Deeply sad situation. They've had leadership crisis for years, constant turnover of the Board of directors, with the exception of one or two men. While this has been going on, there's been some good staff and membership. the administrative side has no clue about this. Not a healthy organization. read more

There is some good people here and I root for this place to succeed. The membership itself is good folks from the area. BUT, the admin fail completely unfortunately. There is a strange organizational culture here that is beyond dysfunctional. Staff and Admin turns over frequently. Members of the staff share gossip and complaints about the Administrators. There's a new Director every year it seems. Most alarmingly, there is an odd attitude towards those of us who don't fit in to their desired clientele, if you get me. We have a diverse family and we were made to feel unwelcome by several members of the staff named Karen. The class signup system is difficult and unnecessarily exludes people from the classes. There is little institutional awareness of disabilities and inclusion. read more

I paid mothly for playing basketball in gym everyday but in Decenber 2019, January 2020 and February 2020 they have kids basketball practice and league almost every at 4.15 to 7.15 and told all peoples to get out because they are going to practice but if they going to pracetice then why did I pay for the membership these months if I did not get to play? If you're going to say that I can play in ohter time or weekend, No, I have school and I did not just pay for the weekend, I paid for everyday in the month. read more

This experience was horrible aside from the instructor being friendly. The facility was very old and not up to standards of cleanliness. The floor felt like slime and the hot room was unbearable. The floor felt like slime, there was rust in the pool area and the pictures online were absolutely edited or from somewhere else. When I politely explained this wouldn't work for us I was met with rudeness, attitude and no accommodation from the "manager" working today at 3pm My son did not feel comfortable alone and because it was completely up to him to keep himself from falling in his very first lesson, while the teacher was 4 children away I had to sit on the side of the pool the whole time because it did not seem safe. The condition of this building and pool is absolutely repulsive and the "manager" working Tuesday at 3pm is not any better. Spare your children and yourself and NEVER come here. read more

I've been a member since 2011 and have absolutely loved it. They keep the building well maintained and the entire staff is passionate and friendly. We popped in on a Sunday to ask some questions and get a look around. The place was *sparkling* clean, which I was the most impressed about. My partner and I wanted to evoke members somewhere we could work out but also swim. This building is old but it looks like they used every bit of it in a smart way. NE Community Center is a fab place for kids, families, and folks who are free during the day. They have an extensive line up of classes including Tai Chi, yoga, pickleball, water workout, ballet for kids and adults, and more! It was an old YMCA so it's kind of a labyrinth with stairs and different levels. I don't think there is a elevator. It can get crowded because there is SO MUCH going on! The pool is small but it's salt water which i LOVE. There is time set aside for lap swimming, but it's more of a leisure pool. There are 2 weight rooms, and a separate area for TRX/floor work complete with heavy bag, medicine balls, etc. There's men's/women's and family locker rooms that are spacious and have a sauna. There's also a huge gym area for basketball with an old school 'track' around the second floor. When I first started coming here, I could not find room to do ANYTHING - because parents wait for their kids to finish classes, they hang out in the cardio room, or around the track, or in the hallways. Once I figured out the best time to show up, and found the downstairs weight room, it's been great. The staff is always friendly! read more

A H'wood district mainstay since its original configuration as the NE YMCA, the NECC is a true community center in that for good, for bad, or for ugly, these really are the people in my neighborhood. And for the most part, it's good! In addition to the yoga classes, swim sessions, Bollywood workouts (and brother, you haven't lived until you've seen a score of elderly ladies rocking to the latest Bollywood moves) and typical health club activities, the place is a meeting point for community members. I know that there's a percentage of members who just come everyday to hang out in the lobby and catch up, shoot the breeze, read the paper and share homemade cookies. Terrific mix of young and old folks -something you don't hardly see at all in Portland- the NECC does a lot of nonathletic events as well: Halloween carnival, annual Mother's day plant sale, fireworks stand-cum-fundraising booth etc. It's great fun. The equipment, as noted, is a bit rundown in some cases, but I've never found the staff (especially the child care folks) to be anything less than enthusiastic and helpful. Plus, there's a marked lack of Ed Hardy wearing slash Tapout T-shirt douchebags pumping iron and making roid-rage faces, so that's a big plus right there. read more

