KJAZ and KRE. When I moved to the South Bay and KJAZ didn't always come through it was pitiful college stations like Foothill College and Santa Clara University. Pitiful because their students didn't really know Jazz (they were thankful for my request). Now KDIA is Catholic radio, The College Stations have all gone mainstream and mostly Rock. KJAZ is Spanish (though numerous pretenders have adopted the name). KRE went to KBLX and the "Quiet Storm" (which started the smooth jazz and "jazz lite" movement) and all we have left is KCSM. For those who think KCSM could go public I invite you to look around the Country. New York, L.A., Chicago, Atlanta, etc., all are huge jazz markets like the Bay Area; all have plenty of clubs and Jazz festivals that do great business and lots of records sold. But all of their private jazz stations are gone, (NY left in the 80's. Canada devotes about 4 hours a week.) Remember the fight to save KJAZ in the 90's? Modern Radio is ruled by Corporations and Marketers they need to know who's listening, what their demographics are, so they sell to them. That's why they have cut up the Rock genre up into many little specialties for specific little groups. They even offer pre-made formats all in one little bundle. KCSM's jazz is taking care of the whole community. From Big Band, Swing and Dixieland for an "older(?)" crowd to Be-Bop, Fusion, and Contemporary for a "younger(?)" crowd. Don't forget "All Out", the Blues Show, Latin Jazz, or the 50's vocalist like Billy Eckstine and Sinatra heard on Saturday Nights. Marketing people want to know how to sell to this audience. Which is why they created "Smooth Jazz!" defined as "jazzy" anything with a sax, background music, relaxing music, which is the one type KCSM DOESN'T play. There is also the satellite jazz stations those people you hear at the upper end of your cable channel. Their DJ's (if they have any) rarely talk but if you notice they use like a rotating playlist, and after awhile you get used to what and when they're going to play. Hopefully this is not the future of Jazz. There is no news on KCSM and so it's 24/7! The Pledging is a pain, but name a public station that doesn't pledge, at least they're consistent and do warn you, unlike KQED which just inserts them in as they please, puts on their best programming and then go into repeats until they do it again a few weeks later... Maybe. They are on the internet and I think they are also on satellite (I think Parlocha's show is). A lot for one little station to produce. I wish other NPR stations went full time, or that a private station could buck the trend and go solid Jazz (I believe there's a great market for an All-Blues station too). I will continue to support KCSM and be proud of (at the same time shake my head about) that the Bay Area has the only 24/7 Jazz station in the country. read more

And how can you not love a station that tells its listeners during a pledge drive that they know the phone hasn't rung for awhile because "there are some jazzers out there who are just laid-back, kick-back..." I love KCSM's music and listen all the time, but that line touched my jazz-lovin' soul and is what made me pick up the phone and donate my hard-earned clams to the cause. The most recent fund drive has ended, and the station has sadly fallen short of its goal yet again. Writing this review is like ripping off a bandage, I've been putting off for far too long, but it now has to be done. Before I go on too much farther, I've been a supporter of this station both financially and with my own time for nearly a decade. I've come to know some of the people at this station personally. They're by and large a great bunch of radio professionals, and people in general, but the station is slipping and is in need of some adjustment. If you're comfortably seated, I'll get started! Mr. Varela- I agree very much with David, Varela talks quite a bit, but says very little. He has a horrible habit of playing the same song under the jazz datebook and announcing it like he has never played it before. Now, I'm a fan of David 'Fathead' Newman, but if I have to hear Joel's Domain again, I'll lose my mind. He does the same thing with his Sunday show, at 5:50 pm, playing the same song every week. It gets me that most of the other hosts with specialty shows allow others to fill in for them, not Varela, no one is allowed into this particular kingdom. I should say that I have met him, pleasant fellow in person, but that doesn't change my opinion that he should be relieved of his on-air duties. It would be great to hear some fresher thinking for the Latin Jazz programming. Clifford Brown, Jr.- Great jazz mind, but management needs to sit down with him and figure out what day he can be there consistently, hearing the phrase "filling for Clifford Brown Jr." often grates on my nerves. Michael Burman- Nice chap, needs to talk much less than he does though, I don't need to know who the cleaning lady was at the recording studio in 1964. Lee Thomas- This guy could put me to sleep even after two cups of coffee, fills in often for Brown. Friday nights and Saturdays on this station are why I still listen and contribute, From Kathleen Lawton all the way through to Dick Conte, great stuff! I feel like Sonny Buxton is giving a college course on Jazz every Saturday morning, a true treasure! But then at 6pm Saturday the station falls asleep, when it should be shaking and swinging. Evenings in general should be a little bit hotter, bring some new listeners and contributors to the station. I see some value to having more relaxing music in the evening, but playing Satin Doll over and over is aggrivating. This station is afraid of alienating older listeners, but they're fading away, and so is their money. As I see it, this station has two options, make no changes, watch each pending fund drive become more difficult to the point where the SMCCD trustees put the station up for sale, or freshen things up and become a thriving beacon for Jazz. read more

