While visiting Terre Haute, the first park I visited was Deming Park, and I knew I would return…read more The park has multiple amenities, including a full disc golf course, a swimming pool (during season), horse shoes, tennis, the Clark-Landsbaum Holly Arboretum, several art installations, a mini train "the Spirit of Terre Haute", and, oh yeah, a very cool playground. There are 177 acres at this park and that allows visitors to find quiet places as well as the hustle/bustle of the playground area. Shelters are available throughout the park and with many paved roads winding through the park, access to the shelters is easy. The playground was busy with families playing on the multiple pieces of equipment. I liked that there was plenty of shade close to the playground and that the picnic tables have roofs on them. During the season, a mini-train ride is available for a small fee. Just look for the colorful mural by Becky Hochhalter painted on the train shelter to know where to board. (Tickets are available at the nearby Torner Center during the season). There is also a nice garden near the playground entrance called "Jackie's Garden". It features a bronze sculpture of a seated little girl who is watching butterflies. The arboretum is a plant garden dedicated to preserving the varieties of holly. The entire hillside is covered with mature plants and each has been identified with markers to assist visitors. Nearby, a 14' tall stainless steel sculpture called "On the Wings of Flight" by Simonis (2015) can be found too! There is a train that goes around a small track for $1.25 each passenger close to the playground. Haven't checked out the restrooms for cleanliness but they have them here and a water fountain in case you forgot to pack drinks. Lots of covered picnic benches great for a family picnic. There Is a community pool open in the summer close to the playground too. It's $2.75 for kids and $3 for adults. They have a diving board and water splash area for the younger ones. I wasn't able to see if the pool has a baby pool as it's not open until noon.

It was reimagined almost 10 years ago in 2014. There is free street parking available for the park and you could also park in the Bauer Family Center lot, which it sits behind. The park is not very big and has a decent full basketball court, a shelter with picnic tables under it, and a a couple of playgrounds. There is fitness equipment there, but it looks to be in fair condition, and thats generous. There are two playground areas here. They are both on the rubbery mat surface that are popping up at most new parks. There is an area for smaller kids that is fenced in and has a jungle gym with a tiny bridge, and some slides. There is also a low hanging swing there and a metal bench for caregivers to sit and watch the littles play. The other playground area, for bigger kids, has a bank of traditional/toddler swings. This area features a monstrous jungle gym contraption over there. As well as a stand up see-saw, and seat spinners. The equipment seems relatively new and is in great repair. The park has a hole seems to be well maintained and was clean. There is a fence around the entire park's perimeter. Other park amenities include a shower, which I found random, a glider swing, a share a book kiosk, and some benches (the Buddy Bench). This is not a destination park, but is a very nice community park that is nestled in a small neighborhood.

There are distinct playgrounds for different age groups and on the older kid side, there is a basketball court too. Parking is limited to street parking for the park visitors, but there is a lot for the Bauer Family Center if visiting both places. I was able to street park on Fountain St without any problems. There is also a small shelter area for shade since the trees on the property are on the perimeter and don't offer much shade to the playground. Note that the Bauer and other neighborhood buildings have murals that add fun backdrops to the playgrounds. Review #1086

The folks who live there have a fairly new park that has a combination of sports and playground equipment for kids to use. There is a nice parking lot on the southwest corner. To the east is a fair sized shelter with a picnic table and a grill. Down the hill to the north are a basketball court and a baseball field. Between the basketball and the parking lot is a bright and unique playground. There are lots of large animal shapes and even a few dinosaurs for kids to climb on. The rest of the equipment serves the same function of lots of other playground equipment in other parks, but these pieces look unique and might make for a little bit more excitement from kids given the chance to play here. The negative is that there is very limited shade outside of the shelter probably due to the park being so new. Maybe they should plant a few trees around the playground to solve that problem down the road. Review #1070

