I tried to avoid coming to "Keep Portland Weird" because I'd heard it is overrated since it's just a wall in a parking lot, but honestly, I just couldn't resist not checking it out. FOMO, here :) It's basically just that phrase (haha) on its own without any fancy graphics, but I wanted to share my reviews and be part of the Yelp community. So, I added a little twist by including a collage of interesting trash bins. I guess this is one way to keep Portland clean, too. I have never seen so many trash cans throughout the city. I love murals, but the most annoying thing about them can be cars in the way of getting a good view or picture of them. I stumbled up the Keep Portland Weird mural while out walking around on our first morning while Ben was sleeping. It was during the week so cars were already there parked to be able to work. I wasn't thinking about the day/time at first until I was walking around the same area (close to our hotel) during one of the weekend mornings and realized how the day/time comes into play while trying to take photos of the different murals. Another Portland landmark when it comes to signage. This is an iconic sign and you see it in films and tv shows and such when the setting is in this particular city. Portland is indeed a weird place and that is one of the reasons that I love it so much. It's quirkiness and art oriented drive is the "weirdness" I am referring to which makes this sign highly relatable to me. Anything that can make you lovably eccentric. Of course there is the weird element where it can delve into creepy but most people can flesh out as to what is purposeful and with intent as opposed to the opposite. I consider myself to be a weirdo and people have accused me of just that throughout my life and it's something I learned pretty early on that it's a thing to be embraced rather than treating our uniqueness and eccentricities ( the harmless kind) as a crutch, burden or handicap. I remember when I was a fairly new transplant to the Pacific Northwest there was a friendly rivalry that I would hear off and on as to what was the weirdest city in America. Austin, Texas and Portland were neck to neck and from what I heard Portland won out but of course I haven't been to Austin in a very long time and before I ever heard of the rivalry so maybe down there they say they are the victors. I may find out when I go there later this Spring. But for me seeing this sign whenever I come across it is an enduring thing and I feel like I am with my tribe... both in Portland and the Pacific Northwest. read more

Famous mural in Old Town on a building. It's also a marketing gimmick. The Keep Portland Weird mural is almost as famous as the White Stag Sign. At least among the locals. You can get a picture in front of it while being weird, or whatever you feel like being to be truthful. Certainly I was trying to keep it weird around here. It almost resulted in getting into serious trouble. Thankfully this visit ended up okay, but still weird. A little about the building. This is the location of Dante's, a music venue. It's known for having some pretty crazy and fun events. This is also located close to other attractions like Voodoo Doughnut, a popular hangout for locals, and of course the famous big sign. Good place to get selfies and be goofy. It's off West Burnside Street at 3rd Avenue, north of the parking lot. The mural is a popular site for normal people, which is weird. read more

For years Portland was known for being irreverent, a city that wasn't afraid to express themselves differently, where individuality was appreciated and respected. It applied to lifestyle, art, food, expression, music - practically everything. Keep Portland Weird, a slogan which actually originated in Austin to promote local business was adopted by Portland's and became synonymous with the city's culture. This mural wall is a tribute to the slogan. You can see it while driving down West Burnside in Old Town. Locals and visitors often stop by for a selfie, especially when the parking lot of Dante's is empty And you can snap a pic with no cars. With all going on in Portland these days, I'd love to see Make Portland Safe Again or Make Portland Cool Again become the rally cry. Recently I have had many out of state friends visits and while they loved all of the activities we did at the coast, up on Mt, Hood, in Williamette Valley and Hood River, the city itself was their least favorite part of the trip. In Portland, I took them to see some beautiful gardens and parks, had fantastic meals, drove through several eclectic neighborhoods to admire the homes, but the overwhelming number of tents, garbage, broken glass from car smash ins and needles really surprised everyone and they were shocked by the lack of city intervention and action. Twice my friends woke up to find the cars parked on either side of them bashed in with belongings scattered everywhere. These are east coast people, from NJ and NY, and they were shocked. It's time to reclaim our city. Portland can be weird and safe. read more

