"Drink because you are happy, never because you are miserable" a wiser man than myself once said - I believe it was Chesterton. There's only one minor problem with this thinking -- I'm happy 95.8 percent of the time and boy was I rolling high Friday night. So I kinda blocked out that part about playing golf with big boss super early the following morning up in Westchester. And if typical braggadocios form -- my huge golf ego got in the way because ""when you were a 6 Hcp Glenn, you can play in any shape" and I did -- back then and - wow - no translation to modern day times. My long time playing partner was clear " the front nine, it's gettable" and that fed into thinking "I'm not going to romance this course, I'm gonna charge right at it." Wham!! snap hooked a 3 iron into deep rough, blocked out by a huge pine tree, I'd have been better off swinging an old maids broom on this day. After 3 all I wanted to do was sit on a nice warm flat rock and watch the little fishies playing around in the beautiful natural streams, so I downed another bunch of Advil and pressed on. The bunkers were unplayable as Hurricane Ida dropped massive amounts of water on the course, yet greens fairways and teeboxes were prestine. I love Winton designs, the Golden Age of golf course architecture, no lining up the tee boxes with the correct passage to the green, fairway bunkers that hide just below the ridgelines - I thank the golf gods that I'm still long so I can fly my ball over them and the course plays short at 6,293 from the back tees. Some high handicappers on the course I could hear being snippy at each other and to all new golfers, please never do that, it doesn't matter if they can't play a lick, you should always encourage them. read more

played here Thursday June 5th. it was 89 degrees and humid. Imagine our surprise and dismay when we reached the halfway house and found it closed. Really? Even worse there was no sign anywhere telling the golfers it was closed. We would at least have bought drinks at the bar before we teed off. Can anyone explain why this happened? Sad thing is they had an outdoor display selling shoes and shirts. So they could pay someone to set this large display up but not have someone operate the halfway house? Unacceptable. read more

Amazing public course. Probably the best public course in westchester county. It's a short course as it's just over 6000 yards from the 'tips' but the layout is great. All the rangers and workers are super friendly along with the restaurant staff. I play here multiple times a week and I rarely have problems. Only downside is the driving range. It goes across the 10th hole and they use plastic balls. It is good for warming up and light on your wrist however it isn't good for really judging where your ball is going. read more

Lost my 6i on the course and called to see if they had and I would pick it up. When the pro shop workers picked up I asked them if they had it they responed no when I asked them to double check he seemed to mock me saying to his co worker did I see wrong laughed and hung up on me. This was horrible professionalism and someone like that shouldn't be working at a golf course and should treat a paying customer with respect. But unfortunately I wasn't and hopefully nobody else will ever be via firing that asshole. read more

This is the best Golf Course Layout of the public courses in Westchester County. We give it 4.5 stars (but 5 on Yelp) Bc of the layout, fairness, playability and quality of staff. The ONLY flaw is pace of play, ONLY due to the amount of play. But still the greens are true, course is lush in season and grounds-keeper knows his stuff! The Bar/Resturant is exquisite as well! After thinking about this for several months finally writing a review to share my experience. Saxon Woods layout and conditions are totally ok for a muni course and it could be quite enjoyable. Last summer my group played there a few times on weekends and a weekday. The problem with the course is its horrible management, probably due to the lifetime employment held by county employees who could not care the least about the happiness of their customers or doing their jobs right. The pace of play was always ridiculously slow and when you see a Ranger out on the course it doesn't matter as they won't do anything about it. If a group is playing too slowly someone needs to speed you up or make you skip a hole. 6 hour rounds are never ok. Finally we tried to do something about it. The group in front of us was so slow, meandering along, dropping extra balls and there was a 2 hole gap open in front of them. As we stood on a tee on the back 9 watching this group, we called the pro shop, told them what was going on and asked that a ranger be sent to talk to this group. We were told one would be sent but no one came. Next hole exactly the same thing happened, but no ranger showed up. Finally a couple of holes later after we came off a green and we pulled up to the next tee, the group was there having nice conversations with each other, all hitting extra balls and generally playing very slowly. We so so politely asked them if they could speed up just a bit and pointed out the 2 open holes in front of them. Well that didn't work and we sucked it up and finished our round. After we came off 18 and were headed to the pro shop, one of the members of that group accosted us and used threatening foul language sharing his views of us. We did the right thing and walked away and went into the pro shop to turn in our cart keys and talked to them about the events of the afternoon. The most senior person there shocked us and basically said we were wrong and that we were the bad guys basically disturbing the peace. Wish I had gotten his name so I could report him. I'm a tax payer, and you deserve to be fired. We tried Saxon one more time a couple of weeks later.....after about 5 hours we were still on the 14th hole and we walked off. Never again. read more

