Big Phil and Iris waiting for breakfast

It was a peculiar stop in - because after dinner - surf and turf with my former boss from the law firm - always treating me right - we sat in the den and watched a few innings of the Mets getting killed by some team or another while drinking fine red wine. So I kinda lost track of time and driving things and I had six and a half hours ahead of me - totally forgetting to calculate for sleep because I gotta be bright eyed and bushy tailed at the farm at 5:30SM the very next day. This all hit me at once - I was having such a good time and now it's over and I must go - it's 7:30PM - no time for coffee now, let's hit the road and crank out some miles. And this charge of emergency faded in forty five minutes - I had a NOS citrus energy drink which didn't raise an eyelid - and they were growing heavier. I stopped somewhere in Massachusetts to rest, perhaps get a room and take Monday off - it sounded so delicious but with two large breeds, everyone's telling me that "there's no room at the inn" and I'm losing hope to rest, I'm losing hope to reach my destination on time - and just then I see a giant moose. He's tall brand shiny and I saw a real one about three weeks ago in the lettuce and fennel. This young lad was just about over seven feet tall antlers the width of my garage and wasn't looking amused by the electric fence - then he looked at me. I took my fighting position and prepared to get the horns - nowhere to run, I'm going down throwing everything I got - even with a moose - he just snorted at me and off he went into the brush. This moose was less active so I pet his chest as Philip and Iris were waiting in the doggie rest area. Inside nothing was open - not ever Starbucks - then I spotted movement behind the Burger King counter and approached. They had hot coffee! Thank the Lord and I pounded it leaving second degree internal burns but it was well worth the skin damage because I got to work on time, worked my full shift - with no sleep - at my advanced age - and all thanks to this rest stop.

Potty break. It's a service plaza. There is food, toilets and gas to fill your car. There isn't much else to say on that. We opted not to eat there as we were looking for something other than fast food or coffee.

I mean, is any service plaza gonna be five stars? Ehhhh. Generally I tried to avoid them, but I know it can be a long drive up the length of the state of Maine (staying on 95, Kittery to Houlton is nearly 300 miles after all). This is as good a spot as any to stretch your legs, take a bio break, grab a snack (according to their website: the Burger King and Z-Market are open 24 hours, the Starbucks is only available some days at sometimes), but most importantly: see a moose. If you're visiting Maine and desperately need to see a moose, there's a life-sized statue of one here!

I spent way too much time here, but I was on a 45 minute conference call via Skype. Thankfully, the free wifi signal reached to the parking lot so I could sit in the car and be comfortable. Parking lot was clean, bathrooms could use some adjustments. Popeye's, Burger King and Starbucks and some I've never heard of. Do take a picture with the moose out front. Clean bathrooms. At least half a dozen food options. Plenty of parking. Easy on/off the highway. Adorable moose to greet you at the entrance. Seasonal lobster roll food truck in the parking lot. Could have better signage for the parking lot.

Clean pit stop with lots of parking. Restaurants close fairly early. At 5:00 pm Starbucks, Burger King and others were buttoned down. They did have a few vending machines to get drinks from.

Standard service Plaza Clean restrooms. Fast food dining options. Coffee. Souvenirs. Good gas prices. What sets this apart is Live Lobsters for sale!

Stopped in at the Kennebunk Service Plaza (Northbound) on the Northbound journey up the Maine Turnpike (Interstate 95) from Dover, NH to Portland, ME. Everything you need is here: restrooms, convenience store goods, coffee and espresso, food, and gasoline. Men's restrooms were large, clean, and well maintained. Free Wi-Fi is available. Lots of seating. There is a Burger King, Popeyes, Starbucks, Hershey Ice Cream and two convenience store options. Lots of parking outside.

Popeyes, Burger King, Hershey's Ice Cream, Starbucks...and, yeah, live lobstah's!
    Michael M.

Food choices were few, but having Popeyes as one of them made this observation moot. A tank of live 1-1/4 lobsters greets you on the way in. Bathrooms suffered from at least an hour or two of neglect. I've been in many rest stops and the best ones have someone dedicated to keeping the bathrooms tidy. All but two soap dispensers were missing and the entire row of electric hand dryers were mounted just above waist high for an average 5'10" man. It was actually quite comical to see several men hunched over trying to dry their hands. The 8yo boy, however, had no problem doing so. I went a bit harsh on the ratings because cleanliness, particularly at a rest stop, is extremely important as it can get out of hand quick--tonight included. Why the missing soap dispensers?

