We had a unique and wonderful experience at Volcano Village Lodge. The rooms are located in the middle of a rainforest with floor-to-ceiling windows so you feel you're right in the middle of nature. The friendly and helpful staff made sure we had a great experience. Breakfast each morning was filling and delicious. They were even able to accommodate my dairy-free diet, which I really appreciated. If you're lucky, the moist and rich homemade brownies will also be available in the lobby. Just be sure to stock up before the office closes each day. We ordered picnic lunches from the lodge for our day hiking at Volcanoes National Park. While the sandwiches were average, the lunches included wine and an impressive number of snacks. The snacks lasted all day and we even had enough to bring some home on the plane. The property is only a 10-15 min drive to Volcanoes National Park making it easy to get there. One thing to note: the wifi was very unreliable during our stay. This could be a pro or con depending on your needs. read more

First question first: would we stay here again? Yes. It's a charming, quiet, unique place to spend a few nights in a rain forest. The Volcano Village Lodge rates high on the cool factor. You get your own suite separated from the others and you're positioned up into the jungle in a glass room. The surroundings are quiet, and at night, even sort of magical as the frogs begin singing. Everything is wood and natural looking. You're at an elevation because of the volcano uplift so while there's no air conditioning, the place cools off nightly at night. There's no TV signal (though the room has a TV with DVDs) and there is a wifi signal, but it's spotty. You decide whether this is a plus or a minus. Personally, I find being insulated from modern digital interruption to be a plus, though I suppose that could be achieved anywhere by just turning things off - which I never do. The staff here are friendly, funny, and wonderful. A definite plus. The Volcano Village Lodge buildings themselves are a bit shopworn. They're clean, but just a little tired, I'd say. The place looks like it hasn't had a major reinvestment in a while, and the jungle dampness must be relentless on the wood. The "town" of Volcano has some rough spots. I refer to them as meth-houses, but I don't really know. There's a nearby sign installed by a property owner asking people not to dump pig guts on their property. We loved this place, it was cozy and nice and they were full of helpful recommendations. We would definitely stay here again.

My wife and our two children, aged 10 and 12, spent 3 nights here as we explored Volcanoes National Park and the eastern side of the Big Island. The Mauna Loa room was spacious enough for all of us (our 10 year old slept in the loft), the room was gorgeous and the rainforest setting even better. Lisa and John were our innkeepers while there and catered to our daughter's dietary needs perfectly. All of the food was delicious. It's only about 5 minutes to the park, which was super convenient for hiking during the day and seeing the stars and lava at night. read more

Although picturesque and charming, it was also death by a thousand paper cuts, which is why I give it 3.5 stars. Considering the price, the cons should not exist. This place was incredible. The experience was so refreshing after staying in the Hilton Waikoloa Village. Definitely more pros and minimal things that could be improved upon. The location: Despite this hotel being in the middle of a rain forest, we did not see very many bugs if at all, and certainly not inside the room. Also, the location is just so magical. You hear the pitter patter of the rain all day and night. Simply lovely. The room: We visited with our two children and stayed in their largest lodge. It was the perfect size for us. It included two beds, one of which was probably a California king and the other of which was probably a full-size bed. The layout of the room was also comfortable and convenient. My suggestion to them would be to make the upstairs loft safer to avoid any potential injuries for children. They should add a handheld shower in this room as the kids had a very challenging time showering on our first night so we skipped their showers on the second night. The food: They provide breakfast in your fridge the night before and I thought the food was fine. Nothing super great but also not the worst breakfast I've had. They accommodated our vegetarian needs - one day was French toast and pancakes and another was vegan burritos. I wished they had milk for the kids. Also, our water kettle was broken and not replaced during our stay meaning we couldn't make tea in the mornings. The volcano: The proximity to the Park is unbeatable. We visited Volcano House and the Park and had tremendous experiences seeing the active volcano. Truly an experience we will never forget. The amenities, etc.: The lodge kitten Gina was a huge perk for our kids who are cat-lovers! The hot tub was a wonderful activity for us. We had fine Wifi and it was sufficient for our needs. They have dvds that you can rent (for free) and our kids were thrilled to watch PJ Masks and The Minions during downtime. They have umbrellas for guests to borrow. Quite possibly my favorite stay at any lodging place in Hawaii. Very much depends on what kind of experience ones looking for. They we stayed in one of 5 quaint, beautiful, cozy cottages. Rained most of the time which adds to the charm in my opinion . Our cottage had a room with a kitchenette, loft, nice big bathroom, small second bedroom, fireplace, and big nice lanai to drink our morning coffee and eat our homemade breakfast provided. Close to a few restaurants, small stores, and we were in volcanos National park. We were lucky to get to see the lava at night as well as the day. We had three people and plenty of room. I already want to go back! Lovely little get away from Maui. Highly recommend and honestly now that I've been to the best, I won't go anywhere else! My wife, two sons (12 yrs, 10 yrs), and I enjoyed a 3 night stay here in August. In the Mauna Loa suite, we liked the open space and glass windows. This place has more pros than cons. We slept really well here because of the peaceful surroundings, comfortable mattresses, and cool temperatures. Because Volcano Village is at a relatively high elevation (3,000 feet), you don't have any mosquitos. We enjoyed the Kona Coffee and breakfast which was placed in the mini-fridge at night. The only downside here was a spotty WiFi connection. In August 2018, the Volcano National Park was still closed (due to eruptions and lava fissures since May 2018). While we took day trips to the Kamakua Coast and the Mauna Kea Visitor Information Station, I would say that Volcano Village Lodge is not a convenient location for an extended stay unless you plan to visit Volcano National Park. read more

