I moved to Maui 2 weeks ago and brought my 6 month old Golden Retriever Maggie over with me from California. I only wanted to bring my puppy if I could do direct airport release (DAR) with no quarantine so I started the process 3 months out. Kihei Vet was one of the choices to meet my dog on arrival so I contacted Kim at KVC and she was amazing. Being a new dog owner and trusting my puppy to strangers was uncomfortable but Kim helped me through the whole process and it was easy! They did a great job and my puppy is now living in Maui thanks to their care and concern for her well being. I highly recommend them! read more

After bringing our very sick dog in, the vet was extremely rude to us. After getting insulted and going through what felt like a "money grab", the actual care of our pet felt like the least important thing to them. Our Dog ended up dying and instead of taking any responsibility, they tried to turn it on us. They asked me to come in and I thought it was to apologize and compensate us in some way. Instead, the man berrated me for over a half hour and continuly tried to change the narrative, no matter how many times I corrected him. I left there sick and have felt sick about it since. I have called the office to speak to the manager again and she never returned my calls. This place is serious bad news. Don't take your pets to the awful place. After reading his long winded responses to every negative review, I'm not even going to go into anymore details and deal with anymore of his toxic hostility. I end up coming in at least once a month as we have many fur babies! The way they interact with my animals, always assures me that my babies are in the BEST hands. I had the chance recently to visit Kihei Veterinary Clinic. While I was there I was lucky enough to be given a tour by one of the owners who had some free time and I also got a glimpse of what goes on behind the scenes! Wow, as a client you mostly just get to see the lobby and the exam rooms but this time I was able to see their treatment areas, xray area, pharmacy and all the stuff you know must be there but you never get to see. I was impressed by the layout and how everything was organized as well as how busy and committed to their work everyone seemed to be. There were two really sick dogs there from the same family and everyone was heartsick over it and trying to do everything they could to make a difference. Sometimes when you talk to the staff you don't realize how much they care until you see them in action trying to save a life. As clients we don't always get to witness that. Dr. Leaper was there and getting ready to go out on a house call and his staff was so good about making sure he had everything he needed because who knows the situation will be when you get there? Anyway I really appreciated the tour and it gave me a deeper understanding of the practice and how dedicated they are to helping animals. Dr. Leaper is the best. We have a special needs dog (very special needs...he was found in a ditch in Lahaina when he was a few months old and has several neurological abnormalities). Doc Leap NEVER suggests we do more than is indicated for the specific reason we brought him in, while at the same time never making us feel like he's rushing us out. He sits on the floor to treat our guy bc Houdini has difficulty standing for too long. He is thorough and kind and explains everything in detail. One time I was bringing in both of my dogs at the same time, and his front desk staff saw me struggling in the parking lot. They came outside and insisted on letting them help me. ​​ I took my dog in for a small limp and when I picked him up he was worse than when I dropped him off when I called them they said that he has arthritis and that they were moving his limbs around he's probably just sore but he's progressively gotten worse since his visit and now he can barely walk and this happened just a week or two ago I really think something went wrong and they did something to hurt my dog now I have to take him to another vet to see what's really going on . Needless to say I'm very upset about the care he received at Kihei Veterinary Clinic I'll never take my dog back there. Let me begin with the answer to all you pet traveling concerns... KAREN HANNIE DVM!!! My husband, newborn daughter and I are planning to move to Maui in the next few months and will be traveling with our two little furballs, Bella and Delcie, both Morkies. Karen emailed me back and forth and even spoke with me over the phone multiple times to go over the process of how to move to Hawaii with pets. She has a wonderfully easy to understand checklist she emails and has all the necessary paperwork from the Hawaii Department of Agriculture needed, as well! The process can be a bit confusing but she answers her personal cell to answer all questions and walk you through it! She is absolutely wonderful!! She eased all my anxiety and was able to answer and guide me through all my questions and concerns! Karen Hannie saved us OVER $1,200 with her knowledge of the required Rabies Titer FAVN blood work needed to move to Hawaii! Every vet office I checked here in California in the Sacramento area wanted to charge me over $575 PER DOG for this test and Karen said, "NO, absolutely NOT! Do not pay that. They are taking advantage of you! They should not be allowed to charge that much!" She advised me to call back and ask how much each office would charge me to have "blood drawn and packaged" done and some vets said, "I've never heard of that service being requested before" so I kept calling different vet offices and finally found one that does not over charge and they knew exactly of that services I was asking about regarding moving to Hawaii and only charges $35 per dog for the blood work and packaging!!! This is so I can take the blood in a tube vial myself to Fedex and have it shipped to Kansas State Rabies clinic and pay them directly, which saves us over $600 per dog!! CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS!? I was so happy with her knowledge and help on how not to get raped and overcharged by these crazy vet offices! The vet office I found with these great prices is Orangevale Vet Hospital in Orangevale, California! Highly recommend them! THANK YOU KAREN SO MUCH FOR EVERYTHING! I've been taking my dog to Kihei Veterinary Clinic since 2016. After my recent experience, I felt it was my duty to leave a review of my complete experience, past & present, to inform the public. I took my dog in a couple years back for dental cleaning and when I went to pick him up, they told me that they had to pull some teeth, this was without contacting me, and they wouldn't show me the teeth they pulled, just the invoice. Strike One! Even though I was disappointed, I believe in second chances so I stayed with them but kept in mind what they did so that I could let them know that I want to be notified with any changes to the treatment in the future. About a year ago, I had an emergency and needed to get in, my dog couldn't walk and was in extreme pain, but they said that they were short staffed, and I would have to take him somewhere else. UGH! Strike Two! Well, this