This is a great spot for a break while cruising around the curvy roads nearby. During the fall season, the shop sells a variety of gourd fruits (squash, pumpkins, etc) as well as apples and cucumbers. There are also lots of apple cider products available, which really hit the spot of not being too sweet. read more

This review's only for their store. Came here to volunteer to glean veggies for misc. food kitchens around 8:30am, but apparently, cider donuts and pie? were already sold out. I bought a small container of berries and brussell sprouts by the pound. They also sold peach iced tea that also supported some cause as well if purchased. There was also a good selection of honey sticks near the register. Once picking season comes back around, I would like to come back. In the mean time, this is the closest farm I can think of to me and definitely serves it's purpose! read more

This is a great pick-your-own farm offering 20 varieties of apples, along with blackberries, raspberries, peaches and plums. They'll give you a bag and let you wander their farm. They also have a pumpkin patch, hay rides and a country store serving up hot cider donuts and mulled cider. The hot cider donuts come in mini form, a dozen for $3.69. They were delicious! The hot mulled cider was nice too. It's a $1.50 for a cup. The pumpkin patch a was a little disappointing. There weren't very many pumpkins and based on their website, we were under the impression it would be "pick-your-own," but it was just a normal pumpkin patch. I'm not even sure if the pumpkin were grown there. I saw no remnants of a former pumpkin patch. They do give you a cute little red wagon to take out to the field to pick out your own already-been-picked pumpkins. This farm was cute and made for a great autumn day out! read more

Kimball Fruit Farm is literally on the border. It's located in both Hollis, New Hampshire AND Pepperell, Massachusetts. In fact, its Hollis, NH location is listed on its company trucks. You get to see the "Bienvenue" sign welcoming you to the Granite State. The people at Kimball are very friendly, and their You Pick selection is amazing. They have stunning views of the Merrimack area. They make their own salsas; they have their own line of products. It's also a great place for heirloom tomatoes. A pleasant spot. read more

Love this place! They show up at local farmer's markets in the Summer, which is how I got to know about them. Incredible varieties of apples. Sheep-lip, anyone? I'm an apple maniac- finding a place that lets me sample new varieties is perfect! Good prices for pick your own, by the way. I think these are the same Kimball's that are famous for their ice cream. My only complaint is that their parking lot is really rutted, and gravel. When I ride out there in the summer, I'm forever worried about dumping my motorcycle. read more

What is there to love? Kimball Fruit Farm (not Kimball Farm -- go there for the world's most amazing ice cream. You're welcome) is in Pepperell, on the border between MA and NH. What's there? A nice-sized apple orchard with lots of apple varieties and no admission fee unlike every orchard within a half hour drive of Boston (this is about a 1 hour drive from Boston). Is it worth it? Totally. The end of season apples looked a little small this past weekend, but folks, it's the end of October and have you been outside? Brr. There's a reason why the fruit trees have given up. We humans have not been kind to our planet. This past spring warmed up and then went back into a hard freeze and according to all the produce growers I know, this caused quite a few fruit trees to go, "Yeah, NO!" and seriously refuse to produce for the year. My favorite CT orchard lost 3/4 of their amazing peaches this year. Just goes to say. How do I know about Kimball? When I lived in Union Square (well, I still go back), I'd hit up my backyard farmers market and Kimball would consistently have the best quality and variety for the price -- some of the best tomatoes I've ever had? Kimball. 10 lb of bagged honey crisp (yeah, you heard me)? Kimball. Go on their no frills website to see how many of Boston's top restaurants have got in on the awesomeness and source produce from them. Go to the apple orchards (sorry, they might be closed after today. It's October, guys), and you can get apples for $1.25/lb. Bring your own reusable bag! Weigh it later! It's awesome! The apple trees aren't all really marked and for end of season produce, I could maybe discern at least 2 types -- I'm far from an apple cultivator -- there were at least 6 posted types this past weekend. I imagine that their farm stand will be active for a bit longer, given storage and all. What's in their farm stand? Lots of squash, things you'd find at the farmers markets at the same prices, jams (they have blue barb jam! It is what it sounds like), little bags of mini apple cider donuts, etcetera. Stop by Kimball Farms on the way home and you can have your own (deconstructed or constructed) world-famous apple pie a la mode. Or just eat the apples, wolf the ice cream, come back for more. Apple fix for the year -- check. Hooray! read more

Never been to the actual farm, but I go to the farmer's market stand in Dewey Square religiously on Tuesdays and Thursdays. They always have the biggest selection of gorgeous produce, and the people working the stand are so friendly and eager to help. I always chat with one of the guys that's been running the stand for years now.. he recommends new veggies that I've never even heard of and shares some great cooking tips (carrot top pesto, anyone?) I have never been a fan of tomatoes but last year I remember seeing their ridiculous heirloom selection and I just HAD to try one. I've been buying tomatoes by the armful ever since! read more