You will definitely need a fishing license to fish here. With every nature park, there is some green space to play filed activities such as soccer, football, catch, kite flying or other activities. This park is no exception. There is a decent amount of green space by the playground area. Some of the shelters are in desperate need of repair though. A couple has sections of the roof collapsing in. There is a small playground at this park with older traditional equipment laid on a wood chip bed. Some of the playground equipment includes a some traditional and toddler swings, A tall spiral slide, a decent sized jungle gym with slides, a see-saw, and a large truck tire. It has benches and picnic tables on the perimeter of the area where parents can sit and watch their littles. There are a couple of small accessible piers on the lake that you can walk out on. They do not go too deep into the lake. I would say about 10 to 15 feet from shore. You will find a nature center and Native American Museum here at the park, along with some awesome wooded trails. It you are not feeling adventurous and are intimidated by the wood trail, you can just walk around the lake. I saw a bunch of people doing that while I was there. Additionally, there is a nice bike/running trail that goes past the front of the park. All in all, there are approximately 3 miles of trails which will take you past restored wetlands, through pine woods, old growth and second growth forest as well as a 25 acre State Nature Preserve. With visits to the Nature Center, native American Museum, Lake, playground and trails, you could easily spend a half a day or more here. I wish that the playground area was a little bit more robust, but it will do. This park has a peaceful vibe and is very relaxing. It is a destination park and hopefully you will get to visit it in the near future.

This park is about 1.5 miles from the home of Ernie Pyle, the famed reporter from World War II. The park isn't like the rest areas you see along the interstate. It doesn't have food vending machines. But it does have a small playground, a shelter, and restrooms. There is a memorial to Ernie Pyle to the left of the gravel parking area. There is also a covered bridge which was preserved by relocating it to this park. There isn't a lot to do, but it does offer a place to get out of the car and walk about to stretch your limbs. This is another great little park that serves the community…read more I'm guessing that the park is about 5 acres of mostly green space with a charming upscale small playground in the center. The green space has a cement walking trail that goes around perimeter to walk dogs or push strollers or wheel chairs. There were numerous birds out during our morning visit with our granddaughter. Nice benches line the walkway. There are dog stations for pet owners to clean up after their dogs. The green space can probably be used for soccer or football practice. The playground is really nice with a climbing and play structures that are ideal for 3-7 year olds. There is a really nice little "zip" line for the kids as well. The swing sets have infant seats and special needs seats that are covered by a shaded awning. There is a soft astroturf under the structures to cushion the kid's falls. There are three covered benches to watch the kids on the playground, but they could use a few more for us grandparents. Parking is a little unusual with a single one-way parallel parking lot on the east side of the park. There is bike parking as well. There are no restroom facilities (as the other parks have in Whitestown). My granddaughter had a blast and played for over an hour. Bring some water snacks and sunscreen for the kids.

This is one of the best parks I've visited in central Indiana, and if you look at my Yelp review…read morehistory, you'll see I've visited a lot of parks! This lady knows her parks, mmmkay? Hummel Park in Plainfield is impressive for many reasons: it's huge (205 acres!), it has multiple playgrounds (like 4!), it has a splash pad, it has a baseball field and basketball courts, it has a great area to creek stomp with lots of shallow places for kids to wade, it has paved walking trails, it has a bridge, it has a amphitheater, it has clean restrooms, and a lot more that I'm forgetting. Also, it's really clean and well-taken-care-of. People with kids definitely need to visit this park. Like I said, there are four different playgrounds, so you could spend a lot of time here going from playground to another. The biggest playground area is located in the southeast part of the park. This playground includes a vintage twirly slide, but also a more modern playground structure with multiple slides, tunnels, bridges, monkey bars, poles to slide down and rope ladders to climb up. The playground is accessible to kids of all abilities, and includes a ramp entrance into the playground structure. This part of the park also has swings, including a saucer swing, as well as a separate playground for toddlers, and a big sand box. The splash pad is located in this area of the park, too. It's a great size for toddlers. I wouldn't visit this park just for the splash pad, because there are other parks in the area with bigger splash pads, but it's nice that there's one here and that it's so close to the playground. There is another playground near the performing arts center, which includes a toddler playground and a playground for bigger kids. A short walk away from this playground is a nature playground, with manufactured boulders and rope webs that kids can climb and explore. Paved trails offer an easy walk or stroll. As you meander through the park, you'll probably cross over a bridge that's suspended over White Lick Creek, which runs through the middle of this park, and it flows from the north part of the park to the south part. There are five small lakes within Hummel Park, including Blue Heron Lake. Hummel Park is also a great place to go creek stomping, because the creek bed includes many shallow areas where kids can wade in the water. I've heard that the sledding hill at Hummel Park is amazing, so I'll have to visit in the winter with my kids.