This place is a conundrum, but I keep coming back because it is 2 blocks from home and cheap if you meet the requirements for a scholarship. There are only 2 yoga classes that I have tried and liked. The rest of the classes have a more aerobics feel to them as proper stretching techniques are not done as part of the class warm up. The classes I do like are constantly overflowing, and despite 2 years of requesting more of such classes the company line has been "no time, space or money". Constantly being bumped out of a 120% full class was making me loathe my physical maintenance, so currently I utilize the facility exclusively for cardio/sauna. As a non-profit, most of the equipment is donated. Some quite old, and I would call a few of the third floor bikes/treadmills borderline dangerous. As long as my favorite elliptical on the third floor is available, I am a happy man! There are certain shortages of equipment. Ellipticals among them. The NECC has signs on such shortages instructing you to only use for 20 or 30 minutes. The locker room being carpeted, in a basement, adjacent to pools and showers stays pretty musty, but overall, the place is kept clean. The sauna rocks and is my favorite thing about the NECC. I have not tried the pool, but understand there are group classes, open swim and it is inside! The desk-staff people are a mixed bag. Some very friendly and out going, some generally unpleasant. Rated 2 stars .. I see 3 stars as AVERAGE and for reasons above, this place is below average. My wife still tries to go to yoga there so as long as she keeps our membership active I will keep dealing with it as we have no funds for 2 separate gyms. If it were up to me (it isn't) I would go the Costco/24 Hour Fitness/ adult 2-year membership for $300 ($12.46/mo). read more

I moved into the Hollywood district and needed a gym. This is the one I decided on. It's an old facility, so it's going to have some character and outdated things, but I've had an extremely positive time as a member. It has a pool with a deep end. The pool is also heated in a way that it feels prefect in almost any temperature. The sauna is pretty nice, although they should clean it a bit more. It has pretty much has every weight/ cardio equipment you need to stay in shape. We are not talking anything state of the art by any means. I like how they divide things up in different rooms (core, weights, circuit, yoga, cardio). Many times you have the whole room to yourself. I started personal training there, and it has totally changed my body and fitness level after about 6 months. The training i receive is top notch. I can't guarantee all of them, but Patrick is solid. It's a little pricey for single members. I wish they would drop their rates. Hollywood fitness was my other option. The one in hollywood is like a barn full of hamsters with personal trainers soliciting you at every opportunity. I can't exercise in a place that crowded or chaotic. I'd say if you are looking for a great facility, don't want to fight the crowds, and be part of the community, this place is for you. read more

I took swimming classes here when I was a kid when it was the old YMCA. Going back after many years and seeing the fish above the swimming pool was definitely nostalgic! NECC is a non profit and a tad more expensive than a larger gym, but what I love is the community feeling. You get to know the people there and it's very welcoming. They have different fundraisers and I try to help out when I have time as I hope this place continues to succeed! The machines are a tad older but they are maintained and the rooms are clean. I've participated in a range of classes and have always enjoyed them all and the instructors make it an enjoyable workout. The yoga class with Allison is AMAZING! Any time I've been there and had a sore spot I always come out for the better and appreciating that quiet time! The Aqua Zumba class is also a must go! There is a good range of ages, classes and people, definitely a good place to get some exercise and peace of mind. read more

They have a big option of classes to take (Yoga, fitness, zumba) which is good. The price: you can pay less or the same and go to other gym. (70ish$/month) and here you are on your own, if theres a question or something happens to you, like a little injury, theres no one to ask... in other gyms they have people going around. They have classes for kids which is good and its a good deal if you have kids. No initiation fee The machines, some are old but well maintained and clean. You have a weight lifting room with the workouts you can do (first time I have seen something like this, very nice) because thats pretty helpfull when you are trying to do new routines and you runout of ideas. The pool has a guy watching for your safety. But only 3 lanes. Decent showers and locker rooms. The attention not that great, I went a couple of times. Thats why Im giving 3 stars read more

The building is old and in spite of being an older building is well kept up. The staff is very nice. The issue is it does not have ADA access to the building. The stairs entering the building from the sidewalk are not made for a person with a walking disability. There is no other entrance.They are cement stairs and their is a handrail. The problem is they are steep and in my case I use a cane and it very awkward and difficult to climb the stairs. This limits who can go to this gym. Any one with a walker, electric chair, scooter, or any kind of walking disability (such as a stroke) would not be able to safely enter the building. read more

i walk in and think that is has character, not a bad thing to me, but some of the equipment is in a sad need of repair (perhaps they should ask a local business to donate repair work?) to the point that a couple of the bikes are just unsafe. I have admittedly only gone a few times but that is due purely to the price! It is actually no cheaper than going to 24 hour fitness and the classes here are always too full. I tend to trek all the way to the east portland community center simply because it is half the price and you can actually enter the classes. I have been looking at local fitness options and i am sad to say i just can't afford going to this community center. I really don't understand why it is twice the price as the other and still not have classes that you can actually do. good luck but that is not what i remember a community center to be from my youth read more

