Kip's Toyland is such a cute little toy store at the Original Farmers Market that is so classic LA. I say this because it's been open since 1945 and even has a Wikipedia page! It's actually the oldest toy store in Los Angeles. I absolutely support kids playing with real toys over devices! Long live the toy stores that are family-owned! I had popped in here and there over the years, but recently stopped in more because they have Nee-Doh! Iykyk but my nieces & nephews around 5-11 LOVE that stuff and it is so hard to find. I've bought it here a few different times now at their reasonable prices ~ but it sells out VERY fast! So bizzare how these trends take hold of the youth, but thankful Kip's Toyland keeps a rotating stock of it. They have so many cool items here and I just love shipping for my friend's kids here! I was so excited to bring my BF into Kip's toys on Saturday since he had never been to the original Farmers Market. Kips has been here since 1945 and they have legend status in the toy world. I love all of the retro Barbie dolls that are so beautifully organized! I also love the prank section and I couldn't resist buying a whoppie cushion and a hand buzzer. Haha The store is small but neatly packed with the best collection of 70's-current toys and board games, etc. it's a fantastic way to spend an hour and all of your money! read more

Kip's Toyland was established in 1945. I really wanted to give this shop 5 stars, but the prices are so steep. I can imagine it must be expensive paying rent for a stall in a very famous market. So I can understand why the prices are so high. It's really cool to see a mom and pop type business still in operation today, but the prices are astronomically high. I will say I really like how they curated all the different types of toys. You saw a lot of different kinds of toys from other eras which made it very nostalgic for me. read more

This is a very nice toy store with a wide variety of toys, but their website is in dire need of an update since it still has the stupid COVID-19 policy on it and does not show what toys are in stock and when they are in stock. There is some cool stuff in here and I generally vouch for keeping toy stores alive. However it's pretty obvious stuff here is overpriced just by a once-over. I understand times are tough and this is prime real estate, but if it's super apparent I can just go to another store and buy the same exact product for half the cost, you're doing something wrong. Basically as a customer, I'm buying from you only to keep your store from shutting down from lack of business. That is the only thought process that makes sense to "justify" the price. Ty products for example are not rare, so a little stuffed animal shouldn't (and doesn't) cost ten to twenty bucks. They're literally at the gas station. Same with puzzles. This mostly serves as a fun store to cruise while at the Farmers Market to get gift ideas for what to buy cheaper elsewhere. read more

I enjoyed shopping here, as it brought back many memories of childhood, similar to receiving the Sears catalog of toys each Christmas. The toys are not really expensive, but are from the major brands, such as Brio, Mattel, and other vendors. The size of the store is rather small and quaint, with a beautiful storefront along the parking lot. I ended up buying an etch-a-sketch , Nerf Ball and dinosaur for my grandson, which seemed to be some of the toys he would gravitate towards. I found this toy store by watching the Channel 5 news and the local events happening around Los Angeles. Since it's near Christmas, I felt this was a good time to check it out! read more

Cute toy store at the Farmer's Market! If you check out the area, pop in, the store is cool, like a visit back in time. They carry old school toys that bring nostalgia to some people. I didn't grow in US so for me it's fun to discover them. A quick cultural lesson that I needed to catch up on. It's a great store to get gifts for kids, and get creative. Or bring back a cool souvenir or a fun gift if you visit the area and check out stores inside the Original Farmer's Market. My husband got me here a rubik's cube because everyone needs one, right? Kip's Toyland is a lovely little toy store in the Farmers Market, where you might find yourself walking around with your very cute child, thinking, "This little boy deserves a treat." We went in for the first time last month after a disappointing visit to the pumpkin patch, and instead of getting a hundred adorable photos of him surrounded by pumpkins, we left the Farmers Market with a couple great toys. There was a large, varied selection of high quality toys and we took our time browsing the age-appropriate options (our kid is under two). He's into our iPhones and Wheels on the Bus, so we picked up a toy smartphone and a toy school bus. Checkout was quick and easy. The prices were on the higher side, but honestly, I can only imagine what rent is like in the Farmers Market, and I'd like this place to stick around. Our baby loves his big yellow bus and chatty musical toy phone (one of those toys I wouldn't get for other parents, in case they don't want to hear all the things it sings when their kid presses every single number over and over again). My little one loves this toy store , it has to be our first stop anytime we go to The Grove. Yeah it can be a little pricey and he always gets the same things , these little racer cars. This toy store is one of those places that is better to browse than to buy since it's very pricey compared to Toys 'R Us and Target. The items are sold at their retail price. There are board games, stuffed animals, and many Playmobil toys. It's smaller than Puzzle Zoo in both selection and size. I guess I would called this a last resort toy store. The last resort scenarios include the following: 1. If you want to make your kid happy if the lovely produce at the Farmer's Market or Bennett's ice cream won't suffice. 2. You want to buy something for you son since you spent more than enough at American Girl for your daughter. 3. You just so happen to be at Fairfax and 3rd and need to buy a present. I am example #3. I bought a cute Melissa & Doug pirate puzzle that I have been eyeing online. However, I didn't to pay for shipping costs and needed it in time for my nephew's birthday. It was glad I found it here. There was no enthusiasm in the staff nor were they rude. Overall, it serves the minimum purpose of small toy store. read more