This is my go-to station whenever I'm in the bay area. I used to listen to it even back in high school. The thing about KCSM is that, where with other radio stations in the area you may get lucky and stumble on a good half hour or more of music, it's not luck with KCSM; it's almost guaranteed. KZSU was good, but the signal was not very good on the coast, and their schedule for the programs I liked usually didn't coincide with when I was able to listen. I was always up for good jazz, though. I'm currently on the other side of the country, and I still go online to listen sometimes. I once had a girlfriend that was in love with Chris Cortez's voice. I like Lee Thomas and Michael Berman a lot...their tastes are excellent and their subtle, pleasant personas don't drown out the music. They help me concentrate when I'm working. Melanie Berzon (afternoon) is okay unless there's a fund drive underway, when she becomes a relentless nag. Alissa Clancy (in the morning) tends to play things that give me stomach acid. Greg Bridges on Thursday evenings plays weird, atonal noise that is not listenable, and Cathleen(?) Lawton on Friday evenings plays only the most dreadful, bellyaching blues one could possibly find. Clifford Brown sometimes plays interesting music, but his radio persona is irritating and I rarely listen in. By far the worst aspect of this station is their tendency to play the same promotional spots ad nauseam, for months and months. I am so tired of hearing Clifford Brown's cheesy spot for his show that I immediately turn off the radio when I hear it coming on. read more

Thank you KCSM! I recently discovered you station last year. I have recommended it to a couple of people on this side of the bay. After I hit the altamont or before I turn it to this station and here the classic Jazz sounds that is in Jazz history. Cliff Huxtable used all of these tunes that made up classic Cosby show episodes. I love listening to the sounds that come out of Redboy from this station. I just sit back and deal with the 580 traffic and sooth my mind. I say thank you cause I have a LEAD FOOT that has magnet on my toes, My lead foot has provided me with countless Speeding tickets that I have no room for traffic school at all....I have so many F-in speeding tickets I can't even count on one hand. My dream job would be a race car driver cause I love to drive fast, on windy roads especially. The 580 turn on Lakeshore is my favorite turn for about 15 years, That's me doing over 80 on that turn when I have the opportunity. That WAS me in 1994 going over 100 miles on 132 listening to Mary J Blige My Life album in my Accord cause my dad gave me a 30 day notice to get out the house . Thank you Lord for keeping me that day cause I would have went to jail on that one, cause it was beyond reckless driving. It was also Child endangerment. But Hush! Cause I aint the one to gossip so you aint heard it from me. I was crying and speeding to ...MY LIFE MY LIFE MY LIFE in the SUNSHINE! That was also me at Hayward Court trying to get my license back cause I got caught speeding in Union City and B.D.D.A.D was not in her car seat. And the judge had to open up his damm book and maximize my f-in penalty. I am sure he made an example out of me that day! People probably walked out to avoid the harsh penalty's of his wife not screwing him the night before and waited for another day. Yeah that was me in Oakland Court trying to get it back again and the Judge looks at me and tells me to SHUT UP when I try to explain why, cause he looks at my record, and I attempt to talk again and he tells me if I say one more thing I was going straight to jail. That was also me last year that the judge dismissed my speeding ticket and kept the other not stopping at the stop sign because I just had the same tickets the year before. Oh and that was also me that used my sister name and got a speeding ticket in her name and did'nt tell her and her car insurance company did. Sorry Sis. That was also me in Tracy that got another ticket and I was going to lie to the judge and everything, and because God was working it out, the Police officer told the judge he did'nt remember me and asked for the judge to dismiss the case and she told me it was my lucky day cause she did dismiss it without looking at my speeding record. Man that F-in Magnet that goes straight down on the gas pedal in whatever car I drive. But as I listen to Jazz it settles my mind and relaxes me to the point that I don't feel rushed and I don't weave in & out of traffic and get pissed off because of Nose ass drivers observing what is going on with the car accidents, or the other cars Highway Patrol has pulled over. Don't people know that if we just take a moment of appreciation to the man above that that's is not us on the side of the road, traffic would be smooth and not congested at all.. It is KCSM JAZZ that has made me a better driver on the bay area side of the altamont, and it is this classical station I don't even know the name that has me idle on the central valley side of the altamont. read more

Okay, I've heard enough of the naysayers about KCSM. Don't structure anything. Leave the format alone. All the DJs at KCSM believe that they are the world's foremost authorities on Jazz. I do too and so do all you jerks who have negative reviews about the station. I agree that the Pledge Drives are a plague, even 3 times a year is annoying as hell. But dammit you idiots, it's what we have which is more that most cities across the U.S. - so shut the 'F--k up!" To Wade D. I say this, if you like the SoCAL station then I dare you to find it streaming on the web and when you do, listen to it. with our blessings. While on a trip to L.A. in March, KLON - they now call themselves KJAZ, a a true misnomer - was having their pledge drive. They offered very 'special' gift for the members, an iPod shuffle with prerecorded crap picked by the staff, the last thing I'd want. Some nitwit picking cuts that they deemed good for me to hear, as if I couldn't decide for myself, really? They play a ton of slime jazz and since Chuck Niles died L.A. lost out completely. Helen Borgers sold out! To David D: I agree with a lot of what you have to say,I especially detest the jargon I hear repeatedly. Which to me is NOT hip and the many musicians I know do not speak that way, it's plain ass annoying. Speak proper English when you're given the priveledge of public speaking on the airwaves. I would say this to all the KCSM DJs to their faces. Many ears are listening and sometimes young people learn how to speak properly by what they hear on the airways. However, we all have an opinion and the DJs do as well. As long as they don't talk religion or politics, I'm cool. The radio station is available to us because it is a good source of promotion, it goes with the territory. Get used to it! I know they don't want me to say this but I'm going to anyhow: If you don't like it, don't listen or donate to the station. The diatribe will continue and if you want to hear jazz in any form selected by the dj on air at the time, PLEDGE some money to keep it going.
