One ongoing event that's definitely worth checking out is the Tuesday Dinner & Movie night. For $15, you get a candlelit dinner (catered by Scanoli's Cajun and BBQ Restaurant, across the street) and a classic movie. These days, the movie alone would cost you $10! And that means that the $5-dinner, already very good on the palate, was also quite gentle on the wallet. They also show Monday night football on the big screen. Moreover, for most of these events, the bar is open, which means you can enjoy a drink while you watch the movie. Tell me, where else in the US can you do that! I'm sure such places exist, but they're few and far between. For what it's worth, you can also rent out the space for events such as receptions and weddings. I haven't yet been there for something like that. But if it's handled anywhere near as well as the movie night, I'm already a fan.

There is a…read morereally well designed parking and landscaped area that looks nice, but basically, this is 30+ acres of lawn surrounded by "natural" (unmowed) property. They have added a central facility that I read acts as a restroom for the park, but it looks rather small if they ever have a lot of teams playing at once. The website mentions that there is supposed to be a playground and basketball court, but I couldn't find them from the parking lot. I even checked the satellite images and couldn't find either amenity. Unless the images are really old, they don't exist. I also checked the website and the pdf map of the park only shows six of the fields and no playground/basketball. Something is not making sense and that makes me disappointed with what I found. Unfortunately there is very little shade so your car ends up roasting under the sun. The place could definitely use with some nice green trees to provide natural shade. Restrooms: off to the left you'll see a brown, wooden construction which has male and female restrooms. I went into the female one and almost ran back out. There were two stalls but with no doors. Completely infested with mosquitoes (no joke) and just overall really filthy. I would highly advise against using them unless you are absolutely desperate. If you keep walking past the restrooms you'll see a narrow trail that leads to the creek. The creek is nice and the water is pretty shallow in most places. Good picnic spot, or a place to bring kids, or just hang out with friends/read a book.

The name McCaw is really used for two parks that are adjacent to each other. One is a standard…read morepark with playgrounds, a shelter, and multiple pickleball courts. The other is a baseball complex next door. They have separate entrances which is a shame if you want to visit both. (I suppose it keeps traffic around all the toddlers reduced for safety.) The baseball has lots of parking and diamonds for games. There are some facilities for the public convenience as well. The park is really cool and has one of the brightest and most loaded playgrounds I've seen in my travels. Underneath the equipment is one of those spongy shock absorbing materials that is kind of fun to walk on all by itself! There is a single entrance to the playground area, so it could get congested if cross traffic is heavy. The park is also host to a large number of pickleball courts. The sad thing is that they look like they either need attention or are undergoing some construction. I did not see a single court with a net in place, so that makes playing quite impractical. Hopefully, they will get the courts back in shape soon and make this a 5 star location. Review #1074

It was reimagined almost 10 years ago in 2014. There is free street parking available for the park and you could also park in the Bauer Family Center lot, which it sits behind. The park is not very big and has a decent full basketball court, a shelter with picnic tables under it, and a a couple of playgrounds. There is fitness equipment there, but it looks to be in fair condition, and thats generous. There are two playground areas here. They are both on the rubbery mat surface that are popping up at most new parks. There is an area for smaller kids that is fenced in and has a jungle gym with a tiny bridge, and some slides. There is also a low hanging swing there and a metal bench for caregivers to sit and watch the littles play. The other playground area, for bigger kids, has a bank of traditional/toddler swings. This area features a monstrous jungle gym contraption over there. As well as a stand up see-saw, and seat spinners. The equipment seems relatively new and is in great repair. The park has a hole seems to be well maintained and was clean. There is a fence around the entire park's perimeter. Other park amenities include a shower, which I found random, a glider swing, a share a book kiosk, and some benches (the Buddy Bench). This is not a destination park, but is a very nice community park that is nestled in a small neighborhood.

There are distinct playgrounds for different age groups and on the older kid side, there is a basketball court too. Parking is limited to street parking for the park visitors, but there is a lot for the Bauer Family Center if visiting both places. I was able to street park on Fountain St without any problems. There is also a small shelter area for shade since the trees on the property are on the perimeter and don't offer much shade to the playground. Note that the Bauer and other neighborhood buildings have murals that add fun backdrops to the playgrounds. Review #1086

Southwest of Lafayette is the new town of Shadeland (it still has a Lafayette mailing address…read morethough). The folks who live there have a fairly new park that has a combination of sports and playground equipment for kids to use. There is a nice parking lot on the southwest corner. To the east is a fair sized shelter with a picnic table and a grill. Down the hill to the north are a basketball court and a baseball field. Between the basketball and the parking lot is a bright and unique playground. There are lots of large animal shapes and even a few dinosaurs for kids to climb on. The rest of the equipment serves the same function of lots of other playground equipment in other parks, but these pieces look unique and might make for a little bit more excitement from kids given the chance to play here. The negative is that there is very limited shade outside of the shelter probably due to the park being so new. Maybe they should plant a few trees around the playground to solve that problem down the road. Review #1070

This controversial mural is the work of The Droops, an Indianapolis-based artist collective who…read morewere commissioned by The Spot to do the piece in 2015. It located on the side of the Spot and overlooks their parking lot. It takes up 2 sections of the bar's side wall. The mural is in great shape but as you can see in the photos, its lower park is obstructed by parked vehicles. It is a collogue of random images that include a guillotine, a beer on a folding chair, a tombstone, a skull, a in a bikini with four eyes holding a beer up, a knife, a clown, a bomb, a trumpet, a cigarette butt, a foot, a face being punched by a fist, a hand holding a knife, and an odd character holding a beer while playing a piano. The mural also depicts a naked woman tied to a tree and male genitalia in between a hotdog bun, which caused quite a site as you can imagine. There were calls by the community to have the offensive piece removed, covered up or fenced off. The change.org petition ended with 20 supporters. At one point the Lafayette police issued a warning that artwork was violation of the city's graffiti ordinance. There was a point during all of this that they used a Mike Pence head (who was governor at the time) to cover the male genitalia. Ultimately, the Spot won and the city decided that the mural was not graffiti and did not meet the criteria for a citation. The mural is standing today. Even though there are a lot of images to digest. The artwork is very nice. This is a provocative piece that definitely generates conversation. You can deiced for yourself what your thoughts on the piece are. Parking to get a closer look at the mural is easy, even though it overlooks a parking lot, the lot is kind of tight. There is however, some free parking pretty close to the mural too. Anyway, as with most murals that I have visited and reviewed, this is not a long stop. I was there less than 5 minutes. So, you may want to consider planning out additional stops at many of the other attractions in the area, or making this stop part of a larger itinerary to maximize your time and trip. There of tons of murals to check out in the immediate area.

On weekends it can get packed and they open up the dance area with loud music. The vibe is still good, just a lot more going on. So, on Wednesday afternoons, a Farmer's Market sets up booths to take advantage of the space! The park also has a couple basketball courts, a large shelter with picnic tables, and a new sculpture at the entrance called "Rooster" to welcome the visitors coming for the Farmer's Market. The park also has a community flower garden that adds a bit of color to the park. Overall, it seemed to be maintained well and had plenty of room for further development. Review #1140
