My 20 year old AC unit stopped working and I called Kearney & Sons to get a 2nd opinion. To my pleasant surprise, the diagnostic fee was still $59, and it was that very fee 20 years ago! Furthermore, the courteous and pleasant Ms Jackie was still there too! Nevertheless, Kearney installed a great, quiet, and reasonably priced unit. On my annual inspection, Jason, did a PHENOMENAL job. In all actuality, Jason thoroughly represented the qualities that Kearney & Sons have displayed for over 20 years: honesty professional, thorough, knowledgeable, and all at a great price. Overall, I was pleased with the service (install new AC and heat pump) provided by Chuck Boengle and Steve. They arrived on-time, if not 15 minutes early, and completed the install withing the estimated 6 hours. I did however have all sorts of difficulty connecting the EcoNet thermostat. Reset the wireless router, reset my cable modem, and disconnected the actual thermostat from the wall multiple times. Not sure but there seems to be something amiss with the app. Will be calling Kearney & Sons tech support asap. I would give 4.5 stars if possible. read more

Scheduled service between 2 and 4 pm. At 2:38 pm, the office notified me the technician would be late as he was waiting on a part and it would be a little after 4 pm. Apparently it takes two and a half hours to get a part in Williamsburg as at 5 pm, I got a call from the technician who said he would be here at 5:45 pm. I told him that was unacceptable and he said I would get a call from the office the following day. Nothing. Not a call to reschedule; apology for burning up my time; for the poor service experience; nothing. Have since done better research and found a company that is respectful of one's time and is more cost effective. Please do your research and ask yourself would you do business with a company who treats their customers as they did me? read more

My mom arranged for Kearny & Sons to come by today to service her HVAC unit, but she was unwell, so I was at the house when Walt arrived, right on time. He was very professional, soft spoken, and worked so quietly that mom didn't even know he had been and gone when she woke up later on. Mom absolutely swears by Kearny & Sons and is particularly fond of Walt. She has been using their services for at least the past 14 years, and I think she really looks forward to seeing Walt, whom she calls "that nice young man". Having seen the exceptional service and attention to detail, not to mention the kindly disposition of Walt, I would join my mother in wholeheartedly recommending Kearny & Sons to anyone looking for help with their HVAC system! read more

Had an appointment time from 2-4 for what I thought was to get a new A/C no one showed or called. I called the office at 530 (which says google says "OPEN 24hrs") got voice mail, then at 6:45 someone called said the happen to be in the office who gave excuse tech must be tied up in Williamsburg. I told her I just want a new A/C since mine is over 20 yrs old she informed me the tech can still come look at it for $89.00 and make sure I want to replace it ect. I said No need I just want a price for new one. She gave me a different appt for 2 days later. (mind you the daily temps are in 90's) I had another company get me a quote, They came The next morning and installed the new unit in few hrs. Now that is service. When I went to report an enraged driver, the female who answered the phone would do nothing unless I had a truck number. The driver was going so fast I could not get one, but how many driver's can be exactly at my reported location at 7am on a Monday morning? Don't they know where their driver's are? They don't have THAT many driver's and by process of elimination it could be determined who the driver was, and I did report the first part of the plate that I could see as starting with a 33. They don't want to be accountable and have no problem risking your life, and if they do it on the highway, will they do it in your home? Look up HVAC refrigerants and see what they do to the environment when released into the air accidently or on purpose. And I know the "they're switching over to propane or _________" but that is in the speculative future. What about right now? read more

It pains me to write a review which is less than positive. However, as I find reviews to be most helpful in making decisions as to which vendors/products to hire/buy ... it is the right thing to do to share my experience. When my mother's hydronic heating system was not heating in all baseboards, we reached out to Kearney & Sons for assistance. We were happy that they were a Hampton-based business that was relatively small-scale compared to other more "corporate" companies. The first technician came on Dec 9 and attempted to diagnose the problem. We were appreciative of the gusto put in to figure out what was wrong. Air in the units seemed to be the culprit, but the technician was hesitant to attempt to bleed them due to age on the bleeders and fear they would break. Understandable. He wanted a more experienced technician to further diagnose. Unfortunately, the next available appointment for that technician was on Dec 23 ... two weeks later. When the more experience technician arrived on the 23rd, he took a quick look and determined that a pressure reducing valve & a gate valve needed to be replaced. This is where things reached a level of insanity. The FB-38 pressure reducing valve was going to be billed at a cost of $344. Actual cost is approx $75. The general gate valve was to be billed at $273. Actual cost down the street at the "orange store" is approx $10. Then, there was a final charge of $288 for "copper pipe & fittings." Wow. The total for this estimate was $905...and that didn't even include the mentioned estimate of 3 hours labor. Time heals all wounds right? Thankfully, it also affords the opportunity to do the necessary research (on both the parts and the system itself) to correct the problems. I'm happy to report that the system is now properly pressurize, bled, and functioning well. Don't get me wrong ... I understand the concept of "mark up" whether it be in the automotive repair industry, plumbing, heating, etc.. Yet, this was so far out of bounds ... and so unexpected for a hometown business. I'm saddened that our experience with Kearney & Sons was not a more positive one. :( read more