A perfect oasis. Volcano Village Lodge provided the most comfortable hideaway in the middle of a lush forest environment. The cool, misty climate in the higher elevations of the volcano provided an excellent backdrop for getting back to nature and ourselves. It was exactly what was needed after our long travels from the mainland to the beautiful island of Kona, and this is definitely one of the gems of the Big Island. Even the lack of wi-fi added a little something to the experience, as we were able to completely disconnect and just share and spend time with our friends, enjoying each other's company, uninterrupted by technology. The beds were quite comfortable and sleep was deep and restful. At night, you could drift off to sleep while enjoying the sounds of the rain on the roof, or the symphony of frogs, or both of you're lucky. Even though the Lodge was very remote, we were quite happy to be able to rinse off and recharge in the hot tub after we had spent the day exploring the volcano. It was such a revitalizing feeling to alternate between the steamy water and the chilly air. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful with recommendations of things to do in the area and places to eat. Additionally, they provided healthy, nutritious, filling, and delicious breakfast for us each morning we were there. The right thing to fuel you for your day's journeys. When I return to Kona, I will definitely be spending time with Pua and her staff, and diving deep into relaxation at the Volcano Village Lodge read more

This place is amazing! So different than a typical Hawaiian get-away. The small town of Volcano is an absolute jungle paradise without any of the scary predators or pests. It was warm and sunny everyday and rained gently every night. Volcano Village Lodge is an amazing private retreat. The lodge is only a five minute drive from Volcanoes National Park. Our room was the Haleakala. It's a beautiful octagon shaped lodge with handsome exposed wood work and large windows looking out into thick pristine jungle. The lodges are perfectly set to give you privacy even with the blinds raised. we even had a romantic fireplace for the chilly nights and a gorgeous private patio complete with rocking chairs to enjoy our morning coffee on. The room had everything we needed including breakfast for each morning placed in your refrigerator the night before so you could eat whenever you'd like. Some of our best memories from the trip are of an amazing warm Hawaiian breakfast and coffee in room right after rolling about of bed. The jacuzzi was exceptionally well kept and was a great way to end the days adventures. Finally, the service was incredible. Pua was an exceptional host and gave us the best recommendations for places we wouldn't have found otherwise. She takes incredible pride in running an amazing B and B and treated us like old friends. This was probably the most beautiful, unique and memorable place we've ever stayed. This is the place to go to have an amazing experience and make great vacation memories. This is a rustic lodge. We loved our stay here. We had breakfast daily. And it was yummy and filling. Our lodge was a decent size. We did share the bathroom with a spider. Didn't have it in me to kill it. She stayed on her web the entire stay so we got along. Don't look under the bed-lots of dust bunnies. The grounds are pretty. And you hear the frogs (coqui) sing at night. But really, I would return. Everyone here was friendly and helpful. read more

