I know I do a lot of 5/5 reviews on here - I much prefer to chat about what I like rather than…read moredon't - and Mojo is one of those places that I'll feel eternally jealous of no matter how far I end up getting in life. The Leeds branch of Mojo is small but that adds to the warm and hospitable atmosphere. An extensive and well-researched, all-seasons cocktail menu compliments a strong back bar and beer selection. They don't serve draught beer here but do you really need that everywhere? No. I could spend hours looking at all the pictures of musicians and posters for gigs of the past in the Rhum Room (how's that for a rum selection btw? daaaamn!), which is a great little space to hire and for general use. My usual tipple is a bottle of decent beer and a chaser of the dealers choice for us both, and my latest visit was Brooklyn Lager and a Four Roses. Good call all round really. One of the few places in the bar and restaurant scene where I've never had an average visit.
I first came to Mojo years ago and I'm happy to report that the years have been kind, possibly…read morekinder to Mojo than myself, as the place has retained all the charm and fun that it ever had. At the far end of the bar there is an art work describing 'Mojo' and throughout the decor of the bar gives off the essence of cool, without being arrogant. I've always found the staff to be vibrant and friendly and they're certainly expert in their knowledge of the drinks they serve. Be it cocktails or a continental beer they can advise you well, depending on your palette. The music is cool, with a great mix of inoffensive indie and electro. You can dance, albeit be it at your own risk, since the bar is small and often tightly packed! Drinks might be a little more on the expensive side, and they don't serve anything on tap (at least they never used to), but that has the bonus side-effect of enticing a good crowd into the bar. Coctktails and interesting beers are on the menu so you're spoiled for choice! So, prop up the bar, grab a window stool or nab a comfy seat at the back, either way you'll be certain to have a good time.

Charco's is yet another place by the university that shamelessly emulates a successful high street…read morechain restaurant. You have Mahmood's (McDonald's), Highway (Subway) and now Charco's - which undeniably takes its cue from the insanely popular Nando's. This is perhaps the most copyright-infringing imitation of all three - the same little chicken logo, the same flame-grilled chicken offerings, and the same system of offering a choice of 'side' or, in Charco's case, 'sideline' (chips, rice, wedges etc). The menu is basically the same as Nando's too - you can get a serving of wings, or a half or quarter chicken, or a chicken breast in a pitta, as well as salas and platters and the like. How does it measure up to Nando's? Well, the food is cheaper, the service is quicker, and it's never as busy as Nando's always seems to be. The food isn't quite as nice, but it's still good and offers somewhere nice to sit down for a meal near the university, which is quite a rarity. And top marks for plagiarism.

For the main, I ordered a plain classic burger, and it was served with plenty of chips and coleslaw. It was fantastic. However, the tables are just a bit mucky, but it's not a major drawback. Also, the food service is quite slow, which if you're really hungry isn't much good.

I was passing chicken express and decided to give it a go. I had to do a double take at the price list. £1.99 for 2 pieces of fried Chicken, fries and can of Pepsi. That can't be right I thought! I love fried chicken so that was what I ordered. The elderly lady who took my order was lovely and this is obviously a family run business. There was a steady trickle of people so I had to wait while my fries were cooked. I don't mind that because it means everything is fresh. Sure enough a couple of minutes later I received 2 pieces of lovely juicy chicken, piping hot fries and a can of Pepsi! What an absolute bargain. There are seats and tables if you wish to eat in as I did because it was raining outside. When I left the old lady smiled and said goodbye, charming. They have lots of meal deals on chicken, burgers, pizzas, kebabs etc... and for the prices they are charging it would be rude not to go back! The only downside I can see is that they are not open late at night.

Hot Stuff is a bit of a mixed bag, and in my opinion, a bit of a pot luck kind of takeaway place…read more The pot luck element is of course with regard to their kebabs and other such items, I mean, if all you want is a portion of chips I really doubt you'll get a bad batch. As with many people, I'm sure, my sole usage of this establishment has been post-Cockpit. In this way it's always been a bit of a "I'm drunk and therefore want evil food" kind of relationship between Hot Stuff and I, and in that at least, I can say that they have been faithful, cheery and dutiful. I certainly couldn't advise eating there sober - but then I can't think of a kebab shop anywhere that I would choose to dine from, for say my working lunch. Sometimes the kebab has been magic, sometimes the kebab has been the opposite. This variable could of course be down to my alcohol consumption, I might add. Whilst it's not the nicest place to be after 2am, given all the drunken bloke-ness around here, the staff have always been pretty friendly. I don't know if I could be, working here and serving quite so many intoxicated muttonheads - so props to them! All in all, Hot Stuff serve a range of much demanded take away foods for the masses - most especially after a big night out on the town.

But then again, you could be of the opinion that if you have to do it, you may as well go the whole hog and buy something just plain bad for you, and not something that pretends to be reasonable. This is my main issue with Subway. It pretends to be a healthy alternative. But once you've topped up with cheese, mayonnaise and the rest, and then evaluated the fat, salt etc the main ingredients actually have too, you start to wonder if it was really any good for you after all! And does it really taste good? Really? I can't say I've ever walked away thinking, "My what a delicious and well thought out sandwich!" Beyond this, I have never gone into this Subway and had actual fresh bread - it's always been crusty and tasted stale. The staff generally don't care about serving you well - I suppose I wouldn't either in that scenario. This Subway in particular, whilst having an outdoor seating option, always seems to litter the outdoors area with balloons, which invariably wilt and droop and become messy eye sores lying around the pavement, which is also a source of annoyance to me too. Essentially, whilst I have used Subway in times of need before, I generally begrudge it a lot and end up wishing I'd hung on until I gotten home.

In short, it was a perfectly acceptable caffeine hit but nothing spectacular. The food fared a little better, and the pizza I had was tasty, generous and well priced, although my friend's burger warranted less glowing praise. Mezmez feels like it's trying hard to be a proper Italian establishment, but it commits the common crime of feeling like it has to offer other dishes too, and it's the inferior quality of these that lets the whole side down. That, and the coffee. A better choice than many of the cafes and takeaways in the area, but it will have to do better to compete with the mighty Box up the road.
