Kipp Summit Academy is an amazing school! My son was lucky enough to have been selected in their lottery process for fifth grade. We tried getting my daughter into this school for the past four years without any luck. This is our son's first year there and he loves it so much. I read the other reviewers on yelp and I am shocked at their comments. I'm pretty sure that if you are unable to afford healthy snacks, and inform your child's teacher and school personnel, they will definitely be happy to accommodate. Advising students to bring healthy snacks has encouraged my son to read food labels and selecting healthier food. He loves learning about healthier choices and even encouraged me to eat healthier. Regarding parent involvement, studies show that children are more successful when parents are involved in the school--volunteer work. The fee for volunteer hours is there to encourage parents to participate and be active. Again, as accommodating as the principal and teachers have been for my family, I am pretty confident that they are understanding and will work with each family individually to help meet their needs. My son has a speech impediment and receives speech therapy ever since he was 3 years old. Transferring to Kipp Summit, we wanted to continue speech therapy. His speech therapist is Melodi F. She is an angel and very professional. Of all these years, the doctors and other speech pathologists (he has has four--kaiser, private, and school) and no one noticed that my son was challenged with hypo-nasality. However, during several weeks with Melodi, she texted me and called me to share her concerns and asked that I bring my son to see a specialist, which I did immediately. Turns out he also had sleep apnea, severe allergies in addition to his hypo-basaltic. Three surgeries were recommended--all of which we agreed to. My son has just gotten the surgeries about a week ago. The specialist stated that my son will sleep better, have more energy, be more alert, and his speech is highly likely going to improve as well! This is amazing and I'm so grateful that Melodi did her job so well and caught this for my son. Thank you so much, Melodi! Ms. Bun is my son's teacher. She is young, full of energy, and has a heart for teaching. I love the fact that my son trusts her so much! Teachers here provide parents and students with their work cell. Students can text or call from early in the morning until late evening. Ms. Bun has build such a rapport with my son that once he found out his surgery date, he contacted her via telephone at around 7am to inform her! I didn't even know about it until he advised me that I need not to inform her because he already did. He also disclosed to me that Ms. Bun comforted him and helped decrease his anxiety about the surgery hi sharing her experience of getting the same type of surgery in the past. Here the most touching part of the story, which made me want to cry. After he received the surgery at Kaiser Oakland and he was calm and alert again, he asked me to drive him to the school so he can see Ms. Bun and tell her that he was fine. I took him to the school, but she was teaching a lesson, plus he didn't have enough energy to walk to the class. I texted her instead to inform her about the surgery. She was happy everything went well. Also, my son doesn't like reading so much, but she has helped him find the love of reading by helping him find books that are interesting to him. His writing and reading has improved. He also likes Mr. Ng, his math teacher, very much. His math has also improved. read more

Horrible, I would enjoy more clean bathrooms too. PE is very very strict, almost like we're getting drafted to war. in the 6th grade we have too much homework. Honestly. I'm not sure why everyone wants to get into this school. Kipp summit academy is an absolute joke, don't ever go to this school. The condition of the school is absolutely horrendous. The school leaders are overly strict and they absolutely do not care about the students well being. They don't even care if you get hurt. For example, If you hurt your foot in sports or any other activity they will just send you to the office and tell you to sit there and call your parents they don't even want to help render aid to you. Teachers will treat you like you're a joke. Sometimes, the teachers or leaders will hold you in for recess for the slightest things. Some student are sad and depressed but the school doesn't want to help them. Most kids in the school don't want to be in the school because of the amount of homework they give out. read more

I don't understand why so many people try to get into this school. The leadership team is a joke and treat the kids like kindergarteners, and the administration team is a joke, especially Barbara Navarrette. I've never dealt with anyone so full of themself and rude to parents and staff. The only person there that is an asset is Mr. Montano. The high school staff is a complete 180. Okay. So this is an honest review about this school from one of the later students. Now this is just my opinion, but this school has honestly made me the MOST depressed and anxious due to the amount of homework and schoolwork this school gives us. And some students need rest, some people aren't even getting enough sleep from the schoolwork they are getting. That is why they are sleepy all day and has bad grades, and honestly are gonna make their mental health worse. Okay, before you jump at me. Middle school is the most common year where you have the most mental health problems and the most drama, A lot of students teased me at this school about calling me Nick names I HATED and despised. And jokes about autism, and to be honest Its not that funny to joke about autism because It's a development disorder AND you cannot expect someone you know directly that has autism because that is kinda rude in my opinion. I have been relating to a lot of people and one comment on this school, and I completely agree with the "harming themselves" part, because I threatened myself to do it as well too, but I ended up not doing it because I know I am worthy and just like everyone else. But I might as well just stop yapping now because uhm yeah. Kipp Summit Academy has already had a lot of bad reviews, but most of these reviews are relatable to what has happened to all of my friends from this school. I have a relative and a lot of friends attending this school, but due the pressure and false accusations they have dealt with, they considered harming themselves multiple times, which made me worried everyday, young students are still growing their minds and are experiencing this, which can cause them to have trauma and mental illnesses. A school like this shouldn't be allowed at all. My friends is still considering harming themselves due to how the school staffs are treating them. Also, from what Im hearing, the school is having students not have any recess. Not only will they feel imprisoned, they will feel powerless and make them feel like they have no freedom whatsoever. Less time to socialize with anyone, to only sit and wait for recess to end. This has affected my friends and can affect other students as well. read more