This location is very close to the Volcano National Park. It's a very quiet location and you definitely get a feel for being in the rainforest. Nice to hear the different sounds in the evening and the mornings. In the evening, you can hear an orchestra of coqui frogs singing to you and in the morning, the roosters are beckoning you to wake up. Pua and her team have done a great job with the lodge. The rooms have been thoughtfully equipped from a warming towel rack to a warm fire heater! Each morning's breakfast provides enough energy for the day :). This is a very unique property set in a subtropical highland rainforest. We stayed in the Kiluea room which was delightful. Three sides of our room were floor to ceiling glass overlooking Hapu'u ferns with leaves the size of a car! The room was immaculately clean with the most comfy mattress ever and a small gas stove that made the room cozy every night as we were falling asleep listening to the rain on the roof (after we took our nightly hot tub soak). The bathroom had a large shower with an endless supply of hot water and heated towel racks. Breakfast was supplied daily and was delicious. Fresh local fruits plus french toast, quiche and sausage that we warmed in our microwave. They also replenished a snack basket with granola bars and nuts and tasty treats daily. And of course, they made fresh coffee and a coffee maker available. We enjoyed wandering through the garden paths and seeing the statues, pheasants and real live pitcher plants! Although there was a caretaker and several other couples staying at the property, we never saw a single other soul, except for the pretty cat that lives there! Need I say more to entice you to stay here? We highly recommend this affordable luxury experience while you are visiting Volcano National Park! read more

We LOVED staying here! It was such a unique experience to wake up in the rain forest. The grounds are gorgeous and it is very quiet and peaceful. We loved the breakfasts that were served and the variety of tropical fruits - delicious! We didn't interact too much with the staff, but when we did they were super helpful and friendly. This is a great choice for a quiet, romantic getaway, and close by to the Volcano National Park (5-10 min drive). What a gem. This is an oasis in the jungle - a peaceful, sexy, romantic and quaint oasis. We only stayed one night, but enjoyed every moment from beginning to end (note: they are one of the *very* few places in Volcano who allow you to stay only one night, and they do change you an extra $50 for it). We stayed in the largest cabin, the Mauna Loa, and it was huge for two people. There was a large main room and a smaller bedroom, as well as a meditation loft. The bathroom had a good-sized shower stall and towel warmers. The bed is VERY comfy (memory foam), and it is wonderful to wake up surrounded by the trees. This place is the definition of tranquility. The privacy screens on the floor-to-ceiling windows were a bit see through, but the distance between huts and the trees provide plenty of privacy. We also enjoyed a morning soak in the hot tub. Everything was well maintained, and they provided a breakfast of french toast, an entire plate of fruit, and plenty of snacks as well. The fresh Kona coffee was nice and strong - not your typical hotel coffee! This might be my new favorite spot on earth :) read more

I attempted a payment to Volcano Village Inn on Oct but my card was rejected, so I went for another property's services. The Volcano Village Inn held my credit card information and charged my card $1210 in Dec without my knowledge. I immediately asked them to cancel but the manager ghosted me. I tried to call them for two weeks and even went to the property in person hoping to have someone to talk to. At last I had no choice but submit a lawsuit to local court. Their management is chaotic.Avoid this place if you don't want your vacation plans almost ruined. read more

We spent NYE here after visiting Volcano National Park and it was such a unique and special experience! The rooms were clean and private, with all glass walls and surrounded by rainforest trees! We found our keys easily, enjoyed our room and the thoughtful touches with heating rods for our towels, breakfast basket with fruit and snacks, the little fridge and our juices collection. We LOVED our stay here. This was the last stop on our honeymoon, and a perfect way to really relax. We stayed 3 nights in the Haleakala room and got the best sleep ever. It was chilly and rainy when we arrived, so the fireplace was very appreciated! It warmed the room right up. The bed also had a heating pad with separate controls for each side. There were fuzzy bathrobes and slippers to lounge in, and a towel warmer in the bathroom. We're from New England, so it really felt like a cozy winter-style cabin, just in the rain forest! Each room is separate from the others and feels very private & secluded. We actually never saw or heard another guest during our stay. There's snacks, books and movies available (no TV reception, but who cares!) The breakfasts were delicious. One day was an egg/potato/sausage baked casserole, another was french toast, another were breakfast burritos. Always fresh fruit (papaya, grapes, strawberries, pineapple) and the Kona coffee in the room was amazing. I was thrilled to have a real coffee machine (not a keurig). We were so happy to have breakfast delivered to us and ready in our mini fridge for the next day. We could go at our own pace and heat things up in the toaster oven or microwave when needed. Due to the landscape and style of rooms, I wondered if we'd see any critters or bugs, but never saw a single one. I'm so happy we decided to stay on this side of the island, rather than Kona. We got our beaches in on Maui, and switched it up with the rain forest on the big island. We did drive to Kona one day, which was a little over 2 hours, but the drive was an experience too. So many different landscapes from rain forest to desert to lava rock to beach... all on one road! Shout-out to Pua, the inn keeper. She was wonderfully friendly and a wealth of knowledge for places to go. We can't wait to come back to this peaceful, warm and inviting place. read more