came here to buy a board game and was made very uncomfortable by a belligerent, clearly drunk customer whom the employees allowed to harass every single person walking in, including a family with a small child. He followed my friend and I around the store, swearing profusely, and became aggressively upset when we tried to leave. He demanded I try on a hand puppet he had been holding and, when I kindly refused, continued to follow me while raising his voice as the employees stood there and watched. Kips has their side door locked so we couldn't escape that way and had to instead circle back and walk past this man who had moved in to harass another customer. I can't imagine how this situation would make a child feel, and because of that I highly encourage anyone to avoid this unsafe environment. read more

There are three can't-miss activities my almost 4-year-old daughter must experience when we hit the Farmer's Market/The Grove: a ride to nowhere on the loopy trolley, a stroll through American Girl Place with her slave doll Addie, and a mad dash to Kip's Toyland. We don't even have to buy anything at Kip's. She just likes poking around in the atmosphere. It is a oddly comforting trip back to the '50s, even though neither one of us was around back then. As a general rule, I'm not one to make impulse buys, so if my daughter really does appear to love something in a store, I like to tell her I'll think about it and maybe come back later. But that regimen ends in tears when it comes to Kip's. You return a few days later with your happy, expectant preschooler, and that cool toy is most likely gone from this mom-and-pop establishment. Just gone, off the shelf and not replaced, the prize of a marauding tourist who figures she won't find that unique item in her hometown. And she's probably right. Then you have to shove around in those tiny aisles and find something else -- that you wish you'd had the time to think about before buying, but now you lost that privilege in your sniffling kid's eyes. On second thought, maybe you shoud just stay away from Kip's. Oh, and the Sticker Store. No self-respecting preschooler or her crafting mother can walk out of there empty handed. read more

