I visited Dr. Mackey on March 3 with leg/back pain, and had a follow up appointment the next week. Two days later she called to let me know she'd tested positive for COVID on the same day as my follow up, and she made it clear that a) she'd only taken a test because she'd been planning a trip to Hawaii, and b) she was only informing her close contacts because she was required to by law. She attempted to soft-pedal the news by saying she'd taken a (notoriously unreliable) rapid test that morning, which was negative, and that she doubted she actually had COVID because she didn't personally know anyone who was infected. The overall tone of this call was that none of this was a big deal. Unfortunately, it was a big deal for me. I had friends staying with me that week, and none of us were vaccinated. To be safe, I immediately isolated myself in my room, and my friends packed up and left as soon as they could. Four days later I began having symptoms and took a COVID test, which came back positive. A few days after that, I had a follow up call with Dr. Mackey and let her know I had in fact contracted COVID. During this call, she told me that: 1. Though she had been eligible and had had numerous opportunities, she had chosen not to get a vaccine because she felt it was still experimental and potentially more dangerous than the virus itself. 2. That there is no definitive evidence COVID vaccines prevent transmission of the virus, and therefore no point in getting one. 3. That she didn't feel she needed to be vaccinated anyway, because she was not personally in a high-risk group. 4. That she doesn't treat sick people, so even if one of her patients were to contract COVID, it wouldn't really matter. 5. That the common cold is also caused by a corona virus, so it's very possible that our PCR tests produced false positives and nobody actually has COVID. 6. That she chose to wear a thin cloth mask during appointments rather than an N95, because N95s only protect the wearer. (This is false, and pertains only to the types of mask which have an exhaust valve built in. However, when I pointed out that even if such a thing were true, she might have prevented herself from getting infected and then infecting me, Dr. Mackey paused for a long time before claiming there was no way she could know I actually caught COVID from her, and that I could have gotten it by going into a store, or using a gas station bathroom.) I was fortunate because I had a relatively mild case, and have since mostly recovered. (Although I still have not recovered my sense of taste/smell.) My friends were fortunate because we cared enough to take precautions, so they were able to visit their elderly parents the following weekend. But what is truly maddening about this situation is that Dr. Mackey seemed unable to understand or take responsibility for the fact that her bad decisions around COVID don't just affect her. Even if it were true that every single one of her patients is young and healthy and in a "low-risk" group, some of them would certainly leave her office and interact with other people who aren't. Never mind the fact that even people in low-risk groups have died or been hospitalized, and that there are other negative long-term effects besides death that we still don't understand. I'm not writing this review to hurt Dr. Mackey or her business. I just wish that I'd known the things I know now before choosing to see her. If you've read all of the above and don't think any of it is relevant to you as a patient, that is your prerogative. But if, like me, you would prefer to see a medical professional who is not a vaccine skeptic, who takes every possible precaution to protect her patients, and who doesn't become defensive or evasive when asked to accept responsibility for her actions, then you now have that information, and you can make a more informed choice than I was able to. read more

I have been seeing Doctor Mackey for about six months after having chronic shoulder pain for over a year not helped by PT and a myriad of docs who were all stumped by my symptoms. I finally decide to go "out of network" when the quick 15 minute doctor visit wasn't enough to figure it out and an in network osteopath man handled me so much I was terrified of getting adjustments ever again. Her adjustments are amazing, next to miraculous! Her nature is very calm and intuitive and she approaches me as a partner, always making sure to ask me how I am doing. She really tuned into my body and gave me as much time as she could. I know some complain of the price tag but the visit isn't short. It's actually what you'd pay for just 15 minutes with an integrative doc for a consult but with Dr. Mackey you also get adjustments and can have a conversation versus quickly going through a checklist of symptoms and having someone throw supplements your way. Also, I didn't expect to have other issues addressed and discussed that could be exacerbating the issue but her recommendations were very helpful as she is very knowledgeable on many theories of wellness. She even told me about a theory that would later have me not needing to come as often called TMS, by Doctor Schrader and after reading that book I have improved even more. read more