In the email I received, which is posted below, Village Voice Lodge promised to give me a refund (excluding a cancellation fee). This place is wonderful...beautifully built and appointed cabins tucked in the forest just 10 minutes away from the Volcano. Breakfast was hearty - fruit, frittata and choice of cereals and granola bars, coffee and tea. Lots of orchids and other flowers surrounding the cabins contribute to the property's tranquil setting. The Lodge is one of my favorite places to stay. We stayed in the Mauna Loa room while hiking on the Mauna Loa. The room was perfect for a family of four who want to experience the rain forest. Breakfast was delish and served in your room. But the most memorable aspect of the Lodge is the incredible sky of stars at night. If you're touring Volcano park, make sure to stay a night or more here. read more

Stayed only one night here but wish we had stayed longer. Rooms are adorable, cozy and relaxing. Its like staying in a treehouse. I personally did not find this place to be five star worthy but it became one of the highlights for our honeymoon so based on the happiness level of my wife, they get five stars. This is a small bed and breakfast type place nestled in the backwoods near Volcano, HI. Due to some regulations they are not allowed to serve hot breakfast but they did provide a breakfast in the fridge every afternoon to be eaten the next morning at your convenience. I loved this part as I wanted us to be on our own schedule not on the schedule of the B &B. They even provided us with a bottle of champagne as it was New Years Eve. The room was pretty clean and very updated. There is no cable television but that was to be expected with its more remote location. They do have a very large selection of movies to take back to your room for free to watch, however. The first night we stayed here it rained all night with thunder rumbling in the background. I will never forget the experience of sleeping in the jungle with the rain and thunder in the background. For anyone looking for a few day getaway then this is certainly the best place as it is within ten minutes of the Kilauea Volcano. read more

My best friend and I found this place on line for a last minute trip to the volcano. We didn't really know what to expect. At first we were a little surprised at how small it is (6 rooms), and how secluded it felt. That feeling soon passed and we immediately began to enjoy the experience. We have a beautiful view looking at the rainforest. They stocked our fridge with fresh fruit, and a hot meal for the morning. A table in the corner of the room is set up with a basket full of snakes. Coffee , tea, hot chocolate, granola bars, oat meal,, You name it I feel like it's in the basket. There is no cable here, but you do have choices for DVDs in the main lobby. Wifi works great:) All in all I would come back again, it's peaceful, and the staff was friendly and helpful :) read more

Wow! This place is super quiet, super low key and incredibly beautiful. The rainforest setting and privacy make this place a special Hawaiian experience. We stayed 3 nights, did some great hikes in the national park (a very short drive away) - I could easily fill up 3 more days! Loved having a little kitchen and some snacks; breakfasts and a packed lunch were delicious (and our innkeeper accommodated a vegetarian with ease). I can't imagine a better spot to recharge or spend an afternoon reading a book in your treehouse loft (we stayed in the Mauna Loa room). read more

Very peaceful. I am vegan and they accommodated this with great results, even providing champagne for our anniversary. The room was very nice, the bed great, the bathroom spacious and we loved the towel warmer. We enjoyed the hot tub, but not real comfortable to stretch out in. We were in the Moana Loa room and there was absolutely no privacy...even with the blinds pulled 3 sides were viewable to anyone walking by to their own room. A few 4' high screens would have taken care of the problem and not obstructed the view of the rain forest... for these prices you would expect better. read more

Our stay was brief, arriving about 3 pm the day of our stay we were shocked to see a shabby building calling it's self a lodge. THE ROOM AND THE ROOM FOR OUR GUEST WAS PREPAID AND COULD ONLY BE CANCELLED THE DAY WE FLEW IMTO HAWAII! I requested a first floor room for my husband who after three hip surgeries has trouble with stairs. We were shown a room ( up 4 stairs) and on the extreme end of the so called lodge. It was old shabby and stark. When I complained we were given a a room by the stairs but need to wait for it. Our guests didn't bother looking at theirs. We sat outside for a cocktail on dirty chairs and wet tables to the smell of an overflowing septic system. Since we hadn't moved into our rooms we and our guests left to look for other accommodations. We found the Kīlauea Lodge a couple of miles away. Delightful, clean, amazing staff, charming rooms, hot tub and the best food we have had to date! When we returns within 45 minutes the Volcano House refused to refund our two rooms because, site unseen, we hadn't cancelled on Jan. 11th ( while we were flying) for our stay on the 22nd. Save yourselves the grief and stay at the Kīlauea Lodge and have a great experience meeting folks from around the world in front of the beautiful fireplace. read more
