Sounds reasonable to me so instead of ordering what I needed on-line, I waited untill after the Holliday and cycled over to Kelly's, the only hardware store that we have left in this town. I walked in and saw that both people stationed at the front of the store to greet and assist customers were both on their phones. I went to look for my item and couldn't find it. I went back to seek help but they were both on their phones. I went back and seared through other isles and departments. Nothing. I went back to the front of the store to ask for help. At Kelly's you are consistently met by a group of men gabbing and slow to help. Most have generally bad attitudes and are even sometimes rude. And if you ever have to return an item you are met with resistance and distain. This attitude has been consistent for years and though people come and go this treatment remains. Worst customer service ever, truly. Been there several times. Most older employees will blatantly ignore you; only two of them are nice. The young employees are pleasant and helpful. Last straw was when the owner refused to make eye contact when I obviously needed help. From now on, I'll make the short drive to Amesbury Industrial Supply. read more

Despite the yelp info that this store is closed, it is OPEN daily for business. Only thing I'd change is have the store employees wear actual masks and let customers swipe cards themselves. Every time I have been there, the same guy (older with graying longish hair) has a bandana around his face that is constantly sliding around and they have to TAKE your debit/credit card and handle it - while constantly touching his face. I was sneered at for using my own pen when they offered my a pen to sign a receipt - just after pulling down a loose bandana and touching their face/mouth. So there's no way to swipe your own card to pay. I'm not going back until pandemic ends. It's a shame as it's a great store. But it's just kinda gross. read more

I went in the store with a project in mind, and wasn't sure how I'd tackle it. The first person I asked at Kelly's had a good idea about the first step, and was humble enough to ask an older staff member for her thoughts. Kelly Hardware is the only Hardware store that is not veteran friendly in way of discount. They have been filling my propane tank every month without inspection of date and does not have a sign of such.Yeserday ,Sunday I went to Kellys to fill my tank, the attendant looked at the date and said that I had to buy a new tank at their higher price than elsewhere and pay $6 to dispose my tank . Seems pretty firecode safe , however they should have sighs and reminders as my tank was becoming expired.also do not swap tanks at non service stations as you could be swapping your good tank for a expired tank of 12 years read more

My husband and I try very hard to patronize local businesses but this is one store that we avoid except in extreme situations. One of the managers or owners treats women - both those who shop there and those who work there - in a very devaluing way. After witnessing this and being humiiliated by him in two consecutive shopping trips, I won's set foot in that store again. If we really want to buy something from a TrueValue Hardware store (sometimes the chain has a great sale or a unique product), we drive down to the TrueValue store in Beverly. read more

I'm so grateful that Kelly's True Value was open yesterday following the Nor'easter, when all of Newburyport's electricity was out. Even though their electricity was also out, they remained open so our community could have access to firewood and other supplies needed following the storm. The store is well-stocked - they really have a huge range of things, and it's very, very rare that I would go there and find that they don't have what I need. The prices are normal. You might be able to drive a longer distance to a superstore staffed with people who don't know anything about most of the things in the store and save a few cents. The staff at Kelly's are super helpful and knowledgeable. If one person knows more about a topic, their coworker will refer them to help you. They have everything for every season, and it's a great store all around! read more

Went on one of my few outings during this pandemic and found that Kelly's has arranged areas for distancing and all employees were wearing masks. I needed 5 items, and, not only was I able to find them with their help, but I got really good advice in the process. Rude, rude rude! I was so disappointed when I went into Kelley's today! I like to avoid the big home-improvement stores because they are overwhelming. I am an older single woman that was asking for some help on something that should be very basic to a hardware store. This place is funny. Either they follow you around like they think you're going to shoplift something, or they totally ignore you. I recently went in for a simple shear bolt for a snowblower. No one would help me. They made me stand there and look up the part number on my smartphone. When I still couldn't find an exact number they basically said I had to bring in the bolt that broke. Unfortunately it flew into a snowbank, so..... rather impossible. They shrug their shoulders and said we can't help you. Not exactly the type of hardware store I will frequent very often. read more