week, I thought I would give them another chance since they are close, I called them on Tuesday to see if I could get my dog in for a nail trim, and they were able to schedule him in pretty much any day this week, I guess their schedule is very open these days even with their minimal staff. I made the appointment for Thursday morning, and as I parked, I noticed multiple signs posted all over their wall and on their windows and doors stating their policy for entry, which I had No Problem with. So, as I opened their door, I notified them, and made a joke while doing so, that I didn't have with me the item to comply, and the item was brought to me by a nice receptionist, I made a light comment about the item that I was handed of what I was informed by my Doctor and many others. This is where things changed, I guess it was the vet, he started raising his voice at me from far across the room stating, "I'm a Doctor" "I'm a Doctor" and on and on! This is when I left because I didn't feel comfortable leaving my dog with him. Strike Three! It got even worse; within about an hour, this "Dr" started emailing me long rants from the clinics email address to my personal email address. I'm hoping his patients weren't being neglected during this time. This was just weird. I definitely made the right decision to walk out and not have them perform a simple nail trim, who knows how my pet would be treated if pet owners are treated in such a disrespectful manner. I would Never Recommend Kihei Veterinary Clinic or any other Clinic this "Dr" may work within. This review was revised to comply with Yelps Guidelines, see attached pic for the Truth on why. We moved to this vet clinic after reading the great online reviews. We were at another place, closer to our house, but this place felt more welcoming. We brought our dog in, for a health check-up and some concerns about her biting or chewing herself. The vet explained to us about some dog behavior and even went so far to kindly give my husband advice about lowering "his yang" so that the dog, who seemed more on the "yin" side, would feel less threatened by his boisterous, happy go lucky personality. She also educated us on the heartworm issue here on Maui. We had no idea! It is imperative that all dog owners give their dogs monthly heartworm medicine due to the prevalence of the disease here on island. Poor doggies. It might sound spooky-hooky to some people but I thought her professional manner and theory about the on-again, off-again relationship between the dog and my husband was spot-on. "Lower your yang" became a funny joke for us, for a while. ;) Overall, we were very satisfied with our experience and plan to return, and add our cat to their clinic. read more

She puts everyone at ease, humans and animals alike and makes difficult situations a little more bearable. The rest of the staff is equally helpful. I wanted to commend Dr. Helman and every technician/reception/staff person I've encountered here since I started with them a ack in August.Today she got her teeth cleaned, which marks our third visit since we got to the island. I've been all over the country and have had many vets over the years, all of them with pluses and minuses. But I have to say that Kihei Vet Clinic is simply a class act, all around. They actually love animals (which hasn't always been my experience), and everyone -- reception, techs, assistants, and Dr Helman -- is kind, informed, and attentive to what is going on with my dog. I've been to vet offices that barely seem to keep track of who's on the appointment list for the day, let alone have everyone in the chain know my dog by name and exactly what she's there for. As a practical matter, they tell me what I need without throwing in stuff I don't. They are straight up, transparent about costs, and clear about potential contingencies. They educate without condescension, and they offer alternatives based on various factors -- urgency, costs, timing, holistic approaches when applicable, etc. They're professional, trustworthy, and a pleasure to work with. Everything that Jerob has written about what transpired if totally fabricated. Though i agree with safety protocols, the vet did require 5 tests which is ludicrous for spaying. The test required were not 3 the 5 were -CBC -Chemistry panel -PT/INR -Liver bio -heart worm. The quoted amount for 2 tests was $360 but the receptionist said would increase once we figured the cost of additional testing. When I called and spoke to the receptionist I gave my direct line and asked for a call back. When I didn't receive one, I called again and asked for another call back. So I guess some time after they decided to send an email to a email that hasn't been used in 5 years. This is highly unprofessional. I would expect more from a vet that has 20 years of experience. Some things are understandable but what was quoted as $600ish quickly turned into $1100+. This is for a spaying $1100+ insane! I just want to thank Everyone at Kihei Vet Clinic, Dr Leaper, the vet techs and staff. Everyone is always kind and today my senior dog, Lucy, received special care for her treatment as she was especially nervous since it was her 3rd visit this week and they just made sure she was extra comfortable, so gentle, and I was so grateful for how it went. It gives me great comfort knowing how much they care. My 2 dogs have been going here for the last 3 years and we are there frequently for allergy shots, senior dog issues, etc. I have nothing but good things to say. We relocated to Kihei during the pandemic from Missouri, we spent total 20 hrs trying to get to Maui with a small dog and 4 year old. All I could worry about was We werent going to make it before the quarantine office closed. karen from Kihei Vet Office assured me that no matter what time we arrived she'd be there waiting for us at gate. She was awesome, super friendly and kept me updated on what was going on as the plane was landing, and their progress to us at the agriculture center. SAUL of DAWGBARBER is Professional, experienced groomer. He used to groom show dogs in Los Angeles before coming to Maui. We are more than lucky have him here! Unlike other groomers he keeps the dogs about an hour, so they are not stuck in cages waiting on their turn. He is compassionate, excellent at his craft and is pleasant and professional to deal with. I brought my 2 poodles here several times ( after having an awful experience with Nichole at Pet Waggles, formally Salty dogs of Wailuku-read my review if curious) My poodles were returned happy, in about an hour. They looked fantastic and his prices were very reasonable. He is a particulary, experienced poodle groomer, among being superb at all dog breeds. I am so happy I found him working out of Dr. Kiehlers Kihei Veterinary Clinic in North Kihei( I also recommend him-see review) . The drive is only 15-25 minutes from Wailuku and 18 minutes from Kahului he is definitely worth the drive and you can do errands or walk on the beach until they are done. He also does boarding and doggie daycare. I haven't tried that but my friend recommends. Call 879-5777 for an appoitnment and contact me if you need more information.
