I loved this statue as a kid, this and Bob;s Big Boy were fun for my bro and I. Paul was big, strong, seemed like a hero and protector of the city. My opinion has changed, but it is still a cool landmark. Probably the best free photo op in Portland! It turned out the Paul Bunyan statue (no babe tho!) was a short walk from our airbnb (unplanned honestly!) and was a ton of fun to stop by! The statue was actually taller than expected, and in a much smaller area (it's really just a small corner of an end street) but was easy to walk to and get picked up from as it's listed in Lyft's directory XD I'd love to see a bit more about the statue written somewhere, but all in all a definite wonderful first stop on our Portland trip and absolutely set the ton for how fabulous the weekend would be! read more

What everyone gets wrong about this Statue is its true Importance. Paul was built to ward off Raiding parties from the north trying to steal our Children and Cattle. He was also Constructed from the blood and flesh and then covered in a plaster shell to keep those meaty bits safe. Sort of like an M&M. His mortal enemy and true rival is Harvey the Bunny who stalks the backroads of Tualatin. After their battle back in 69 neither of them left without a few scars and decided to have a truce of sorts. There's not much to do here other than gawk at a giant statue, but it's a cool photo opportunity for your social feeds nonetheless. Not sure if you're supposed to, but you can get pretty up close and personal with Mr. Bunyon. If you're planning on getting weird, just know that this landmark is on a busy street, so you'll be silently judged while traffic passes and you do whatever pose you feel inclined to do. Wow! An incredibly large Paul Bunyan Statue (has been here since 1959) in the middle of 2 busy intersections (in Kenton), in front of a Wells Fargo Branch. Only in Portland, Oregon. After my husband and I had visited the Victorian Belle for The Miracle of a Million Lights Christmas display, I found the yelp page for this monstrous statue and decided to head over (only 2 miles away). We arrived a little after 9 pm and decided to just park at the Wells Fargo parking lot since they were closed and then just walked around to snap a few photos. At this time, no one was around so we could take some people free photos. Pretty cool that Paul Bunyan, this rugged ol' lumberjack of a man stands so tall with his mighty ax. Definitely an interesting sight to see and worth a stop and photo op if you are in the area. read more

When in Portland... I'm still not really sure why there's a massive monument to a lumberjack right off the freeway here, but I like it! Lumberjacks are in right now, and I've kinda bought into the whole movement. Plaid flannel shirts and jeans have been my code of comfort this winter, and I've really started to like it. And this statue is the ultimate epic monument to lumberjacks the world over. But I still don't know why it's here in Portland. I mean, they do have a large population of Lumbersexuals, but this had to be here before they arrived. As I write this I'm recalling a large number of placards around the statue. I love these pieces of folk art. This Paul Bunyan statue was built in honor of Oregon's Centennial in 1959. Paul is 31 feet high and is made of cement over a metal armature. The Oregon Centennial is very vivid in my mind. My dad grew a beard to honor Oregon's pioneer heritage, and we attended The Pendleton Roundup (Let 'Er Buck). I have seen the deep deformities gouged in the Blue Mountains left by the wagon trains as they came across on The Oregon Trail. So much much else went on as well. I'm very fond of Paul Bunyan and pleased with his maintenance, and of course he is also a symbol of the importance of the logging industry in Oregon (My dad was a logger before he started his own business in Portland shortly before I was born). Just like so many landmarks in downtown Portland, I love Paul Bunyan. I guess I wonder if Blue, the giant ox, misses Paul? read more

This statue is soooo, well, it's so damn Portland, and I love portland! It was a surprise destination on a recent double decker bus tour and bar crawl that we were on for work and I thought it was the perfect touch to really get us in the "lumber-jack" and "lumber-jill" mood. The statue itself is massive and a little beat but that is exactly what you'd expect of Paul Bunyan, right? Rugged, tattered and rough around the edges. I had to visit Paul Bunyan. I just had to. It's on the list of things to do in Portland. It's, seriously, like on every list. He's pretty tall, but I thought he'd be taller. His paint is peeling quite a bit, but he's still impressive as a statue. Plus, every time I think of Paul Bunyon, I think of the Disney short with Babe, his blue ox. The statue is on the corner in front of a bank, and if you cross the street, you'll see Babe's blue hoof prints. I think it's a see if you have time, and it only take a couple minutes. read more

What a random, yet not so surprising Portland find. I hate to not give the statue 5 stars but aside from standing next to it and taking a photo, there's not much else to do. It's definitely cool to check out and see if you're in the area. It's well built and tall enough for people to sit or stand on for taking photos. In fact, he's big enough for a group of 20 or so people to take their photo with. Just be careful of the busy intersection because you'll need to get in the street to take a shot of that many people. This place is adorable. I love Portland first of all, and this is just yet another funny quirky thing to stumble upon. He was built in 1959 in honor of the centennial of Oregon's statehood during the Centennial Exposition and International Trade Fair that year. Relocated for the light rail in 2002 and don't worry, BABE is close by! Across Denver Avenue from the statue, and in front of what was once the machine shop, the relocation included the installation of four blue cloven-hoof posts honoring Bunyan's constant companion. The Kenton neighborhood is amazing to begin with and this is a great end cap to their North end. Charming and fun stop on any trip out to North Portland. Make it a day, grab some great grub from any number of charming spots on old Main street and go to the park just West by 2 blocks! read more

A few years ago, I happened to mention to a coworker that I'd gone to Portland for the weekend. She asked me if I visited Paul Bunyan while there. I had no idea what she was talking about. "What's this you say about Paul Bunyan?," inquired I. You can be damn sure that, the next time I was in Portland, I made it a point to seek out the handsome, towering lumberman. Located just off I-5 when coming into town (and just across from the Kenton/N. Denver Ave. MAX station when already there), Paul B. is super easy to find. He stands watch over a busy intersection and is one of many things that helps to "keep Portland weird" (but only in the most fabulous way). Even more cool, because of Paul B., we discovered the fabulous Kenton neighborhood and found, among other places, Salvage Works, Homebrew Exchange, and 7 Bucks a Wack. Now, we make it a point to go say hey to Paul B. most any time we are in town. read more

We weren't locals to Portland but wanted to see the Paul Bunyan statue. Took the Max orange line to get there and existed the Kenton stop. When you get off you can't miss it. We were here a few weeks ago on our last day in portland and we had to make a stop here before heading back to california. Arrived here around 10am and there was nobody there at all. The statue is slightly fading but still looks fine to me and worth taking a few photos. It is located right at the corner intersection of a stop light so it can be awkward to take pics while people in their cars are watching, but who cares right?
