Hale Ki'i Nani was our home away from home on this last trip to the Big Island. It is located in…read morePahoa, HI, on Ki'i Nani Street....so named appropriately.
My wonderful husband booked this gem through vrbo.com. It was in the area we wanted to be in and looked clean and inviting. When I arrived it was night time and they had already been there for the afternoon. The driveway is U-shaped and we were able to pull right in to the carport. There was a secured gate/door entrance to an area that has the laundry area completed with a table for folding your clothes, there is a water catchment system with a filtration system to give you potable water. There is a door to the house which leads to the stairs up to the second level of the house. there is a small living room and a kitchen/dining room with a good size table where we ate many meals. Down the hall there are 2 bedrooms (Queen sized beds in each) and one bathroom. There are clean linens, lots of pillows, and the whole place was simply well put together.
The kitchen was great for us and had everything that we needed (pots, pans, flatware, dishes, mugs, wine glasses, wine opener, utensils, etc) and somethings we used that we didn't need (juicer, coffee grinder, strainers, etc.) there was a stove/oven and a full sized fridge (with ice maker/water dispenser).
I fell asleep in the cool Pahoa air...to the sound of the "jungle" frogs, birds, rain, wind....it was actually quite loud, but peacefully loud.
When I woke up the next morning I made some breakfast, took my travel yoga mat out of the bag and set it up on the outdoor lanai. Morning yoga was so relaxing and I realized that there was a HUGE yard with lots of fruit trees. We had fresh starfruit, oranges, avocados, and there was a bunch of bananas hanging in the carport. There is so much space in the yard that I almost suggested pitching a tent to "camp" one night. Around the back side of the house there was an outdoor stone paved shower....patches of bamboo...and more lush greenery.
We spend hours lounging on the lanai watching the rain rain rain...we hung out in the small but comfortable living room...and didn't watch the tv/dvd set up even once.
We adventured all over the island and were glad to get back to our hale in Pahoa at the end of the day.
Overall....it was perfect for us, there are some things like the one bathroom is in the hallway (convenient for location) but the slatted door made privacy a little scarce...and the mosquitoes will getcha if you leave the screen door open. But that could be anywhere.
Would we return? definitely. Recommend? Absolutely (for small families)
On a side note...we forgot our garmin charger and realized it when we got home, called the owner and it was in our mailbox within the week....above and beyond. :)
