Title of Article: "I Am Someone Who Makes More Money Than You"
Concerning: GVA Kidder Mathews and its employee, Mr. Sheldon Pont
To make a long story short, my investors and I have been searching around Northern California for a location to lease to open up our small food service business. GVA Kidder Mathews looked like a reputable company, so I called them up for assistance in my search. The secretary forwarded me to one of their 30 brokers named SHELDON PONT, whom I soon found out was a real classless representative of GVAKM.
Without much experience and knowledge in the commercial business industry, I asked and explained to Mr. Pont what I was looking for. I told him I was looking for a location that could be from Sacramento to San Jose. Mr. Pont seemed uninterested and asked for my contact number. I asked him how long it would take him to get back to me, and with a rude tone, he replied, "maybe never if I don't find anything". I was surprised by his comment, because to me, it basically meant he was uninterested in my inquiry, let alone call me back. As new as I am to commercial real estate and it how it works, I asked him if it was possible for him to do a quick search for me on his computer. It obviously upset him because he promptly replied that he "did not want to do business with me", and that he didn't want to "horse around". I then asked him how he conducts business with clients on a daily basis, in which he responded, "I am not going to explain to you how I do business". At this point, I was very upset, and asked for his name. He then responded, "My name is none of your business". So I told him I was serious in my search for a business location, and that I called with all sincerity for help. I was so upset that I told him he was the one horsing around! He then told me, in these exact words: "I am someone who makes more money than you!"
Wow...I could not believe what I had just heard from Mr. Pont's mouth. Did he just tell me he was someone who made more money than me? Really? Did I really deserve the negativity and condescending comments? I understand he might have thought I was not serious in regards to my search because I called in to look for a location in many parts of Northern California rather than a focused location, but telling me that I was horsing around and that he was "someone who made more money" than me? So because he makes a lot of money, has degrees in B.S., M.A., and J.D., it gives him the divine right to treat and talk to me like I am an 800 BC Roman slave? Is this what GVA Kidder Mathews is really about, treating people with a lack of basic human respect?
What happened to the slogan on their website: "Since 1969, Kidder Mathews has built a reputation of integrity and is known for focusing on delivering results that meet and often exceed client expectations"? Really? Their integrity is built upon telling potential clients they are not interested in doing business with them and that they make more money than people like myself who call in with sincerity for a little help? Sure enough, the results were delivered, but my expectations of the company were nowhere near satisfactory, let alone exceeded.
After my experience with Mr. Pont, I want to make sure that people stay away from GVA Kidder Mathews, especially Mr. Pont. Now, I understand Mr. Pont is only one of many brokers and employees that works for the company, and that he should not solely reflect on the image of GVA Kidder Mathews itself. However, if the company decided to hire someone as atrocious and classless as Mr. Pont, then GVA Kidder Mathews should also take responsibility. Perhaps the company is better off without someone like Mr. Pont? read more
