I'm from out of town on a kite trip. On a day I was kiteboarding I had a critical issue with my Ion harness and Duotone click bar. Ocean Air is an authorized dealer for both brands so I stopped by the next day to get assistance and support. Ken and the staff were exemplary in terms of problem solving and fixing my gear. They were so kind as to let me borrow similar functioning gear so I can kite that day as they probed solutions. I never made the original purchase of this equipment at Ocean. The customer service at Ocean Air is second to none. Any manufacturer would be lucky to have a dealer like them to sell and support their products. I've wanted to try SUP for years but always ran out of time or conditions weren't right. This year, the wind died down and the sound was calm on the same day my best friend was visiting so we decided to give it a try! I called at 12:30 hoping they'd have a few boards free and was told they would have a bunch at 1:00. We went in and they couldn't have been more nice or reassuring to a first timer. After a two minute tutorial on the dock we were off, and after getting our sea legs five minutes later felt like pros. We paddled our boards around the corner to the house we were renting where our kids took turns trying it out. We visited the canals and little island, spotting tons of ocean life in the sound along the way. When our time was up we paddled back and returning them was a breeze (though I loved SUP so much it was hard to give them back!) They also offer other water sports so now we're plotting all the different sports to try. It's great how they have the equipment right there in the water so there's no annoying wait time or transporting equipment. I might even try the jet skis or SUP yoga class next year. I called Ocean Air sports on Tuesday at 10:30am, for a guided jet ski tour. The woman on the phone said that that someone would be in contact with me soon to book the tour. At 3:30 I called back, the same woman told me that they were unable to do the guided tour because of weather conditions. It's 85, sunny, not a cloud in the sky, and I'm sitting on a deck watching jet skis run up and down the sound. I just booked a jet ski tour with Nags Head Waters Sport, at 4pm. I guess Ocean Air Sports didn't want the business. read more

AMAZING SERVICE!!! We grabbed a spot on the sound around the corner and rented a few SUP boards for the day. My husband grabbed one board and paddled over to us. They could have easily made me load the other boards into our vehicle, but instead delivered them to us! They were also very helpful and nice, super knowledgable, and able to train us on what to do in a very simple and to the point way. Also during our day on the sound they stopped by to check on us and make sure we were ok and still having a great time (which we were)! We will be back next year for sure to rent for the week ! I drop in here once in awhile to get random kiteboarding supplies. More recently i brought my family here to rent a SUP and some kayaks to enjoy a windless day on the sound. Everything went very smoothly and we were out on the water without any hassle. They even let it slide when we came back a little late with the rental gear. This place is right on the water, unlike some there places where you have to transport the big bulky boards and kayaks to the water. Also, there is a pretty decent waterfront restaurant adjacent so you can get a nice meal and cold beer after time on the water. read more

We spent a fun Sunday morning with Ken and one other customer on a two-hour sailboarding lesson. The price was just right. We stopped by a few days before to reserve a spot and were warned we may have to consider Saturday or Sunday depending on the wind. The staff was very friendly and kept us up-to-date on the status of the weather and our appointment. Sunday turned out to be the best option, and Ken had us up and out on the water quickly. My two partners were quick learners; I found it a bit harder and probably could have used a bit more explanation on land before we headed out. But we all had a great time. If you're a complete newbie like me, you might want to watch a few videos online before your lesson -- but my friends did OK, so I can't fault Ken's training lesson! Have fun. read more

Booked a reservation for 10:30 AM with a bright and energetic person on the phone. Showed up a bit early to fill in paperwork and then we were out on the water for some awesome jet skiing. The guys on the dock go through a safety presentation and then get you sorted out on a jet ski and review proper usage and controls etc. Once you're up and running you follow them about 1/2 mile out into the sound where they have a giant flagged off area for jet skiing. After they show you the boundaries you are left to tear it up for as long as you've rented the jet ski for. We had a great time and felt safe and secure without too much interference from the crew at OceanAir. Definitely recommend this one in Avon! read more

Rented a couple of kayaks and SUPs from these guys a couple of years ago and everything worked out fine. This year my daughter and I had our first windsurfing lesson with Martene and she was great, unfortunately it got us hooked. So on top of this years kayaks, SUPs and Hobie rental we also had to rent the windsurfing kit for a day. Spent a small fortune but everyone was friendly & super helpful and the equipment all worked - no complaints. If you're looking for a safe, well run water sports place for either paddle boarding, kayaking, or wave runners, this is your place. Great, and I mean fantastic and friendly, helpful, staff that gets you set up, explain safety easily and thoroughly for your kids, and get you going from their nicely set up launching area. They want you to be safe and to have fun. Mission accomplished. They've got all the latest equipment. It's also a great beach store with top quality sunglasses, flip flops, and water sports equipment at good prices. We will be returning next year as customer service is number one on our list and this place has it in spades. Everyone was super friendly, they have a sick right or back of the store, and they provide all the little extra, including water shoes, in case you want to stop and explore the sound. This place is so good that I finally caved to signing up to Yelp to leave them a review - yes - that good. I've used their rental shop for Kites, SUPs & windsurf gear, kite lessons for my wife and I've bought a fair bit of kite gear from them and Every.Single.Time they exceed my expectations which by now - are set pretty high. Some of the guys I kite with try to tell me that there are other brands apart from North since my entire quiver is North. The thing is, I'm not brand loyal, it's just that OAS provide such incredible service that I always come back here. The shopping experience is great for me - all of the staff are super friendly, knowledgeable and helpful, there's never any pressure to buy anything which I really appreciate - its as shopping should be - enjoyable. Rentals are always handled quickly and efficiently allowing me to get as much water time as possible - lessons (according to my wife) are excellent. She had a little trepidation going into her first kite lesson. 3 hours later she came off the water with an enormous smile. Danny did a fantastic job of sensing her nervousness and managed to put her at ease - she's hooked and has made me promise that we go back this year for more. Great windsurfing and rental experience. Family reunion at nags head. Half day window of opportunity to windsurf with the wind predicted at 20 mph. Ken was super helpful and set me up with gear to match my experience. I haven't windsurfed for about 20 years so definitely needed the help. Put in at shop and swam/walked in chest deep water out open water and wind. Water stayed chest deep all the way out. Perfect for resting after crashing. Next time I'll try the kitesurfing. read more

My family has been renting windsufing equipment from Ocean Air (formerly Windsurfing Hatteras) for around 2 decades. We have never been disappointed. They have great variety of very new and diverse equipment. For example last June, I was able to try out the innovative 120 Atom IQ board (I am a chemist and of course I like the name) from Starboard. This is the extra wide and slim board which is more stable and allows one to plane earlier compared with conventional boards. I was able to do five normal jibes in a row, for the first time. Hopefully, they have the 100 liter size I can try out next time before purchase decision. Visited OAS several times this past summer when we spent the week in Buxton and had a great experience with everyone working there. I took a windsurfing lesson with Martene, who was fantastic! She was so friendly and so patient with me, I got hooked! We were there several days, renting paddleboards and windsurfing kits. They're in a great location in that you can launch right onto the sound and play in the water right behind the store, which was awesome for a beginner like me. They also run several summer camps for kids, who were out playing in the water while I was taking my lesson. They have all sorts of water toys available to rent and try out as well as great retail store with clothing and equipment too. Definitely check them out if you're in the area. read more
