While the administration pays a lot of lip service to the Reggio Emilia philosophy, that's all marketing and zero substance at this school. Reggio Emilia at its core is adaptive and flexible; the goal is tailor the educational approach to the learning style of each individual child. Contrary to that approach, the teaching staff (who, it must be said, are mostly very kind and caring) are trained to follow a single approach that is applied to all the children. My child attended the 2's and 3's program. When I observed that some of the classroom approaches were too rigid for her in some ways, and not challenging enough in others, and that the environment was in some ways not conducive to her learning style, I made suggestions to the administration about ways to adapt the setting to better suit her needs. My requests, which were trivial in scope and would not have posed much of a challenge from a budget or logistics perspective, were largely ignored. Instead, I was advised to hire an additional teacher, at my own expense, to work one-on-one with my child because her existing teachers were "too busy" with the other kids to handle my requests. Imagine that: after paying a tuition of over $15,000 per year for pre-school (which was more than I paid for my excellent private college!), I was told that in order to meet my child's educational requirements, I would need to pay for another teacher, an additional $120 per hour! Like the other parent below, we moved our daughter to another Williamsburg school, which has smaller class sizes, and an administration that cares about cultivating a healthy environment of learning. The people who run Williamsburg Northside care more about cultivating a healthy bottom line.

However, if you have an easy going child who rarely has a hiccup in life then definitely consider Dwight Summer Camp. This is our 6th summer attending a local camp and in past years we have been to Bank Street, Oasis and FastBreak. PROS: Dwight's facilities are gorgeous (i.e., indoor pool, a basketball court, enclosed outdoor space etc.) and their curriculum for Adventure camp was impressive (i.e., seeing a Broadway play etc.). CONS: Unfortunately our experience did not end well. My child is ADHD which I discussed with the camp prior to signing up. I was assured this would not be an issue and reminded that the camp has a low student to counselor ratio and that their staff is comprised of experienced staff working in the field of education. My child does take medication so all things combined, it sounded like a recipe for success. In reality I was called on two occasions and told my child would need to be picked up from camp immediately. On one occasion the person calling stated "we aren't sure what happened but we can discuss when you get here." Call me crazy but as a customer the very least they could do is figure out what happened BEFORE calling me. On another occasion the camp director expressed that I was on speaker phone and "did I want to say anything to my child." My child can be anxious and sensitive so I responded by saying I would speak to them in person since I suspect they may have hard time verbalizing themselves if they are emotional. The director responded with "well, they were doing a good job of verbalizing how much they don't like this camp." Umm, well... my child is 8... and probably upset... maybe even scared... (and, yes) behaving poorly given the circumstances.... but YOU are an adult AND the director so maybe try and show up with a bit more compassion. This is a job for which you are paid to do and I am helping to pay that salary. At the time of that call I was in another state for work but expressed I would reach out to the sitter and ask them to pick-up my child. The director then expressed that my being away might explain my child's poor behavior. Ouch... I felt a bit helpless being half away across the country and that definitely felt like a kick when I was already down. I fully admit that my child is rambunctious, sometimes difficult and never perfect. They are also kind, smart, loving and desperate to feel like they belong. I've gotten my fair share of calls or requests "to speak." It's never fun and more often than not I feel disappointed but I show up, I listen and I work hard with my child to ensure the next day is a better day. Having been at this for several years I've encountered many people who lack compassion and probably should find another profession. I expect it. But in the years I have been doing this, never has a camp or program demanded I pick-up my child. In the 3 weeks we attended Dwight we had more good days then bad but the bad days were handled so poorly that I am certain we won't be returning.

Our daughter attended Seedlings starting in 2021, right after the Covid-19 pandemic. We always felt assured that their top priority was the health, safety, and well-being of all of their students, and they spent a lot of time helping with the kids' social development, which was so incredibly important, especially after lengths of social isolation during the pandemic. We loved the community feeling of Seedlings, and to this day (our daughter is now 7), some of our closest friends are parents of our daughter's Seedlings classmates - we still keep in touch with some who have moved back to the UK and Europe! The fact that Seedlings prioritizes age-appropriate learning and understands the importance of play in terms of learning and development was key to us. Each day was filled with reading, art, music, play, science/nature, and typically a new experience or activity. The outdoor space was such a nice addition to the kids' experience, and knowing they had time to play and learn outdoors each day (weather permitting) was so important. Our daughter grew in leaps and bounds during her time at Seedlings, and was well-prepared to enter Kindergarten. We really appreciated the small class sizes, and the personalized attention Tracy and the rest of the staff gives to each and every child. To this day, our 7-year-old comes back to "read aloud" to the current Seedlings cohort from time to time, and is always welcomed with open arms by all. Tracy and the staff are invested in her growth, even now, years later, and have always supported her journey of overcoming her initial social anxiety post-pandemic and becoming more independent and confident. Once you become a part of the Seedlings family, you are always welcomed and celebrated, which is an incredible gift for both the Seedlings student and the entire family - especially in today's busy times. I can honestly say that we are so grateful we chose Seedlings for preschool, which is such a critical time in every child's development, and we'd highly recommend it to other families looking for the right fit for their child/children.