When I worked in Newburyport, Kelly's was my go-to place for everything hardware and houseware (I could spend hours in their Housewares Dept). I now work and live in tax-free NH, but still drive to Kelly's first when I need something. Here's an example of why... This week, in a kitchen catastrophe, my Melitta pour-over coffee carafe AND my 4 cup Pyrex measuring cup were broken. I had bought both at Kelly's decades ago, so I went there. They had neither in stock, but offered to order the Melitta. The Pyrex was another story...their supplier required a minimum of 6 and I sadly agreed they shouldn't. The Melitta arrived exactly on time, so I went today to get it. The gentleman who helped me before remembered me (!) and that I had wanted a Pyrex--he was so happy to tell me a shipment had just arrived. Sure enough, there one was! I am so happy! They carry great quality and their staff is ready and waiting to be of help. I can't ask for more. I'll happily pay MA tax for this kind of quality. read more

Kelly's is the only hardware store I'll go to! They're friendly, professional, knowledgeable and, most importantly, they have everything I've ever asked for (unlike the big store competition!). Kelly's has lost me as a many year regular customer. I recently purchased a defective product from them. Before I discovered it was defective I had discarded the receipt and packaging. Staff at the store refused to allow me to exchange the defective product for a new one (product cost was less than $15). I returned later in the day to speak with the owner. He was not there so I left the defective product with a note explaining the problem and my phone number. The owner did not even give me the courtesy of a call to discuss the situation. This little hardware store has most of what I usually need. The service is good, and the hardware selection is impressive for a small store. I got a garden hose here two years ago, and it still works great. I use it for my outdoor shower in the summer. The prices can be a little steep, otherwise I'd give this store a 5-star. read more

I was visiting Newburyport and bought a new grill cover for my daughter based on my recollection of the grill model and size, not actual measurements. It was too small, and I returned it unopened to exchange it for the correct model. The gentleman who "helped" me treated me like a 15-year-old criminal, as much as accusing me of opening the original box when I hadn't and giving me the third degree about knowing all three dimensions before buying the cover. I'm 60 years old and have owned Weber grills and covers for over 35 years. My only mistake was taking a chance on the size initially, but one would think I had committed a crime the way I was treated. He (the owner??) has apparently been to Sales Prevention School recently and should be kept away from customers until the effects wear off. read more

I find Kelly's True Value to be a great resource in the Newburyport area. For a smaller store they have an incredible inventory. You can't expect them to have the inventory or pricing of a Box store. But unlike a box store you get excellent service, advice and guidance on how to solve your problem. I know you can save money by driving up to the Box stores in NH but when you factor in your time and gas money it is often not worth it. Especially with Beach traffic. It is just not worth it!!! Plus I have found some of their pricing to be the same as the box stores on basic plumbing and common hardware items. Don't always assume the Orange box store is cheaper. They also have excellent monthly specials. In this world where more and more is being controlled by Huge mulit-national corporations with non-local management It is refreshing to support a locally owned small business. Kelly's True Value also is a strong supporter of the Firehouse Center for the Performing arts in Newburyport. Would any Box Store or multi national corporation do that? It is worth paying another dollar or three per visit for what you actually get in return. read more

The environment at Kelly's True Value has always seemed unfriendly - having shopped there from time-to-time over 30 years. Making returns seems to always require a senior member of the staff to sign approval. The straw that broke the back, however, about 4 months ago was when I tried to pay for something using a 50 cent roll of pennies the cashier told me that it was store policy that they had to count the pennies - which the cashier did (and there were 50 pennies). Unbelievable. Must be fear that if the cashier ended up even 1 penny short at the end of the day the cashier would be admonished. Why else would such a policy exist? The people there seem knowledgable, but there don't seem to be a lot of smiles or happy faces. I will no longer shop at Kelly's. read more

When ever I need something from a hardware store, I just walk in here and immediately someone greets me and I just ask for what I need and they take me right to it. I get into some kooky projects and they are always willing to work with me on figuring out solutions to my problems. If I stump the first person I talk to they are willing to pass me off to someone who might have more knowledge in the area I'm working in. Very friendly and helpful, unlike the box stores where the price might be a few pennies less but you can never find anyone to help you. read more

Kelly's is a good alternative to the larger hardware stores if you're a local to the Newburyport area. Of course you end up paying more here than you would for the same thing in the larger stores, but it can be convenient and get you out of a bind if you're working on a project. They do offer some good monthly deals on occasion that can be a better deal than the larger stores offer. Customer service here is what often makes shopping difficult for myself and others. Although the team of sales representatives are generally very helpful in answering your questions and helping you find what you need, a select few of the associates do not like you wandering around the store unsupervised by them. They will often have a tendency to tail and watch customers as if they suspect each customer's intention is to shoplift. The select few associates that do this need to cease if they expect customers to want to patronize them. 3 stars for now until the issue with the sales associates is amended by management. read more
