James was an amazing instructor. I brought a friend to OBX who had flown a trainer kite and done some short body drags. Kite Club Hatteras was worth every penny. James stayed in touch each morning, planning lessons based on the wind. He even picked my friend up on the jet ski at our rented house for each lesson. Had an amazing time with kite club hatteras! The lessons with graham were great, he is a patient and very professional instructor. I personally progressed a lot and left feeling much more confident in my kiting ability. They are very reasonable, especially compared to some other kite lessons on the island. Hristo (the owner) and graham were also both super helpful with advice on what to do , which beaches to relax on, and where to eat during our stay. The apartment is also a great place to stay, meet other travelers and kiters, and all around have a relaxed time. It is several satellite editions around a central living room and kitchen. The back porch is on the canal leading to the sound. It is a really nice house, and is maintained in great condition. My wife and I stayed at Kite Club Hatteras for the month of October 2017. A year back we left our prior lives to explore kite spots and surf spots the world over. Kite Club Hatteras (KCH) is on our favorites list so far and here's why. The very first thing we consider - location. Do we have to drive far? Are the spots walking distance? If not, how far are they? If you are learning, they take you kiting from the docked boat behind the house! We weren't beginners so this didn't help us, but Avon, the town, is in the middle of all the key spots. We knew nothing about the spots before arriving, but within a short drive North or South you have at least 8 kite spots! I even walked to surf several times from the house. Amazing location. The second thing we look for is the bedroom/bathroom situation. We look for the ability to feel at home. The bedroom looks exactly like the pictures and with a closet and dresser, you can easily put your things away. The bathrooms are shared with double entry. It's easy to simply lock the other side or work out a knock with your neighbor. The third thing we try to look for is, does the place look comfortable for hanging out between sessions, at night and whenever we aren't out and about? I love a good couch. I love organizing my gear and keeping it clean. The inside living space is unreal with a massive L shaped couch that can sit about 7 people. Nearby in the open kitchen, the central table can easily sit 10. This layout allows lots of room for being social or simply relaxing on your own. My favorite area was the couch and the patio outside our room. That patio was my gear prep area, gear drying area, sunrise/sunset chill area. It's amazing. The kitchen is extremely well appointed with everything you need to cook, clean and put away leftovers. There is plenty of dry storage and the fridge is massive. The last thing is something we hope for, but can't know from a picture or description. Does the place have soul? Are the people good people who run the place? You really can't know this until you get to a place or read a review like this. We are firm believers in the law of attraction - positive attracts positive, negative attracts negative. Christo and his wife, the owners, are simply delightful. They create a "home" feel that no furniture or layout alone can achieve. They have hired instructors who are a reflection of their values - they care. One of the instructors also manages the house. He provides just the right amount of structure to keep guests who don't know each other, from perhaps stepping on each other's toes, while living under the same roof sharing the common kitchen and living space. It's the perfect balance. You know how we know a place was great? When, weeks after you leave, the place keeps popping into your head and you miss it. We miss Kite Club Hatteras. You will love it. They were always available if we had a question (we didn't have many) and were very accommodating. Our families enjoyed the house, which had plenty of room for 6 adults and 4 kids. I made a quick stop here between races at VIR, in an effort to continue learning to kite. I was really impressed with this location and school. It's a unique place with acres of shallow water and lots of space so you don't feel crowded while learning. My instructor was knowledgeable and very good. The equipment was new Cabrinha. The beaches and town are nice -- I think is good for both beginners and advanced. I'm hoping to return to KCH soon! read more

Staying here is like jumping into a family from first "hello!" Kite Club Hatteras has a wonderful community feeling to it. There is a large communal area with comfy couches and spacious kitchen where we made smoothies in the morning. Everyone is super friendly and ready to offer kiting tips and advice for local areas to go kite depending on experience level. We didn't take any lessons this time, but after talking with a couple instructors, we wish we had. They are awesome! The space here is clean, cozy and comfortable. I highly recommend. read more

