With Spitalfields and Borough Market you can get a variety of food form fresh bread to on the spot sandwiches but this market is more like a fruit and veg / cheap little market selling cheapy food and goods, not really up-market and fancy. Very no frills. Even if you can't be bothered going all the way East or to the Southbank, Northcote Road Market (a very continental market) is close by. I'm not really sure what this really has to offer and I wouldn't trust the fruit and veg from here either, I'd give it a miss.

I wandered through the plastic flowers, reggie music shops, sari fabric stalls, toys that don't meet EU standards, dodgy bags, henna hair dye and weave in a selection of fabulous colours. It's great to mooch around, buy household essentials, cheap summer clothes or even have your nails done! Its for locals, so don't expect glamour, expect friendliness. I bought some lovely plastic flowers and the lovely gent said I smiled so much he gave me another bunch for free! You can't beat that for customer service! It's one to go with a friend to have a mooch and browse away. Don't judge a book by its cover. this really is a fabulous gem of a market.

One maybe should call it a delicatessen store rather than a butcher. The shop is small and has every surface cramped with delicious food. I went in as I was looking for some cheese. The range on offer was leaning towards Stilton and hard cheese, so if you want Camembert or Brie you will need to stock up in the supermarket across the road. The lovely lady behind the counter was giving me different cheeses to try, but I did not test her on her cheese knowledge, as I would not be able to call her on it anyway. The staff are very chatty and friendly in general. I also got the feeling that this is a family business, so I'm more that happy to pay a bit more to support this local shop. Credit cards accepted for amounts over £5.

Well, it turns out it was worth it. This place is dedicated to local Farmers who are growing and raising the produce themselves. After reading 'The Omnivore's Dilemma' by Michael Pollan earlier this year (I recommend this book to anyone who wants to know how the food gets on your table) I have developed a keen interest in buying my food in this way, and it appears so have a lot of other people as these kind of farmer's markets are increasing substantially in popularity. This market is held weekly in the grounds of a local school and has a very good choice of organic vegetables & fish as well as free range meat (chicken, beef, lamb, pork, sausages, bacon). You can also find buffalo mozzarella, fruit juices, cold cuts and yoghurt. The stall holders are very keen to explain how it may have been grown, reared and caught and although it's a little more expensive than your local supermarket the pay-off is taste, quality and ultimately your health.

The cut is just so beautiful. The prices are expensive though. This is like a holiday meat place. Go here for your Christmas turkey or your Easter sirloin steak. They don't really discount, so maybe you can buy one slab of meat a week from here for Sunday dinner. If you do want to sample some of their meat but you're on a budget, usually during warm weather periods they smoke/roast a pig on the road outside of their shop and make pork sandwiches on the weekend. The pig smells delightful as you're walking up the street. When you see it on the skewer rotating around it looks kind of sad because usually the head is still on it, but it still smells so good. The sandwiches are amazing and they're only £3. So sorry for the little oinker that's on the barby, but so happy for my tummy.
