I went here based on other yelp reviews while headed to Galena. The first word I can think of to…read moredescribe this place is "musty" and the ambiance is lacking. However, the bartenders were both very nice and the cheeseburger was decent and very reasonable that came with not homemade chips. The Italian beef on special was ok. It is not the kind of place to make a destination place for lunch or dinner but rather a beer place.

We stopped in here before going to see a movie back in November. They were part of a burger…read morechallenge that was happening in Stephenson County, my girl friend's youngest son recommended the place, plus it is located directly across from the theater. It was decided that Morts & Saint's was going to be our dining experience for the night. Upon arrival the place came across as a total dive bar. Don't get me wrong, I love dive bars, they have some of the best food and the locals usually are willing to bend your ear with tales about the town. The seating area was small, only a handful of tables and the bar. We had a group of 6, which meant we had to take up two tables. That's not an issue for us, but keep in mind it's not good for groups. Let's just get to the brass tacks of this review. I don't recommend Morts & Saint's. The first thing I noticed is that the cooking area is behind the counter where you can see everything the cook does, I mean EVERYTHING... Like most dive bars the place could use some repairs... and cleaning. A lot of cleaning. From the looks of the signs, clocks, decorations, etc... The internet may still have been dial up the last time someone cleaned it thoroughly. Everyone of us ordered burgers, I watched as the cook pulled the frozen patties out of the chest freezer next to the flat top and put them on with his bare hands, no gloves... no washing... handling other food items, then doing other tasks, only to go back to food handling again.... Multiple times. The burgers were frozen patties thrown on grill... no thawing, no seasoning... just on the grill that moments before was used to prepare something else. I had the Lena Rae burger, I others ordered the Mort Burger, the Flamin' Mort, and a Swiss Mushroom. Honestly, the best part of the burger was Chips that came with them. The burger itself was mediocre at best. How people are saying this is the best burger in town is beyond me. Honestly, they only thing I can say positive about the burger is that for the price, it's not bad. Each burger at the time we went was between $6 to $8. It's not a bad burger, it's just painfully average. However, if they keep their prices like that, I can see how it will attract people. If you enjoy a good dive bar, you don't want to spend money, and you feel like risking a good health code violation or two... Morts & Saint's is for you. ...oh and the service is what you expect. Local staff spending more time talking to regulars. Our waitress seemed to be more concerned with flirting with customers at the bar than taking orders, filling drinks, bringing us a check, etc.

Checked out this brewery in Freeport after coming across other places that had their beers…read more Generations is one of the main reasons to come here. It certainly has quite a few things on tap. A lot more in cans. They also have a few snacks. By the looks of the outside it wasn't anything special, just like a warehouse or something common. It's a lot more interesting inside. The taproom has enough room for the bar, and quite a few tables. Got a view into the back to see where the beers are made. There's a balcony where bands can play live music too. Beers are why people come of course. It's about $7 a pint. Best one we had of these was the Tawny Ale. This is an Irish Red of medium strength. It's about $12 for a soft pretzel. These are massive so they're great for sharing. One of the dips looked like peanut butter. This was actually fudge if you can believe it, and you can get cheese as well as mustard. For sure it's one of this city's main attractions. It's got lots of beers, and because it's in the Pretzel City, get one of those to munch on. They're closed Mondays and Tuesdays.

They have a variety of beers and one named after Freeport the Pretzel City! They have lagers, pilsners and ales. The environment is relaxing and the building stands out ! Since the main road is under construction , GPS did not help, but after we realized it kept rerouting us to the closed road. If in the area, stop in. Also their beer can be found in many locations in the Rockford area and some Binnys.

So there has always been a lot of hype around this restaurant in Freeport, and I was looking…read moreforward to taking my mother out for a nice meal. Our entire party was very disappointed. The food, while edible, was not up to par with the pricing. It's as if the restaurant wants to be high end, but doesn't quite hit the mark with the food. Our appetizer, baked Brie with apples, was served on a black plate that honestly, looked filthy. The rim of the plate was greasy and smudged all over. The Brie had some limp, mixed lettuce as a garnish (that should have been a clue as to the level of attention the kitchen pays to presentation). Further, there wasn't any melted Brie in there, but there was Brie rind. The onion mushroom soup was salty, and all the onions and mushrooms were invisible, having been pulverized into the broth. The servers brought the food out like they were dropping a book on the table. One of the salads ordered, was not delivered with the rest of the food- not sure if the waitress of the kitchen screwed that up. The drinks were okay- they were the only thing not sub-standard. I'm giving this 2 stars because the building interior is historic and beautiful, the chairs were comfortable, and the cocktails were fine. It would be a nice place to have pre-dinner cocktails, but I strongly suggest you go somewhere else for your dinner.