I seriously can't recommend this place enough, I've been twice, and I intend on returning. I started as a complete beginner and now, thanks to Christo and his team, can confidently get up and ride a good distance. (there's tons more to learn, but that's huge). The instructors have many years of experience kiting, which is crucial, but more importantly, they're great teachers. Their experience has given them the ability to know the right thing to tell you at each stage in your progression- which is extremely helpful, and a much better use of your money than going out with a less experienced teacher. In fact, they host IKO instructor and trainer courses here too. They're also totally safety conscious while being quite chill in general. The houses that make up the kite club are right on the water, and they have 2 boats and a jet ski so that there's no time wasted getting out when the conditions are good. It's a pleasure to wake up in a room, go out and have breakfast, find out that the wind is up, and just walk downstairs to gear up and hop in a boat- no car needed. The spots they go to are huge, typically flat, mostly shallow, with very few other kiters. -in other words, crazy ideal. And, depending on when you go, the water's nice and warm. On top of all that, it's a super friendly space. On both of my trips, there were people from all over the world, all very supportive and cool. There's a pool, plenty of deck space, a grill, and a fully stocked kitchen with dishes, pots, pans, even a blender for smoothies. read more

I just returned from a nine day vacation from KCH as both a guest and a kite-boarding student. While I was only able to complete five of the nine hours of instruction (thanks, Hurricane Joaquin!), I appreciate that this crew is all about safety. First of all, the entire group of employees/crew (Christo, Melissa, Graham, and Fozzie) are friendly, funny, accommodating, and professional. The rooms are clean and neat as a pin, the shared spaces are also very comfortable, and my kite-boarding lessons with Graham were fantastic! Not only is he a very patient instructor, but he's funny (which helps you relax), kind, VERY passionate about the sport, and tailors the lessons to the individual. Because of their emphasis on safety, I never felt I was in harm's way, so I was able to relax and get the most out of my lessons. I'm sure when I return near the end of this month to finish my lessons, I will receive the same treatment. Want to learn to kite-surf? This is the place. I've spent a week there twice and have taken several lessons from Christo and Graham. They're solid teachers. It's a whole different experience staying there and getting lessons (as opposed to getting lessons one at a time) because you're living with other kites, windsurfers, and instructors. That makes it easier to get a lesson one day, try it on your own the next, and have another lesson to keep building on the next day. Plus, you get to talk theory and get advice from all the other folks staying there. Great value, too. Having a boat follow you for lessons costs a little more, but it lets you not worry about where you are or what's going on -- you've always got an instructor right there. I got a lot out of each lesson because there was no time getting back upwind. read more

Had a great time doing the 3 day express course in early October 2019. Took much longer than 3 days, which was great, because they were very good at getting me on the water when the winds were good and rescheduling when they weren't. Their flexibility with that was really helpful. They were also all really helpful on the water, especially on the last day when Graham (sp?) had me use a larger, wider board, which made getting and staying up easier than it otherwise would have been. Look forward to heading back once the water heats up a little in the spring. Avon is a lovely place to stay, btw, much less crowded and quieter than the northern OBX towns but with enough to see and do when the winds aren't cooperating. read more

Spent 5 days with Kite Club Hatteras, winds at their awesome location allowed me to get out 4 of those days! I came as a complete novice - by the 4th day was getting out of water and boarding to the left and to the right ... about what I was hoping to be able to accomplish. The two instructors that I had were both patient, competent and their instructions were useful-clear-doable! Great learning pace from initial basics, then incremental add-on of ideas/skills. And have to say something about location --- I didn't know much about the Outer Banks, had no idea what to expect ... was amazed to see how huge an area (as in miles and miles) that were open water to learn in ... was even more amazed when first jumped out of boat into water and discovered was only waist-to-chest deep! There may be other competent schools in area to learn from but I can't imagine they have anything better to offer. Kristo's Kite Club Hatteras has plush housing, is on the water, has boats and jet-skies waiting at their own dock, lots of equipment ... fun instructors. Guess what --- I'm planning on going back ... Best find in the obx! I'm hesitant to review because I don't want the secret to get out! I have stayed a couple weekends. Super casual, super easy. Christo is an awesome host. Super friendly and accommodating. Lots of cool kiters around to talk with and share stories. Obviously a good budget deal but even if I was a millionaire and could afford anything, if I was traveling alone, I would stay here just for the community. With their own boats, easy location with walking distance to fast food and nicer restaurants (relative), quick walk to the pier in avon, and a quick boat ride to amazing wind for kiting, you really can't go wrong. I went on a surf trip with around 6 other surfers, and we stayed at the Turtle Club house. The location is great! Nicely tucked away from Avon and 20 min drive to Frisco. The owner, Christo, was very flexible and accommodating. The unit has good furniture and decor. The kitchen and living room area was great for hanging out and streaming surf videos and football. There was also an option of accessing extra equipment like SUP's and kite surfing. I will definitely stay here again for the next surf trip. read more