I've known Dr. Mackey since before her days as my general physician. She is one of those rare breed of practitioner that bridges the relevant traditions of the past with the viable present in order to encourage an expandable future. Dr. Mackey's work ethic is based on appreciation for the human condition, it's because of this that she'll always go above and beyond. My deal: I have Episodic Cluster Headaches. Picture giving birth to a full grown rhino through your eye socket every seasonal change. Unfortunately, it's an orphan disease and is presently held in check with Sumatriptan. First, the pretty lights. Onset: Quite unique, mesmerizing and beautiful auras. Second, the pain. As brutal as the onset is diaphanous. I have a 15 min window to take the meds or I'm hosed. It's a pain you experience once and you're willing to do ANYTHING never to feel again (it's the reason why they are also known as "Suicide Headaches"). Long story short, my previous GP retired without notifying me and left me up a creek with no meds and no way to get them. On a Friday night at 10PM... I would've otherwise had to wait until Monday and wade through said creek. Painfully. I called Dr. Mackey. She accepted me and treated me as a new patient, after 10PM. On a Friday. We were recommended to see Kirsten after my 2-year-old son was dealing with ear infections that were not going away. We went to numerous Dr. appointments, being proscribed antibiotic after antibiotic. Personally, there is a time and a place for medicines, and after two rounds of antibiotics, I wondered why were these infections not clearing. We had to see an ear, nose, and throat Dr., who only recommended more antibiotics, and we decided to have the Dr. put tubes in my son's ears to help. But I asked the Dr.s what is causing the fluid not to flow correctly down his ears? I was given generic answers that my son will eventually grow out of this problem. But what if he didn't grow out of it, will he need to get tubes again in another 6-8 months when the tubes in his ear fall out? The tubes were just a bandaid to the issue that my son was having. We wanted to fix the root of this problem, and this is when Kristen comes in. First off Kirsten has an excellent manner with children making my son feel comfortable and went over everything that she was doing to him. After the FIRST treatment, the fluid stopped running out of his ears. The tubes were in place for over a month, and fluid was continually coming out of his ears daily. My son reacted well to the treatment, and we've been back to Kirsten three times now. I can't tell you enough to take your child to see her! You can try another alternative with frequent ear infections in children besides getting tubes. A note to parents: If you have a little one, bring some stuff for them to sit still with, like a new book that you can read. Your child needs to sit still while Kirsten works on them, and coming prepared will make the visit more productive. I can't recommend Dr. Mackey highly enough. I have a complicated autoimmune condition that does not respond well to the traditional treatment course. I began seeing Dr. Mackey about one year ago for OMM, and have since been consistently improving (improvements in both GI and musculoskeletal issues). I have seen many many Docs trying to get my health under control, and what sets Dr. Mackey apart is the individual attention you receive. She doesn't operate a "revolving-door" style practice that gets patients in and out as quick as possible. She really listens to you and takes an active role in helping you become a healthy person. Unfortunately, the office doesn't accept insurance and charges $450+ for an initial 1.5 hour consultation and $250+ thereafter for a 45 minute long appointment. A doctor for the general populous, she is not, so just a word of warning if you don't make six figures. Dr Kirsten did some amazing work on our 9 month old daughter, the only regret I have is not going to her sooner. Our girl has a flat head (brachycephaly) and we decided not to helmet, but first try PT (because it was covered by insurance). That helped a bit but we still saw that something was bothering her. So we finally took her to see Dr Kirsten and our daughter only needed 3 treatments. Especially after the second treatment we immediately saw something changing in her, for all those months she was so stiff and not moving like she should, but 15 minutes after we got home she rolled from back to tummy as she'd been doing that for a long time. Ever since then she moves around and develops like an 'average' baby, ánd she sleeps on her side or tummy and her head is rounding out. All our daughters problems (not being able to nurse, constipation, flat head due to stiffness) were probably caused by a birth trauma and I loved that it could be solved by holistic treatment. I've seen Dr. Mackey in Truckee for prolotherapy injections and osteopathy manual therapy to address pain and issues in my lower back/sacrum area. I'm so grateful for Dr. Mackey and her unique skillset. She recommended the prolotherapy injections after doing a few osteopathic treatments, noting that it would enhance my healing even further. After a couple days of minor tenderness from the injections, I had continued improvement in my lower back discomfort. It took just one injection to get my lower back notably less vulnerable and less likely to "go out" after body work and physical activities. Also, worth noting that I'm not a big fan of anything needle-related, yet had full comfort with Dr. Mackey when getting the injections - I recommend her to everyone. read more

Dr. Mackey is a very special practitioner. She is compassionate, intuitive, deeply versed in her field, and sharp as a whip. I have really never felt so seen or felt by a clinician before, or been treated with so much respect. She also educates you as a patient about her philosophies, what she notices in your body, and how your systems may be working together (or not working together) to keep you sick. I cannot say enough about the structural manipulations. They are truly amazing. I had no idea what an impact my spine, my lymph system, and my cranium were having on my overall health. It's incredible to learn that I do not need to live in pain - I can get to the root of the complaints in my body and address them. Being introduced to osteopathy and to this extraordinary woman was such an amazing boon - I feel very lucky to have her on my team. Kirsten was amazing at correctly diagnosing an issue with my back/shoulder that flared up unexpectedly while traveling, causing me excruciating pain. She worked with me for a session and confidently indicated that I'd be feeling better within a few days.... and sure enough, she was right! Had I not encountered Kirsten, I would have likely tried to get an appt with my GP, gotten a referral to a specialist, gone in for an MRI and done a bunch of unnecessary tests, all of which would have taken much longer and been much less straightforward than working with her. read more

I went to Dr. Mackey with a potpourri of issues ranging from stomach and back pain to neck stiffness and headaches. I had seen chiropractors and GI specialists in the months prior and was on an extremely clean diet... and while I'd made some progress, I was still in pain and taking handfuls of meds and supplements every day. I was pretty frustrated to say the least. My primary physician finally recommended I see her. After just 2 sessions she was able to find the relationship between all the various symptoms, identify the root causes, and make a variety of adjustments that dealt with 90% of my issues.