I had this company replace my old boiler in my historic home about three years ago. I was very satisfied and decided to take out a service contract with them for heating & cooling. Three months go I set up an appointment for the service tech to come and service my two AC units. He advised me that the upstairs unit coil was rusted and needed to be replaced. He also suggested that since my unit was now over 10 years old and out of warranty that I might should consider a new unit altogether. I was given two estimates: Repair $2,549 or new unit $7,660. I told him I would think it over and decided to obtain a second opinion. The second technician from another company could find NOTHING wrong with the upstairs unit! I decided to wait before writing this review just to be sure. It has now been three months I am still comfortable upstairs Either the Kearney tech was incompetent or dishonest. I am so thankful for Kearney & Sons. Any time I need them they are very responsive. Everyone who works there is very nice and down to earth, and the technicians are very knowledgeable and trustworthy. On this last visit, I asked for a leak test, and the technician came by and found the leak without the leak test equipment saving me about $500. Honestly, I would've never known that was possible either way, so I felt like they were really looking out for me, which is how I feel every time I need them. You can't buy that in a company. Great company and knowledgeable staff. Recently had a new system installed and couldn't be happier with the service.

Let me start off by saying that my entire family has used Kearney & Sons for the past 25 years. Well that will now come to a stop. I was basically screwed by one their management team. I wanted new thermostats. I was charged $1200 for two thermostats that only cost $200 a piece (didn't realize that at the time). Bought them on the stipulation that they would move them for free because we were selling our house in a few months, and that the old thermostats would be reinstalled. Nope, me being naive didn't realize that I should have had him write that down on the contract so there would be no question. Not to mention that the old thermostats were supposed to have been left, so that they could be reinstalled. Nope, they took those. I spoke to the GM, and he stated we rarely do that, and that I should have had the sales guy write it down. I didn't realize that I had to do their sales guys job. Guess I can't trust peoples word. That is probably the most frustrating part. Then he came back and said that he would do it for $500! $500 to move thermostats literally 5 miles down the street, and I would have to buy new thermostats for the home I am selling because they took my old ones. That is a joke. I spoke with another company, and guess what they are only charging me $100. This is horrible business practice. I mean did they honestly think I was making it up. $1200 is a lot to spend on thermostats. Had I known this was going to happen then I just would have waited to get new thermostats in our new house. I am very disappointed in Kearney & Son's. I have a rental in Newport News and had used Kearney & Son's with good success over the years. I was recently solicited (and purchased) their preventative maintenance program to protect my investment and my renter. Fall Inspection they indicated no problems and recent late spring they stated system performing great. 2 weeks later I get a call from my renter stating system is periodically stopping. $$$$ dollars later I am told the inside system needs replacing and they found some bad wires which required fixing. Fixed wires and stated system working good - not true!! They sent someone out again and could not diagnose problem. I called a competitor and he simply diagnosed problem as bad Thermostat - really??? About two months ago I was exploring options for a new ac system (single package unit) for our rental propriety. I received a quote from One-Hour in the total amount of $6,200. As many would do I figured I would get a second quote, my second quote was from your company Kearney & Sons, Inc. I was happy with the quote and the gentleman who conducting the estimate, it came in at $5,600 and from what I was told was better equipment, I thought great. I still had concerns, I called One-Hour in the first place because of their service and willingness to always be on time and handle issues as they present their self. I expressed my concerns about down time and the reliability about service and so on, the gentleman simply said "we can't provide the same service, we are smaller but we do our best and can guarantee 24 hour turnaround time". I thought this was a fair response and a reasonable time. So I signed on the dotted line and set up my date for installation. Fast-forward about 45 days, the new system is in and has been doing well as far as I know. I get a call on Saturday (9/1/18) from my renters about 5pm stating it is 85 degrees in the house and climbing. I placed a call to the 24 hour line and a gentleman called me back (Dave) who was very professional, he told me he was going to check it out and would let me know. A few hours later I talked with my renters who informed me that they were told it was a duct work issue and that Dave made a comment that this was a result of me (the home owner) saving 4 grand on not doing the duct work which I thought was very unprofessional. Side Note: I was told by the estimated for Kearney & Sons, Inc. that my duct work was in good shape. Dave explained to me when he called me that a part of the duct work was detaching from the insulation resulting in back pressure causing the freezing. I thought that was weird because this they attached to the system but I couldn't get a straight answer if this was an installation issue. Not to mention I was told all the duct work was going to be inspected and all joints checked which did not happen at time of installation. This happened on a Saturday afternoon, I was told it would not be fixed until Tuesday. I was told things like we don't have anyone to fix it, we don't have access to the material, but I know supply houses like Gem-Air and R.E. Michaels have a on call person to open up for materials almost any hours. I feel this this situation was handled unbelievably unprofessional with no regards to the customer. Once this repair was complete I sent Scott the GM a email explaining my concerns to hopefully help with further consumers. I received a call stating I only have a min I am in a meeting "we are sorry, we can talk more if you would like" I replayed yes please call me back. It has been over a week no call. This has by far been the worst customer service I have ever experienced. read more
