On the store's website, there's an offer next to each book: "Shipping by mail: from CA $12.00, free for orders over CA $100.00". However, whenever the store couldn't fulfill its obligations for the accepted order, specifically by not shipping all the ordered books (which happened to me several times), they still honored their commitment to free shipping. Despite the inconvenience of not receiving all the books from the order, I continued to order books from them. In 2024, I encountered a situation, when the store couldn't fulfill its obligations for the accepted order - by delivering all the ordered books, they refused to honor their commitment to free shipping and offered to charge me for delivery. Moreover, the store employee insisted that it's normal to change the shipping conditions when they had already accepted my order with the agreed condition of free shipping. In other words, I should pay for their mistakes because they are working with the wrong suppliers?! I "like" this... The service was not great before (few people would appreciate waiting for an order to be shipped in 16 days, only to find out that some books may not arrive), but now the service is absolutely appalling. Needless to say, now I am going to buy books from other website, fortunately, there's no shortage of online bookstores.

That list…read morespecifically mentioned the book vending machine which I had to try, but as an avid reader and book-collector ("antiquarian" if you're fancy) I was equally interested in simply perusing the store as a whole. The book vending machine-- as of March 2025, for a $5 CAD bill (or credit card), you get a token for the machine which randomly drops a vintage book. I received a hard-cover vintage mystery novel nicely wrapped in a mylar book protective jacket (and a price tag indicating this one was $19.99 at one point). Pretty cool book, pretty recommended experience overall. As to the store itself--friendly proprietor and generally nice layout. But try as I might, I could not find a book to spend my money on. I was intent on purchasing something, and open to splurging a bit. But the closest I came was a 3rd or 4th edition hardcover of Daphne De Maurier's "Don't Look Now" novel printed in the 1970s. I love her work and have many of her books, but not this one which may be her most famous due to the Donald Sutherland film adaptation. However, for $35...I just couldn't quite do it. If it were a first edition, most certainly. If it were $20 for a 4th edition, quite possibly. There were some cool vintage sci-fi paperbacks (Heinlein, Herbert, Aasimov, etc.) that were probably priced in line with the market. But much of the stock reminded me of how "curating" a collection can present items as more valuable than they are. Is a gardening book from the 1950s in VF condition worth $40? Or a map cut out of an old National Geographic matted on cardstock worth $20? I really like the idea of this store and wish them the best because book stores are the coolest places on earth. I just felt everything was about 25% higher than it was likely worth. I would have splurged had I come across a great old edition of a favorite novel, though. Sounds like stock changes regularly and they are set up to encourage perusing, finding something you didn't know you were looking for. Wish them continued success and giving them a solid "3" (which in my book is "good"). Definitely recommend the vending machine!

I love this bookstore. It is a great little place to find many books in Spanish. You can always find something you like. Once I wanted a book that was very hard to get, so they can actually see if they can order the book and bring you the book, no shipping!!! This is awesome, so I have ordered several books with them, mostly special editions and hard to get books. The owners are super nice, and they also love reading, so they really about all they are selling. During Christmas time, they have turrones, sidra, and lots of yummy treats coming directly from Spain. They also sell arts, which are super cool and with character, such as photography, paintings, sculptures, and souvenirs. I am totally a fan!

It's collection may be small, but the quality is definitely there, offering gently used books, rare books (mostly hardcover) and even a few remainder and new books in various titles, both popular and unexpected. It also holds good hours, open late (9pm) Tuesday to Friday, catering to those who can't get to these little shops during the day.

While both are polar opposites on many levels, they both have lots of used books and helpful owners. The Book Exchange is extremely semective about the books they buy and sell. You will see a good selection of histories, biographies, fiction, and children's titles as well. The owner is knowledgeable about his selection and eager to help you find what you are looking for. Once you visit here, go next door for an exercise in personality contrasts.

It may take you some time to find what you are looking for, but when you find it it you will be overjoyed and won't blanche at the price. They also have a separate section upstairs, which was even more disorganized but had some very unique items. The woman working at the shop was lovely, and she helpfully referred me to other bookstores in the city. The type of shop that demands repeat visits. The neighborhood has a Haight-Asbury vibe to it; nothing dangerous, but a bit well-lived in. Leave your Tesla at home and take mass transit.