Cada quien habla de su experiencia y la mía en esta escuela a sido muy buena, especialmente cuando se trata de mi hijo autista, el programa que tienen nos a gustado mucho y la atención que él recibe es excelente, la maestra Ms Torres y los asistentes son muy apasionados por su profesión y celosos de su trabajo, la empatía es una de sus cualidades, siempre manteniéndonos al pendiente de las actividades, situaciones que llegan a pasar, de los cambios de humor o comportamientos de nuestro hijo. No fue necesario esperar a que terminara el año escolar para ver el crecimiento que mi hijo a tenido en esta escuela, desde los primeros meses notamos el cambio. Lo han incluido en algunos programas haciéndolo el primer alumno con necesidades especiales en asistir a estos programas de verano y Lego robotics. Con mi hija que apenas se gradúo tuvimos buenos y malos momentos pero siempre buscando una solución junto con los maestros y el staff, no todo en la vida es color de rosa y nadie es perfecto, lo más importante aquí es que ciertos maestros y miembros de la escuela han hecho buenos cambios y eso es algo positivo ya que el reconocer errores es de sabios y habla de la humildad de cada uno. read more

Kipp is a horrible school. I thought I would experience with a better school that cares a lot about their students but I guess I was wrong. Never in my life I have had to experience with horrible teachers. The only staff I really like is Mr Montono. He is the school Janitor and he has done more work the the teachers themselves. He has also worked during the summer to keep the school as clean and safe as possible. I would consider this school a better place if they kept generation. Generation the after school program, was the only thing I looked forward to during the school years even if though I joined late. It made me happy and because of the teachers at generation, I was able to smile at least one time. Now that it's official that the after school program will be tutoring I'm not looking forward to it. I hate this place I would rather stay with generation and learn to play instruments and have fun then do more work as if we didn't do it for hours. This place is garbage, the school allowed my children to be bullied until the point of self harm. The school is poor and spends so little money on stuff for students. By far the worst school I've ever been to. The roof is falling off in some classes and the bathrooms are so cheap and dirty. I can not believe a school can be so horrendous. If your student or students have special needs don't go here, teachers and administration are very stubborn when it comes to approving any type of help for the kids, then blame for the illnesses. The staff is unresourceful and the princapal is not present, rude, and not open to listening or any patience what so ever. The staff is also not informed, and seem to not have a clue about diagnosis or special needs laws, policies, or regulations and will try to distract you from a better education which is not at this school. They refuse to make assessments without having any of the information needed and pass it around to the next staff member. If you believe in education, need compassion, and want you and your child or children to be respected, don't enroll student here. read more

If you want teachers to work their asses off for your child, then get your child into this school. You will see a jump in their reading levels and an acceleration in their math abilities. Working as a KIPP teacher had been the toughest job, and I am deeply grateful for the learning I had encountered personally and professionally from working with an amazing staff every year. My son is a new student at KIPP summit. So far my son says he likes attending KIPP. Their first full day starts on August 26th 7:30-3:45pm until then, students are on a half day schedule. 7:30am-11:45am. KIPP has long school hours for the kids.(I'm not sure if I like the hours yet, too early to tell) I wanted to sign my son up for the after school program that's over at 6pm. At 6pm no thank you. There's a $100 fee to have your student in the program and the student must attend even on half days. Really, really! So far as a parent. I like their college focus. The uniforms are ok. The few staff members that I met are nice and I hope they can keep that nice attitude through out the year. My son has come home stressed about what he takes for snack/lunch, he says the staff continues to announce to the students about bringing healthy snack/lunch. Which I understand but as a parent my son is going bring what I have and can afford. If KIPP wants healthy snacks/lunch for the students then they should provide the "healthy snack/lunch." Don't make the students feel bad because of what they bring from home and what parents can afford to send their kids to school with. The morning drop off is "Ugly!" I feel a better system should be implemented! Horrible system needs improvement! Thankful to my neighbors whom help to pick up our boys after school. KIPP has a lot of open field they need to use their space wisely so drop/pick up will be more efficient and flow better! Also, I didn't know anything about volunteer hours until the first half day when I dropped off my son. KIPP wants parents to volunteer 20 hours a month or buy supplies or pay $10.00 for each hour to fullfil the volunteer hours. The whole process to get into KIPP; this volunteer info was not given but I'm ok with it. I just don't like surprises. Like I said it's the beginning of the new school year I'll give one star to KIPP for now and hopefully I'll see some improvement throughout the year and I can give more stars.
