The maple creemee was incredible -- unbelievably delicious, rich, and perfectly creamy with an authentic maple flavor that completely lives up to the hype. Easily one of the best maple treats you'll find anywhere. The maple syrup tasting was both informative and fun. The staff did a fantastic job explaining the different syrup grades and flavor profiles, and it was fascinating to taste how much they vary. Everything felt fresh, high-quality, and clearly made with care. The grounds themselves are beautiful, especially in winter. With a deep blanket of snow covering the landscape, the farm felt peaceful, scenic, and exactly what you hope for when visiting Vermont in February. It seems that at some point it was moved here to the parking lot of a business from a shorter concrete slab in the woods. It's not really the tallest filing cabinet. It's a stack of regular-height filing cabinets attached to one another into a column, so it's less impressive or creative. Structurally, it is a vertical stack of separate cabinets turned into a sculpture, not a purpose-built giant cabinet with 38 drawers. It's covered by vandals' stickers and markings. It hasn't been treated and since they aren't meant to be outdoors, rust and weather damage has taken severe effect. Each drawer represents a year of bureaucratic delays related to a proposed highway project in Burlington called the Southern Connector, first proposed in 1965. Some of the drawers contain catalogued fragments of a shredded red Volkswagen Beetle. Of course, you can't see it though.

As we were staying near Ludlow, I had put this on our schedule as a "check it out whenever time…read morepermits" item. We drove back after visiting some places to the north, and were passing this around 4 p.m. so we checked it out. This was in early October and the sun was just starting to go down. Though it was pre-dusk, it would be better to visit this site in full sunlight. There are 3 separate falls (the creatively named upper, middle, and lower). You access them from the main highway via a side road that starts as paved but soon becomes (good) dirt/gravel. The total length is less than 2 miles. You first get to a wide spot / parking area from which you can access the middle and lower falls. A trail leads down a hill where you must choose which falls to visit. The middle falls is impressive. It is probably the easiest one to access. The area from which you have the best view is a bit rocky, but navigable. It makes for nice photos. The lower falls appeared accessible from a side trail that descended a bit more steeply. You can also see it from above (somewhat) without descending. It appeared smaller and less photogenic than the middle falls. We then drove another 1/4 mile up the road (to its end) to check out the upper falls. There is a sharp short descent from the road to the top of the falls. It appeared to have a fairly large pool at the bottom and a flat dirt/sand area where some people had laid out a blanket for a picnic. The light was fading more so we skipped walking down the relatively gentle slope to check it out further. If you are in the area and have time, this is a nice spot to visit. It is within 3 miles of Ludlow. I cannot comment on what the swimming is like, but I saw references to that online (during summers, I guess).

So we got our Thanksgiving turkey at The Green Mountain Girls Farm, and it was the best turkey I've…read moreever made. Even my sister said so! The day before, my husband picked up a big 22-pound bird that had just been butchered a few days ago. It was so fresh that I had a few tiny feathers floating around in my brine. It was so fresh that I could just barely separate the skin from the breast meat to rub in the butter and fresh thyme, which the Girls also so generously provided. It was so fresh I didn't really have to tie together the legs or pin down the wings. It was so fresh that you could *taste* it. And this was (or had been) one healthy turkey! You could tell by the quality of the skin, the texture of the uncooked meat, the size of the bones!!! Man, this turkey had been doing some weight-bearing exercises or something! Huge leg bones. Wings you could make a meal of. I can't wait to taste the broth. Yet the meat was as tender as it was flavorful. Now, with fresh turkey from a farm, you're gonna want to brine it. My 22-lb bird fit in the brining bag from the grocery store beautifully. I put in 1.5 cups of salt, a cup of sugar, and about 2 gallons of water, and I let her sit for about 18 hours. I rinsed her real well; patted her dry; stuffed her with onion, carrots, and celery; covered her with a pound of bacon; wrapped her up tightly in tinfoil; and then I let her roast at 425 degrees for about 3 hours, unwrapped her, and let her brown for about 30 more. Perfect. Tomorrow I'm making turkey pot pie and turkey stock--with locally grown carrots, onions, garlic, and celery. I love knowing that my turkey had been well-cared for and loved, that she is about as organic as you can get, and that her purchase supported my favorite local farm girls. And my guests loved that tender, tasty turkey.

This small and very unassuming bridge located in Stowe is actually said to be haunted !! The name…read moreof this covered bridge, the Gold Brook, is also known as Emily's Bridge. It was built in 1844, and the most famous of the (many) stories about this bridge is that back in the 1800's, a farmer's daughter, Emily, fell in love with a young man from a rich family, but his parents refused to allow their wedding to occur. The young man told Emily to wait on the bridge at midnight, but he didn't show, and she was so distraught, she is said to have taken her own life. Allegedly, her ghost appears during the nighttime around Halloween, haunting those who come to the bridge. We drove over the quiet bridge during a summer day, but we saw no sightings of Emily !!

We took that as a challenge, and gleefully have to admit that yes, it IS the best bacon in the world. I believe that a pound of nitrate free bacon was about $7-9/lb, and it didn't last. That's about the price for any nitrate free bacon, and here it was actually from some happy, heirloom pigs. It is fattier than some of the bacon you might find elsewhere, so just keep a jar handy to save the drippings to add to potatoes or possibly to deep fry a healthy french fry (http://www.foodandwine.com/articles/lard-the-new-health-food). When we return to Vermont for the 4th of July, we will be picking up a few pounds to take back. It is so very good.