Nice muni golf course in the heart of Scarsdale. This was the first time here for me, and I give it a solid 3.5 stars. Would be a 4 if not for a few instances, which I will list below. The course itself was in very good shape for this time of year and is deceptively long. From the blues, about 6350 or so, which is long for us shorter hitters. Fairways were in good shape, as were the tee boxes. Greens rolled true. Not much break, but you have to get it to the hole, which I did on a few bombs. The only minor problem was that as my foursome teed off, we were basically followed by the guys from the grounds crew with leaf blowers. I appreciate keeping the leaves off the fairway, rough and greens but guys, when a group is teeing off, shutdown the blowers! It was like having a hand dryer from a men's room right next to your ear as you line up your shot. We had a nice meal afterwards in the small but lively restaurant. Philly cheese steak with melted American and red peppers and onions. Moist, well cooked and served on a great crunchy hard roll. I will come back for sure. Took only 35 or so minutes from Queens. I didn't pay, but greens fees I think were 60 or so with a cart. Well worth it. read more

Felt crowded but it moved. A five hour round, not bad for a muni on Friday. Course was in good shape, some interesting holes (its come long way since I last played back in the 90's). 10th hole is the deal breaker. The fairway is literally the driving range. You hit your tee shot into a torrent of yellow balls flying, and scattered all over the fairway in front. Then all range activity is halted while you find/play your 2nd shot (under the watchful eye of everyone on the range that you're holding up). Crazy. Course planners need to rethink this. read more

Specifically for the driving range, I am not exaggerating when I say that I'm looking at a bucket of worn out yellow carved up sliced broken sad excuses for golf balls. Thanks Lindsay, I appreciate the response. Really this was the worst experience I've ever had with a driving range. They almost universally need to be replaced due to extreme wear and damage. Even the ones that are passable as range balls do not act anything like a typical golf ball. Until this is improved, you might as well advertise that Saxon Woods is charging people to hit broken whiffle balls. I want to re-emphasize that a reasonable amount of wear and tear on driving range balls is completely expected. This goes far beyond what anyone who has ever been to a driving range would ever find to be an acceptable experience. As an addendum, the plastic ball tees themselves are also the highest I've ever experienced, are not adjustable (which would be fine if they were a reasonable height) and are not reflective of what a large majority of people will be looking for when using a driver, be that at a range or in a tee box. I'd be more than happy to return and update my review if a timeline for improvement is provided in the future. read more

booked the last tee time for the day to go out and play with my daughter that is almost 4 to get her famil with the game as she played at the range many times. i was told she is not allowed to go out though it says that no where on the website. for a place that does junior clinics this is very disapppunting. had i known this i wouldn't have booked this course. read more

Lived a mile and half from this golf course and me, my dad, and my brother would golf every other weekend. Not the greatest of golf courses but not bad for a public one. Great place to go for a meal right after a long day on the course I always have fond memories of Saxon Woods read more

Saxon Woods is a nice layout with both easy and tough holes. The restaurant is first-rate, and the location is convenient - right off the Hutchinson River Parkway. On the downside, the rounds take way too long and a few staff members lack a golfer-centered attitude. read more

After a long needed day on the golf course my buddy and I reserved a tee time at Saxon woods. Upon our arrival we checked in 10 minutes prior to our tee time with the starter. We would have checked in sooner had the employee at the pro shop not been on a personal phone call. We then proceeded to be berated by the starter for "having the nerve" to only check in 10 minutes early. The starter then told us if we ever do this again we will be bumped from our start time and pushed to the "end of the line" and that we will see when we get on the course. At the end of our round the group behind us applauded us for our patients in dealing with the starters tirade. We proceeded to attempt to speak with the manager of the course about our experience who dismissed our concerns and told us that "that starter works Tuesday's and Fridays pick other days to play if you don't like him" If you want a pretty course with a moderate difficulty of play and don't mind rude employees and absent minded management Saxon woods may be the course for you. Set aside 6 hours though as the average rate of play is well below most. read more

