Office: Good parking, but the plaza is pretty old and smelly. The office itself is small and tight, but there is seating in the outside courtyard. There are 3 simple patient rooms and a bathroom that is pretty clean. This space needs an upgrade, but that is on the plaza owners. Appointments: Always on time. Waiting is about 10 minutes or less. Being seen is less than 5 minutes, but so thorough, straight to the point and informative. Doc listens and answers all questions. Front desk and assistants are very quick and straight forward with instructions and appointment set ups. I appreciate the efficiency of everything from the whole team. It helps planning my day after the appointment very easy. Doctor: Miyata is very experienced, skilled, professional, talented, caring. He went into the right profession. He gives the best advice for his clients. He makes sure he has an assistant with him at every appointment to keep everyone accountable. He is always on top of his appointments and does his best to give the smallest incision possible for better healing. Surgery experience: From start to finish, it was wonderful. I have done 2 in office and 1 with anesthesia. Doc explains everything in details, every step of what he is doing. During the surgery, you feel no pain. Although I found Dr.Miyata to be very short and to the point at first, I was later very appreciative of his directness and quick appointments (in and out 20mins or less each visit). Surgery went very well with no complications and stayed in time frame anticipated. Incisions are minimal and will hopefully fully heal to almost nothing. Recovery was very smooth. read more

At first I was apprehensive about getting my gallbladder removed. I had the surgery done and of course the first 3 days were so very painful but as time went on the pain subsided and two weeks later I'm much better. My incisions didn't even need to be stapled so the adhesive "stitches" are healing very well. He is a knowledgeable doctor and you should not hesitate to have your procedures done with him. read more

I happen to know Dr Miyata on a personal as well as a professional level. His top priority is his patient's health and well being. He has operated on many, many people and saved lives as well as improving quality of life. I have seen him interact with his patients many times. He also is a very kind person. I know during his time at Mercy he was a top surgeon and when he had to stand up for ethics and patient safety, he did not have support he needed. On a personal level, he helped me buy my home at a financial loss for himself. If I need surgery, he is the first person I will call and that's a fact! I had great experiences with all of my visits and surgery. The staff was prompt and courteous. They were well organized and kept things moving without rushing me or others. Dr. Miyata took time to ensure that I understood the examination, and recommendations for surgery, and let me decide how to proceed once I had all the information. My surgery went extremely well, thanks to some advanced local anesthetic that helped with pain management. I never had pain above a level 3 (on my scale). Dr. Miyata performed hernia surgery on my husband at University Surgery Center just a few days before Christmas (Dec. 2016). I delayed my review to give my husband time to heal and see if there were any problems several months out. Happy to report that there have been no issues. While I can understand why others have commented on Dr. Miyata's bedside manner, I don't feel that his personality takes away from his complete ability to perform surgeries competently, professionally and with positive outcomes. Dr. Miyata is straight forward, blunt and to the point. I can see how this is off-putting to some and comes across as rude. Do I feel he should work on his bedside manner and show some warmth and compassion to his patients, who may be very nervous and scared about an impending surgery? Absolutely, I do. But that's not who he is. It is, perhaps, something he can work on should he choose to and I feel this would only benefit his professional career and make him an even better surgeon. Although, Dr. Miyata isn't going to win any personality or compassion awards...he does appear to be a skilled surgeon. I will say this. During my husband's appointment, Dr. Miyata answered all of our questions, explained, in great detail, what he was going to do during surgery, limitations during recovery and went over risk factors. We also didn't feel rushed...Dr. Miyata didn't rush through our appointment like many other doctors do. The day of surgery he came out and talked with me and explained that my husband actually had two hernias, what to expect over the next couple of weeks and answered my questions. During the post-op appointment, he again answered our questions and further explained what to expect, limitations and healing timelines and risk factors for getting another hernia. Also, since we had already met our health insurance max out-of-pocket amount for the year and it would really save us quite a bit of money...and my husband was in quite a bit of pain from the hernia...we asked Dr. Miyata if it was possible for him to squeeze my husband's surgery in before the end of the year...which was only two weeks away. Dr. Miyata said he couldn't promise anything but he would try and also have his staff see if University Surgery Center could accommodate our request as well. Well, it all worked out. Dr. Miyata's office staff really came through and got it scheduled...which I know wasn't an easy task so close to Christmas. All in all, our experience with Dr. Miyata and his staff was a positive one. I feel that, while he may not express much compassion and warmth, he didn't have to squeeze my husband in. That tells us he listened and understood the pain my husband was in and our financial situation. That's a big plus and actually does show he cared. We feel we can recommend Dr. Miyata with confidence. read more