I just returned from spending two weeks in the Outer Banks while staying at Kite Club Hatteras. I went by myself this time and expressly to learn how to kiteboard. This is what I learned: If you want to learn how to kiteboard, there is no better place than in the Outer Banks, specifically on Cape Hatteras National Seashore. The flat, shallow waters of Pamlico Sound combined with nice winds make for the ideal combination to fast-track your learning experience. Once on the island, there are no shortage of schools and instructors (many of them quite good) that will happily take your money, provide you with the allotted time, then thank you and pat you on the back for a job well done. Kite Club Hatteras distinguishes itself from the rest by providing much more than that. I signed up for the 7-day Kite Camp which included seven nights in a private room at Kite Club Hatteras' lovely Sound-side guesthouse and 9 hours of private instruction. All lessons were done with the support of a boat and in isolated areas of the Sound, far away from other kiters and dangerous obstacles. My instructor, Graham, was very knowledgeable and professional. Of his many virtues, he is quick to gauge his students (personalities, abilities, learning styles) and adapt his own instructional approach to best suit the needs of the individual student. Graham stresses safety above all, followed by correct and solid progression of skills. He was very supportive out on the water and provided me with thoughtful adjustments to my technique, which I found most useful. He might even videotape your session to show you what you need to work on. I had 5 sessions/13 hours with Graham and he took me from someone who could barely get up on the board to a bona-fide kiter able to ride in both directions and even stay upwind at times. I now have the confidence to work on my skills by myself at my home beach. To sum up the school, it is nothing less than top-notch. I mentioned that Kite Club Hatteras was much more than about lessons; it truly is a complete kiting experience. During my two weeks there, there were other guests from all over the world and all walks of life, coming and going. Some were like me: new kiters there to learn the sport. Others had been kiting for years and stayed at Kite Club Hatteras to ride with others. Still other guests came to enjoy the beautiful serenity of the Outer Banks without wanting to kite at all. Everyone I met was friendly and eager to share their experiences. It was great being around such a good crowd of like-minded travelers. This is a place where the owner, Christo, will ask you to go surfing with him one afternoon when the waves are good and everyone will want to go on a long downwinder the next. And that is the "full experience" part of staying at Kite Club Hatteras. Whether you come to learn to kite, ride with others, or simply do your own thing, you can't go wrong here. The rates for lessons are the most reasonable in the area. Not only that, I really like how they don't try to nickel-and-dime you for every little thing unlike some other operations on the island. Christo is a really good guy. He is running a business but you get the feeling he is doing it for the stoke way more than for a profit motive. He is extremely chill and personable. In fact, I spent my first night there drinking beer out on his deck with his friends just shootin' the breeze. His girlfriend Melissa, a sweetheart if you've ever met one, is herself an accomplished kiteboarder and surfer and teaches Stand Up Paddle Boarding for those windless days. She bakes a super-mean loaf of banana bread as well. As far as the accommodations, the room was clean and the house was furnished nicely. There is a Food Lion nearby so you can shop for groceries and make your own food. There are also a variety of tasty dining options in town if you'd rather. I ate the blackened fish tacos at Buxton Munch more than I'm comfortable admitting. I'll definitely be back so if you decide to stay here, maybe we can go on that epic downwinder sometime. We stayed at Kite club Hatteras for 1 week for a kite camp and had a wonderful time. The location was great, and was very close to Food Lion, cafes, other shops, and beaches. The house was located right by the water and you leave for the kite board class form in front of the house. The staff were very friendly, kind, fun, and run the place very well. Christo was quick to respond to my e-mails, and I go all of my questions answered. We met amazing people from all over the world, enjoyed the conversations, and had an amazing time. The room was clean, comfortable, and quiet at night. I loved the specious kitchen and cooked most of the meals. The kite boarding classes were amazing, and highly recommend to anyone. I have taken a class in Florida, but the one here was so much better!!! Our instructor Graham was such a great teacher, we are planning to go back to take his lessons again.
