There's only one minor problem with this thinking -- I'm happy 95.8 percent of the time and boy was I rolling high Friday night. So I kinda blocked out that part about playing golf with big boss super early the following morning up in Westchester. And if typical braggadocios form -- my huge golf ego got in the way because ""when you were a 6 Hcp Glenn, you can play in any shape" and I did -- back then and - wow - no translation to modern day times. My long time playing partner was clear " the front nine, it's gettable" and that fed into thinking "I'm not going to romance this course, I'm gonna charge right at it." Wham!! snap hooked a 3 iron into deep rough, blocked out by a huge pine tree, I'd have been better off swinging an old maids broom on this day. After 3 all I wanted to do was sit on a nice warm flat rock and watch the little fishies playing around in the beautiful natural streams, so I downed another bunch of Advil and pressed on. The bunkers were unplayable as Hurricane Ida dropped massive amounts of water on the course, yet greens fairways and teeboxes were prestine. I love Winton designs, the Golden Age of golf course architecture, no lining up the tee boxes with the correct passage to the green, fairway bunkers that hide just below the ridgelines - I thank the golf gods that I'm still long so I can fly my ball over them and the course plays short at 6,293 from the back tees. Some high handicappers on the course I could hear being snippy at each other and to all new golfers, please never do that, it doesn't matter if they can't play a lick, you should always encourage them.

My…read moreexperience mostly matched my initial expectation, though I was somewhat surprised by the rough edges of the beginning and the end of the meal. I had a feeling that the restaurant would be a place that was trying to be fancy without being truly fancy. It felt like the signs of attention to customers were there, without much actual caring about the customers or attention to our experience on the part of the staff, besides our actual server. The restaurant was doing most of the right things, but without as much care or attention as they are done in truly fancy or upscale restaurants. This made me think of how, in the Ritz Carlton properties, the management has worked so hard on instilling a company value of attention to customer experience, and how difficult it is to actually create this attention when it is not there. In a place with truly remarkable service the staff does not just act like it cares, it actually cares. And, more importantly, they have made it so much a part of their nature that it does not seem like work. Would I revisit this restaurant and why? I would revisit this restaurant because the setting was beautiful, the food was good, and the service was efficient and did not really mess up my enjoyment of my companions and our enjoyment of a beautiful summer night. I would not go if we could not sit outside, because that would remove the actual point of going in the first place. If the service were truly great, I would tell my friends that they should go, or even that they should join the club!

I have walked and carted around many a course in the states, Ireland and in Thailand too. The greens are as lush as the best courses in Ireland and more so a deeper green. My friend was previously the grounds director here a while ago. He was passionate about golf turf, even had the degree to show it, who knew, there was such a degree. I only learned about such a degree after meeting my friend years earlier. This course had an intensely passionate director, getting down into the greens to look at every grass blade during my tour of the course during the summer. You can tell this course is in the upper echelon of courses in the states and it shows.

His company of chit chat and recommended Yonkers golf tracks was most welcome. Glancing around the glade, the course is well woven into the mountain side at a sneaky 6400 yards of sloping fairways as you descend. On the practice range an older local gentleman approached me and delivered a summary that I quickly took down in yellow Sharpie and I'm glad he did. Managing your game, hitting shorter accurate shots is the only way to survive out here. When the holes slopes left to right, ya gotta draw it into it and fade the opposite way for us righties as balls settle deeply in the bog where the turkeys roam. The greens looked to have been airated (punched) a week ago, so they were mostly healed up, but putts did bounce a bit -- keeping an honest line and were quick from the back. After battling light hail on 18 tee - a par 3 and the cold front that was it's predecessor from 15, the golf day was done, totally dispensing my prior opinion of mountain golf. Back in the clubhouse quaffing steins of Yonkers Ale and making merry again, one eye on the sports tele, one ear on the sizzle of my burger a mere ten feet away and a hand on the Jack that keeps apoearing before me by the fellow to my left. Each little cook temp preference I gave was written down line by line resulting in the EXACT meal I was envisioning -- so double credit to my attentive barkeep and to the chef with the kind face and happy smile that delivered a doosie of a burger and fries.