The outside and inside are designed to resemble a small town. A covered bridge looms overhead by a back entrance. Inside are a few small metal tables and chairs plus a couple 'stand up' to eat tables. Outside is a raised area in front with several metal picnic tables plus two more by outdoor vending machines. Three small parking areas seem to provide just enough space during our lunch time stop. A dog walking area was alongside the highway across from the gas pumps. There are eight pull thru pumps but not really a good stop is you have a long trailer. Cars are parked on the other side of the pumps and a sharp left (u-turn) followed by a right are needed to exit this area from what I can see. I did not see an electric car charge station although there is a air vac machine near the pumps. The inside is absolute chaos. We entered midway in to the building into a maze of free standing displays of things to buy next to tables and chairs. At this entrance, on the left, is a cotton candy making machine where a group was standing watching the fun. A tween was standing between some of the displays blocking traffic. The market is directly to the right. Everyone in the area was trying to find a way around all these obsticles. Loud 70's rock is playing both inside and out which added to the feeling of chaos. You can literally see the stress level go up as people try to navigate the interior. It's probably fine during a less busy time of day. The convenience store 'market' inside includes 'grab & go' foods like premade sandwiches and pizza slices plus sodas, snack foods and souveniers. The aisles are too narrow to pass creating back-ups. The self-serve pizza slice area has no counter to place your box while you get yourself a slice so customers were putting items on top of inventory to free up their hand. Nothing is clearly signed. Half the people were 'just looking' while the other half were trying to find a way around the slow pokes. The only restaurant food here is fast food provided by The Common man. Order and pay at a digital kiosk or stand in line on the right for the cashier. Pick up on the left. They have a seperate bakery/coffee shop and you order for both areas at the kiosks. Food and price are just OK. We received a 'steak bomb' which includes onions & peppers when we ordered a plain steak & cheese which is a different menu item. The brie on my turkey and brie sandwich is cheese sauce, same as used on the steak and cheese. The cold cuts are not quality imho but the honey mustard and bread were good and the lettuce was fresh and plentiful. Everything is packed to eat on site. There are plenty of trash and recycle containers inside and out. Bus your own table/picnic table. Vending machines are available outside in a covered area at the side entrance near the pumps. Handicapped parking is there as well. This entrance is closest to the restrooms. A seperate building near this entrance makes apple cider donuts and smells delicious. The state liquor store is at the opposite end of the building and has it's own entrance.

There are lots of things we appreciate: clean, fresh-smelling rooms, good AC, good blackout curtains, and good water pressure in the shower. But there's more: a very friendly front desk staff who prepare chocolate chip cookies every afternoon, a free hot breakfast, pleasant-enough pool (heated just barely by our standards) and a good fitness room. There are a few things that didn't quite match up for us: the hot breakfast is a bit hit-or-miss depending on your preferences; there are very few places to eat close by; and a trip to Kennebunkport can take 15 minutes with moderate traffic. Bottom line: we like Hampton Inns, and this seems a good one, the positives definitely outweighing the negatives, and it's fairly priced for this area during the summer months.

We were pleasantly surprised with the hospitality here and the amazing service and cheerfulness of the staff. Here is the summary of our 2 day stay at the Hampton Inn. My only regret is that I should have taken more pictures 1) Ambiance 5/5: The place is well maintained with a gym and pool and great rooms. The decor is great and the place looks immaculate. Its also close to some amazing beaches. 2) Service 6/5: I have been to many places in the USA and many other Hamptons as well but this has by far been my best experience mainly due to the amazing staff. Everyone is amazing but 2 people stand out - 'Sag' as she is popularly called - has been the most amazing and happiest person in the hotel that I have ever met. Watch out early morning at breakfast and catch her amazing singing. Along with her, the gentleman who works at the front desk at Night - whose name I am missing, was an amazing help! 3) Food 5/5: The place has one of the most amazing breakfast spreads. Along with this, they even had unlimited cookies available at night for anyone with a late-night sweet craving. There are many things for both vegetarians and non-vegetarians equally. Keep an eye for freshly made scones and pastries at around 8 AM - 8.30 AM 4) Value for Money 5/5: Some people might say this place is costly but for the breakfast buffet, helpful and delightful staff and unlimited cookies, this is a steal :) 5) Amenities: a) Great gym and pool d) Free parking e) Great rooms f) Delightful staff PS: My actual rating is 6/5 for an unforgettable experience. Definitely a must-stay place at an amazing location. Must Visit for: 1) Amazing staff and their singing 2) Great breakfast spread 3) Freshly baked scones and pastries 4) Unlimited cookies at night
