This year there have been zero field trips even though they were promised. Instead of taking kids to a museum tour as a field trip,they invite you(it's optional activity)to bring your kids on the weekend for a museum tour and charge you like 60$ per ticket.Ridiculous. Christmas party that was planned for a while was basically a bounce house. Other important thing,they are short on staff. The pictures of daily kids activities are posted on the app not very often.For that I don't blame the teacher(my kid teacher is great by the way,knowledgeable,passionate and caring and we really like her),but she is by herself most of the times so obviously can't do everything. It was so much fun; the teachers were cool, and it was a lot of fun after school because we'd get to dance to some music and watch movies. The language system was pretty good, I know fluent English because of that school. They made a second building, much better and larger than the old building. During 3rd grade things started going downhill especially at the cafeteria. First of all a teacher named Ms Chisholm began interrupting lunch. She'd blow up your ears by making the loudest sound ever. And it was just a whistle. She'd obviously get everyone's attention. She'd talk about how she can hear us from her office. And that was nearly every day. One day she told me to tell my own teacher for "talking" when I wasn't. Teacher didn't care. But that was just the beginning and things got more intense. 4th grade: Now in lunch there would be a watchdog that would slam a table to make noise over and over again. Then he'd yell "SILENCE!!!" It was ridiculous. He broke 2 tables and I never saw him again the day after he broke the second table. The same applied for after school but it was 2 teachers instead. My English teacher was strict but she knew what she was doing. My other teacher was nice but she also was smart. 5th grade: they switched my 5th grade teacher for medical reasons so the new teacher was ms nuñez. He has professionally diagnosed ADHD and…read moreAutism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and unfortunately our experience was extremely disappointing. I spoke directly with the vice principal during the second week of August 2025 and explained in detail all of the behaviors and challenges he would be coming in with. If the school felt they were unable to support him or handle his needs, they should have been upfront with me from the beginning. Instead, they accepted him, assured me that it would be fine, and gave me the impression that they were prepared to support him. From the beginning, I felt the administration and staff viewed my son as simply "badly behaved". The emotional impact on my son was heartbreaking. Every morning he became anxious approaching the building because he had begun to anticipate the reactions he would receive from Ms. Mesa, the counselor, and Ms. Claudia Zuriarrain, who were the two staff usually at the door. On multiple occasions, I personally observed both of them roll their eyes at my four-year-old son as he entered the building. Eventually, he started avoiding eye contact with them and sometimes walked into school backwards because he didn't want them to look at him. No four-year-old should feel unwelcome at school. When we finally received his official ASD diagnosis after the school had repeatedly encouraged us to pursue additional evaluations and an ABA therapist, the response from his teacher was deeply discouraging. She rolled her eyes and said, "Yeah... then it's probably very low." That comment felt dismissive and unprofessional, especially during a time when we were trying to advocate for our child, and ensure teacher had an extra set of hands in the classroom. Some of the behavioral strategies used were also concerning. When my son became dysregulated, he was frequently sent to the front office, where his meltdowns often escalated rather than improved, and led to early pick up almost every day. Toward the end of the school year, the principal, called me and explained that, moving forward, instead of taking him to the office, a member of the administrative or security staff would take him into the garden to give him an opportunity to calm down and regulate in a quieter, positive environment. To my knowledge, this approach was only implemented once. During one of his meltdowns, staff gave him Sour Patch Kids, and on another occasion, the principal instructed him to go into the bathroom and scream when he was upset. These strategies were discussed with me after the fact, and I was not given the opportunity to consent to them prior. The school also asked me often to keep my son home because they were unable or unwilling to manage his behaviors. On one occasion, I was asked to keep him home for an entire week. I complied with those requests, yet those absences were recorded as unexcused instead of being properly documented. Over the summer, multiple professionals and schools I consulted expressed concern about how Southside handled my son's IEP. Looking back, I believe the school failed to provide the support he needed and did not follow best practices for a child with his profile. My latest concern was the school's communication regarding my son's enrollment. We were told we couldn't return next year which I was okay with, but without my knowledge or permission, staff contacted what would have been his home school to inform them that he would be attending there the following year. At that time, I was still exploring different school options and had not made a final decision. I did not authorize the school to communicate on my behalf or represent my plans to another school. I understand that working with children who have additional needs can be challenging, but families should be able to trust that educators will respond with professionalism, compassion, and evidence-based support. Unfortunately, that was not our experience. Instead of receiving understanding and appropriate strategies, my son left feeling anxious, misunderstood, and traumatized by this school environment. I sincerely hope the school improves its training regarding students with disabilities, IEPs, and professionalism with both children and families. No family should have to go through what ours experienced.