The bartenders are rude. In particular, the one who's had "19 years of bartending experience," blonde, with chicken legs next to the inside bar. While standing waiting for a drink, having a pleasant conversation with my friends, she turned to us with a tissue in her hand and loudly played her nasal trumpet in our face. My friends and I must have had a look of shock on our faces because she wanted to know "what our problem was" and said "was it because you had to wait a couple minutes for a drink" with an attitude. I ordered my drink, I gave her a tip, and continued talking. She further asked the man I was with what he would like to drink and gave him his beer for free, obviously out of spite, and said "it's on me" with a cutsie little smirk. He turned to me and said "should I go to the bathroom and wash it before I drink it." LOL. By the time I got back to my table, my friends were hysterically laughing about the story with a new drink waiting for me. So if anyone reading this happens to be served by this bartender, her new name is Booger Bitch. read more

Played there Labor Day. What a mess (I know that you are thinking "Who plays Labor Day on a Public Golf Course" ...). The pace of play was very slow. I actually don't blame the family who brought their 5 year olds to play with them, they didn't know better. But to have a 6 (six) some in front of me comprised by the Concordia College Golf team, who were arguing that I was ok to play a six some since the pace of play was already slow, was appalling. as beginner golfer and only having played a handful of course I found Saxon to be the most fun to play..lots of hills including the sloped 2nd green. A few dog foots that for someone that haven't played the course before would be challenging. The greens, tees and fairways were in good shape. I look forward to playing here again read more

Fantastic course, with a great starter which is great for a consistent pace. Some interesting holes for an average golfer but would not test a low handicapper. The greens are in great shape and the fairways are not bad. The restaurant and bar are good and the food is good quality. The only thing that is just bonkers is that the driving range goes across one of the holes so you take your life in your hands crossing. This needs addressing as we had some drunk guys who thought it would be clever to try to hit us. read more

Long story short, staff and management is extremely rude. I would rate it 0 stars if I could. We, a foursome of women, came to practice for our golf team. We payed the correct about to play all 18 holes, but not all of us had golf bags thinking we could just put all the clubs in one bag and take turns holding it. The starter was not only rude but also very sexist allowing 4 other foursomes of men cut in front of us only because we didn't have the correct amount of golf bags although we had the correct amount of golf clubs for each of us to play. We understand that it is an insurance policy for each player to have their own set of golf clubs, but we all had the correct amount of clubs. But in saying that, they did not have to talk down to us. read more

I haven't played this course in 4 years because of previous problems I've had with it. I went today because I had no other choice. All the other Westchester courses were booked until after noon. Here's what previously concerned me: The pace of play was notoriously slow and averaged 6.5 hours a round. On one occasion my friend hit a ball in the woods and rather than look for it he dropped a ball right where he stood and hit a second shot. He was trying to save time but the ranger scolded him anyway. Meanwhile, that day there were backups of 4-6 carts on every tee box! So what was the hurry anyway? To add insult to injury I also witnessed something that astounded me... A 'squeeze play'. Westchester courses have a computerized system that schedules tee times every so many minutes. As I'm waiting on line at the pro shop to pay for my round this woman approaches the desk (cutting the line), asks the staff member behind the desk if he could 'squeeze her in', then slips him some money! I find out after checking in with the starter that she ends up playing ahead of my group. My group ends up teeing off 30 min later than originally scheduled. Such crap! Word on the street 4 years ago was that 'squeeze plays' are a regular thing. So today my friend and I went to Saxon and we went to the pro shop to pay roughly 15 minutes before our tee time. The guy in the shop was on some sort of phone call and he didn't check me in for at least 10 minutes. I finally got a receipt and went to check in with the starter about 5 minutes before our scheduled tee time. The starter went on this tirade about how we had to check in well before the tee time and next time we'd be punished and sent to the back of the line... Meanwhile there was no line! The only two people behind us told us later they commended us for our patience regarding this tool of a starter. Given my prior experiences with this place, with the pace of play and the squeeze plays, I could only ask myself, 'Are you kidding?'. I won't even get into my confrontation with the manager. Complacency and mediocrity clearly comes from the top. The sad part is Saxon Woods is a beautiful course and has its challenges which makes it fun for golfers. But the staff sucks. If you ask me, go one one exit up the Hutchinson Pkwy and play Maple Moor. It's just as challenging, more beautiful, and the staff is very nice. read more
