The place was pretty disorganized and yet had some lovely yarns. I got tired of rummaging and bought some locally dyed yarn in pink. Lovely.

While in Newport for the boat show today, I visited this yarn store which is located down at the end of Thames Street in a strip mall with a couple of yacht brokers. It's a small place, not flashy, no large discount warehouse in the back. But this store was a nice respite from the sun and crowds of the boat show. The yarn selection was well chosen and there certainly were enough different kinds to wrack me with indecision. Lovely, interesting samples were on display around the store, many of them were original designs by the woman running the shop, whom I presumed to be the owner. She was very friendly and informative. She explained about her display of yarn on one wall which was the last stock of a yarn company that had gone out of business. This is Paternayan Persian yarn, used for needlepoint. There is still quite a lot of it in the store in many colors. It's sold in strands, so it's not good for knitting, but it was interesting to talk to the proprietor about it. With each yarn purchase she gives you a free pattern, which is very nice. None of her designs are on Ravelry, which is too bad. I'll just have to go back next time I'm in Newport for check them out.. read more

They have a really nice selection of individual Lykke needles and crochet hooks to try (as well as other brands but those are my favorite) and the owner is knowledgeable and helpful. Yarn selection has some unique/fun stuff. read more

Whenever I go on vacation, I like to visit the local yarn shops. My friend thinks this is strange, given that Newport RI is not known for yarn, not like say Scotland (where I had vacation last and bought so much yarn!). But we had time on our hands, and found this shop towards the end of the touristy strip. It's a cozy little place but with so much yarn and samples all around, and around a round table sat 2 women who were as friendly as can be! We started chatting about the yarn from Peru, and the owner Michelle even got on Ravelry to try and help me figure out how much I was going to need for a project I had in mind. There are yarn for all sorts of budgets. I just loved walking around and touching/feeling them all. Superb and friendly service, and I loved the yarn I bought! read more

Don't go out of your way to come here... and if you do, check their hours first. They are closed the first part of the week. There is really not much yarn in this shop, which means there's not much selection. I especially love indie dyed yarns, so I was disappointed and left empty-handed. I will say there was a LOT of finished projects displayed throughout, and I do love that. It's nice to have inspiration, to see what a pattern will end up as, and how yarn looks and feels knit up. read more

We went in on a rainy day hoping for some warmth and yarn. Found a brisk and rude owner(?), mediocre yarn choices and no where to sit and enjoy the yarn fumes. Okay if you need needles in an emergency, but I'm glad it's not my LYS. read more

I so wish this store had knitting classes - if it did, I would probably live in the store. I've gone in a few times and looked and touched all the yarns, but don't know how to knit. The person behind the counter (who I think was the owner) didn't seem to think knitting classes were such a good idea. It's too bad - this little place could be a hub of community knitting. Oh, and I live around the corner so that makes it all the more painful :-) read more

Well stocked, really peaceful and relaxing environment. Plenty if pattern books to choose from including my fave Debbie Bliss, lots of completed projects around the store to emulate, great hours. She has a terrific variety of yarn to choose from and is more than willing to have neophyte garners stitch right there and assist if necessary. I pretty much learned to knit here. read more

I found this shop to be well stocked for a small LYS. The owner was extremely helpful with yarn substitution on two different patterns. The table and chairs were comfortable to knit or crochet or to browse through books. I will shop here again. read more

I don't know where Michelle H went but it certainly doesn't sound like Knitting Needles in Newport. I went today for the first (but definitely not last) time and fell in love. Such beautiful, lovely yarns---3 steps above the stuff you get at the mega-hobby/fabric stores, beautiful finished items and the owner was extremely friendly and helpful to this newbie knitter. She even furnished patterns to go with the yarn I bought. I love Newport and can't go often enough...and Knitting Needles in a NEW reason to visit more often. read more

So my girlfriend is insisting I write this review. We were down in Newport for the weekend and she had some trouble with her knitting. A friend recommended we head over to Kitting Needles for some advice. The woman behind the counter was extremely helpful to my girlfriend, she fixed her knitting problem even though she hadn't previously been a customer. I went to Knitting Needles with my sisters on a Saturday afternoon. We were greeted by a very nice lady (maybe the owner?). She was very helpful and sweet. She had a nice selection of yarns and patterns and most importantly, she had a sample of almost kind of yarn she sold made into something so you could feel the hand of the yarn when knitted into something. Also, she had fair prices and didn't try to sell us anything we didn't need! Lastly, as we were walking out of the shop, she ran after me to give me some round markers that she thought would be helpful to me!! read more
