My wife and daughter both are very happy about their relationship with their beautician (Jenna) at this place. As the driver for my daughter, I am writing merely to state this facility is far nicer than any place my wife, my daughter, and myself as well, can say I have been to in all of the greater Madison area in 22 years. My wife's hair is very much the reason I fell in love with her 28years ago. Jenna is currently her go to gal for her amazingly beautiful head of curls. Coley, my daughter (nickname) has her mothers curls, but my texture I guess. As a baby she had my blonde. I miss that time. If my hair was still what it was just five years ago I wouldn't hesitate to be here for the hair care I once demanded. These days I'm just happy I still have hair and it's not quite as grey as I see myself when looking in the mirror. We can't choose our neighbors or our follicles.

So I decided to try out Hair Excellence (a mere five-minute drive from my home, if that) and I am so glad I did. I've had a couple of different stylists, since I often don't have a lot of flexibility in terms of appointment times, so I need to take whoever is available. Luckily, all of the stylists seem to be highly trained and proficient at their jobs, so this is never a problem. I've never had a bad experience at Hair Excellence, and I always leave feeling a million times better than I did when I walked in. Most recently, I've had Marc (who did a fantastic job of lightening up my brown hair for summer, without making me look like I was trying to rock a color unsuited for my olive complexion!) and Lucas, who did a phenomenal job of darkening my hair again for fall. Although I like every stylist I've seen, I think I will try to book Lucas every time, since the cut and color was EXACTLY what I wanted. My only (very slight) complaint is that you are not able to add gratuity to your receipt when paying with credit card, so the first time I visited I was a little thrown off (luckily, I was able to visit a nearby ATM and make it back before closing in order to deliver my tip). It would be nice if you were able to add the tip on the credit card, but this is honestly such a minor complaint in the face of such a great experience, that it's almost not worth mentioning (I just remember now to carry cash with me whenever I come in for an appointment). Hair Excellence definitely isn't an inexpensive place (although it's certainly not exorbitant, either), but the service and treatment I receive is one of the best values around. I highly recommend!

On two occasions I've called to make an appointment and have been rudely told that they have no record of me in the system and "are you SURE you've been here before?" Um yes, I've been there multiple times and I'm pretty sure I didn't dream it. As far as stylists go, I've only ever had one who wasn't cold and rude (Lacey), but unfortunately she works limited hours, so it's hard to get an appointment with her. Otherwise, everyone I've had has been generally unfriendly. They've done an ok job on my hair- not spectacular, but at least ok, but for the high prices you pay to go there, I feel like you should at least be treated with a smile and a great haircut.

Kristin has been doing my hair since 2009. As her TOUGHEST crictic, (both as her brutally honest sister and as a long-time client) I genuinely mean it when I say she IS the best!!! She takes great pride in the work that she does due to her professionally high standards, strong work ethic and passion for making people feel beautiful. I always leave the salon feeling like a million bucks! I'm never afraid to try something drastic whether it's a short haircut or a completely different color because I have great confidence in her skill and ability. The salon itself is truely amazing because of Kristin's creativity, attention for detail and artistic design style. I had such an awesome experience with Kristin this afternoon! I booked an appointment with her super last minute to fix a balayage I'd gotten at a different salon that I was unhappy with. She did a really great job of making sure she knew exactly what I wanted and what I wasn't happy with before starting, which was really reassuring. Kristin was super friendly and even took the time to give me a few styling tips when I had questions. I'm so happy with how my hair turned out--Kristin did an awesome job of making my hair look more natural while still giving it a little dimension. The salon itself was also super cute (and they use Aveda products so everything smells amazing). I love Kismet Salon--its vibe, its tea, and its comfortable shampoo chairs. But I really love the work of one of its stylists, Tracy Farrar--enough to drive 100 miles each way once a month for a cut and color. I'm extraordinarily picky about my hair, but Tracy nails the color each and every time, and I always get compliments on the cut (kind of Art Deco). Kismet is great! They add a bunch of extras to make the haircut more than a haircut (oil scalp massage and lotion hand massage). They listen to what you want and make it happen! I called ahead and gave a formula my 9-year hair stylist from my hometown had used for a specific shade of red, and she did a cut and color just as good, even better, than my long time stylist. I share this- if you're trying to gradually move back to a brunette- this probably isn't the right salon. Below are photos after the initial service, after the correction (photos after initial service were shared with salon), and the inspiration photo. I reached out to Rooted Culture regarding my correction for advice and was told "we're not a good fit". The person delivering this message was very nice- but not what I expected. While I agree, it's left me to navigate the aftermath alone. I had a consultation with Charlie regarding what I wanted to accomplish, reviewed pinterest photos, etc. I brought a singular inspiration photo to the service appointment. I was candid about the over highlighting of my hair historically and my desire to get back to a brunette with highlights vs dark blonde with highlights (which is where I started). When my hair was dried- 1/2 of my head had more highlights than the other half. There were chunky very bright blonde pieces at the front and the distance from scalp to initial highlight was very long. I mentioned the dark roots and uneven highlights, but I slept on it. I called back to correct on Wednesday. They fit me in the following Monday- awesome. I should have slowed this appointment down- so we were on the same page. Because I was slotted between clients, it was rushed. Charlie started adding low lights- I mentioned focusing on the bangs because that was my greatest concern- the heavy contrast. Charlie then started to ask me what we should do- I told her I didn't know. a gloss was suggested. Ok sure. Charlie showed me some hair swatches- "which one?" She recommended not going below a 7, but again I told her I don't know. I'd like my hair to be more blended vs high contrast. So she mixed a 9 and 8 (was that the right choice-idk- my head was in a wash bowl). So the gloss stayed on for 4songs- 12-15mins, but was applied to my whole head vs just the bang area. I mentioned that to Charlie that I thought we were only applying to bang area., she mentioned wanting the color to be consistent. End result is the dark hair color in the photos. Again not the end of the world or blue, but nothing like the inspiration photo or my expressed desire to keep some dimension.

I guess maybe what I wanted was a little different than the options available on the site. I'm always a little unsure what to select when I book hair appointments online.