I hate tomatoes, always have. But then, I'd never had one of theirs. Nice! PYO raspberries, $3 a pint. Incredible deal. What's unique about this farm stand? I've yet to pick up something there and get home to find it was a junky half ripe import. 7/2014 update- what is going on?!?! Farmstands may not want ripe peaches that get damaged but we don't visit farmstands to get unripened peaches. We can get that junk at any grocery store. :( read more

Have never been to the farm (perhaps this year will be the year) but I really love these guys at the farmers markets. I typically go to the one in Davis square, but they are at many. The staff is always so friendly and helpful, its an amazingly pleasant experience. I have seriously been looking forward to buying fruit from them again all winter long. I do a lot of bulk ordering for canning and I think their prices are as excellent as their produce. I am so happy to put my money into a business that does it right. read more

have gone here 2 years in a row now. nice little place, not fancy, but everything you need. would like a real bathroom, but a lot of these farms only offer porta potty, at least there is a water sink outide with soap for hand washing. the apples are great, nice and low, easy for kids to reach. plenty of pumpkins, also a nice farm store with honey, jam, cider, the usual stuff. everything is reasonably priced. there are hills to walk up and down, but the place is small, so as long as you don't have mobility problems it's ok. there are some picnic tables we had brought our food so we stayed and ate. the place is nice and clean. people are nice. read more

I've been apple picking here since I was very little (like, months old). It's wonderful because you get a real apple picking experience without the crowds, ridiculous prices, and "agritainment" (agriculture plus entertainment). Nope, what you get here is 10x better- acres of apple trees, a beautiful pumpkin patch, and a really quaint little store selling all kinds of produce and baked goods. And if you time it right you may even get to see a sky full of colorful parachutes from the skydiving place nearby. We look forward to apple picking at Kimball's every year. I have old VHS family videos of apple picking here in the early 90s, and it's nice to see that it hasn't changed much. So many apple picking "farms" charge admission, have lines, rides, and shockingly few apples. This is the place to go if you want the authentic apple picking experience. I have a little one on the way and can't wait to continue this tradition! read more

I've been shopping at the various Farmer's Markets in different neighborhoods of Boston since 2004. Over the years I have found I tend to look for and shop from many of the same vendors every week. In fact, I make a point of chatting up and getting to know the vendors that I shop from. I've been buying my fruits and tomatoes from the Kimball Fruit Farm stand for at least the last few years, if not longer. In the last few weeks though, I have had experiences with my purchases there that reveal they are no longer taking care in their product, nor respecting their patrons the way they used to. Three weeks ago I bought a bag of mixed salad greens - pre-bagged, with some nasturtium flowers on top - for $5.00. This was the first time I have bought my salad greens from Kimball's. What I found when I got home and opened the bag made me very angry. I found that more than 50% of my $5 bag of mixed micro greens was chopped up bits of head-lettuce, disguised among a sprinkling of micro greens. If I wanted head lettuce, I'd have bought a head of lettuce and gotten a lot more salad for a lot less money. I assumed it was an error, so decided to Kimball's another chance the next week. So last week I bought another bag of the "mixed micro greens" (i'm not actually sure if that is the right term for them - I think most people commonly refer to them as "baby greens" or "salad greens"), and a pint of blueberries. When I got home, i found again that my $5 bag of greens was more than 50% chopped bits of head lettuce, and this time it was already on its way to rotting. I also found that the lower half of my pint of blueberries was completely smashed and partially molded. I am so offended that Kimball's would essentially use filler to bulk out their bags of micro greens and then continue to charge $5 for them. Not only do I find it offensive that they think their shoppers won't notice or that what their patrons are looking for is just an overpriced bag of chopped salad like you buy at Shaw's, I am also appalled because Kimball's should know better. Cut greens rot much faster than uncut greens - that is why you don't rinse and chop your head lettuce until you are ready to use it. Including chopped greens in a bag of baby greens also causes the rest of the bag to rot faster than it otherwise would. I advise all readers who shop from Kimball's at the Farmer's Mkts to check your product before leaving the booth. I myself will not buy from them again. read more

I love Kimball's, and they just got better. The produce is wonderful and reasonably priced, much of it raised at Kimball's. Other items are locally sourced, but pretty much everything is identified. Heirloom tomatoes are a highlight, and, in spite of the early thaw, they have peaches this year! Best of all, you can now purchase a card for $50 worth $55 in purchases, a 10% bonus. If you find yourself north of Boston, I highly recommend a side trip to Kimball's. Now that I live nearby, it is a once or twice a week stop for me. They also offer pick-your-own fruits in season. read more