Buyer beware: The true measure of customer service is how problems are handled. And this place did not measure up. You'd better hope there's no issue with any of your purchases here. My wife and I were shocked and dismayed at the owner's reaction to a pretty small problem: Visiting the store for the first time, we buy some gifts at Kip's for two toddlers' birthday party. Parents inform us that the kids already have all of the same gifts and didn't need any more (not EXACTLY the same, but same type: plush toys, play-do, bath toy. This is important later.). They politely suggested we return the gifts so no one's space or money is wasted. We go back to Kip's the same day, and ask if we can return the items. Employee tells us "store credit only". We ask if an exception can be made (the gifts were unopened and purchased two hours before). He tells us to leave the merchandise and to call management on Monday about a refund. Wife calls management on Monday. Management repeats "store credit only" and that she would have to PHYSICALLY come in the store to get the credit. Wife informs management that she doesn't live near the store, so she can't come in. Management refers to owner. Wife emails owner politely asking for an exception to the policy. Owner replies to her email insinuating she's a liar: how could the kids have already received EVERY ITEM in our purchase? [Well, they weren't EXACTLY the same items...see above]. But, he replied that in the interest of "good community relations", he'd make an exception. My wife thanks him politely, ignoring his insinuation. He returns with "Please do not shop here again." Holy escalation, Batman! Thing is, we would've taken the store credit--and shopped here again--if the employee had not told us to leave the merchandise and call on Monday for a refund. We could've used it for some upcoming birthdays. Why didn't the management offer to mail the store credit ticket? A customer's not worth a stamp? All this unnecessary enmity and accusation was for $50 worth of merchandise. So, here's my takeaway: judging by the other reviews, this place is great, albeit pricey, if you don't have any issues with your purchases. If there's a problem, expect it to be handled poorly. Caveat emptor. PS: If you're like me and your blood boils with righteous fury at terrible customer service, here's a copy-paste of the email exchange: [Owner's response to my wife's polite request for an exception:] Good Morning, I find it remarkable that the child you were giving the gifts to already had everything you selected.  I have heard many reasons for returns over the years, but this is truly remarkable.   While there does appear to me some miscommunication, our policy is quite clear and prominently posted in plain view.  Further, due to health department guidelines we never accept plush in return.   The above notwithstanding, and in the spirit of good community relations, we will grant your refund.  How did you want me to process it? Wife's response: Thanks, we appreciate it. If you could return the funds to the credit card used to purchase the gifts that would be great. If you need me to call you with that credit card number let me know and I will do so today.  Owner's response: To process the return I will need:                 Name on the card                 Card number                 Billing address                 Expiration date                 CVV                 Amount of the sale                  Please do not shop here again. Update: Owner emailed me back after I gave him the what-for for being so unnecessarily nasty to my wife, and CHARGING US AGAIN for the same purchase instead of refunding the money. No apology (for this OR his employee's mistake of telling us we could call during the week for a refund), no attempt to make things better. Just that he made a "mistake" trying to accommodate us, that he was "tired of my excuses", and to "leave him alone". A small toy store with narrow aisles. It felt much like a KB Toys you would find at the mall back in the day, but more on an independent toy shop level. What I mean is, it has some of the same, kinds of toys I would see in KB Toys; board games, magic tricks, model train sets, NERF Super Soakers, Hot Wheels and more. Hardly any dolls or action figures. In order for my interest to be sparked in a toy store, I have to be exposed to a cornucopia of playthings. I guess I was just hoping for more of a variety. It may be more of a hobby enthusiast's playground with some modern toys and collectables thrown in. Customer service here is fabulous--2 guys at the counter greeted us upon walking in and another associate approached us in the aisle asking if we needed help with anything. Great store! A lot of interesting toys that are hard to find in places like Toys-R-Us or Target (or maybe I didn't search good enough). The store offers number of toys that are entertaining, educational, fun, collectibles and just cute.. Of Entertaining ones you might like those Muppet-Show style hand-on "talking" characters. Great quality, exactly like in the shows; Of Educational there are Lego, puzzles, board games; Of Collectibles: comic book figurines, miniature car replicas; Of Fun: remote-controlled cars, super-hero masks, latex snakes; Of the Cute category I'd love to highlight Hello-Kitty soft toys. They are SO CUTE! :) In the front you might acquire Hollywood souvenirs, like star-magnets or lic plates with your name. Of negative part - prices. Those are high. Voted best toy store by Los Angeles Magazine in 2007. I didn't leave disappointed. My son has far out grown the age of most simple toys so it isn't often I find myself in toy stores but I stopped in here to look for a birthday gift. Great selection of toys and games. I picked up one of my favs Mad Libs and a super golf ball for my brother. Tons of awesome gifts and toys for all ages. I'm now totally in the know about Melissa & Doug children toys and Kip's has a good selection of these and just about anything else you may be looking for (Slinky's, safe boxes, classic Fisher Price, made in the USA toys, swimming pool inflatables, puzzles, board games, etc). I've been coming here since I was a kid. It changed locations from one side of Farmer's Market to the other but it still has the same small town flavor. In a city of things constantly changing and short term memories, it is nice to think that the toy store I used to hang out in after school still exists with mostly the same staff and owner. I bought all my Mad Libs, Action Figures and practical jokes here. They also have old fashioned wooden toys, minitures and various games. My mom still likes to tell people this story about my grandmother. She flirted with Kip a little bit to convince him to sell her the last remaining Castle Greyskull. This year I am attempting to purchase holiday gifts from local stores near my loved ones. I live in PA and have two nephews in CA. I called Kip's to see if they would help me select gifts for my nephews and ship them locally. Kip's was incredible! Right next to the clock tower/parking lot, this boutique shop is plastered with toys from PlayMobil and Melissa & Doug. It is managed by Tina a lovely, long time employee and Irvin Kipper, the owner. As others have noted-unenthusiastic bordering on rude service. I worked in the consumer prods industry a long time. When the sales clerk helped me with an etch a sketch he suspiciously shuffled through the 5 or so on the shelf looking for something. When I got home and gave it to my daughter she opened it and it did not work. Upon closer inspection of the packaging I noticed scotch tape not factory seal and bad shop-worn edges on the box. If the clerk had to rifle through and examine the entire inventory to choose what he felt comfortable selling than what condition were the other units in? Obvious scam outlet selling refurbished and repackaged goods.