I am so grateful to have found NECC! I was looking for a gym with childcare, and this was one of the most affordable once you factor in childcare (included with membership). I love the community center feel, the variety of classes, the quirky old building (but still with all the equipment you need at a gym), the super friendly staff and members, and the awesome childcare center. I enjoy the variety of classes and the friendly members and staff. I have had memberships at many health clubs but this is the only place that manages to make me happy about coming to work out. I've stayed in good shape taking cardio, strength training, yoga and Zumba. The facility is not fancy but hey- what's important is whether I enjoy coming and getting fit. read more

The NECC center is in the heart of Portland's Hollywood district. I have been an active member and lap swimmer for three years. I have enjoyed the staff, the sense of community, even the old historic building with its small 20-yard pool. Why the middlin' rating? On weekends, the pool is often not available when the schedule says it should be; either the lifeguard has overslept, the chlorine levels are not right, or someone's taken an off-time coffee break.These are only the excuses I can remember; it happens often. This morning, half hour after the center should have been open, the doors were still locked. Twenty or thirty of us stood shivering in the cold rain until finally, I gave up and returned home. The NECC is a wonderful place. But I am seriously considering taking out a membership somewhere else. read more

I will soon be a returning member of NECC, and looking forward to it. I originally started going there in 2006. My son told me about it, as someone from the CC came and talked in his business class at school. It was shortly after it had re opened in '05. I joined mainly for the pool, but was active with many other courses they offered and the weight room. I am an avid swimmer and I love the water. After 3 years there, they decided the pool needed to be cleaned and drained. No problem...When it was all completed, I got back into the pool and after a few times, noticed I was breaking out. I inquired about the chemicals in the pool and was assured the readings were the same if not better than before the "remodel". So, I checked out Dishman pool to see if I broke out. I did..self diagnosis.. I all of a sudden was breaking out to chlorine. CRAZY...... but noticed it would happen too if I traveled and got into a hotel pool. I was encouraged to try salt water pools.. LA Fitness was the only one with that around, so I quit NECC and joined LA.... after a few times in that pool, I realized I was still breaking out. Found out that they HAVE to put a little bit of chlorine in the water to help kill the germs... OK, so now what? My next step was an interest in Cross Fit. I ended up joining that and loved it. I did Cross Fit for 3.5 years....This past April, I injured my knee .... I cannot completely say it was Cross fit. I injured it after a two day bowling tournament, Cross fit, and trying to bowl league ... all in a 4 day period. Ended up with a torn meniscus. Long story short, as much as I would like to go back to Cross Fit, I am choosing to go back to NECC as many Dr. / Therapist are suggesting pool exercise for my rehab. When I went to check into this a couple months ago (August) I was told the pool was being shut down AGAIN and a total remodel / cleaning was being done. WOW... really... OK so I am under the impression that is all done now, and I have been in contact with my friends that I have met there years ago (that was the nice part about NECC, the people) and told her I was coming back. She is excited. I am excited to see if I can get in the pool and NOT break out....lol. I am going to try a couple daily passes and go to the pool classes that I used to go to and see what happens. Then I will have a decision to make... deal with a mild breakout and treat it as I go along,,,,or go back to Cross Fit, which I LOVE, but did not get the results that I was under the impression I would get. hmmmm.... Life is funny as we get older. Either way, I am excited to get moving one way or another....be with good friends that I have missed for over 3 years... and make new ones. To those who remark about the equipment, you are right. It is old... it is worn. But if it works, use it. I have been around NEW equipment, and you know what.... it breaks down really fast. Consider how many people are using those machines. DAILY!!!! Just because they are in a community center does not mean they are not being taken care of. Trust me, the other gyms I have been in, have bad equipment too, and they don't CARE if it's broke or even help you with it the correct way.... I have seen it all. I love being in the NECC. I have been a member for over twenty years. I swim in the pool, sit in the sauna, take a weight conditioning class, shoot baskets in the gym and taken an occasional yoga/pilates class. But the best part of being a member is all of the members. I've gotten to know them over the years and it has opened up many friendships for me. read more
