The drive out from Columbus was pleasant, we took one of the state routes all the way and it was pretty direct. I'd recommend against using the "Second Entrance" when you get to the location. It was very hilly and the turn in to the festival route was a blind left turn at almost the top of a hill on another rural state route where you couldn't see the oncoming traffic. One of those "honk and pray" kind of turns. The festival is set up in a semi-permanent location (the location stays, different fairs come and go) where they have little wooden stalls for the vendors and a well maintained walking path. The overall theme is kind of country chic, but if that isn't your style, it's just a fun afternoon, and there are lots of bath and body products, fudge, and FOOD to keep you going. OMG, the food. It was very crowded when we visited, and by the time we were ready for lunch, the food area was packed, but organized. Each vendor had an IN and an OUT line, and there were lots of options (soup, pizza, hot and cold sandwiches, fries, desserts, etc.) On our way out, we got smoked turkey legs for dinner, and I'm still working on that sucker. I was pleasantly surprised to happen upon this little "Americana" music festival about an hour…read morenorth of Columbus, in Mount Vernon. Street parking was easy to find, so it was a quick two-block walk to the grassy, public sqaure where the main stage and most of the arts and crafts vendors were located. We found a handful of food stalls with all the usual fair foods, but most of the restaurants were open, so that provided a few more substantial dining options (and proper restrooms). Smaller stages, vendors and community organizations were positioned along the side streets. The Knox County Quilt Show was being held in the nearby YMCA. It was an exhibition of amazing, artistic textiles and worth the $2 admission fee. I can't say this was a most fabulous festival, but it has been going on for 21 years in commemoration of the 19th century, local musician, Daniel Emmett. What I found particularly interesting were the variety of competitions held in his honor for banjo, fiddling and flat picking. People brought chairs and blankets to watch the contestants pickin' and a grinnin' for the grand prize of $50. I wouldn't attend the Dan Emmett Music & Arts Festival with high expectations. I am a Californian who is spending time in Ohio this fall in order for my loving husband to live…read morehis dream of fully utilizing his Ohio State and Cleveland Browns season tickets now that our last of four children is stowed away in college. But what do I want to do? "Fall stuff" that Southern California, as much as I love it, just can't provide. That was our agreement - I will go to football games with him if he will go to pumpkin patches with me. So we found ourselves (now three times at Diamond Hill Farm) which put me in the mood I've always wanted to have in September / October but never have had until this year. It's a beautiful drive out to this working farm and the setting is beautiful once you arrive. There are pumpkins galore - all different shapes and sizes. There are also gourds, straw bales, corn stalks, decorative corn and mums for sale. If you want fall decor, this is your place to be. I'm not sure how their prices compare locally, but compared to California, it's a steal! There also seems to be plenty of fun to be had for the little ones. I didn't study it much because we had no little kids in tow, but it seems for a small fee or season pass, parents can take their babes into the fields for some swinging, slides, a hay ride, etc. Then there are the local goodies you can buy like fresh meats, jams, nuts and a few other things. I bought so many pumpkins and straw bales (remember I noted the reasonable prices?) that I needed a few wagons. Not sure if it was the owners or employees, but whoever came to help load everything into our truck was friendly. Go have a look and a buy if you want a lovely weekend drive and a good taste of fall. Besides, working at the university a few blocks from PF, I wanted to show my support for this thriving community. The premise: Local music acts literally play on the front porches of houses strategically place between S. Dawson and S. Cassady Ave. There's food trucks and beer tents dispersed - yes, you can walk around the street-confined area with your beer. Bonus? You couldn't ask for a more beautiful, warm but not too hot afternoon/evening to hold this first one POST-PANDEMIC!!