When I addressed this with the school, I was shocked to learn that the teacher was aware of these threats but failed to report them or take action. I brought the issue to the assistant principal multiple times--not once, not twice, but at least three times--with my husband to discuss the growing concerns. Unfortunately, we never saw any sense of urgency in how the school handled the situation. Even though this was a clear threat, the administration seemed more focused on minimizing the situation rather than ensuring my son's safety. Eventually, the girl was moved to another class, but not before my son endured additional stress and fear. Shortly after, my son began coming home with bruises, explaining that other students were hitting and bullying him. When I raised this with the school, they brought in the school officer and seemed more focused on my son defending himself than addressing the root issue: other kids initiating physical altercations. As a parent, I understand the need to give grace to children, but when violence and bullying are involved, disciplinary action must be taken swiftly to protect all students. The school's failure to discipline the aggressors adequately, or to assure us that such incidents wouldn't happen again, was deeply concerning. At a charter school, I also understand their inability to share the specifics of the actions they took with other children, but there was no transparency or reassurance that these behaviors were being addressed seriously. Honestly, my son is too young to be dealing with violence in a school environment, and BridgePrep Academy should be ashamed of their failure to create a safe space for their students. I feel strongly that steps could have been taken early on to prevent the escalation of these incidents, but the administration repeatedly dropped the ball. Since moving my son to Norma Butler, I've seen a remarkable difference. He is thriving, there have been no incidents of bullying or physical altercations, and the teachers are proactive and communicative. I wouldn't recommend BridgePrep Academy to anyone. If you're facing similar issues, don't hesitate to find a better option for your child--it's worth it.

The historic marker was erected by the Class of 1964 in cooperation with the Historical Association of Southern Florida. Dr. Laura Cushman moved from Iowa to Miami in the early 1900s. After becoming an accomplished teacher in the county school system, she decided to open The Cushman School on the front porch of her home in 1924 with just 12 students. In 1926 the school moved into the Mediterranean Revival building designed by Russell Skipton that is still used today. The classrooms were arranged to ger the breeze from Biscayne Bay. Windows were added to the school that came from the Royal Palm Hotel in downtown Miami. The school bell on the roof of the main building is the same plantation bell that was used to call the construction workers to Villa Vizcaya. Today the campus is a mixture of the historic buildings and new ones and the high school building is a few blocks south on Biscayne Boulevard. Dr. Cushman served as principal of the school for 52 years. She wanted the children who attended the school to not only be good scholars but also good citizens with the character traits of industry, responsibility, reliability, courtesy, honesty and integrity. In 1992 the United States Department of Education named The Cushman School as a National School of Excellence. Today, the school consists of a mix of historic and new buildings spread across a beautifully landscaped campus in a historic pocket of Miami. The high school building is a few blocks south on Biscayne Boulevard. As a fellow educator I loved learning about Dr. Cushman's educational philosophy which positively influences the development of the child but with all of the data input and test taking that goes on in schools today, is not emphasized enough in the public school system. How refreshing to see that there is a school developing tools and educational programs that help children reach their highest potential while still promoting social responsibility. All of that comes at a steep price however as tuition ranges from $33,000 to $43,000 a year at The Cushman School.