Lousy bedside manner, arrogant and doesnt care what a patient wants, doesnt care what the parent thinks, bullies nurses. My 19 year old stepson went in with gut cramps and this dr wouldnt give us a CT because he feared we didnt have insurance (we were caught up in CoveredCa garbage after we got the boot from our plan that terminated on Dec 31) so he said all that CT would do was run up the bills and he said it was appendicitis and wanted to jump right in and take it out. Well, when you want confirmation that the appendix is the problem, you arent worried about bills and when you KNOW you will have insurance you arent worried about it. Well, I know my kid, I know that if we didnt get confirmation that it WAS appendicitis, he'd let them take it out then he'd complain all month or longer that it wasnt that and it was something else. Surely, thats what the kid did. I fought all day for the CT, every nurse was afraid to undermine Dr's authority because they said he was nasty and rude. Indeed he was nasty and rude. We even tried to take part in deciding what pain medications to use, no way was Dr Miyata going to have that. He insisted we use Dilaudid. Well, that stuff causes BAD gut cramps. We didnt want more gut pain. And the withdrawal from it was HORRIBLE. He even tried to dope him up on it before the kid even HAD any real pain. The kid was breathing perfectly yet he TOLD the doc he was feeling pain at an 8 or 9... nope at an 8 or 9 you are huffing, puffing, sweating... the kid was fine and Doc said, "I dont understand what your problem with pain medication is". I said, "Have you ever heard the side effects of narcotics? Up to and including death? I would at least like to talk about this." But no, he just had a real arrogant attitude. I am a mom who likes to feel like my concerns and feelings are valued and that I am part of the decisions. Not that way with this fella. So, after surgery, my stepson had terrible pain for about 3 weeks, bled from his intestines and out his rectum, had 3 trips to the ER. We didnt want to go back to this surgeon but we had to. He was very rude and didnt want to even tell us that he left clips in our kids body after the surgery. Apparently this is common but we had no idea until we had a CT done. So, it was possible he was having a reaction to the staples. We asked the surgeon what the clips are made out of, he had no idea. He just knew some type of metal. Not even the polymetric kind that are less likely to irritate. This, again, is to keep costs down. Ugh. So it was a long, dragged out miserable battle. It didnt have to be. All the way through we had to wonder if the appendix was even the cause to begin with since the pain dragged out way beyond the span of time an appendectomy would have caused. Could have been a bad case of colitis or something. We had no CT so we had no idea if he really had Appendicitis. Bottom line, just get the confirmation that you're going under the knife for good cause. Then other questions down the road wont even come up. read more

I appreciate the time Dr. Miyata took to see me and explain my symptoms, as well as the tests I needed to have completed to better assess my condition. After a few days of throwing up and a visit to urgent care where they suspected I was having an issue with my gallbladder, I went to Dr. Miyata's office where he quickly ordered a CT scan. I'm not sure where the other reviewer is coming from - my experience was great. The office staff was extremely helpful, Dr. Miyata calmed me down as we discussed surgical options and the tests needed to confirm my issue. While I didn't end up needing surgery after all, I felt well taken care of - he really cared about my health and well-being. I'd be happy to go to him again. read more

