That is not to say that they do not do pantomimes and accessible productions for all ages, but they are defintely catering for the higher brow market. The festival grounds are beautiful and there were several nice options for pre theater snacks and refreshments. But what blew us away was the gorgeous, intimate stage (the Minerva) and the high caliber of every performance. We had wondered if an excursion to Chichester from London would be worth it, and it ended up being the highlight of our trip. We will definitely include Chichester on our next trip to London.

The regular exhibits include the history of Portsmouth, art displays, Arthur Conan Doyle/Sherlock Holmes, life through the ages from a 17th century bedroom to a 1950's living room. It is worth keeping up to date on any special exhibits you might be interested in as the regular exhibits are not really worth visiting on their own repeatedly! The Records Office is in the same building and holds the official records of Portsmouth City Council from the 14th century! During school holidays lots of events such as magicians and story telling are held for the children mostly in a Marquee outside. There is a gift shop, small tea room, and toilet facilities, and of course entrance is free.

As it's on a small scale you get a real feeling of being involved with the performances as the actors do a great job of encouraging audience participation. It's very good value for money too when you compare the cost of taking a family to the larger theatres. My children have certainly told me that some of their favourite shows were ones we've seen at The Point. You have to park a fair way away in the Swan Centre as there is no car park so allow plenty of time to get parked if you are going to a show. The staff seem to be really friendly and enjoy their jobs.

It's a relatively new festival based on the Isle of Wight, so don't forget to include the cost of the ferry from Portsmouth in your fun budget, which can be pretty hefty for foot pasenger and downright extortionate for motor vehicles. Oh and bring a spare phone battery; you don't want to have to pay £5 for the privilege of half an hours leccy. There's some interesting camping options available: por ejlempo the yurts and tangerine fields: ready set up tents for those that don't fancy hauling a lot of cag from the car parks. Last year I saw some great acts: Beastie boys, The Chemical Brothers, The Levellers, Beth Ditto and Gregory Isaacs plus some excellent DJ sets in the dance tents (e.g. Pendulum). This year Winehouse has confirmed. It's kid friendly, full of cool spots and has a fantastic upbeat atmosphere - not a whiff of trouble; people are here to have fun!

This year they sold twice as many tickets as last year which was not matched with twice as many stages or attractions. The BBC stage stood out like a sore thumb and i cant help but think they tryed to maximise the prophets a little too much this year. I missed many acts I was hoping to see because the tents were simply too full, I had to steal glances at fellow bestivalites programmes to find out what was going on as I felt the pinch of 6 hard earned pounds on top of 140 for the ticket was too great. What Bestival does still have is an amazing eclectic mish mash of music, dance, art, vibes and atmosphere. Next year I hope the fesivals fun and crazy roots will over shadow the evil of the accountants who are now counting all my cash! Set in an unbelievable play park in the vallies of the Isle of White this thing is still so immense.

I have been to the Pyramids for gigs / events however. Its a big space, the sound is clear and the lighting rig well set out. The room used for the gigs is suitable for bands of all sizes. I was present at a New Years event a couple of years ago in the glass roofed room, and although the sound quality in there was slightly lacking, the space in the room made up for it!

Located side by side, The Pyramids Centre is generally referred to as a venue, as it receives plenty of attention from internationally famous bands including The Darkness, Fear Factory and Hundred Reasons. The venue is fair sized, and (surprisingly) carpeted, so it is more comfortable to sit down while you're waiting between support acts. The bar has an inconvenient wall opposite it preventing a view of the stage from the middle of the bar, but this encourages few barflies, and drinks are more easily accessible.
