GO SEE DR. ALEX! 2…read moreyears ago, I found myself just shy of 40, with inexplicable, debilitating back pain that just wouldn't go away. I was facing the possibility of not being able to pick up my kids, or even play with them. Felt old age creeping in before I had even hit the middle. I saw Dr. Alex for some chiropractic work. He was happy to do it (and very skilled), but told me that the solution wasn't to just adjust myself back into place; it was to build up my strength so that it could hold its own. He encouraged me to try out some 1:1 training sessions with him, and see for myself the difference it could make. I've never looked back. Up to this point, I'd never been a disciplined "workout guy"; I never really knew what to do on my own, and didn't have the discipline to actually do it. But Dr. Alex makes training so accessible, effective, and fun that I genuinely look forward to seeing him every week! I FEEL AMAZING. And now, I think of my body as something that enables me, instead of hinders me. It's liberating and inspiring, and I implore you to give yourself a chance to experience the same thing. (I also have a legit booty now)

Your basic gym, and I mean that in the best way. Very few meatheads as a rule, and the ones that…read moreare there are the cool kind who just like working out a lot. Mostly very Portland community members. A fair number of regular older folks-- myself included, I imagine-- and an otherwise diverse crowd (for Portland, that is.) It's been meticulously clean in the months that I've been going there. There's always someone walking around wiping things off, redistributing weights to their racks, and just generally keeping the place clean and functional. I used to go to 24 hour in Hollywood, and I always felt like I should get a penicillin shot afterwards. I literally listened to a guy talk about his staph infection IN THE SAUNA. And the bros. Oh boy. It's hard enough to get comfortable going to a gym without a bunch of performative insecurity on display. I've read these "I joined on an impulse but then I decided I wanted my money back" posts and imagine that has to be a non-stop thing at a gym, but if you really want to just go somewhere to exercise, I can't imagine a better deal. The MAC's not giving your money back, either, by the way. Pros: Cheap. Clean. Well equipped. Pleasant vibe. 24 hours. Did I mention cheap? Cons: I could use fewer TVs, honestly. Gotta complain about something, I guess. There's no pool, sauna, tennis courts, whatever. Not cons so much as just true if that's what you want.

It's disappointing to see this framed as a financial favor. The "free months" referenced were…read moreactually credits for periods that had already been paid for but during which services were not provided as advertised. These were not gifts; they were adjustments for time the facility was closed or unavailable. In addition, I had posted funds to my account for future months and was never told they needed to be manually applied. I was later publicly criticized for not doing so, despite never being given that information. I was also concerned when the owner attempted to publicly share my personal information on another platform. That content was removed after a cease-and-desist was issued. Consumer protection laws address situations where customers are charged for services not rendered, which is why those credits existed in the first place. Rather than addressing concerns, the owner chose to personally criticize a former member for leaving an honest review. That approach reinforces many of the issues other reviewers have already described, and it has the effect of drawing more attention to those reviews. Situations like this make it difficult to feel comfortable as a member or to resolve concerns in good faith. I hope the business chooses to focus on improving the member experience rather than attacking customers who share their experiences.

I have had a great time with all the instructors at Fulcrum. They hit the sweet spot between encouraging and over the top cheerleading. They all know their stuff and give good corrections. The workouts are varied in format, music, and focus so I didn't get bored. I had a serious injury and they modified exercises for me while I progressed back to full weight bearing and impact. The instructors I regularly look for are Jai, Freddy, Cheryl, and Dakayla. I loved Rodney but he moved. Space: The gym looks like a gym, not a health spa. I like this. It is clean and well maintained. There is an outdoor platform and a garage door which has been great for COVID necessary ventilation. COVID: They took it seriously [sanitation, masking, ventilation] and even let me know when I may have been exposed [pre-vaccine era]. Payment: I had a few hiccups with injuries and life changes and they were gracious about suspending my membership until I could return. Women: There are tons of badass women who work out here. Classes are dominated by women. Cons: I cannot really think of any. For first time boot camp/weight lifters, I would recommend doing their health assessment/intro interview. They will show you some moves there. Don't be intimidated by the acronyms or moves - everyone can do them and pros will give you good individual attention if you need it.

I really liked this gym, which is why it's especially disappointing that I ultimately decided to…read moreleave. One of the main reasons I chose an all-women's gym was the sense of privacy, exclusivity, and safety that comes with knowing the space is specifically designed for women. Recently, the gym hired a male massage therapist, and the massage room is located within the same area as the gym. For me, that fundamentally changed the environment. It defeats much of the purpose of paying the premium price for an all-women's facility if men are now regularly present in areas where women are working out and receiving services. The gym has also opened a café that leads directly into the gym. Since the café is open to the public, it has brought people into the space who otherwise would not have access to the gym. I've noticed men lingering around the café, which made me increasingly uncomfortable. Unfortunately, the coffee hasn't exactly been good enough to make that tradeoff worthwhile. At this point, I have to question whether the owner is more interested in taking women's money than protecting women's safety and preserving the environment that made this gym worth the premium membership price in the first place. That may not be the owner's intention, but that is unfortunately how these changes have made me feel as a member. I understand that a business can evolve and expand its offerings, but if the gym is moving toward a more co-ed experience, I think that should be communicated transparently. The value proposition of an all-women's gym is very different from that of a traditional gym. If the exclusivity and privacy are being diluted, members deserve to know that before paying the premium price. I really enjoyed working with the trainers here, and I would still recommend connecting with some of the personal trainers if you can find a way to work with them independently. There are genuinely great people here. Ultimately, I left because the gym no longer felt like the all-women's space I originally signed up for. I hope the owner seriously considers whether these changes are consistent with the reason women chose this gym in the first place. I also anticipate that the owner's response to this review may emphasize the gym's commitment to women's safety and explain why these changes are supposedly consistent with that mission. I would encourage prospective and current members to look beyond the polished response and consider the actual changes taking place. For me, the issue is not what the stated mission is; it is whether the experience and policies in practice continue to reflect that mission. Unfortunately, my experience has led me to conclude that they no longer do.

To enter this gym you must walk through a boutique/coffee shop. I don't want to have to walk…read morethrough trinkets and clothing while smelling coffee to get to the gym. The gym itself is in what feels like a basement. It is small and cramped. There were only three of us in there at the time but I couldn't imagine it on a busy day. I signed up for a free week trial membership. Which is a lovely perk to offer potential new clients. Upon arriving I was given a tour by the person at the front desk. She made sure that before she took me downstairs she found someone to cover her at the front desk. About half way through the tour a woman, I'm assuming manager, came over to us holding a laundry basket. Before saying hi or introducing herself she basically scolded the woman giving me the tour saying "who is watching the front desk if you're down here? I'll finish the tour and you can go back upstairs". At that point this manager woman put on a big fake smile and introduced herself to me and then finished the tour. This interaction alone immediately told me this was not the gym for me. It may be a women's only gym but it didn't provide the feeling of women supporting women. The gym itself is honestly, depressing. No windows. No softness. It's a basement with workout equipment. I chose not to return for remainder of the free trial and certainly wouldn't spend $75 a month to go there.