Right behind Dante's lies one of the, if not, most famous murals in this awesome city. Keep Portland Weird. I wouldn't call it weird. Maybe, amongst the boring certain people who are beyond judgmental! I'd say it's more of an interesting, yet quaint city! The vibes that I got visiting here were quite superb and amazing to say the least. This mural is a few blocks away from the famous Voodoo Doughnut. This has to be one of the most Instagram-mable places in the city. Feel free to take as many snapshots of this place as you can. I'm sure the owners of the business where the mural is painted don't care. There is so much more I can say about my short trip to this city. Weird, maybe. Cute little sign, be ready to spend about 5 minutes here getting that perf pic for your instagram story and bouncing. Actual address is 350 W Burnside St, Portland, OR 97209. Honestly, type in "voodoo doughnut" and it's right across the street. Don't count on parking in the same lot (it fits like 10 cars) - park somewhere else and walk here. It's right behind Dante's. Best picture is taken with a selfie stick at either a high or low angle (if you take a pic straight on, you'll look super small and the words won't fit). Be prepared to ask strangers or experiment for a long time with your go-pro stick because it is a rough struggle trying to get this entire sign in one picture. Come either really early or late if you want to avoid crowds/ cars. I'm not really sure why this is a huge attraction (I mean it is a pretty cute cover photo but it's just honestly okay) - I would suggest just adding it on as a tourist stop if you happen to be passing by this area because you're going to Voodoo or another bar nearby. This is a cute little must see in Portland that is super simple to drop by for a quick photo op. The actual address is (350 W Burnside St, Portland, OR 97209) as it's right behind Dante's. We snapped a few shots (highly recommend that you take the pic from the sidewalk and not the parking lot since the cars prove an obsticle) and went on our way as the line for Voodoo doughnuts was insane. Curiously enough, I'd seen this on many a "Top Things to Do in Portland" list. I didn't pay much mind to it though so I was thrilled when we just happened to stumble upon the mural in our search for parking in the area. Because the mural is in a lot, you'll be hard-pressed to get a car-free shot. The lot is a pretty pricey one--$6 an hour! Boo. Fortunately, I was on work travel, so I didn't mind as much heh. The lot is super close to VooDoo donuts, so if that's where you're headed, be sure to make time to catch a selfie here too. Oh and when parking in the extra long spots, pull your car in all the way up. It seems silly to me--how am I supposed to get out if someone pulls in behind me and I want to leave before the other car does??-- but we were reprimanded by the parking staff for not pulling all the way up. In the end, we just opted for a regular-sized spot. read more

The only thing to really say about this is that the city is as true as its signage. Major tourist trap because funny enough, this sign is really just a parking lot right across from Voodoo Doughnuts. It's great to see in person especially when Portland gives you its bright blue skies on its rare sunny but cloud-filled days. As touristy as it is, I couldn't miss the chance to see it. It was a mission because I had a list of Portland sights I wanted to see and because this one is one of their more iconic ones, I did a quick jump out of my friend's car, dashed through the parking lot & asked a sweet family to take a quick photo op as I caught my breath! However, because it is Portland that whole little scene is much more common than you think. If it's considered weird, don't ever feel self-conscious about it because Portland wants you to be weird! Just a cute lil ole sign, nothing special, but still a must visit as it is the touristy thing to do to show on photo that you've been to Portland. Voodoo Donuts is located right across the street so that's pretty convenient. We arrived on a Friday at noon and didn't know we need a monthly parking pass in order to park in the lot so we parked and got screamed at by some parking manager. Ohhhhkay lady, chill. Once we told her that we only wanted a quick picture of the sign she said we can parallel park and block some of the cars there but cannot park in an actual space. Came here during Covid and riots so almost entire downtown was closed and boarded up. We were happy to see Voodoo Donuts open so we parked here. I don't remember if I googled for this landmark first or Voodoo Donuts first but I was happy to kill two birds with one stone! I paid $6 for one hour at this parking lot. The Snapchat filter location for this landmark spelled weird wrong and that bugs the crap out of me. I will include the picture below so you know what I'm talking about haha. It's really cool to see celebrities post themselves at this landmark cuz it makes me think dang I could have met them. Overall this is a must visit spot when you're visiting Portland because it is truly one of a kind and I don't know any other cities anywhere that has something cool like this. Just know that there isn't a public restroom anywhere nearby cuz or Covid. That will probably be a forever thing. I'm sure employees everywhere are happy to close their restrooms to the public haha. Overall come to downtown Portland to take pictures with this cool unique landmark. Be prepared to stand back hella far to get the whole sign! read more

The only bad thing is that it's right in the middle of a busy parking lot so sometimes the mural will be blocked by work vans and taxis.
