As a female patient, I cannot recommend this doctor in good conscience…read more There are a lot of primary care docs out here who still practice the old-fashioned way when it comes to women's health - in particular prescribing oral contraceptives. Both CDC and ACOG guidelines state that birth control pills can be prescribed by primary care (read: non-OB/GYNS) after a regular physical and blood pressure check. However, many primary care doctors still refuse to do that and insist women pay up for a specialty appointment with a gynecologist and submit to pap smears/pelvic exams in order to get oral birth control. While the two things may sound related, they are not. I get that I would need to see a gyno if I was looking for an IUD or implantable device, but definitely not for BC pills. And yet, many doctors (this one included) refuse to prescribe oral birth control unless their patients go see a gyno - holding oral contraceptives hostage to force female patients to submit to an invasive examination that now (according to recent literature) may not even be indicated for a significant population of women. In addition, I told her about some weight gain that concerned me at my last appointment, and her response: "Well many girls your age can lose weight with exercise, I don't see why you can't." At the time I was exercising 3-4 times a week, eating a healthy diet as a professional with a doctorate degree - This "girl" is not looking for that kind of response from a medical provider. To any ladies out there experiencing the same issue, as much as it annoys me that our BC should be covered by our insurance through a prescription from a live doctor, there are alternatives out there (if you're willing to pay out-of-pocket) for obtaining oral contraceptives. I'm tired of fighting this battle with every out-of-touch primary physician and may go this route myself. So yeah, anyway. This doctor? Sorry, cannot recommend. P.S. Don't take what I say as medical guidance - only sharing my person OPINION regarding my experience with this provider and generally as a healthcare consumer.