My mother needed to see him for a surgery & he didn't bother to even exam her in the proper way & he completely seemed irritated. This first doctors visit was the first & LAST with this asshole! Dr.Miyata was a very great and helpful doctor. We had no problems with him at all. Unlike Doctor Robsinson who didn't want to even go to attend to my mom when the hospital called for him to be on my moms case. Doctor Miyata came in to the room about 2 the morning they put her in a room. He explained what my mom had thoroughly and answered any and every question we had. He fought to get my mom into the OR as quickly as he could. He also tried to bump non emergency cases but mercy hospital didn't let him and or because doctor Robinson didn't wanna stay late. His bedside manner was great, he was there every morning asking questions and if we had any questions. He gave us great information on her condition Diverticulitis. He went out of his way and printed any information that would help us understand how it happens and how to prevent it. The second time my mom went into the hospital for a twisted intestine, WHICH IS NORMAL DO TO THE SCAR TISSUE FROM PREVIOUS SURGERY. He was not the on call surgeon but when we had specifically asked for him, he was gracious enough to come back to us. He is a great informative doctor, who you can count on. He is very knowledgeable and funny. He always tried to make things happier by making us laugh when we were worried. I highly recommend Dr. Miyata, he really is a great doctor who will fight for his patients and inform you about everything you need to know. He knows the Hospital is not where you wanna be and he tries the best he can to heal you up as quickly as possible so you may go home quicker. He is a pusher, but if you wanna go home quickly listen to him when he tells you to walk! It truly helps. I am writing this in regards to the review for Dr. Miyata that this other reviewer had about her son. I am absolutely appalled by your comments about this doctor. First of all, what did his primary care physician say? Did he send him to Dr. Miyata first? And if so, why? Your son should first have been sent to a gastrointestinal doctor before anything else. If his primary care physician did not then that is where the blame lies. Dr. Miyata is a general surgeon. He had to have ordered a CT scan before proceeding with anything. Knowing this hospital like everyone else does i'm sure it was a major oversight on the staffs part and not the doctors. Apparently you do not have a lot of experience with Mercy Medical Center. If you think that he bullies the nurses that is probably due to the fact they have to be in order for them to do anything. Mercy Hospital is so low staffed that all of the nurses have issues for which I can not blame them but it's not about the doctor. When my mom was recently in the hospital I bathed her although they said they would. I received numerous phone calls from my mom in which I had to call the nurses station to tell them to answer my moms call button. Then they would go into moms room and ask her why she called me. Her answer to them was that she was calling but nobody came. These nurses have to practically be yelled out to get them to do anything. As for the insurance goes, Dr. Miyata doesn't care about that. He takes payments! He treated and is still treating my mother with grace and dignity and he saved her life. Two years ago he put a port in mom for her blood transfusions and the surgery went perfectly. The next day she ended up in the ER and we almost lost her. She had sepsis which the ER docs said was from her port. NOT!! She had a problem surrounding her gallbladder and Dr.Miyata was the one that caught it. He removed it and she got better and was sent home 2 days later. That one, unfortunately developed a spot of dried blood right in the middle and it had to be removed which Dr. Miyata did and again the procedure was perfect. He put a new one in a couple of weeks ago on the other side and that surgery also was perfect. Unfortunately for mom she ended up in the hospital due to a minor stroke about 4 days later. The ER was getting ready to release her but then she went into AFib. Had nothing to do with her port although that's what they said it probably was. Don't ever believe what this ER tells you. Those doctors are residents. In other words they are practicing and YOU or your loved one is the one they are practicing on. I had to call Dr. Miyata to make them use her port in which he did but they NEVER listened. You as a parent or in my case a caregiver to my mom have to be their voice and yes sometimes your voice has to be raised. No offense to you but had your son been or is addicted to drugs/pain killers? That is why he didn't quite understand why your son would have that kind of a reaction. Yes, all medications do come with risks. I do understand that you want and have the right to be involved in the decision making or the next step in your sons care. Everything that you had written is blaming Dr. Miyata for everything. If you want to blame someone then blame the idiot that did NOT send him immediately to a gastrointestinal physician. Again, that is where the blame lies. If I were to choose any surgeon for anyone in my family it would without a doubt be Dr. Miyata. He is caring, kind, knows his stuff inside and out and I would and do trust him with my moms life. She will soon be 80, Thanksgiving day, and he is and has gone out of his way to make sure she is comfortable in every way possible. There are few doctors that I have ever come across that I would put my life in their hands. Dr. Miyata is the one that I would want for sure if I needed an EXCELLENT surgeon. Fantastic surgeon! About 18 months ago my husband needed his gall bladder removed. My husband had heard all kinds of stories as what was expected after it was removed, Dr. Miyata calmly said everything will be the same as before. He was right! Hubby is free of pain and is beyond happy he'll never have another gall bladder attack! Dr. Miyata is a great doctor. He consulted my father-in-law after his visit to the emergency room. He was very knowledgeable, took the time to examine and go over all possible diagnoses with him. Although he did not require surgery, he monitored him closely, reviewed his ct and discussed it with us. He personally called to check on him a few times after the consult to make sure he was improving. In my experience it is a nurse or office staff that calls after a procedure but he made sure to follow up personally. We felt very well cared. Dr. Miyata is above and beyond the best surgeon I have ever met. He took amazing care of my Aunt who was so nervous about having her gallbladder removed. As a fellow physician I truly admire his beside manner and his patience. He breaks the typical surgeon stereotype and went out of his way to make sure my aunt knew exactly what to expect the day of surgery and in the weeks following, normally the preoperative visit is less than 5 minutes and you're out the door, not with Dr. Miyata! He did a laparoscopic procedure and three months later you can't even see the scars. I first met Dr. Miyata 3 years ago, when i needed an emergency surgery. Dr. Miyata was brought in to consult on a hernia repair. When Dr. Miyata examined me, he was pretty sure it was something else and, it was. The surgery saved my life.He came in and was very informative and friendly. I am very hesitant writing reviews on anything or anyone i am not completely 100% satisfied with the service I've received and i would, without hesitation refer my friends and family to see Dr. Miyata. He is one of the most compassionate doctors I've ever met, not once was i left feeling like he didn't care or wasn't concerned about my problems. I am, and have been his patient for almost a year and have had two separate surgeries preformed by Dr. Miyata. Each one (although stressful) i went in feeling reassured knowing i had a doctor with a real compassion for people by my side. Dr. Miyata was very kind and respectful, his staff was always kind to me and had a smile on there faces while multitasking. I went in with a severe anal fissure tear that I thought was a hemroid. I tried for 5 weeks every at home treatment you can think of for hemroids and I was at my breaking point, the pain was unbearable. My first visit he new exactly what was wrong just with my explanation of the excruciating pain and discomfort, he prescribed me medication and I instantly felt a difference. He gave me very good instructions on how to better my diet and add fiber to help make my stool soft to help heal the tear along with the Nitroglycerine medication. He followed up with me 3 weeks in a row to make sure my healing was continuing to improve and it is still doing so. Very professional, very helpful, very clean environment, staff was always polite, and I never waited longer than 5 minutes to be called back and never waited more than 5 minutes in the room to be seen.
