I saw several of my Yelp friends recommend a stop at the Museum and I was all in. I could hardly contain my excitement, seeing the iconic bucket marquee. Outside, in the perfectly manicured lot, stand petroleum artifacts from the Sanders early days as a gas station owner. A historical plaque describes the site. The Museum stands where Harland Sanders (the Colonel) once owned a small neighborhood restaurant, called Sanders. Here, his famous fried chicken took root. Inside, is a modern KFC counter. I be placed my order and was given a beeper. The Museum is filled with artifacts from 1940's to present including Sanders furniture, kitchen ware and an evolution of KFC logo packaging and trinkets. My favorite part of the exhibit was a video of Sanders describing how to prepare his chicken. I was truly inspired by his story as an entrepreneur. My lunch was fresher than any KFC that I had ever had. The chicken was crispy and flavorful. The coleslaw was so brightly colored that I knew it was made within the hour. And the potatoes took me back to my childhood. We spent about an hour total at the museum. There is no charge, except your meal. Restrooms are clean. The museum is fun and interesting. I highly recommend a stop, especially if you're a KFC fan.

This is actually two parallel tunnels that carry four lanes of US-25E under the Cumberland Gap National Historical Park and join Cumberland Gap, Tennessee with Middlesboro, Kentucky. The tunnel opened to traffic in 1996. Interesting fact - this is one of only two mountain vehicular tunnels in the United States that cross a state line, the other being the East River Mountain Tunnel on Interstate 77 and U.S. Route 52 between Virginia and West Virginia. Each of the tunnels is 4600 feet long and 32 feet wide. There are cross-passages every 300 feet. There is no toll to use the tunnel in either direction. Awesome! The tunnels are 32' wide and 30' tall at their highest; the usable clearance is advertised at 16' 6". Traffic in and around the tunnel is monitored 24/7 by trained professionals. The tunnel is equipped with CO-monitors, and smoke detectors in the tunnel ceiling and crazy jet engine-looking ventilation fans to help air the place out. EMTs are always on call and fire trucks, ambulances, and wreckers are nearby just in case.

It's nestled off a quiet road so your gps will lead you there. While visiting TN and the Great Smoky Mountains, we wanted to explore a few covered bridges as well! This rustic one has undergone several renovations and restorations and it's on the National Register of Historic Places, I'm glad this gem of a bridge was saved!! It's in a little neighborhood which is pretty cool! The lattice work is beautiful and the stone foundation is impressive! Built in 1875, this bridge is 83 feet long and it was a thrill to drive through it! Now only about 20 vehicles pass through it daily, but it stands as a proud reminder of days gone by and a historic testament of architectural design and a wonderful legacy to those who love to keep the past alive!

The Sunsphere is an amazing architectural wonder and remnant from the 1982 World's Fair in…read moreKnoxville. My visit to the Sunsphere made my day. The 342' steel structure was designed by Don Shell and completed in 1982. The glass on the 75' sphere is coated with gold dust. During the World's Fair, a small restaurant operated at the top and visitors could visit the observation deck for $2. We were passing through Knoxville and my daughter wanted to visit. Today, visitors can pay to go up to the observation deck of the giant structure. ($10 for adults). You can buy tickets on line or at the Sunsphere. When we arrived, the Sphere was closed until 1:30, so we did not go up in it. But we enjoyed walking around and taking photos. There is parking a block south and the walk through the park is lovely. There is a drop off circle near the Sunshpere as well. Let's are not allowed in the structure.

The theme for the fair was "Energy turns the world" and Knoxville showcased solar energy by creating a replica of the Sun. I was fortunate enough to visit the Sunsphere during their "free local days" and all you need to show is your license to prove you're local to Knoxville. More free local days will be announced throughout the coming year, so stay tuned. Definitely recommend elevating your view of our little city by visiting the Sunsphere. Know Before You Go: ~ $10 tickets per adult and also annual passes can be bought in person. $40 for an individual annual pass or $120 for a family pass. Both passes are good for a calendar year. ~24 kt. gold panels are actually glass layered with gold dust. ~The Sunsphere observation deck was re-opened on February 22, 2022. The floor offers a 360-degree view of the Great Smoky Mountains, World's Fair Park, the Tennessee River, and the UT Campus. ~There is a small gift shop offering everything from Sunsphere Christmas ornaments, tee shirts, Sunsphere coffee tumblers, stickers, postcards, and more.

A very busy part of the Market Square area, this pedestrian bridge runs from Locust Street and…read moreacross Henley Street alongside the convention center. It brings together the Market Square retail and restaurant area with the World's Fair park and the Sunsphere. The bridge is wide enough for a golf-cart and definitely wide enough for four people to walk abreast. At Locust Street, the bridge is at street level. At the other side near the Sunsphere, there is a set of stairs and an elevator. There's also a nice view of the World's Fair park. We first stopped at the visitor center and we were thankful that there wasn't a lot of people inside. Staff here is very quiet and they weren't too interested in giving us a excited speech walking us to the area like most places probably would. Wasn't a big deal but this place has a nice gift shop and plenty of cool history and facts to check out. We then checked out the scenic Overlook which I have a separate review for. Then followed by going to the bridge that you drive through. Overall, I thought this place was a great little detour to check out and to rest my legs. Plenty of great things to see

This is an old cotton mill built in the early 1800s by the Lenoir family (lineage from…read moreRevolutionary War soldiers). During the Civil War's East Tennessee campaign it was almost burned down like other confederate supply buildings in the area. But it's claim to fame is that it was saved thanks to the passing of secret Masonic signs by the son of the mill's founder and union soldiers. Yup. Oh those good ol' ever-intriguing freemasons. Much of the damage you see now is due to age and actually to arsonist fire in the 1990s, apparently. Still, it's not much to look at. You'll have to use some imagination here. I wouldn't make this your primary destination or anything, but if you are in the area, this is worth a look.

Take a second to look up the deets about southern Appalachian rivers and tributaries that brought Joseph Gossett, pearling, and eventually: the Norris Dam. Cool stuff. If you are visiting Clinton, come to this historical marker (and do something else besides antiquing). Have a picnic, take a stroll, hang out a bit. Appreciate. If you are looking for another reason to check out this place just ask the local Hoskins store. Because this spot is also the Hoskins-Lane Market Place Park. Owned by the Hoskins and given to the City. Yep, your little kiddos are playing hide and seek and going to the summer festival atop another layer of cool history. Well to learn more about all that, you'll have to get a milkshake at the still buzzing 85+ year old Hoskins drug store just down on Main street.
