Look, I know the voucher crowd is fickle - they pay half price for food, reluctantly purchase a drink to share between two, drink tap water, and only sometimes tip. They want all the benefits with as little expenditure as possible. But you know what? Embrace them! I'm so impressed. When you hear "Japanese fusion" unfortunately it often means a lot of California rolls. Not so here. We started by being regular pains in the bum moving to another table set from the heater. Then decided to test the a la carte menu izakaya style - because it just needs to be taken that way. Commencing with a Flaming Hot Number One which did indeed involve crab meat, but was a mouthful of balance served prettily on fire by the delightfully friendly and helpful Bryan. From the cocktail menu, a "Thai me up" was surprisingly complex, while a "Lost in translation" can only be described as pure - and I could easily detect the Disaronno. We were startled by the crunch and delicacy of the salmon skin chips accompanying the sashimi poke. But the undisputed standout was the miso duck. It didn't look like a large amount on the plate but was incredibly rich and fulfilling. The wine isn't thrilling for the prices. However, we were treated to a marvellous view and very pleasing yet unobtrusive service. Thoroughly recommend for a special night. read more

Went there last night 27 Sep12 for a treat & between 2 of us we spent just over $400 - but we had a huge meal (thinking now, could have done with a couple dishes less... but it was too good) with cocktails & sake. Mago oyster shots (very fresh), anago scallops, sashimi carpacio (tasty), mushroom salad (highly recommend - buttery & full of mushroom flavour), baked scallops, tempura lobster (YUM! with a butter garlic seaweed sauce on the side), Kobe beef & then sweets. I have read a few negative reviews but last night's food was delicious - light, fresh & tasty. Not too salty & they definitely do not use the same sauce for every dish (as per some reviewers' comments). It has not made my all time favourites list but I would go back there. read more

What an experience! We got a table right at the front overlooking King Street Wharf and we were looked after superbly by the wait staff from start to finish. You can tell the level of service matches the extraordinarily pricey meals. We were really lucky to be given a rather generous gift certificate so we indulged on a set menu for 2 with accompanying wines. Amazing food and wine! The only let down was the dessert, I think it was Green Tea Creme Brule (can't be sure, we drank a lot of wine!) Definitely the type of place for a superfancy meal with a special friend or lover. Delectable servings of seafood and wagyu beef are their specialty, the seafood platter we ordered was so fresh the food practically melts in your mouth. From first perusing the menu, you can immediately tell that much thought goes into every minute detail of each dish. The presentation is a feast for the eyes - though not so much for the stomach. As a high-end restaurant the prices are very steep for the tiny portions of food they serve. In saying that, I wouldn't plan on eating here if you aren't going to appreciate this kind of delicately prepared food. At Kobe Jones, they believe in 'graze dining', or the tradition of sharing plates between friends. So basically, this is the place for grazers, not gorgers. They also have a full bar which is perfect if you want drinks to complement your meal. The bar staff here were just as friendly as the staff on the floor. All in all, Kobe Jones is perfect for a relaxed dinner overlooking the water, where all you want is to share good food amongst close friends. read more

Lesson learnt - any restaurant offering year round Groupon discount vouchers is not worth going to. I had a 50% off voucher and if I had paid full price, I would be so incredibly ripped off! In fact, I felt ripped off even with the discount! Sure the restaurant looks trendy, but here, looks are deceiving. The food was very ordinary. I had the degustation, which was made to look like more than 10 courses on the menu, except that 5 "courses", each consisting of 1 piece of sushi, were served at the same time, on one plate! We arrived earlier than our reservation so I expected a little wait but we were seated straight away, facing towards King St Wharf and the harbour as the sun was setting. We ordered the Spring Sensation menu. My girlfriend loves seafood but can't eat shellfish, the waitress was amazing in pointing out which dishes she could and couldn't eat (which was great considering it was our fault for playing allergy roulette) but there was plenty of food for both of us. I really enjoyed all the dishes, but two of my favourites that were really on point were the Spider Roll, which is included on the tasting plate. The crunch from the soft shell crab was unexpected but delicious. The other I really enjoyed was the Volcano roll, which were scallop and crab rolls with a cream sauce. Luckily as it had scallops and crab in it, I didn't have to feel the least bit guilty for not sharing it! The Lobster Hot Rock seemed a bit gimmicky to me, but it's a nice idea in that it spreads out the dining experience. There's plenty of fresh sushi, sashimi and hot dishes to choose from or if it looks all too hard, let the thinking be done for you and go with a banquet option. It's not cheap and if you want accompanying wine then it's certainly not cheap but for me it was worth it. If you can jag a table over looking the water then all the better. I just spoke to the rudest, most flippant, unwilling to help or listen, man on the phone when I rang tonight. We have a very important function going on at work with a BIG client to whom we were catering Kobe Jones to. Little did we know the menu recently changed, and the menu we had supplied our clients with earlier are now quite different. With my intention to call, and see what we could do now the clients had specified what they wantred, started their function and could not be disturbed, the person I spoke to on the phone was COMPLETELY unwilling to listen, let alone offer any sort of help or suggestions. That alone is bad customer service, but on top of it, he spoke so rudely and was cutting me off. They say their style is Californian/ Japanese - which I guess is a unique fusion... but nothing on the menu stood out to me to be particularly "Californian" - but whatever... just making an observation. There food is good, quite pricey....but when you walk into the gorgeous designed building you know you're going to be paying top dollar. For example - how much for you expect to pay for a sushi roll? Try $32 for their "lollypop sushi" - tuna, kingfish, salmon, crab salad, asparagus and smelt roe, wrapped in thinly peeled cucumber with soy sauce vinaigrette..... sounds delicious (I had mine without the crab) and it is...but $32 in not going to leave you full....you definitely need more food....What about some Tuna Sashimii - 6 pieces - $29??? What???? As great as the food is, its super pricey! I can't justify 30 bucks on Tuna Sashimi.... it's just not reasonable.... That said, on Mondays to Wednesday during lunch for $29.95 you can have the "all you can eat sushi" which might be the only time you can ever afford to try their food.... read more

