Two cans of coke (diet and ordinary), two bottles of water (sparkling and still), mars bar, pack of crisps. They should charge the price display for drinks. Guinness price shown as £5.95, charged £6.55 (I thought that this illegal). In the case of bar prices I 'm sure it doesn't come under the category "invitation to buy" rule. Air conditioning was supposed to be on, but didn't feel any benefit. I didn't have enough details about the availability of the pool. The room was quite roomy, and I think I got a family room. The bathroom was clean, but not enough space to put toiletries out. I could quite get to grips with the coffee machine. Needs a lot of pressure to put the lid down. Chose the large coffee option but got what looked like an espresso. Three coffee cups each with a small packet of biscuits. The bed was comfortable. Shower wasn't fixed, which suits me. Power not bad considering on the 6th floor. The evening meal was just above average. Breakfast selection was great. Pricing. Room with Breakfast - £134.83 Car Parking (not mentioned on the website) £5 per night Small Pino Grigio - £3.95 250 ml Malbec - £8.95 Calamari - £6.95 10oz ribeye steak - £23.95 Gratuity (from bar) not mentioned until checkout - £4.33 Total Bill £186.46

So overall about average for hotels. I can't really base my stay on anything other than my US…read moreexperiences but here it goes. The goods: - I booked on Expedia. The price was approximately $144 USD. This price was below what I would consider the average price for other hotels comparable in the area. - This hotel was within walking distance to the Gunwharf Quay (apparently pronounced "key" in Britain) and the University or Portsmouth. The train station (Portsmouth Harbor) was approximately a mile from the hotel but after looking at the map there may have been a closer train station north of the University. - There was plenty of historical sights as well as local night life within walking distance. - The coleslaw was super delicious. The bads: - The food was ridiculously overpriced. My buddy and I each got a club sandwich and one beer, cost was about 37 pounds ($40 something USD). It was good but not that good. - My bathroom had a huge water stain on the ceiling. - There wasn't ceiling van for ventilation in the restroom. - Climate control was centrally located. Even though there was a thermostat on the wall I'm pretty sure it was there for looks. I like a cold room, I would say it was anything but cold. Overall: For the price and location I would stay there again.

Ray Bezani, Manager of The Anglesey Hotel made our overnight stay a truly "Faulty Towers"…read moreexperience. We arrived to an unmanned reception with children running around and screaming between the dining room and reception area. We quickly noticed there was a Wedding reception taking place adjacent to reception and a note on the side of the hatch advised to go through to the bar if no-one was available. We went through to the bar and a member of kitchen staff volunteered to take us back to reception to check us in. A bizarre introduction to our stay, however we were pleased the chap (who was dressed in kitchen whites - maybe helping out on reception as other staff were involved with the wedding party?) was on hand to check us in and direct us up three flights of stairs to our room. A nice enough room, however when I sat down and sunk into the double bed, I noticed the mattress was very soft. I'm used to a firmer mattress, and as I was staying overnight for the Great South Run the next morning, a good night's sleep was essential! I went back downstairs to enquire if there were any other rooms available with a firmer mattress. Unfortunately the nice chap who checked us in had now busied himself elsewhere and again no-one was available on reception to help. I went down to the bar, but the lady serving didn't catch my eye for a while and when she did, unfortunately couldn't offer any answers to room availability. She then left for the kitchen to find her colleague Sheryl who went back to reception to see if other rooms were available. At this point Ray Bezani came through and asked "What's the problem?", I mentioned again to him that the mattress in our room was soft and he proceeded to tell how all the mattresses were the same in every room and how they were hand sprung and certainly not soft. I'm not sure how he expected me to respond to this. The mattress in the room we had been allocated was soft and "hand sprung" or not, I was not going to suffer a bad back and bad night's sleep (which I have before) from sleeping on a un-supportive mattress. Ray's attitude at best was grumpy, unhelpful, cold and unfriendly, at worst - rude, abrupt and quite aggressive. He quickly tried to put me off moving rooms by saying they were fully booked. I was frustrated by his lack of customer service or care in approach and pro-actively suggested a possible solution in looking at another room where guests hadn't checked-in to see if the mattress was a little firmer and if so, maybe swap rooms. Reluctantly he agreed, but in doing so demanded I bring the keys back down the three floors to Sheryl on reception again. While the conversation took place between myself and Ray, Sheryl looked apprehensive and uncomfortable - maybe use to her Manager's "grumpy" attitude and lack of friendly customer relations with guests perhaps? Hasten to say the second room had a much firmer mattress, we decided to move and apart from the room being excessively hot overnight (we opened the window half-way through the night to get some air flowing round the room even though the radiator appeared to be turned-off), we had a fairly good night's sleep. Breakfast was buffet style cereals, fruit and juices with a buffet cooked breakfast on hot plates. My partner commented the cooked breakfast was "fine" with the sausages standing out as probably the best bit, but the bacon was below par. Now, in terms of decor, this hotel is average, however if you read the brochure in your room you would think it was furnished in quality regency fittings. It's not and it's unfortunate that this expectation is also heralded on the hotel's website too. This hotel is definitely overpriced and for £79.50 for a very below average experience, I have no doubt a B&B would have been much friendlier, welcoming and grateful of our custom. The Manager of this establishment unfortunately was not. When we came to check-out the next day he glanced up and suddenly remembered my request for a room change. It seemed to throw him and they was a severe lack of pleasantries with a begrudging thank you when we paid £80 (50p makes no difference here!) for a rather disappointing and below standard experience. Gosport, I'm sure should demand more of their local hotels and hotel Managers if they wish to attract more tourism and money to the area.

