Miso duck, sashimi and sushi platter
Kate J.

I'm so impressed. When you hear "Japanese fusion" unfortunately it often means a lot of California rolls. Not so here. We started by being regular pains in the bum moving to another table set from the heater. Then decided to test the a la carte menu izakaya style - because it just needs to be taken that way. Commencing with a Flaming Hot Number One which did indeed involve crab meat, but was a mouthful of balance served prettily on fire by the delightfully friendly and helpful Bryan. From the cocktail menu, a "Thai me up" was surprisingly complex, while a "Lost in translation" can only be described as pure - and I could easily detect the Disaronno. We were startled by the crunch and delicacy of the salmon skin chips accompanying the sashimi poke. But the undisputed standout was the miso duck. It didn't look like a large amount on the plate but was incredibly rich and fulfilling. The wine isn't thrilling for the prices. However, we were treated to a marvellous view and very pleasing yet unobtrusive service. Thoroughly recommend for a special night.

We bought the 13 course lobster tasting menu for $69, normal price being $155. The food came out pretty quickly which was good, however, it didn't taste very good. Waiters were cool.

I'm in the minority, all my experiences have been good to great! Latest time is with those discount vouchers and I thought it was great! I'm not entirely sure how much it cost or what I got but I enjoyed the experience. This latest deal had a flaming dessert which was a great end to the night,I'm really impressed!

Went for dinner and I was impressed! The location is incredible with tables offering views of the harbour. The food was spot on, delicious modern Japanese cuisine. We had a 15-course set menu. Stand-outs were the Number One Special crab salad, crab croquettes, volcano roll and the Wagyu hot rock. It was a great dining experience!

I went to Kobe Jones at King St Wharf with a group of friends for dinner, one in particular who didn't like seafood. So let me say straight off the bat, if you go with someone who doesn't eat seafood, then you might as well move on. There are other options besides seafood but for those who like seafood then this Japanese & sushi restaurant is a must. There's plenty of fresh sushi, sashimi and hot dishes to choose from or if it looks all too hard, let the thinking be done for you and go with a banquet option. It's not cheap and if you want accompanying wine then it's certainly not cheap but for me it was worth it. If you can jag a table over looking the water then all the better. If a budget is your priority then maybe go for one of the lunch specials or the early bird dinner specials. Wish someone had spotted that earlier!

Motto is the underdog of Japanese restaurants at Sussex Centre. Not only do they live in the shadow of highly rated Ramen Ikkyu, but Motto's location doesn't get the best foot traffic either. The escalators up from ground floor plop you out on the opposite side. This was my third time visiting Motto. Typically, there would be one or two very helpful and courteous girls who greet and coax you into checking out their menu. Thank goodness for picture menus! This time there was a dude by the of Chris working behind the counter. He first thanked me for stopping to look at the menu, then after suggesting that I should try one of the deep-fried options, he thanked me again for ordering. Genuinely courteous? Absolutely! CHICKEN KATSU PLATE ($9) OMG!!!! Best bang for your buck for suuuuure! The chicken is exactly how Chicken Katsu is supposed to be made. Crispy, flaky outside and juicy inside. If you've read my other reviews, you know I can consider myself a bit of a Chicken Katsu snob since that's my go-to-dish at Japanese restaurants. To top things off with this belly-loving dish, you get rice, a side salad w/dressing and miso soup... Oh and almost forgot THE BEST part - FREE ICE CREAM!!!!! Definitely coming back again to try another suggestion..

With relatively few staff that have to multitask between assembling, serving and taking orders, the queue rapidly lengthened behind us as dinner hours began. We ordered the karage bowl, plain wagyu bowl, the teriyaki chicken salad, assortment of side dishes and the matcha milk. The fried chicken is lightly battered and has a strong soy sauce flavor, topped with a layer of mayo. While the slightly undersized pieces have just came out from the fryer, the exterior barely have any crisp and is quite oily, while the interior is a little overcooked. The beef, different from its thick and succulent appearance on the menu, is overcooked and stringy. However, the flavoring on point and the topped spring onions are cut perfectly. Nothing special about the salad, and the same for the self-served takoyaki-on-a-skewer and cold tofu with sliced spring onions. The self-serve matcha milk was a pleasant surprise, with the right level of sugar and bitterness, only lacking some creaminess.