The sushi is always beautiful, the view of the harbour as the sun was setting was quite beautiful and service was satisfactory, but not all the food was great, and some dishes, such as the pork ribs (don't order this, it's a massive waste of money) left much to be desired. The quality of the food overall was only OK, by fine dining standards, and I wouldn't really recommend this place. Reasonably priced for fine dining I think. This was the second time we'd eaten here, and while the first occassion left me wanting more, this time left me not so keen. I blame it on us ordering the wrong menu set, I think. The manager apologised, but we certainly started the evening with a bad taste in our mouths. However, once the food came, all was forgiven. I had a Groupon, and I have to say, for the price, the food was fabulous!. There was so much food thrown at us that we couldn't even finish it. I'm all for great deals, but this meal could have fed 4 adults easily. First went to this place about 5+ years ago. Recently not sure what got over me but I bought 3 vouchers for them from Groupon. Honestly these vouchers are not really good value for money, at $70/head. Went there a few weeks ago on the first voucher and definitely didnt get a good experience. Service was bad. We got there early, about 5.15, got seated but no one looked at us for at least 20 mins. Drinks comes 20 mins later. I wanted some mineral water and we had 2 people, the girl just opened 2 bottles of mineral water. Who does that? Usually a bottle is more than enough for 2 people considering we also ordered cocktails. What a cheap way to get us pay for an extra $8. The food was just average. With $140 for 2 people I could easily have a better meal elsewhere, probably for cheaper too. No wonder they have to rely so much on selling vouchers! read more

The place is nice. The views grand. Seats comfy. The sushi was fine, as it always was. The volcano rolls, spider rolls, the number one special which costs $12 a piece! Then we got the fish and it was tough and tasteless. Didn't help there wasn't enough sauce (if it tasted nice we wouldn't need the sauce tho). The noodles were OK but not outstanding. The wagyu was also disappointing, being a 10+ marble score but it tasted just OK but not outstanding. It's really sad because what I remembered was a great fusion of real and modern Japanese food. Firstly the service was extremely slow. Had to flag waiter down 3 times to order drinks. Then waited for 15 min for them to bring out. Another 10 min went by before we could order mains. Ordered the hot seafood platter for 2 . Which took over 30 min to come out. I have been to Kobe Jones probably about 6 times in the last 3 years. Each time going more and more down hill. I'm really sad because the food used to be eye-poppingly good but the other day when I came, there were only a few yum dishes with their amazing signature sauce. When it came to the final dish (where the waitress comes out and melts the butter on the hot plate and cooks the prawn in front of you), the prawns were soggy! Omg I was so sad because it was hands down the most disgusting dish I have ever had in my life! I told the waitress that the prawns tasted like "soggy cotton balls" and she didn't really seem to give a sh!t. Just a shrug like oh well yeh, not my problem. Oh and I was a pretty surprised to be charged $17 for x2 bottles of still water. However we were delighted with not only the plentiful courses of food, but the lovely wait staff who explained each course and kept our water glasses filled. I ate at Kobe Jones last night with a group of business partners from interstate. From an entertaining non-Sydneysiders perspective it was great. Impressive interior, non-stop food delivery and nice-ish location and outlook. We went for the Sentou set menu, $145 per person with 11 dishes. Tragically there was a serious crab allergy on the table so some of the best dishes were swapped out. The chef was helpful and generous in his alternative suggestions. Standouts were the Wagyu tenderloin and the Wagyu hot rock, although the rock didn't keep the heat long enough to cook all the meat. The volcano roll was a great taste but a weird concept. The volume of food was substantial, but it should be for the price. Presentation was excellent and it was an enjoyable experience just seeing the dishes arrive and the building anticipation of getting to eat them. This restaurant worked well for entertaining non-Sydneysiders, but I can't imagine going back there with friends for a Japanese dinner. read more