I checked in and was given a complimentary pen, which was nice but I already have several. The same wonderful bellhop, Matthew, helped move my car. There was another man there. He was condescending and seemed to want to try to check in before I did. Although I sensed competition in him, so I ended up racing him to our separate rooms (I was in room 426 and he was in room 425). The room itself was cozy, and with a minor adjustment I was able to see the ocean. The bed was very very soft. I made sure of that. I also added my own personal touch to the room. The TV remote had a good signal (I made sure of that too) and when I picked up the phone I was greeted with a happy hello. I had trouble finding the bathroom to take a bath, but I quickly found the solution. There was a slight wait in the buffet hall, but that also moved quickly, with a little help from myself. The man in room 425 was also there, and challenged me to an eating competition (which I should tell you I won). There was oysters, and I ate several, but I feel they may have been a bit off. There was loud music at 12:05 am, but I very politely asked them to be quiet. In the end, five star stay! Will be back!

Very Highly Recommended…read more What a unique hotel with a great owner and team! Our party of four arrived after a short tour of Portsmouth. The hotel is hidden in plain site and can be difficult to find even though it stands out being a different color than the surrounding buildings. We rang the doorbell and were greeted by Ian the owner. I'm a life time elite member of a major hotel brand and I can honestly say I've never been treated as well as Ian and the folks there treated us. Alex offered refreshments and we sat in the beautiful garden where Ian was kind enough to talk about the history of the hotel and his involvement in making it into the beautiful accommodation it is today. After dinner we returned to hotel and once again enjoyed the garden. Our room was the smaller of two but was very comfortable, clean while reflecting the time period of long ago. The bathroom was like stepping into a time warp, very modern and up to date. Breakfast was outstanding and the room well decorated. If you only like chain hotels don't stay here but if you want to treated like family have an incredible experience in a building that's been throughly renovated with an incredible owner and team stay here! Other info: steps, we were on the top floor, so you have to climb steps, no A/C, each room has a small fan, it was in the 80Fs but we had no issues sleeping. Only 6 rooms, so book early. Free high quality WiFi.If we return to Portsmouth we will stay here

The staff are all very friendly and helpful. We had the complimentary breakfast most mornings, scrambled eggs, baked beans, sausage, fresh fruit. So much better than the typical American Holiday Inn fare. The location is great, right on top of the Outlet mall. There are several great restaurants in the mall and great pubs nearby, to include the Dolphin, where Lord Nelson drank the night before he set sail for Trafalgar. Speaking of Lord Nelson, the historic docks at Portsmouth are within easy walking distance, and could easily fill an entire day of exploration. The train station is also adjacent to the outlet mall, and can get you to London in about 2 hours. If you are going to be staying in the Portsmouth/Southsea area, I highly recommend this excellent hotel.
